Once gin, the Bord pproved room nd bord rte hike tht Vstly outstrips infltion, not to mention students wges nd slries. As if tht shouldn't mke students ngry enough, the Bord's vote ws unnimous. Not one trustee voted ginst milking oncmpus students for nother $ semester. Students will receive few benefits from the rise in fees. All oncmpus students will receive voice mil (thus rendering the nswering mchine they bought when they first cme here obsolete). Some of the money will go to technology updtes. All mel plns will be incresed by $33, thus forcing on-cmpus students to py for more cmpus food. Or, more likely, py more for the sme mount of cmpus food. As usul, the Bord decided to push the rte hike through t their List meeting of the semester, just s students re strting to file out of Bowling Green. By Jnury, the increse will be lrgely forgotten nd ccepted before it kicks in next fll. This is the lst nd gretest insult to students in semester which strted with tuition rise pssed by the Bord tht, strngely enough, corresponded with rise for President Ribeu. When will it end? In ech of the lst few yers there hve been tuition nd fee increses. The Bord might pride itself on the fct tht this yer's rise is the lowest in yers, but hve wges pid to working students risen s fst s the costs of going to school? The Bord of Trustees is indictive of the University's contrdictions. The University espouses "Students First." "They cme out on 'D' with this ferocious type of gme," sid Stcey, who mde the ll-tournment tem. The Flcons only scored four points on their first possessions. The Hoosiers' defense pressured nd forced the Flcons to tke bd shots. As result BG wsn't in its gme on defense nd IU took dvntge. After BG scored to brek up the 2-2 run, IU continued to roll going on 8- run. The Hoosiers knew BG's strength is going to Stcey down low. 'They're going to tke wy wht you do well," Dkich sid. Stcey ended up shooting 2 percent from the field nd scoring 4 points. But on the defensive end he provided turnovers, steling the bll three times. The tem's gol ws to improve from Thursdy to Sturdy. Associte! Press Photo IU coch Bob Knight sits with former ssistnt nd current BG coch, Dn Dkich. "I think we re better thn we were Thursdy," Dkich sid. "We were just worn out." The biggest surprise ws the contribution from Len Mtel. The BG freshmn forwrd scored tem-highs in points nd rebounds. The 6-9 ntive from Merrillville, Ind. scored his first double-double with 5 points nd rebounds. "I'm just feeling more nd more comfortble with my surroundings, djusting from the high school to the college gme," Mtel sid. Mtel hit 4 of 5 shots nd hit ll seven free throws ttempted. After posting 2 first-hlf turnovers, the Hoosiers only hd one in the second hlf. "I told them if we turned the bll over twice, I ws going to shoot three guys," Knight sid. leers come bck to win -I BG pulls out win ginst Western Michign. By WILLIAM R. SANDERSON Western Michign ws less thn five minutes wy from winning their second gme of the yer. Insted, the Flcons tcked up two gols in 27 seconds nd went on to 5-3 win. The Flcons' record improves to 7-7- overll nd 6-6- in the Centrl Collegite Hockey Assocition. Western Michign's record drops to "We cn't get win," WMU coch Bill Wilkinson sid. "Tht ws pretty good college hockey gme. Both tems hd lot of opportunities to score. BG got the most out of it." Western ws up 3- going into the second intermission, but the Flcons rllied for four consecutive gols. "Our concentrtion ws shrper, which is wht I thought it ws lcking in the first two periods," BG coch Buddy Powers sid. "We were here physiclly, but we weren't here menilly In the third period we gve good physicl effort nd good mentl effort." The Broncos were plying with only five on defense. Sophomore Kevin Cluson left Western Michign for personl resons. "I think we wore them down little bit," Powers sid. "Their defense got tired." Flcon defensemn Doug Schueller shot high wrist shot tht deflected in off of Western defender. The gol tied the gum t 6:29. Seconds lter, BG defensemn Mike Jones rushed the Western net. Forwrd Crig Desjrlis followed Jones in nd received rebound which he jmmed through WMU golie Jeff Rcynert's "I ws directly behind (Jones) nd the puck cme right out to me," Desjrlis sid. "I just shot it blindly. I don't think the golie sw it. It ws bng bng ply." Ryn Murphy iced the gme when he siled the puck down the ice for n empty-net gol. "If you win the third period lot of the time you're going to win the gme," BG defensemn Doug Schueller sid. "We plyed pretty close to sixty minutes, but we didn't bury our chnces. We buried our chnces in the lst 2 minutes nd tht's the gme." The tems exchnged gols in the first period. WMU right wing Frnk Novock tipped in n Austin Miller point shot t 3:55. At the 5:7 mrk, BG dented the scorebord. Defensemn Mike Jones glided into the slot nd scored on rebound from Murphy shot. The Broncos took the led on two second period gols. A turnover gve Western left wing Dvid Gove brekwy. Gove bet Svrd over the glove with bckhnder. Lte in the period, WMU's Chuck Mindel skted round the gol nd shot the puck off Svrd. The gol gve Western the 3- led. The first two periods fetured number of missed opportunities for both sides. Powers ws plesed with the third period win, prticulrly becuse BG is off until fter Christms. "Our guys plyed with n wful lot of hert," Powers sid. "They believed in themselves tht they could come bck nd get the job done." BG finds gols, victory through third period The Flcons end bd hbit with strong performnce in the finl 2 minutes. By DIANA EDELMAN Sturdy's win ginst Western Michign ws big one for the Flcons. After being down 3- going into the third period, BG relumed tcf the ice looking very different from the tem tht plyed through the first two periods. The first two periods were mrred with sloppy psses, brekdowns nd gols for WMU. But in the third period things went right. Tht hs not hppened for BG in while. "We won couple in the third period erlier this yer," coch Buddy Powers sid. "But ltely in the third things hve been going the other wy." Powers ttributes the lpse in periods one nd two to the tem hving physicl effort but lck of mentl effort. Concentrtion ws shrper in the third period, helping the Flcons rlly for comebck. "We hd lot of chnces in the first two periods to score," sophomore Doug Schueller sid. "But if you don't bury your chnces then things like tht hppen you get down." BG cme out in the third nd ws ble to convert its chnces into gols, nd eventully converted the gme into two points in the Centrl Collegite Hockey Assocition stndings. "We just kopw wht we hd to do," Schueller sid. "Everyone got little bit ngry becuse we knew we were better tem, hd better skill, nd we just cme out nd got the job done." Ltely it hs been struggle for BG to ply 6 minutes of hockey, but Sturdy, the tem got s close s it hs come for while. In the third period BG ws more on its toes, which put WMU more on its hels. BG shut out WMU in the third, even when the Broncos were up mn in the lst minutes of regultion. Sturdy's wip closes out the first hlf of the seson on positive note for BG, the 7th plce tem (7-7- overll, 6-6- CCHA), stnding t.5. "(The win) is huge," sid junior Crig Desjrlis, who scored the gme-winner. "We hve two weeks off now nd we wnted to go out on winning note. For the first time in couple of weeks we were down t the second intermission, but we cme bck." The effort in the third period wore WMU down, especilly its defefise. And it proved tht BG hs the bility to come bck. Powers pointed out tht it took lot of hert to comebck in the third period fter being down two gols nd ble to get the "job done." "Obviously we would hve liked to hve won the gme 7- nd gone off, but this wy it is lmost more stisfying," Powers sid. "We hd to dig down deep to come bck, nd the guys did. They plyed with n wful lot of hert in the third period nd mde some good things hppen." \
