Declarations of Interest and approval of minutes 2. New member orientation 3. Apeldoorn subcommittee DRAFT Minutes Discussion Lisa provided a PowerPoint presentation overview of citizen committee s structure and related processes. Charlie provided the Apeldoorn sub-committee. 14 citizens and 8 officials are confirmed for travel to Apeldoorn in April/May. While in Apeldoorn, the delegations will attend various twinning and liberation related events, including the opening of Burlington Park in Apeldoorn. The two mayors will meet to discuss future business and cultural links. The Results/ Action No declarations of interest. The minutes of meeting No.2-15, held on February 4, 2015 approved. 2 Burlington Teen Tour Band will perform at some of the parades being attended by the visiting delegations. A final information meeting has been scheduled for April 16 th at 7pm in room 247 at City Hall. 21 students and three teachers will visit Apeldoorn in April as part of the school exchange program. Participating schools are Bateman, Hayden, Nelson and Pearson. Dutch students will visit Burlington in the fall of Plans for the May 2, 2015 Canada Netherlands Friendship Day (CNFD) are in progress. The event celebrates the twinning relationship with Apeldoorn, the Netherlands and highlights the contributions of Dutch Canadians in Canada, as well as the 70 th anniversary of the liberation of the Netherlands. The day will include: o dignitary speeches o remarks by high school students that participated in the travel exchange program o flag raising by local veterans o display of elementary school art o Legion colour guard o performances by Alexander s public school band and a male choir from Urk, the Netherlands. o Pipe and bugle performance of the Last Post Two minutes of silence will be observed at the event in remembrance of the sacrifices and heroic efforts of Canadian armed forces in liberating the Netherlands. The draft of the commemorative book to highlight the 10 years of twinning between Burlington and Apeldoorn has been handed to city staff for design and printing. The book is scheduled for completion in mid April. Her Royal Highness Princess Margriet and Mayor Berends of Apeldoorn contributed messages to the book. The book will be presented as gifts during the delegations visit in April/May. Page 2 of 5

3 4. Itabashi subcommittee The local elementary schools are well engaged in cultural exchange programs with Apeldoorn. Art and pen pal exchanges have been organized with Frontenac, Pineland and Alexander s schools. Their artwork will be taken to Apeldoorn in April for display. The sub-committee will set up display panels in the atrium of city hall for displaying both Burlington and Apeldoorn student artwork during the CNFD event on May 2. The committee continues to discuss potential ideas for future events: o Providing Burlington residents with a virtual tour of Dutch Museums. o Coordination of a Tri-Bloom Festival along with the Itabashi sub-committee. The festival would celebrate the spring bloom of the sakura at Spencer Smith, the tulips at Apeldoorn Park and a local bloom still to be determined. The next Apeldoorn sub-committee meeting will be held Mar. 25th. Chuck Morris provided the Itabashi sub-committee. Chuck reported on upcoming events for 2015: o Mar. 12 (6 pm) Japanese film Never Forget, Never Give Up at central library. The film is about the tsunami of 2011, what it was like then and now. o Mar. 18 (march break) amine demonstration at tansley woods by a student from Sheridan College. o Mar. 21 Ikebana (flower arranging) demonstration, $5 per participant at central library. o May 9 tea ceremony at central library o May 9 Sakura Festival The Buddhism seminar was a successful and informative event attended by 25 individuals. MOTION: to spend up to $1100 for expenditures related to the Sakura (cherry blossom) Festival. Expenses include room rental, refreshments, and honorariums for performers) MOTION: to support the signing of a Donation Agreement with Joseph Brant Museum for items acquired through Burlington s Mundialization Committee. Items related to Burlington s twin city Itabashi, Japan. The Sakura Festival will be held at the Art Gallery of Burlington The items are: Page 3 of 5

4 on May 9 th. Confirmation of performers, displays and final details will be available at the next meeting along with copies of posters for distribution. The June art display of Burlington and Itabashi elementary school art at the Art Gallery of Burlington is being coordinated. Discussions are underway with St. Mark school regarding the organization of a celebration of art to include the students, their parents and teachers. 3 antique kimonos Paddle with porcelain theatre decoration (from Itabashi) Japanware tea cup and saucer (acquired in Itabashi) 2 picture frames (from Itabashi) Origami made by children in Itabashi The sub-committee continues to have preliminary discussions regarding an elementary school exchange with Itabashi in The sub-committee is waiting to hear back from clerks department staff on where the lantern gifted to Burlington by the City of Itabashi during their visit in June 2014 to celebrate 25 years of twinning, will be displayed. The annual donation by Mr. Taroo Enomoto was presented by Mayor Goldring to Halton Food for Thought (HFFT) on March 3 rd at city hall. Mr. Enomoto is an Itabashi citizen that makes an annual donation of 100,000 yen to a local charity benefiting Burlington children. TV Cogeco interviewed Chuck Morris as well as the Executive Director of HFFT. The presentation was mentioned in Halton Inside (online) and the Hamilton Spectator. The subcommittee is liaising with the Burlington Performing Arts Centre regarding an upcoming cultural weekend in September. The sub-committee will be organizing a display for the event related to the twinning relationship with Itabashi. The Apeldoorn subcommittee is encouraged to participate as well. More details to come. The Mundialization has been approached by Museums Burlington to enter into a donation agreement regarding items Page 4 of 5

5 5. United Nations Day sub-committee related to the twinning relationship with Itabashi, Japan. The sub-committee recommends the agreement be signed by the city. The next Itabashi sub-committee meeting will be held April 1st. UN Day provided by Julie Shepherd. The sub-committee heard from Carolyn Dack, a student from Nelson secondary school who talked about the Model UN Day being organized by Iroquois Ridge, Oakville on March 31 st. The sub-committee continues to liaise with Iroquois Ridge regarding the Model UN Day. The sub-committee is promoting the event with Burlington high schools and Mundialization will sponsor the event by providing a healthy snack. The sub-committee continues to discuss the program details for Mundialization s 2015 UN day event. More details to come. As part of the planning for the 2015 UN day event, new subcommittee members Thomas, Sabrina and Melissa will meet to discuss the development of a curriculum to deliver to high school teachers and report back to the sub-committee. The next UN sub-committee meeting will be held March 19th. MOTION: to spend up to $100 to purchase a healthy snack for the students participating in the Model UN Day at Loyola High School in Oakville on March 31 st. 6. Other Business Ed delegated at the March 3rd Community and Corporate Services Committee. Committee relayed comments of support to the work done by the Mundialization committee. The committee reviewed and provided comment regarding the 6 month communication plan. As details for events for the remainder of the year have been established, they will be added to the communication plan and shared with sub-committee chairs and the city s communication advisor.
