JITHENDER REDDY: GOVERNMENT OF INDIA MINISTRY OF YOUTH AFFAIRS & SPORTS (DEPARTMENT OF SPORTS) LOK SABHA UNSTARRED QUESTION NO.2935 TO BE ANSWERED ON Training for Rio Olympics 2016 Will the Minister of YOUTH AFFAIRS AND SPORTS be pleased to state: (a) whether the Government has provided financial assistance and training support to athletes who have qualified for participation in Rio Olympics 2016 till date, and if so, the details thereof, sports discipline-wise including names of athletes; (b) whether the Government has taken steps to identify the potential medal winner from non-priority sports category in Rio Olympics 2016, if so, the details thereof, sports discipline-wise including names of athletes; (c) the details of proposals received from athletes belonging to non-priority sports category list seeking financial assistance/training support in preparation for Rio Olympics 2016 during the last three years, along with the details of such proposals pending/cleared, sports discipline-wise including the names of athletes; and (d) whether the Government is providing financial assistance and training for those athletes who are yet to complete the qualification process, and if so, the details thereof, sports discipline-wise along with a list of athletes being supported in this regard? ANSWER THE MINISTER OF STATE (INDEPENDENT CHARGE) FOR YOUTH AFFAIRS AND SPORTS (SHRI SARBANANDA SONOWAL) (a) to (d): Indian sportspersons and teams who have earned quota place for India for participation in Rio Olympics 2016 and identified probable sportspersons and teams who are expected to qualify for participation are being trained under the Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports Scheme of Assistance to National Sports Federations (NSFs) and National Sports Development Fund (NSDF) especially Target Olympic Podium (TOP) Scheme under NSDF. Details of assistance provided to National Sports Federations (NSFs) for benefit of sportspersons of sports disciplines included in High Priority, Priority,

2 General and Other categories under the Scheme of Assistance to NSFs during the last three years and current year is given in Annexure-I. Details of assistance provided to sportspersons from NSDF during last three years and current year is given in Annexure II. List of athletes under TOP scheme are given in Annexure-III. Sports disciplines having potential medal winners in Olympic Games in 2016 under Scheme of Assistance to NSFs have been assisted. Approval has been given for financial assistance from NSDF to some other athletes in other disciplines also. As per information provided by Sports Authority of India (SAI), in certain sports disciplines the qualification process for 2016 Rio Olympic Games goes upto July, Apart from sportspersons and teams who have already earned quota places for India for participation in Rio Olympics 2016, Indian sportspersons and teams are expected to win quota places in following sports disciplines:- 1. Archery (qualification process goes upto June, 2016). 2. Athletics (qualification process goes upto July, 2016) 3. Badminton (qualification process goes upto May, 2016 based on World ranking) 4. Boxing (qualification process goes upto June, 2016) 5. Golf (qualification process goes upto July, 2016 based Olympic Golf ranking) 6. Tennis (qualification process goes upto May, 2016 based on World ranking) 7. Weightlifting (qualification process goes upto April, 2016) 8. Wrestling (qualification process goes upto May, 2016) Qualification process for hockey and shooting is over. ****
