Sports: A Career option Sports is no longer a pastime or a matter of hobby alone. It has attained a prestigious status all over the world. In the US, it is the 5 th largest Industry. In India, like politics, it is a major obsession. From a recreational activity to a full-fledged career option, it has today evolved into a viable alternative. People have fewer qualms about pursuing a career in sports today. The corporate world is spending astronomically high amounts of money by way of sponsorships, advertisements during sports telecasts, etc. Some of the prominent Indian companies which are putting their money into sports are Reliance, Wills, Titan, MRF, JCT, Phillips, Coca Cola, Pepsi, Tata, SAIL (Steel Authority of India), Britannia, Tata, MRF and the list keeps on growing day by day. National Games 2011 and Investment into Sports We are all aware that Goa will play the hosts to the National Games that will be held in the year Through newspaper reports, we are aware that astronomical sums will be pumped into creating the necessary infrastructure for the games. The central government has allocated Rs 1,220 crore, and as per the break-up given by the Finance Minister an amount of Rs 570 crore will be earmarked for building infrastructure and the balance Rs 650 crore will go for construction and improvement of internal roads in the state. Sports as a full fledged Industry and The Right Move When the Government is pumping in so much money, will the benefits of the investment percolate down to the masses or are we seeing the creation of a few more white Elephants? In lieu of the fact that Goa will be hosting these National Games, what are the measures that need to be taken to promote Sports in Goa as a full-fledged Industry? What incentives need to be given to sportsmen, and students, who excel in sports? Should every child be encouraged to take up one sport in school? What kinds of career options will be available to those who wish to pursue sports as a Career? These are possibly different issues that could feature in The Right Move, a book that can be like a hand-book of Sports in Goa. Prominent writers/ Journalists could contribute articles or features for this book. Each writer can focus on one particular aspect in order to avoid duplication of facts and ideas. The scope of this book could perhaps even be enlarged, so that it serves as some kind of guidance for policy formulation for the Government. Various Career opportunities With the corporate world making its contribution, career opportunities in sports are increasing. While there are a host of jobs provided by the government organizations like Sports Authority of India, National Institute of Sports, Universities, Colleges, Schools, Public and Private Sector Companies, job opportunities are also provided by Indian Railways, Indian Airlines, Panjab & Sind Bank, State Bank of India etc. A serious sportsman can choose to begin as an amateur player and go on to become a professional. They can also train to become umpires and referees or take up the posts of coach or a physical instructor in educational institutions. Higher on, they can work as administrators or officials in the local sports organisations, either government or private. Those with an enduring liking for sports can also juggle their primetime careers with sports. These options include becoming sports journalists, physiotherapists and sports physicians,

and fitness coaches. Other areas they can branch into are adventure sports and setting-up training centres and health clubs. Employment is also possible in the public and private sector under the sports quota. Sports Careers in Retail Sporting Goods Sporting goods offer sports related employment opportunities including the design, production and sale of apparel and equipment. Jobs at Sporting Events Sporting events are one of the nation s favorite pastimes and forms of entertainment. Event management companies normally maintain an entire army of staff to insure these events run smoothly. Everything about the event must be coordinated perfectly; marketing and public relations, ticket and concession sales, facilities maintenance and audio and video production. Careers as Sports Officials Sports officials such as umpires and referees are required at all levels of sporting events from amateur athletics to school organized events in youth leagues, high school and collegiate circles as well as professional sports. Sports journalism The spinoff of the IPL and the sports craze in the country has seen the launch of new sports channels, magazines, newspapers and web portals. So if you have a flair for writing or talking about sports, or producing sports-related news, sports journalism is the career choice for you. Besides opportunities for one-on-one equation with your favourite sports icon, you d also get to travel around the globe, filing reports about matches. Of course, this takes writing skills and an in-depth knowledge of the sports that you intend to cover. Sports Jockey/ Commentry Commentator: As the T.V. is getting more and more popular a good portion of its time is allotted to sports activities. With the growing number of private cable TV networks the scope for opportunities as commentator on television and even radio are growing. If you have a flair for the language and good communication skills, you could also pursue the career of a Sports Jockey. Sports administration

The need to manage a team, events, or a sports organization and its finances has given rise to the career of sports administration. This could have you either working for a government body or a private team. You d need to be a good manger of personnel as well as business affairs, to succeed in this field. With big money in sports like cricket, tennis and hockey in India, sports administration has a bright future. Coaching The passion that many fitness enthusiasts have for their specialised field can position them as coaches. Coaching opportunities range from the high school level through professional sports. If you aspire to a career as an athletic coach, a degree in teaching or athletic management is a prerequisite, but the effort is worth it. Coaching would, of course, require new innovations of techniques in the sports field which would make you stand apart from the run-of-the-mill galli coaches. Related sports careers If you have a medical background, sports is an arena where you can perform miracles. This could make you a much sought-after doctor. These careers bring in not just good money, but also bragging rights, as many of your patients are bound to be superstars. For a long time, despite their crucial presence in every important sports team, these specialists were relegated to the sidelines. Thanks to the media focus on sports, people in line of work have had to field questions regarding the team s fitness. Thus glamour, too, is a feature of the profession. Sports medicine This field opens doors for doctors to specialise in working with athletes. This may seem glamourous, but you need to have a true passion for the field to enjoy such work. A sports medicine practioner would have to be continuously watching or tending to the team s health. One could even consider him or her to be a part of the team. Sports medicine today is a super- specialisation, with courses available in foreign universities that enable you to study medicine along with the management skills required in dealing with sports personalities.

Physical therapist A physiotherapist may not have an MBBS degree, but is nevertheless a doctor. A sportsperson who is constantly engaged in extreme physical activity needs a well-toned and strong body. A physical therapist, or physiotherapist, needs to work hands-on, ensuring that players are fighting fit and can withstand sore tendons and tennis elbows. A course in physiotherapy is a requirement, if you are considering entering this professional field. Personal expertise can do wonders in this career, as sports injuries need to be healed as fast as possible. Nutritionist Food can make or break a fit body. As more and people realise this, the demand for nutritionists is growing. Jobs are available at gyms to health centres that promise to change the way you look and feel. This, again, requires a degree. Having the right set of clients can make you as famous as the sports stars themselves. With the heavy investments now made in leading sports, professional players are paying more heed than ever before to those who advise them on what, when, and how much to eat, so that they can perform to the best of their ability. The team nutritionist has thus become a fixture, advising players on the pros and cons of various diets. Dietician The role of dietitian is very important for physical health of person as well as in the treatment of the patient. Today people are more conscious and seek advice of professional to keep fit and fine. Previously, several dietitians took job just to nurture their family. This job was not considered professional job. But today, there is huge demand of dietitians as health problems are increasing speedily. To opt as a career of dietitian, student is required to complete at least a bachelor's degree in dietetics, foods and nutrition, food service systems management, or a related area. Fitness training and opportunities Being fit has never been so popular, or as necessary as it is today. With millions of people eager to lose weight and get in shape, fitness training is one of the fastest growing careers in the health and fitness industry today. The demand for professionals like aerobics instructors, yoga instructors and personal and corporate trainers is catapulting upwards. There was a time when the only people using personal trainers were professional athletes who needed help for injury management or excelling at their sport. Today people from all walks of life from celebrities to senior citizens are using personal trainers to help them learn how to exercise, lose weight, maintain all round fitness and adopt a healthier lifestyle.

Today, fitness in India is a whopping Rs.2,000 crore industry and most fitness centres are swanky studios offering an array of fitness regimes such as aerobics, kickboxing, yoga, dancercise and other workouts with sophisticated machines. Moreover, be it at home or at the fitness centre having a qualified trainer has become the in-thing. With gyms and health clubs mushrooming all over the country, the demand for qualified instructors is going up sharply. And this spells good prospects for those aiming to pursue fitness as their career. Trainers with the right qualification can teach just about anybody who can pay to be healthy and fit from hardworking executives to the stressed-out CEOs, the politicians, the self-conscious student, the middle-aged housewife. There are many factors driving the emergence of financial planners. For one, money decisions have become more Umpire / Referee: This is a tough job as it requires thorough knowledge of the rules of the game one is refereeing. Their job is to carry out the games and sports in accordance with rules and regulations as set by the concerned governing body various recognized State and national sports organizations employ umpires and referees. They also reward certification of expertise for the game to qualified umpires and referees. The other tasks which an umpire/referee performs include scrutinizing sports equipment, the ground and enforcing fulfillment of schedules and rules. Opportunities with Private Sector: The increasing awareness about physical fitness and the popularity enjoyed by many games has led to the mushrooming of sports clubs all over the country. From simple ones that offer coaching to ones that are fully equipped to cater to the elites and upper classes. Such clubs are privately owned and the owners prefer persons with exposure in relevant sporting fields to operate sports and leisure clubs. Such jobs carry many administrative responsibilities alongside.. Persons working in such places need to have excellent interpersonal skills, as they will need to interact with many people who come to use the facilities offered by the club, with various sportspersons to be appointed as instructors, equipment suppliers and so on. Several Sports Pubs are also coming up in different parts of Goa. Adventure Sports ventures Rock Climbing Water Sports Parasailing Ballooning Boating Flying / Gliding Trekking/ Mountaineering Motor Sport Polo Riding Sailing Shooting

Olympic sports (Source: Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia ) The Olympic sports comprise all the sports contested in the Summer and Winter Olympic Games. The current Olympic program consists of 35 sports with 53 disciplines and more than 400 events. The Summer Olympics include 28 sports with 38 disciplines, and the Winter Olympics include 7 sports with 15 disciplines. Each Olympic sport is represented by a single international governing body, namely an International Federation (IF). The International Olympic Committee (IOC) establishes a hierarchy of sports, disciplines, and events. According to this hierarchy, the Olympic sports can be subdivided into multiple disciplines, which are often assumed to be distinct sports. Examples include swimming and water polo (disciplines of Aquatics, represented by the International Swimming Federation), or figure skating and speed skating (disciplines of Skating, represented by the International Skating Union). In their turn, disciplines can be subdivided into events, for which medals are actually awarded. A sport or discipline is included in the Olympic program if the IOC determines that it is widely practiced around the world, that is, the number of countries that compete in a given sport is the indicator of the sport's prevalence. The IOC's requirements reflect participation in the Olympic Games as well more stringent toward men (as they are represented in higher numbers) and Summer sports (as more nations compete in the Summer Olympics). To be able to be competed at the Olympics, for instance, an event must be practiced in at least 50 and 35 countries, on three continents, by men and women, respectively. Previous Olympic Games included sports which are no longer present on the current program, like polo and tug of war. These sports, known as "discontinued sports", were later removed either because of lack of interest or absence of an appropriate governing body. Archery and tennis are examples of sports that were competed at the early Games, were eventually dropped by the IOC, but managed to return to the Olympic program (in 1972 and 1988, respectively). Demonstration sports have often been included in the Olympic Games, usually to promote a local sport from the host country or to gauge interest and support for the sport.such sports, like baseball and curling, were successfully included in the official Olympic program (in 1992 and 1998, respectively). Summer Olympic Games At the first Olympic Games, nine sports were contested.since then, the number of sports contested at the Summer Olympic Games has gradually risen to the current number of twenty-eight. At the 2012 Summer Olympics, however, the number of sports will fall back to twenty-six, following an IOC vote, in early 2006, deciding the removal of baseball and softball from the Olympic program. These remain, nonetheless, as Olympic sports and have the possibility to return to the Olympic program, as of In order for a sport or discipline to be in included on the Summer Olympics program (but not necessarily be contested at the Olympics), it must be widely practiced in at least 75 and 50 countries, on four continents, by men and women, respectively. Current program of IOC

The following sports (or disciplines of a sport) make up the current Summer Olympic Games official program and are listed alphabetically according to the name used by the IOC. Five of the 28 sports consist of multiple disciplines. Aquatics, Canoeing/Kayak, Cycling, Gymnastics, Volleyball, Diving, Swimming Synchronized swimming, Water polo, Archery, Athletics (track and field), Badminton, Baseball, Basketball, Boxing, Flatwater canoe/kayak, Slalom canoe/kayak, Mountain biking, Road cycling Track cycling, Equestrian Fencing Field hockey Football (soccer) Artistic Rhythmic Trampoline Handball Judo Modern pentathlon Rowing Sailing Shooting Softball Table tennis Taekwondo Tennis Triathlon Beach volleyball Indoor volleyball Weightlifting Wrestling Discontinued sports The following sports were previously part of the Summer Olympic Games program as official sports, but are no longer on the current program. These two sports made their debuts at the 1908 and the 1920 Summer Olympics, respectively, but were permanently integrated in the Winter Olympics program as of the first edition. The International Winter Sports Week, later dubbed the I Olympic Winter Games and retroactively recognized as such by the IOC, consisted of nine sports. The number of sports contested at the Winter Olympics has since been decreased to seven, comprising a total of fifteen disciplines. A sport or discipline must be widely practiced in at least 25 countries on three continents, in order to be included on the Winter Olympics program.

Current program The following sports (or disciplines of a sport) make up the current Winter Olympic Games official program and are listed alphabetically, according to the name used by the IOC. Three out of the seven sports consist of multiple disciplines. Bobsleigh ΓÇö Skating ΓÇö Skiing Biathlon Bobsleigh Skeleton Curling Ice hockey Luge Figure skating Short track speed skating Speed skating Alpine skiing Cross country skiing Freestyle skiing Nordic combined Ski jumping Snowboarding Demonstration sports The following sports have been demonstrated at the Winter Olympic Games for the years shown, but have never been included on the official Olympic program: Bandy (1952) Disabled alpine skiing (1984 and 1988) Disabled cross-country skiing (1988) Ice stock sport (1936, 1964) Military patrol (1928, 1936 and 1948) Ski ballet (acroski) (1988 and 1992) Skijoring (1928) Sled-dog racing (1932) Speed skiing (1992) Winter pentathlon (1948) Military patrol was an official skiing event in 1924 but the IOC currently considers it an event of biathlon in those games, and not as a separate sport. Ski ballet, similarly, was simply a demonstration event falling under the scope of freestyle skiing. Recognized sports Many sports are not included in the Olympic program but are "recognized" by the IOC. At any time, a recognized sport may be added to the Olympic program in future Games, as result of a recommendation of the IOC Olympic Programme Commission, followed by a voting of the IOC membership. Usually, the sport appeared as a demonstration sport or event of similar status before being officially promoted.[6] The respective International Federations (IFs) are responsible for ensuring that the sport's activities follow the Olympic Charter; from the moment their sport is recognized they become official Olympic federations and can assemble with the IOC and remaining Olympic IFs.[16] Recognized sports that are not part of the competition schedule for an Olympic Games usually become part of the schedule of the World Games. On July 11, 2005, the IOC voted to drop baseball and softball from the Olympic program for 2012, [17] a decision that was reaffirmed on February 9, 2006.[8] Nevertheless, the IOC members rejected their replacement with karate and squash, which were selected from a list that included golf, roller sports and rugby sevens. During its last meeting of 2007, on December 12, the IOC Executive Board approved the provisional recognition of both cricket and climbing for a two-year period. The following sports are currently recognized by the IOC: Air sports, Bandy, Billiard sports, Boules, Bowling, Bridge, Chess, Climbing, Cricket, Dance Sport, Golf, Karate Korfball Lifesaving Motorcycle sport Netball Orienteering Pelote Basque Polo Power boating Racquetball Roller sports Rugby Squash Sumo Surfing Tug of war Underwater sports Water skiing Wushu.
