Birthday Tuesday February 6th 11:30 a.m. Birthday Lunch For those with February birthdays, lunch is sponsored by the Advisory Committee. Advisory Committee Bulletin Sign-up by Tuesday, January 30th. Seniors, we are now on our way into another year at River s Bend Senior Center and as the newly elected President of the Advisory Committee, I would like you to know that this committee is ready for action. We will help in planning some of the yearly events and self sponsor some also. Last month the trip to Wendover had to be canceled because of lack of participation where we needed 10 people to make a pick up at the center. That failed. If we are to be successful in plann ing, participation is the number one item we must count on. Day and night BINGO is one way we make our money, the Soda Machine is another and of course throughout the year there are various other fund raising functions that are planned, but we depend on the membership to make them successful. We cannot waste volunteer hours on planning events only to have to cancel. We also sponsor most of the entertainment that happens at the center. We would like to plan other outside day trips, and once again support is the key to success or failure If anyone has suggestions or ideas for trips or functions please contact a member of the Advisory Committee. Remember, Salt Lake County Aging Services does not sponsor most of the trips or functions that are held. It is through your support that the Committee earns the money to make them happen. PLEASE HELP US HELP YOU! - Joe Ross. Advisory Committee President Date & Time of Event Sign-ups to Remember We would like to introduce you to our Quadrennial River s Bend Winter Senior Olympic being hosted this year from February 9th-23rd. There will be a total of 14 events held this year and we are eagerly awaiting your participation. Attend our opening Ceremony on February 9th at 10:45a.m. Come craft a pennant to carry in the ceremony from February 5th-7th, and it will be entered into the design competition. Sign up for any of our events to compete. Space for some events is limited, so you may want to register early. Here is some information about some events you may not be familiar with: Speed Billiards The only thing that matters in this game is how fast you can pocket balls. Tabletop Curling Test your aim to float a paper plate stone into a target. Snow Man Makers Bring this winter tradition indoors and sculpt a snowman. Bean Bag Toss In this classic game, try your throwing and land beanbags into Olympic targets. Olympic Wordsearch A game for anyone and everyone to search for Olympic-themed words. Man-on-the Mountain Jell-o Eating Who can eat a mountain of sugar-free Jell-o the quickest? Snowball Throw One big free-for all; toss as many paper snowballs as you can onto the other team s side! 5 Healthy Eating Eating right doesn t have to be complicated. Before you eat, think about what goes on your plate or in your bowl. Choose foods that provide the nutrients you need without too many calories. Try these tips: 1. Make half your plate fruits & vegetables. Eat a variety of vegetables, especially dark-green, red and orange vegetables plus beans and peas. Fresh, frozen and canned vegetables all count. Choose reduced sodium or no-salt-added canned vegetables. Add fruit to meals and snacks. Buy fruits that are dried, frozen or canned in water or 100% juice, as well as fresh fruits. 2. Make at least half your grains whole. Choose 100% whole-grain breads, cereals, crackers, pasta and brown rice. Also, look for fiber-rich cereals to help stay regular. 3. Switch to fat-free or low-fat milk, yogurt & cheese. Older adults need more calcium and vitamin D to help keep bones healthy. Include three servings of fat-free or low-fat milk, yogurt or cheese each day. If you are lactose intolerant, try lactose-free milk or a calcium-fortified soy beverage. 4. Vary your protein choices. Eat a variety of foods from the protein food group each week, such as seafood, nuts, and beans and peas, as well as lean meat, poultry and eggs. 5. Cut back on sodium & empty calories from solid fats & added sugars. Look out for salt (sodium) in foods you buy. Compare sodium in foods and choose those with lower numbers. Add spices or herbs to season food without adding salt.
