1 To: Mayor David Bieter, Council President David Eberle and Boise City Council On behalf of the men and women of the Boise Police Department, we present to the City Council and our community this business performance summary; our most recent review of crime statistics from Boise City for 2007, and relevant crime trends through the past decade. It s a review that I, as Chief am proud to present, as this report reflects the highest quality of services delivered daily by department employees, both sworn and nonsworn, a continuation of the professional response citizens have come to expect and depend on, and results that only come thanks to years of cooperative efforts between citizens of this community and it s police department. Since becoming Chief of Police for the City of Boise in 2005, I have used a business model perspective to shape management and leadership of the department from the ground up. As such, we have provided quarterly reports summarizing our business performance in our role of providing quality public safety services to the citizens of Boise. Equally important, for the past three years, we have provided annual reports detailing our core business performance. Our 2007 business performance summary contains the following: UCR data Part I & Part II crimes Response times Citation activity This performance summary provides both successes and challenges. We are particularly proud of the 2007 statistics which reflect a continuing decline in almost all major crimes categories over the past decade. With more citizens, yet fewer crimes, we see fewer victims, fewer faces who have known the fear of violent crime. Instead we see more citizens who say they feel secure in their neighborhoods and confident about the services their police department provides. Sadly, we still see too much violence in homes, which too often leads to cycles of violence in families. Behind domestic violence statistics are the faces of children. These faces pose a challenge to all of us to provide a safe, protective environment where these children aren t condemned to a life of despair, but open to a world opportunity. These statistics are also submitted the State of Idaho and the FBI, which later this year will release their reports on national crime trends and city comparisons. While it s interesting to compare statistics among cities and regions, the standard of excellence pursued by the Boise Police Department is measured by our citizens, in our neighborhoods, and by the feeling of safety all Boise residents have in their homes, on their streets, in their schools, parks and businesses. Thank you for your support.
