2 "Let The Games Begin" Armadillo Camporee Leaders Guide for 2015 Page 2 The Olympic Spirit was first described as "The important thing is not to win, but to take part". This year, we celebrate the spirit of world games by competing in the Games of the Armadillo Olympiad. The spirit of scout competition will be both physically and mentally challenging. Units will be competing for Bronze, Silver and Gold as individuals, teams and troops. The troop with the most OVERALL medals will be the weekend s overall Olympic Champions. There will be an Olympic Opening Ceremony first this Saturday morning. Patrol competitions will begin afterwards with Olympic/Scout type team and individual event activities after lunch. Free time is scheduled for late Saturday afternoon. The Olympic award ceremony will be Sunday morning. Each Troop will pick a Country to represent throughout the weekend. In Olympic tradition, the first Troop (Troop 1) should represent the first country (Greece). Troops do not represent more than one country. Larger troops may have multiple patrols/teams but you will be listed as Country A then patrol/team a and b. Each troop may have up to two competing Patrols per event. Let the Camporee Chair know which country your Troop is choosing to represent. Saturday Morning Patrol Competition Each troop will participate as in the past. Troops will also host either a scout skills or Olympic game themed event (see Event List). Let the Camporee Chair know which event your Unit is choosing to host. Troops will need the following items to compete for Best Overall Troop: 1. The Country's flag. The flag should look like your Country s Scouting Fleur de lis (and you can incorporate your Troop number into the flag); 2. Brief history of the Country s Scouting program. 3. An Olympic uniform would be a bonus but not required. Some of the International Scout emblems you can use for the Flag are included at the end of this document. Please notify the Camporee Chair ASAP of your Country selection. An electronic file containing these symbols is available on request from the Camporee Chair. Afternoon Troop/Individual Olympic Competition Olympic/Scout type team and individual event activities will be offered in the afternoon. The best scores for the Afternoon Olympic events will be awarded Bronze, Silver and Gold.
3 Armadillo Camporee Leaders Guide for 2015 Page 3 Evening Events Each Troop will present a brief history of scouting and Olympic athletes from your country. Higher scores will be awarded for SKITS AS PART OF YOUR PRESENTATION and ARE GREATLY WELCOMED. ALL troop presentations will be scored by your peers (all SPL's) and a panel of scouters. Scores will be added up. Highest scores will win the Bronze, Silver and Gold Medal. Order of the Arrow Call Out at the Evening Campfire If you wish to have your troop members announced at Camporee please make sure you have your list of candidates for the call out to the District Order of the Arrow Chairperson, Mr. David Stroud@dstroud@prismnet.com ASAP. A Brotherhood ceremony will be held afterwards. SO PLEASE GET YOUR ORDEAL MEMBERS who are eligible TO ATTEND THIS YEARS CAMPOREE. REGISTRATION INFORMATION: Fee is $15 per individual (Scouts and Scouters). The fee for Camporee Committee/Staff members is $25. All registrants will receive a Camporee Patch. ALL UNITS SHOULD BE REGISTERED ON LINE BEFORE FEBRUARY 23 (MONDAY), to allow us to identify camp sites, have sufficient staffing, etc. Additional scouts and leaders can be added after that date, up to and including registration at the camp. Please register your Troop online by going to thegames begin armadillo 2016 camporee/ It is best that you register as a Unit. Payment may be made online or by check to the scout office. If you are an individual not with a Unit (such as a staff member), you will select the link to register as an individual, and pay the $15 online. If your Troop registers you, do NOT need to register as an individual. If you have trouble paying online, contact the Camporee Chair If you are a late registrant, you may pay at check in. These words mean Faster Higher Stronger. PATROL COMPETITIONS Patrol competitions will be centered around Scout and athletic skills. Event coordinators (Troops) will have the basic materials needed at each event. However, each patrol should at least have the following basic gear: Patrol Flag/Totem Compass Scout Handbook (for reference, if needed) Weather appropriate clothing Sturdy walking/hiking shoes Snacks/drinking water Sun protection, if needed Pocket knife/tool Totin chip Paper/pen/pencil SCORING Each event will be scored for (a) Skill, and (b) Scout Spirit. To qualify for consideration for the Top Patrol award in Skills or the Top Patrol award in Spirit, the Patrol must complete at least 8 events. If a Patrol completes more than 8, the best 8 scores will be used. Patrols may only enter an event one time. GATEWAY COMPETITION There will be a Troop award for Olympic Spirit Gateways. Additional awards will also be presented for the best theme participation during scout competitions on Saturday. Traditional Camporee Awards will also be provided for best Gateway and best Troop campsite. WEBELOS PROGRAM Webelos attending the Camporee will be able to attend their own program area. The Camporee Staff has designed a program specifically for Webelos which will include Boy Scout Skills. We will cover most of the items of the Webelos. Crossing from Webelos to Boy Scouts can sometimes seem like crossing a raging river to get to the other side when, in fact, with knowledge comes confidence, with confidence comes success and with success comes enjoyment! The Camporee 2016 Webelos Program will share the knowledge to make the process less turbulent more fun and a success.

19 ARMADILLO DISTRICT 2016 OLYMPICS CAMPOREE OLYMPIC THEMED EVENT LIST # Event Event Owner's Description Event Owner 1 Athens 2 Los Angeles 3 Rio 4 Beijing 5 Montreal 6 Tokyo A wilderness first aid type scenario or two using mulage to make it realistic. The Patrol must make sure the area is safe, identify the injuries, and treat them. Need to include something bloody and something not bloody like heat stroke or hypothermia. The Patrol is asked to provide the bearing to several visible landmarks, without the aid of a compass. The Patrol will need to determine north using the methods in the Scout Handbook. If cloudy, they must describe the methods in order to use a compass to complete the exercise. Divide the patrol into groups of two or three and provide a map of the area with contour lines. Ask them to orient the map without a compass. This can be expanded to a map reading exercise for roads, trails, structures, bodies of water, reading lat/long, declination, etc. Shelter is a Basic Survival Skill. It is cold and about to rain. Using their materials and event provided materials, scouts build a shelter that the entire patrol can get under. Each scout uses what they brought and/or materials at hand to stay warm. This event probably needs some trees. Event owner will provide a few spars, rope, tarp. Extra points if the patrol uses materials they brought (space blanket, rope, duck tape, etc). The Patrol is given a medical emergency scenario. The task is to describe the signs and symptoms of the different hurry up cases and heart attacks. Explain how it would be managed. Probably need two or three scenarios to reduce assistance between patrols of the same troop. This event would cover signaling. Mirrors, bright colors, make H E L P out of rocks in a clearing, etc. Patrol should explain how to attract attention during the day or during the night.
20 # Event Event Owner's Description Event Owner 7 Berlin 8 Paris 9 Atlanta Fire is a Basic Survival Skill. A successful fire will burn through the twine set X inches above the ground. Recommend that the event owner brings plenty of natural materials for tinder, kindling, and fuel wood. Ideally, the scouts wouldn t need a hatchet, but could use pocket knives. Extra points for using the matches/firestarter/flint/etc. that they brought. But the owner should have backup matches/firestarter. Propane based lighters are not allowed. Traditional orienteering course using compass. Patrol gets a sheet with directions. Each way point has a question that if answered, shows the patrol reached the correct point. The patrol must tie all of the following knots: taut line, two half hitches, bowline, square, sheet bend, clove hitch, timber hitch. Each scout has to tie at least one. The scout tying the knot has to tell what it is for. Extra point if the patrol can tie a neck tie (it s in the book). T5 10 Mexico City Special team building event designed by and staffed by OA. Armadillo OA 11 Sydney This is test lashing skills, how about an event where the patrol builds a free standing structure of their own design so that every patrol member can get completely off the ground for 60 seconds. 12 Helsinki Team of scouts put up a tent with a blindfold and team directions. 13 Melbourne 14 Seoul 15 Rome Throwing a line and buoy to a specific target about 2' apart 16' away. Timed event. List requirements for safe swim. One minute to look at items in the box. Then list as many objects as possible. Race to fill the glass jar up with water from a leaky can 10 yards away. Timed event.
