Postage Stamps of Ukraine

1 Ukrainian Cossacks Ukrainians in Canada On March 3rd, ; Ukraine issued its first two commemorative stamps. The first stamp celebrates the founding of Zaporoszka Sich. On the stamp is the founder, Hetman Dmytro Bajda Vyshnevetskyj with two fellow brothers in arms. In the top right hand corner is the coat of arms. On March 3rd, ;Ukraine issued its second two commemorative stamp. This stamp celebrates the first arrival of Ukrainian settlers in The stamp is depicted with a young couple from the Carpathian mountain region ready to leave to go to Canada. Canada is depicted in the top left hand corner by the red Maple Leaf. In addition, their early life in Canada is depicted in the top right hand corner by stylized red buildings. Mykola Lysenko On March 22nd, ; Ukraine issued a stamp commemorating the 150th anniversary of the birth of the founder of Ukrainian classical music, Mykola Lysenko. The stamp is comprised of a portrait photo taken of the composer in 1903; the number 150 to signify 150 years anniversary of birth plus a segment of the musical score from his opera "Taras Bulba". Mykola Lysenko is considered to be the father of Ukrainian music. As a composer, musical ethnographist, choir-director, pianist plus a social-activist, he elevated Ukrainian music to a higher cultural level. He was born in a small village in the Poltava region. His mother taught him to play piano at a young age. In 1860, he studied music at Kharkiv; 1864 he finished his university studies in Kyiv. From 1867 to 1869; he continued his piano studies at Leipsig, Germany. In 1869, he returned to Kyiv to teach piano. From 1874 to 1875, he travelled to St. Peterburg to study orchestration with M. Rymsky- Korsykov. On his return to Kyiv in 1876; M. Lysenko began to work on many facets of Ukrainian music. He continually taught piano playing and in 1904 started his own music-drama school. As a pianist, he gave concerts. He organized choirs and toured with them throughout the country. He founded a philharmonic symphony group in Kyiv. As a music ethnographist, he travelled throughout the countryside collecting and recording songs and melodies. M. Lysenko was a prolific producer of musical works. He produced numerous piano and string-quartet works. In addition, he produced 280 works for voice and piano; plus 120 works for mixed choir and piano. His other major achievement was putting to music about 80 poems by Taras Shevchenko. He also wrote numerous operas and operettas. M. Lysenko was also active in Ukrainian political and community life. As a result, he was continuously being arrested by Russian imperialist authorities for his activities. He died in 1912 and is buried in Kyiv.

2 Narbut Definitive Set On May 16th, ; Ukraine issued its next commemorative stamps based on the 30 shahiv definitive issue design of 1918 by H. Narbut. Mykola Kostomarov On May 16th, ; Ukraine issued a stamps, commemorating the 175th Anniversary of Mykola Kostamarov's birth, a renown historian, publicist and writer.the stamp is of a dark olive colour. It shows the name of the country in both Latin and Cyrillic letters. This is the only stamp issued in with the inscription Ukraine rather than the term Ukrainian Post. In addition, the stamp shows a portrait of Kostamarov, the dates ; a vignette of a writer's quill, a page from a book, an olive branch and the date of issue -. Before the demise of the Soviet Union, a Kostamariv stamp was intended to be issued as a set of stamps honouring prominent people.

3 Barcelona Summer Olympics On July 25th, ; Ukrainian Post issued a set of 3 stamps commemorating the Barcelona Summer Games.. Although Ukraine was an independent country at this time, Ukrainian athletes were required to compete in the XXV Summer Olympic Games at Barcelona as part of the "Unified Team". Prior, Ukrainian athletes competed in various Olympic games between 1952 and 1988 as part of the USSR Olympic team. In total, Ukrainian athletes have won a total of 176 gold, 114 silver and 110 bronze medals. The 3 and 5 krb stamps are similar and show a rhythmic gymnast (believed to be Oleksandra Timoshenko) performing her routine. Oleksandra won a gold medal in rhythmic gymnastics. The 4 krb stamp shows a pole vaulter (believed to be Serhyj Bubka). He failed to win any medals. The stamps are inscribed with the words "Ukrainian Post" and "XXV Olympiad Games Barcelona '92". The Olympic symbol - the five rings was omitted. A pictorial cancellation was used for the First Day of Issue covers. Cancellation was done in Kyiv. On December 10, 1994; Ukrainian Post issued a souvenir sheet commemorating all the Ukrainian medal winners. National Flag and Trident Elblem World Forum of Ukrainians On August 19th, ; Ukraine issued a commemorative stamp showing the state flag (blue and yellow) and the state emblem - the Trident. This stamp was issued to commemorate the first Anniversary of Ukraine's declaration of independence on August 24th. A pictorial cancellation was used for the First Day of Issue cover. Cancellation was done in On August 19th, ; Ukraine issued its second stamp, commemorating the First World Forum of Ukrainians. On the eve of the first anniversary of Ukraine's declaration of independence, representatives from various Ukrainian organizations throughout the whole world met in Kyiv. The 2 krb stamp depicts three cranes - symbolizing the return of individuals from the diaspora back to Ukraine. Two pictorial cancellations were used for the First Day of Issue covers. A First Day cancel was used on August 19th,. A second cancellation was done during the Forum.

4 Union of Ukrainian Philatelists - 25 Years On August 19th, ; Ukraine issued a souvenir sheet with a perferated stamp in the top left-hand corner. The stamp was issued to honour the 25th. Anniversary of the Union of Philatelists of Ukraine. The stamp was to be issued in December at the Philatelic Exhibition at Ivano-Frankivsk. The stamp depicts a trio ensemble of traditional folk musicians playing the violin, tsymbaly (dolcimer) and the frame drum. On the sheet, there are individuals performing a traditional dance. International Letter Writing World Congress of Lawyers On August 19th, ; Ukraine issued a commemorative stamp to honour Letter Writing Week.The stamp depicts the Universal Postal Union emblem, the Ukrainian flag plus an individual writing a letter. On October 18th, ; Ukraine issued a stamp commemorating the First World Congress of Ukrainian Lawyers, being held in Kyiv from October 18 to 23,. The stamp shows the Ukrainian symbol - the trident plus the legal system's symbol - the "Scales of Justice".

5 Ukrainian Embroidery Mohyla Academy On November 16th, ; Ukraine issued a commemorative stamp depicting folk embroidery. The stamp depicts the embroidery styles from the Kyiv and Kherson regions of Ukraine. The two roosters are from the Kherson region; while the roses are from the Kyiv area. On March 22nd, ; Ukraine issued a commemorative stamps marking the reestablishment of Kyiv's Kyivo- Mohylanska Academija in It was originally founded in in 1632 by Metropolitan Petro Mohyla. The stamp shows the charter granted to the Academy plus Petro Mohyla's coat-ofarms. Mohyla Academy Ukrainian Diaspora in Austria On March 22nd, ; Ukraine issued a commemorative stamps marking the reestablishment of Kyiv's Kyivo- Mohylanska Academija in It was originally founded in in 1632 by Metropolitan Petro Mohyla. The stamp shows the charter granted to the Academy plus Petro Mohyla's coat-ofarms. On November 27th, ; Ukraine commemorated the presence of Ukrainian settlers in Austria. The stamp depicts three settlers dressed in traditional costumes from the Halychyna and Bukovina regions. In addition, the stamp also has the coatsof-arms from Austria and Ukraine. A special pictorial cancellation was used for the First Day of Issue.

6 Medal Winners at Barcelona Games On December 14th, ; Ukraine issued a souvenir sheet, honouring its Olympic winners at the Barcelona Summer Olympic Games. It shows a runner plus the list of medal winners. It gives the number of medal winners to be 28. It also lists the number of gold, silver and bronze medals won in individual and group meets. A special pictorial cancellation was used for the First Day of Issue.
