3 1. Background 1.1. Purpose - To draw attention from the public by engaging artists who are active in the cultural and artistic areas in developing the Paralympic posters - To enhance Korea s cultural status and international recognition by developing Paralympic posters that incorporate the spirit of the PyeongChang 2018 Paralympic Winter Games and the identity of PyeongChang, Korea - To upholster the brand value of the Games by delivering the spirit of the Paralympic Games of making a more inclusive world through sports 1.2. Story Our journey to the PyeongChang 2018 Games started already a generation ago, when we hosted the Seoul 1988 Summer Games for the first time in Korea. We know that sports have the energy to connect the world so that they could be enjoyed together regardless of religion, ideology, gender and age without any discrimination. Once again, Korea came forward with united passion in order to open up a new horizon. The overwhelming support and passion of the Korean public and the residents of Gangwon Province made it possible to win the bid to host the PyeongChang 2018 Games after the third bid. Our united passion toward the Games proved that everything that we dream of is possible. The Paralympic Winter Games PyeongChang 2018 will show that the Winter Games is an event where people from all over the world can join together. After the Rio Games, we are next. While Seoul 1988 put Korea on the map, PyeongChang 2018 presents an opportunity to showcase what Korea and Gangwon Province achieved within one generation and to take a step forward beyond that, opening up a new horizon. It is an opportunity to share and celebrate the progress of Korea with the world. It is an opportunity for us to gather together and participate in the Games and to experience a creative Korea. We will open up a new horizon by uniting the hard work and passion of all the people who participate in the Games, which will become the catalyst for the new growth and new potential of the next generation. We will transform Gangwon Province, the most beautiful place in Korea with sea and mountains together, from a small region in Korea into a hub of winter sports and sports tourism in Asia. Through the united passion of the Korean people, athletes participating in the Games and spectators, we will connect the values of the Paralympic Games to the world. Sports Para alpine skiing: Para alpine skiing was developed when injured veterans began practicing the sport after their return from World War II. Just like Olympic alpine skiing, it features the following events: Downhill, Super-G, Super Combined, Giant Slalom and Slalom. Athletes are classified into Visually Impaired (B1-B3), Standing (LW1-LW9) and Sitting (LW10-LW12) categories. Slalom has a course that demands short and abrupt turns while Giant Slalom has a course with greater turning radius. Super-G and Downhill have fewer turns and include wider gates in some segments of the course. Skiers speeding down the slope in these events can reach the speed of 100km an hour. Para biathlon: Para biathlon is a sport that combines cross-country skiing and rifle shooting, two disciplines that are very different from each other. Para biathlon athletes are divided into sitting, standing, and visually impaired categories. The sport was adopted as a formal discipline at the Paralympic Winter Games in Lillehammer in At the Paralympic Winter Games, a total of 18 events are contended by dividing them into men (the visually impaired, standing, and sitting) and women (the visually impaired, standing, and sitting). Para cross-country skiing: Para cross-country skiing for athletes with an impairment is about gliding across a snow-covered field in the shortest possible time frame. Athletes are classified into sitting, standing, and visually impaired categories for this discipline. The Paralympic Winter Games present a total 20 events for men and women, respectively with categories of visually impaired, sitting, and standing. Para ice hockey: Para ice hockey is a fast-paced, highly physical sport which is played by men and women athletes with a physical impairment in the lower part of the body. Most of the athletes use the same protection equipment as used in ordinary ice hockey. And they use sledges which have double blades instead of wearing skates. The height of the main frame must be between 8.5 to 9.5cm above the ice, and the blades may not be longer than one-third of the total length of the sled. The puck must be able to pass underneath the sledge. Players use two sticks with a hooked wooden blade at one end (for puck handling and ambidextrous shooting) and a pick (for propelling of the sled) at the other end.
11 The size of the ice hockey rink is 56-61m in length and 26-30m in width. However, the minimum standard dimensions for an ice hockey to hold an international competition are 60m in length and 29m in width. The height and the width of the goal are 1.2 and 1.8m, respectively. It is surrounded by a fence that is made of lumber or plastic materials, which is a height of m. The rink is divided into two sections by a red-coloured centre line drawn in the centre. And, again, the rink is divided into three areas with two blue lines that are in between the goals. Para snowboard: Para snowboard is an adaptive version of Snowboard for athletes with impairments. Athletes are classified into the upper limb(s) impairment (SB-UL) category and the lower limb(s) impairment (SBLL-1, SBLL-2) category. Para snowboard was first introduced at the Paralympics as part of the Alpine Skiing events at the Sochi 2014 Paralympic Winter Games. It is planned to be held as a single sport at the PyeongChang 2018 Paralympic Winter Games. At the Winter Paralympics, a total of 10 events will be competed, including Snowboard Cross (men/women) and the Banked Slalom (men/women). Wheelchair curling: Wheelchair curling is an adaptive version of curling, which is a popular winter sports, for the impaired. In Europe and North America, it has been such a loved event that even senior clubs were formed a long time ago. It was adopted as a formal event in the 2006 Torino Winter Paralympic programme. At the Paralympics one medal event is competed.
