2 FISA 125th Anniversary This year marks the 125th anniversary of FISA, the World Rowing Federation. Originally known as Federation Internationale des Societies d Aviron, FISA was the first international sports federation. It was created in 1892, inspired by the growth of rowing that was occurring in the second half of the 19th century. Led by the Belgian rowing federation, there was the conviction that a uniform set of rules were needed for the sport. At that stage the rules of racing varied from club to club, race distances and the type of racing varied, rowers could use any type of boat and betting was rife. The first European Rowing Championships were staged in 1893 and rules regulating the sport of rowing began to be established. Now, 125 years later, rowing remains one of the most important Olympic sports with wide appeal. Rowing has transformed the lives of countless individuals from all five continents far transcending the sport itself. The words are true, Rowing is for life. Comite International Olympique (CIO) 1932 Olympic Games As a federation we lead the way in anti-doping, gender equality and take pride in the absolute transparency of our organisation Jean-Christophe Rolland, FISA President, Olympic Champion rower, avid indoor rower and one of the youngest sports federation presidents. What has FISA done? Worldwide growth of member nations from five to 151. Made 2000m the standard distance. A straight buoyed course is now the norm. Rowing equipment and boats follow a standard for all. International rowing events are held every year including the World Rowing Cup series and World Championships for seniors, under-23s and juniors. There is also the World Rowing Masters Regatta, World Rowing Coastal Championships and World Rowing Tour. Led the way in anti-doping measures with out-of-competition testing, no needles policy and Athlete commitment form. Put the athlete first and at the centre of every decision. This has included precompetition health screening. Established a powerful set of values in the world of sport teamwork, fairness, enduring, inclusive and natural. Integrated with para-rowing, masters, indoor, coastal and age-group rowing. Actively joined the movement for Clean Water and partnered with WWF.

4 FISA Igor Meijer WR clean water NEED CONTENT Our planet depends on clean water Table of contents TO DO ONCE PAGES CLOSER TO SIGN-OFF One of the greatest challenges of our time is to ensure there is enough clean water to support human life, nourish vital habitats and supply industry and agriculture. World Rowing believes that we all have a responsibility to apply environmentally-sustainable practices to our use and management of water. Rowing is a clean water sport and everyone involved in rowing has reason to protect this vital resource. World Rowing and the Worldwide Fund for Nature (WWF) work together in a global clean water partnership. This engages all rowers, national federations and all rowing clubs to work towards safeguarding their own freshwater environment. A joint action project, the Kafue River & Rowing Centre is a manifestation of this partnership. This project was inspired by the confluence of so many pressures and problems in the Kafue River in Zambia and the need to bring all stakeholders together to discuss and help find solutions. WORLD ROWING AND WWF PARTNERS FOR CLEAN WATER The development of a multi-purpose facility for water management education and research and the advancement of rowing in the region is underway. The global rowing community is at the forefront of a fundraising campaign for the Centre and a group of high-profile rowers are ambassadors for the cause. Because to help Kafue is to help the world. 5 1 General 1.1 Introduction Founded in 1892, this year marks the 125th anniversary of FISA, the World Rowing Federation. The European Rowing Championships was the first international regatta organised by FISA after its foundation and it is one of the oldest pan-continental sporting events. First staged in Orta, Italy in 1893, the continental championships were then organised almost annually until Then in 2007, the European regatta was reintroduced into the international rowing calendar. This year, the European Rowing Championships will be held in Racice, Czech Republic, located just 60km from Prague, the Czech capital city. The Racice venue, completed in 1986, has hosted a large number of international rowing and canoe events in recent years, including most recently the European Rowing Junior Championships in The European Rowing Championships are open to the 46 European national rowing federations, including Israel. The programme consists of the 14 Olympic boat classes plus four International boat classes (lightweight men s and women s single sculls, lightweight men s pair and women s four). In 2016, 34 nations took part with more than 500 athletes. Of those nations, 23 made it to the medals podium. Great Britain topped the rankings in terms of number of gold medals won (four of seven medals). Germany took ten medals, of which three were gold. Croatia came third with two gold medals. A number of crews have won a series of gold medals at the European level in recent years. These include France s lightweight men s double sculls of Jeremie Azou who claimed gold with Stany Delayre in 2013, 2014 and 2015 and in 2016 with new partner Pierre Houin. Germany s men s eight were crowned European Champions annually over the past four years while Great Britain s flagship men s four has systematically claimed European gold over the past three years. The European Rowing Championships are monitored and managed by the European Rowing Management Board (ERMB). Their responsibilities have grown to include the European Rowing Junior Championships (held May 2017 in Krefeld, Germany), the the European Rowing Indoor Championships (organised annually in January) and in 2017 the European Rowing Under 23 Championships will take place for the first time from 2-3 September 2017 in Kruszwica, Poland. In 2018 the European Rowing Championships will join six other sports at the inaugural multi-sport European Championships which will be held every four years. In 2018, the European Rowing Championships will be raced at Strathclyde Country Park near Glasgow, Scotland, from 2-5 August, To you, the media, we wish to extend a warm welcome to Racice. 8 1.4 Current season summary General The 2017 international season opened with the first stage of the World Rowing Cup in Belgrade, Serbia in early May. This marked the beginning of a new Olympiad leading to the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. Some athletes have retired and others are taking a year off, allowing new athletes and new combinations to make their appearance and show their potential on the world stage. In Belgrade, Great Britain topped the medals table with four gold medals, three silvers and two bronzes from the Olympic boat classes. The 60 points they assembled placed them ahead of 17 other nations that won World Cup points in the Serbian capital city. The British squad presented a number of new combinations following the Rio 2016 Olympic Rowing Regatta. The 2017 season is the first at senior level for both Jacob Dawson and Matthew Rossiter who took gold together in the men s pair. The British also won the women s pair with new-look crew of Karen Bennett and Holly Norton. Bennett was part of the British women s eight that won silver in Rio, while Norton won World Championship gold in the women s four in Rotterdam last year. The Netherlands ranked second on the points table with 47 points. They sent a club boat in the men s eight and won against the World and Olympic Champions, Great Britain. The Dutch also claimed gold in the women s double sculls with Sophie Souwer and Inge Janssen. Janssen was part of the Netherlands women s quadruple sculls that earned Olympic silver in Rio. In Belgrade, she and Souwer also doubled up and won silver in the women s quadruple sculls. Poland finished World Rowing Cup I with 36 points, placing third overall on the points table thanks in part to the gold medal they earned in the women s quadruple sculls. Two athletes (Agnieszka Kobus and Maria Springwald) medalled at the Rio Olympics. In Belgrade they were joined by 2016 world under-23 champions in the quad Marta Wieliczko and Katarzyna Zillmann. Switzerland had a very successful World Cup regatta thanks to two gold medals and one silver. Nico Stahlberg finished ahead of Olympic silver medallist Damir Martin of Croatia to win gold in the men s single sculls. In the women s single sculls, Olympian Jeannine Gmelin also won gold. Barnabe Delarze and Roman Roeoesli left the men s quadruple sculls to form a men s double this year and together they took silver at the World Cup. Lithuania proved its ongoing strength, earning two gold medals one in the men s double sculls and another in the men s quadruple sculls. Mindaugas Griskonis and Saulius Ritter continue together in the double after winning Olympic silver in Rio last year, while the quad is nearly identical to the line-up that finished ninth at the 2016 Olympics. The anticipated return to racing of the Irish brothers, Gary and Paul O Donovan in the lightweight men s double sculls saw them dip just out of the medals, finishing fourth. Instead it was Great Britain s Peter Chambers and Will Fletcher taking gold with the Czech Republic and Poland winning the lesser medals Media Guide, European Rowing Championships, Racice (CZE) 8

The duo did not disappoint and together they won gold. They will now be racing for the European title in Racice. Keep an eye out for Hedvig Rasmussen of Denmark, the 2016 Olympic bronze medallist in the women s pair. She will be racing at the Europeans with a new teammate, Christina Johansen who has returned to international rowing after a break. And do not discount the Romanians. Laura Oprea won Olympic bronze last year in the women s eight and will be teaming up in Racice with Beatrice-Madalina Parfenie, a Junior World Champion in the women s pair from W2-: Major results since 2012 Place ERCH12 ERCH13 ERCH14 ERCH15 ERCH16 1 ROU ROU GBR GBR GBR 2 GBR GER ROU NED GER 3 CRO UKR NED ROU ROU 4 ITA RUS IRL FRA RUS 5 UKR ITA CRO DEN DEN 6 TUR CZE GER POL FRA 7 CZE BLR SRB CZE POL 8 BLR NOR CZE ESP BLR 9 ITA IRL CZE 10 FRA UKR NED 11 RUS CRO CRO 12 GER UKR Men s pair (M2-) Great Britain boated a new combination of Jacob Dawson and Matthew Rossiter earlier this month at World Rowing Cup I. The World Cup final saw the top four boats finish within one and a half seconds of each other with the 2016 Olympic silver medallists, Gary and Paul O Donovan of Ireland in fourth. They will also be racing in Racice and as the reigning European Champions, expect them to be gunning for a medal. But watch out for the return of the Olympic Champions. Jeremie Azou and Pierre Houin from France are racing. All eyes will be on them to assess their fitness level in this new Olympiad. Lightweight women s double sculls (LW2x) The gold and silver medallists from 2017 World Rowing Cup I were Poland and Great Britain respectively and they will be racing again in Racice. Poland s Weronika Deresz and Martyna Mikoajczak finished seventh overall at last year s Olympic Games, while Great Britain s Katherine Copeland is the 2012 Olympic Champion in this boat class and she continues the partnership she began in 2015 with Charlotte Booth (nee Taylor). 17 Men s double sculls (M2x) The Lithuanians are the 2016 Olympic silver medallists in this event and at World Rowing Cup I they won gold. In Racice, Mindaugas Griskonis will be replaced by Martynas Dziaugys who won gold in Belgrade in the men s quadruple sculls. The Swiss crew of Barnabe Delarze and Roman Roeoesli who won silver in Belgrade will race again and look to do just as well or better at the European level. Poland will send a different combination from the one that won bronze at World Rowing Cup I. The fifth and sixth placed crews from World Rowing Cup I, Belarus and Bulgaria respectively, will line up again with the same athletes, while Great Britain will race for the first time in the double this season with a new-look crew consisting of Thomas Barras, who won bronze in the quad in Belgrade, and Frazier Christie. 19 Men s eight (M8+) Earlier this month The Netherlands caused quite a stir when they sent a club boat to World Rowing Cup I in Belgrade and beat the Olympic Champions, Great Britain to take gold. This result must have given the Dutch a huge confidence boost and sent the British back to the drawing board. For Racice the Netherlands are sending their national team eight which includes just one athlete from World Cup I, Ruben Knab, and then five of the athletes that were part of the Rio Olympic bronze medal crew. The British are almost completely holding on to their Belgrade boat. Coach Juergen Grobler has made just one change to the line up Tom Jeffery replaces Timothy Clarke.
