3 2 Biography or Historical Sketch Founded in 1921 by Eugenia Schuster ( ), the Pan American Round Table of El Paso is a nonprofit women s organization which promotes mutual knowledge, understanding, and friendship among the peoples of the western hemisphere through educational forums and lectures, social gatherings, study groups, community involvement and activities, and the annual celebration of Pan American Day on April 14. The organization s goals include improving international relations by establishing friendships with women from different countries, and to increase members knowledge about the Pan American nations with a focus on women s concerns and issues. For over eighty years, members of the El Paso Round Table have learned about the culture, geography, society, economy, politics, and history of the Pan American nations (now the Organization of American States), and met with members of other Round Tables in North, Central, and South America during state and international Round Table conventions and other activities. The El Paso Round Table is unique as it is the only Round Table with members from two different countries: El Paso, Texas and Juarez, Mexico. The origins of Pan Americanism date from April 14, 1890, when representatives of twenty-five American nations met and formed the Commercial Bureau of the American Republics, later changed to the Pan American Union in In the United States, Florence Terry Griswold of San Antonio, Texas became interested in Pan Americanism and believed that goals of the Pan American Union could be advanced by the women of the Americas. In 1916 she founded the Pan American Movement and established the first Round Table in San Antonio, Texas. During this time, Eugenia Schuster, along with Mrs. Alberto Matero, became involved with Amigos Listos to help aid Mexican citizens fleeing the country during the Mexican Revolution. Schuster became aware of the need for better awareness of international matters and border issues, and decided to found her own Round Table chapter in El Paso in 1921 and served as its first director. The El Paso Round Table s first meeting was held on November 6, 1921 in Schuster s home. In addition to the director, twenty-five vice-presidents (to represent each of the original twenty-five Pan-American nations) were elected. Early committees included: Courtesy; Luncheon; Music; Rules and Regulations; Finance; Membership; Press; Publicity; Reservation; Decoration; and Table. Since the 1920s, luncheons, meriendas, and teas often featured guest speakers, who discussed culture, diplomacy, and history, art displays, and music programs. Meetings were held in both El Paso and Juarez and usually featured a Pan American Union country as its theme. The chapter also created study groups and met to study the literature of the Pan-American nations. Political and social issues were also discussed at luncheons and events, and in 1946 a junior Pan American Round Table was established at the Texas College of Mines. In 1947 the chapter commissioned El Paso artist Tom Lea to paint a portrait of Benito Juarez, which was presented to the U.S. Department of State for display in the Blair-Lee House in During the 1950s and 1960s, diplomats and guest speakers lectured on

4 such topics such as stopping the spread of Communism to Latin American countries, feminism, and encouraging economic development. Members also became involved in civic affairs, sponsored cultural and educational events, funded scholarships to the University of Texas at El Paso, participated in the El Paso Sun Carnival by sponsoring a duchess or princess, and celebrated Founder s Day in January and Pan American Day (April 14 th ). Pan American Day typically included a presentation of flags of the Pan American counties, official ceremonies in Juarez and at Ft. Bliss, and other diplomatic and government officials. The Round Table also participated in creating the state organization, the Pan American Round Tables of Texas, in 1922, and became a member of the international organization, the Alliance of Pan American Round Tables, founded in Mexico City in By the 1970s, the El Paso Round Table consisted of 150 active members and 108 sustaining members, many of them daughters and granddaughters of the original members, including Eugenia Schuster s family. In 1982 the El Paso Round Table hosted the Alliance s biennial convention, and in 1988 El Pasoan Grace Lake was named Pan American Women of the Year. In 1991, the El Paso Round Table hosted the 45 th State Convention, and continues to be active in the El Paso and Juarez communities and the state and international Round Table organizations. 3 Series Description or Arrangement The Pan American Round Table of El Paso records are arranged in twelve series: Series I. The constitution and by-laws series consists of the chapter s constitution, bylaws, standing and committee rules, amendments to the constitution, and proposed changes. The minutes and resolutions series documents chapter meetings, activities, operations and decisions, and contains memorial and other types of resolutions passed by the chapter. The third series, chapter history, includes historical accounts of Eugenia Schuster, the Schuster family, Florence Terry Griswold, and the Pan American Round Table of El Paso. Chapter history also contains chapter jewelry with the Pan American Round Table insignia and other mementos important to the chapter and its history. Officers papers and reports consists of director s annual reports, correspondence, and other papers, secretary and treasurer reports and correspondence, and other committee and chapter reports, which document the chapter s activities, operations, administrative matters, and finances. Correspondence includes general correspondence and also documents the chapter s activities, operations, administrative matters, and finances. The membership series contains membership cards, rosters and lists of active, honorary, sustaining, and complimentary members, and other information about

7 members lives and their involvement in the Pan American Round Table of El Paso. Activities and events cover the chapter s scholarship program, meetings, activities, schedules, educational programs, study groups, social events, chapter installations, Founder s Day and Pan American Day activities, and participation in the annual Sun Carnival. Photographs and other media document chapter activities and events, state and Alliance conventions, and chapter members. The scrapbooks series consists of scrapbooks containing photographs, clippings, programs, and other material, which document the chapter activities, important news items, and information about the chapter s members and their activities and travels. Publications include works published by the Pan American Round Table of El Paso, the Pan American Round Tables of Texas, the Alliance of Pan American Round Tables, other chapters, and other organizations, which primarily cover Round Tables activities, events and news, Pan Americanism, and other subjects, issues, and events important to the Pan American Round Tables. The Pan American Round Tables of Texas series documents the chapter s participation in the organization and its activities and conventions. The Alliance of Pan American Round Tables series contains information about the chapter s involvement with that organization, members leadership roles and travels to conventions, and about the Alliance itself. Pan American Round Table painting at the El Paso County Historical Society. Painting is of Lady Liberty (Libertad) by Pandura M. standing on a world globe (standing on top of the Americas) surrounded by flags of the Pan American nations. The painting has an ornate gold frame with an eagle at the top and floral decorations.
