SPIE Student Chapter Université Laval Annual Report We held for the first time this year an industrial roundtable, where students could discuss directly with five professionals in optics and photonics.

SPIE Univ. Laval Chapter Annual report About us Our chapter is composed of 45 graduate and undergraduate students in optics and photonics at Université Laval (Québec City, Canada), and of 5 alumni. Combined with Université Laval s OSA student chapter, we form the REPOL (Regroupement des Étudiants en Optique et Photonique de Laval), representing over than 200 graduate students in optics and photonics. Our laboratories and offices are located in the Center for Optics, Photonics and Lasers (COPL) at Université Laval. Our website is The main goal of our chapter is to gather, inform and represent students from Université Laval who are members of SPIE and OSA. More specifically, the REPOL aims to: organize conferences and workshops; establish a link between university and industry; inform students about new developments in optics and photonics; organize social, cultural and sportive events; promote the science of light to high school students; correspond with other OSA and SPIE chapters around the world; manage the chapter s funds. Although being a member of both OSA and SPIE is encouraged, it is generally not a mandatory criterion to participate in our chapter s activities. We prefer to include as many people as possible without forcing anyone to pay membership fees... though, as mentioned, it is encouraged. In December 2011 we held a Recruitment Lunch. The main goal of this activity was to inform non-members of what our chapter is, what it does and how students can take advantage of being a member. We also received at that time considerable support from the COPL research center. Indeed, the COPL entirely paid the membership fees of every new member. Thanks to that activity, the number of members had increased from 34 to 70. But since the free membership was only temporary, our numbers have since dwindled to 45. On the other hand, our activities are still as popular, since every one is welcome: the vitality of the student chapter has indeed not declined at all. On the contrary.

SPIE Univ. Laval Chapter Annual report We are presently discussing with the COPL to receive the same financial support, in order to plan a similar recruitment activity. We hope that the number of OSA and SPIE students in our chapter will rise again, so to be more representative of the level of participation in the miscellaneous events we organize. 6 SPIE Univ. Laval Chapter Annual report Activities The main strength of our student chapter is the number and diversity of the events we organize. In were held traditional activities such as the Photonics Games, the Khet tournament and the REPOL-COPL Grant, but also new ones such as an industrial roundtable and a pétanque tournament. Here are briefly presented all those activities. More information and photos can be found on our website : Photonics Games Founded by our chapter, the Photonic Games is an annual competition where teams of high school students tackle optical challenges. The fifth edition of the Photonics Games (Jeux Photoniques) was held November 1 st Overall, 125 high school students from 5 schools attended, and no less than 60 undergraduate and graduate students volunteered to make this event a great success! More details can be found on : The sixth edition will take place October 30 th We are presently working to increase the number of high school students to 160! FEMTO project Sensing a lack of information about careers in optics, we had been thinking about creating an outreach activity about careers for more than two years. We used the CIPI Canadian Photonic Kit as a starting point for our project. Combining that kit with our holography laboratory, and adding new elements, gave rise to FEMTO: the Framework of Educative Materials for Teaching Optics. FEMTO is divided in four parts: 1. Canadian Photonic Kit upgraded with new experiments; 2. Demonstration laboratory dedicated to outreach and training containing five setups (holography, optical fiber, oximeter, optical aberrations and lasers); 3. Interviews with professionals and information about careers in optics and photonics;

SPIE Univ. Laval Chapter Annual report Posters and other resources. Work on the FEMTO project is still in progress (and it progresses really well!). All the details will be available online in March 2014: Student Paper Contest : REPOL-COPL Grant Every year, we hold a student paper competition. In February 2013, four participants presented their research to a jury composed of three professors. We thank all the applicants for their excellent work and remarkable oral presentations, and hope that many will participate again next year. (This year s winner was Vincent Marceau, our all-star Communications Officer.) Visiting lecturer We invited in November 2012 Dr Joseph A. Shaw to give a public lecture about optical phenomena in nature. This public presentation was a nice review of these phenomena and has been appreciated by all. We also want to invite another lecturer before the end of 2013, and are presently working in that regard. Industrial Events In February 2013, we held an industrial roundtable during which students had the opportunity to ask questions to professionals having a career in optics and to receive some comments and perspectives about this field of industry (see cover photo). This was the first time we held such an event and it was very well appreciated both by the students and professionals who took part. We will without a single doubt reiterate in 2014! We also organized two industrial visits, and plan to organize some more in the year to come.

SPIE Univ. Laval Chapter Annual report Sports REPOL is proud to support its running club, ice skating club and soccer team, the FC OPL. We also organized a friendly pétanque tournament, where seven teams competed for top honors. During the FIFA World Cup and UEFA Champions League soccer tournaments, we organized get-togethers to watch the ultimate matches. We plan to renew these appreciated activities during Sochi s Winter Olympic Games in Social Events REPOL plans and carries out most of the networking and social events at the COPL. Again this year, many social activities were organized. They allow graduate students from miscellaneous research groups to interact and know each other, and provide a great opportunity for undergraduate students to discuss with graduates and professors. Christmas and Summer parties were both great successes, as well as the Khet tournament (where 26 students competed for ultimate glory) and the traditional outing to a sugar shack (more than 40 participants).
