The Decorah High School Band Deartment has a long and roud tradition o excellence This iece as commissioned to honor all o the great student musicians, oth current and ormer, ho have contriuted to this success The iece received its Decorah remiere ith the Decorah High School Wind Ensemle, under its conductor ames L ritz, on eruary, 01 ABUT THE CMSER ( 19) Samuel R Hazo resides in ittsurgh, ennsylvania ith his ie and three children In 00, Mr Hazo ecame the irst comoser in history to e aarded the inner o oth comosition contests sonsored y the National Band Association (William D Revelli in 00 and Merrill ones in 001) He is a ull memer o ASCA and has een honored ith multile ASCA-lus Aards Mr Hazo has comosed or the roessional, university and ulic school levels in addition to riting original scores or television, radio and the stage His original symhonic comositions include erormances ith actors Brooke Shields, ames Earl ones, David Conrad and Richard Kiley He has also ritten symhonic arrangements or three-time Grammy Aard inning singersongriter Lucinda Williams Mr Hazo s comositions have een erormed and recorded orld-ide, including erormances y the United States Military Bands, the Tokyo Kosei Wind rchestra, the Birmingham Symhonic Winds (UK) and the Klavier Wind roect s recordings ith Eugene Migliaro Cororon His orks have een layed at every maor music convention in the orld and also aired in ull-length rograms on National ulic Radio remiering erormance ensemles include a variety o roessional, university, all-state and honors ensemles His commissions include ieces ordered y the Wenger Cororation, National Honor Band o America, the Midest Clinic Board o Directors and The University o Notre Dame or a 010 World remiere in Carnegie Hall Mr Hazo s titles have consistently aeared in the GIA series Teaching Music Through erormance in Band He is also a contriuting author to the rd volume o Mark Camhouse s and GIA s Comosers on Comosing or Band and Meredith ulications The Music Director s Cookook Mr Hazo served as comoserin-residence at Craig Kirchho s University o Minnesota s 00 conducting symosium, and in March o 005, his icture aeared in the cover o The Instrumentalist magazine in conunction ith that issue s eature story on Mr Hazo s career Samuel R Hazo has een a music teacher at every educational grade level rom kindergarten through college, including tenure as a high school and university director Mr Hazo as tice named Teacher o Distinction y the Teachers Excellence oundation He received his achelor s and master s degrees rom Duquesne University here he served on the Board o Governors and as aarded as Duquesne s utstanding Graduate in Music Education Mr Hazo serves as a guest conductor and is a clinician or Hal Leonard Cororation He is also sonsored y Sielius Music Sotare His original comositions and arrangements are ulished y Hal Leonard, Boosey Hakes, H Music and Wingert-ones ulications Recordings o Mr Hazo s comositions aear on Klavier Records and Mark Records
