Rome, Mai 1982 Rome, May e SESSION DU COMlTÉ INTERNATIONAL OLYMPIQUE 85 th SESSION OF THE INTERNATIONAL OLYMPIC COMMITTEE Mr. Juan Antonio Samaranch, President of the IOC. MR. Sandro Pertini President of the Italian Republic. 230

COMITÉ INTERNATIONAL OLYMPIQUE CHÅTEAU DE VIDY, 1007 LAUSANNE, SUISSE PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE FOR THE 85TH IOC SESSION CONTINUING FROM THE XITH OLYMPIC CONGRESS AND THE 84TH SESSION, WE SHALL AGAIN MEET TO WORK AT REINFORCING AND EXPANDING THE OLYMPIC MOVEMENT, OUR TASK CAN NEVER BE COMPLETED. THIS PROOF OF VITALITY WHLCH WE ALL ENJOY DEMANDS FROM US OUR GREAT AND UNDIVIDED ATTENTION AT ALL TIMES, WE KNOW HOW DIFFICULT IT IS TO PERFECTLY ACCOMPLISH ALL THAT WE TOLD DEAR, THE AGENDA FOR THIS 85TH SESSION IS VERY COMPREHENSIVE, HOWEVER. I HAVE NO DOUBT THAT ONCE AGAIN WE WILL TOGETHER SUCCEED IN FIND- ING ME BEST ADAPTABLE SOLUTIONS, GIULIO ONSESTI'S ABSENCE PROFOUNDLY AFFECTS US, BUT HIS PERSIST- ENCE IN HIS WORK REMAINS WITH US. I WOULD LIKE TO THANK THE ITALIAN NATIONAL OLYMPIC COMMITTEE AND ALL THOSE WHO HAVE CONTRIBUTED TO THE PREPARATIONS OF THIS SESSION, DURING THIS TIME BEFORE WE SHALL ALL GATHER IN ROME, MAY I ADD A SPECIAL MESSAGE OF WELCOME TO OUR FEMALE COLLEAGUES WHO, FOR THE FIRST TIME, WILL PARTICIPATE IN OUR WORK, 231

Welcome It is a great honour for the Italian National Olympic Committee and all sports personalities to have Rome chosen, after sixteen years, as the location of the 85th Session of the International Olympic Committee this coming May. Since the 64th Session in 1966, our country has not had the occasion to be host to this most important Olympic meeting. During this time, world sports and Italian sports have experienced all the changes that have occured in the history of Olympism. Through the penetrating and passionate work of its IOC members Messrs. Giorgio de Stefani and Giulio Onesti, Italy has equally offered true contributions to the cause of the Olympic Movement. 232

At the same time, the commitment and generosity of our athletes reveal that the tradition of italian technical schooling follows very closely the constant development of sport. The privilege that has now been accorded Rome to receive the Session is incentive for the future of the Country s sports organisation, towards the defense and support of the ideals of liberty and brotherhood of the Olympic Movement. The 85th Session, which follows that of Baden-Baden, will tackle some important subjects. In effect, in confronting the current problems in the world of sport, it will vastly reflect the results of the Xlth Olympic Congress with greater prudence - the Congress being the veritable example of the solid unity of all that comprises the sports world. In the hope that this Session in Rome will revive the interest of all Italian sports figures on Olympic issues, it is a pleasure to wish, in the name of the CONI and on my part too, a cordial welcome to the members of the IOC and the IOC Commissions, to the delegations of the cities of Los Angeles and of Sarajevo, as well as to the representatives of the press. May I express my best hopes for constructive and serene work. Franco Carraro President of the CONI 233

Having learned that the Executive Board has accepted the CONI s invitation to organise the 85th Session in Rome, I am particularly happy to once again have the pleasure of receiving my colleagues of the IOC in my country and in my city, evidence of their consideration and confidence regarding our sports organisation. In effect, in the last sixty years, Italy has had the honour of hosting six Sessions as well as other important meetings between the Executive Board and representatives of the IFS or the NOCs. As far as I am concerned, this is the fourth time that I have had this pleasure, and I consider it 234

an exceptional privilege and am very proud. Therefore, I welcome you dear friends and colleagues, old and new. The work of this Session, the first since the outstanding Congress at Baden-Baden, as well as the work of the very important IOC Commissions, seem among the most significant for the future of the Olympic Movement. I would also like to express my best wishes, at this time of the Eternal City s Spring, to the warm hospitality of the sports figures of Rome, which will contribute to the aim of new success for Olympism. I wish to especially greet the athletes who, for the first time, have been called to take part in our very great family and who without a doubt will know, thanks to their direct experiences, that they will help us in resolving some of our current problems. Thus, I hope again to gather here in Rome, the whole IOC, with its families. And with this pleasant expectation I say to you all : Until we meet again in Rome. Giorgio de Stefani, IOC member 235

... Message of Primo Nebiolo President of the International Amateur Athletics Federation As an Italian citizen, I am particularly honoured that, in occasion of this important Session of the International Olympic Committee, our capital is host to the most prestigious members of the world of sports organisations. Rome s nomination is also an acknowledgement of the Italian sport s orgnisation s role and importance on the international scene. Italy has important names at the head of numerous International Federations - men who are diligently committed to the development of their sport in the world and to the growth of the Olympic idea, that luring beacon that has always sustained sportsmen through many problems and difficulties presented by today s society, which is, however, becoming ever more conscious of the role that Ideas, facts and people involved in sports play in the human community, wherever it maybe. Each sports body is part of the common commitment to collaborate wholeheartedly with the IOC and its President, Mr. Juan Antonio Samaranch, towards the success of the Olympic Movement and world sports. And it is in this spirit that I, as an executive of the International Athletics Federation, a body which constitutes an important technical, organisational, human and ideal power, wish this meeting the best of success in the belief that it will serve to bring new ideas and meaning to the International Olympic Movement. 237
