It is the evening on which we recognise the achievements of our students across a wide range of endeavours. The auditorium was filled with parents, families and friends and students. The Program contained a mix of Awards, musical items and addresses. With the positive feedback from our community about some of the changes to the tenor of the evening, we continued with that structure and tone, again this year. The Dux of 2016, Ms Caitlyn Liu received the William and Elizabeth MacKinley Prize and gave a very interesting presentation; offering some sound advice on effective study habits and remaining focussed during difficult times. EVENTS 2018 Year 7 Orientation Day occurred last week and there is a report in this Newsletter. A big thank-you to all the staff who were involved in this event. We received such positive feedback from the students involved and from parents who experienced the positivity of the students at the end of their first day of Norwood Secondary College. The Orientation Day (and our PreOrientation Day held the week prior for students who may be the only one coming to Norwood coming from primary school) offer incoming students a taste of a secondary school, an opportunity to meet significant staff and (most importantly) meet their new classmates. All went home with a photo of their new class, with the names of their new classmates. We know this will help them come on Day with the confidence that a check of faces and names will give them.ready to reacquaint with their new friends and classmates. NORWOOD FACILITIES Preparation of the site where the Gymnasium will be built continues. The surface of three of the hardcourts within the footprint of the Gym has been removed and compaction of the ground has been underway for the past week. Demolition of several sheds and concrete areas has occurred and the old purple toilet block is the only remaining structure it will be demolished early next year. While there will be a break in work across the Christmas break, it will resume in January with excavation for the footings commencing. All is proceeding smoothly, with little time lost in the recent heavy rain. A MERRY CHRISTMAS AND A HAPPY NEW YEAR The footprint of the gym has now been established and the footing will be dug soon On behalf of the College Council and staff, may I wish all in our College community all the very best for the coming month. May you enjoy some time with those important in your worlds and I look forward to you reconnecting with Norwood in 2018 refreshed and relaxed. Best wishes to our departing Year 12s. We trust that whatever pathways and journeys are ahead, you find yourself well-equipped from your time at our wonderful school. Andrew Sloane, Principal 3

YEAR 8 NEWS CONGRATULATIONS TO BELLA MILLER ON ACHIEVING THE AUSTRALIAN SCOUT MEDALLION The Australian Scout Medallion is the highest award attainable in Scouts and is awarded to a very few of the 47 million Scouts globally. This award is a sum of many awards Bella has achieved in Scouts over years and reflects her initiative in tackling challenge through teamwork and leadership. In order to attain this level of achievement, Bella has participated in an enormous range of challenges, including hikes, camping, training of younger scouts, leadership, and event management. Further to this, Bella has received 10 Proficiently badges, 3 levels of the Patrol Activity badges, 5 Pioneer badges, 4 Explorer badges, and 4 Adventure badges Congratulations Bella! Rebecca Arnold, Head of Year 8 OUTDOOR EDUCATION NEWS YEAR 9 OUTDOOR & RECREATION STUDIES - SURF CAMP 2017 On Monday 4 and Tuesday 5 December, the Surf Camp to Lorne was held for 2 days of surfing and other water activities. Students completed a RUN / SWIM / RUN activity which got everyone used to the water conditions prior to the surfing lesson. Nathan Vabec and Kelly Watt took out the short race but most importantly all participants completed the challenge and performed very well. The students loved the water and enjoyed the waves perfect for beginners. Most students stayed out for a couple of hours with some keen to keep surfing longer. We finished the day with a walk to the Lorne Pier and spotted a couple of Dolphins cruising along the headland, which was a lovely sight. We stayed at the Lorne Surf Life Saving Club which is right on the sand in Lorne. A great location with excellent facilities and activities to keep us all entertained. The next day we were up early with a morning jog (and a swim for some) along the beach before a big breakfast. We hit the surf again, the students again performed very well in good conditions but the waves were small. All students were standing on their boards at some stage and a few picked surfing up very well and excitedly rode some waves all the way into the beach. A number of students surfed tandem together on the stand up paddle board which was a lot of fun! We had another 4

great session and the smiles on all faces told the story. We finished the camp with a lifesaving carnival after lunch with Zoe Tucker and James Hird winning the beach flag event. The last event, a surf relay was a tightly contested event with 4 teams testing out their combined surf skills. There were 8 legs of the relay with a run, a wade, a swim and a board paddle completed multiple times. It came down to the last wave when 3 surfers paddled onto a wave and a sprint for the finish line commenced. All students successfully and competently demonstrated their new skills and were a great group to be involved with. It was a very successful camp that was enjoyed by all. Well done! Rod Mitchell, Head of Year 11 Mark Fuller, Head of Year 12 SCIENCE NEWS SCIENCE VIDEO COMPETITION To celebrate a successful year in Science, our Year 7 students were given the opportunity to find or design a cool science experiment, and then film and edit a video for the year level to watch. The criteria included many of the new skills and ideas learnt this year including use of the scientific method, layout of a scientific report and most importantly - safety! Congratulations to Alexandra Kiernan for taking out first place with her Exploding Lunch Bag experiment, Caitlin Mueck and Jemma Smith for second place with their Cutting a Watermelon with rubber bands experiment, and finally Aaron Filmer and Campbell Whitmore for third place with their Ash Snake experiment. We encourage all students to get involved with all of the extracurricular Science activities in 2018! Alex Papantonas, Science Coordinator MUSIC NEWS YEAR 7 MUSIC EXPO FOR 2018 If you missed the evening, it is certainly not too late to enrol to learn a Musical Instrument next year. Please contact Mrs Joanne Dema at the College for more information. PRESENTATION EVENING All our Music Ensembles rose to the occasion and performed with confidence at the Presentation Evening. As this was our last formal performance for 2017, I would like to thank all our Music students, parents and Friends of Music for a fabulous We all look forward to new musical achievements in All Music lessons and ensembles commence Week 2, the week beginning 5 February,

CHORALE PERFORMING AT EASTLAND Our Norwood Chorale performed Christmas Carols at Eastland last week and enjoyed entertaining shoppers and dancing toddlers. Thanks to all parents and grandparents for supporting the students so warmly. Congratulations also to Darryl Lai (Trombone) and Breda Oakley with Mrs McKelvie (Clarinet duets). MRS ROSIE MCKELVIE RETIRING After 12 years of dedicated service to Norwood Secondary College, Rosemary McKelvie is retiring to take up new adventures on the Mornington Peninsula. It has been an absolute delight working with Mrs McKelvie, as one of our Woodwind teachers. She has attended every music camp and concert and has been an inspirational teacher with her focus on personal improvement on an individual basis. On behalf of all your students, past and present, sincere thanks. Welcome Back Mr Forward We welcome Mr Ian Forward back from 12 Weeks leave, travelling to Finland to continue work on his PhD. He is now fluent in Finnish and can read original texts for his studies. We welcome Mr Forward back to Norwood Secondary College. Iloista joulu Jo Dema, Instrumental Music Coordinator SPORT NEWS T20 YEAR 7/8 GIRLS CRICKET - STATE CHAMPIONS What a fantastic day at the MCG on 30 November! After attending Periods 1 and 2, the 13 strong squad battled the heat as they caught the bus, then the train and walked to the home of cricket. The State Grand Final between Marist-Sion College, Bendigo and Norwood commenced at 3pm after Captains Jaclyn Bevan and Abby Guerin won the toss and decided to bowl. All bowlers performed really well; nearly every ball was pitched up to the stumps, not allowing the Bendigo girls to score freely. A special mention must be given to Charlie Hardy as no runs were scored from her over, the only maiden over in the match! When Bendigo had batted their 8 overs, they had accumulated 72 runs and we had taken 3 wickets (15 bonus runs to be added to our score). Our batters quickly piled on the runs, with Jaclyn, especially, hitting 4s and 6s into the double Zone. All batting pairs, mindful not to lose wickets, played sensible, attacking cricket which resulted in a total of 135 runs off the bat. With our 15 bonus runs our final score was 150, compared to Bendigo's 92 (72 plus 20 bonus for their 4 wickets). 6

We were only allowed to play a maximum of 10 players, all of whom either batted or bowled. The girls were presented on the ground with their premiership medals by Cricket Victoria as Jaclyn read out the names. After the official team photo, we took lots of group photos and soaked up the atmosphere of one of the greatest arenas in the world. It was great to see the support of many parents, grandparents and siblings who cheered on the girls. Thank you to all the supporters for attending and congratulations to all those who represented the College, in the 3 stages of the competition this term. The complete team list of the State Champion Squad is: Congratulations: Jaclyn Bevan Ashleigh Clifford Zoe Colledge Astrid Gardiner Paris Gebel-Lamb Abby Guerin Charlotte Hardy Abbey Harvey Haylee Landi Holly McRae Elise Prunty Alicia Pumpa Madisson Rottinger Emily Thompson Mick Wilson, Cricket Coach and Coordinator 2017 PIERRE DE COUBERTIN AWARD Named after the founder of the modern Olympic Games, Baron Pierre de Coubertin, the award aims to recognise students state-wide, who demonstrate attributes consistent with the fundamental aims of the Olympic movement, with a particular emphasis on participation and commendable sporting behaviour. It is with great pleasure that we announce Ashleigh Allsopp as the Pierre de Coubertin award recipient for Athlete Sportsmanship Honourable Leadership Encouragement Inclusive Go-getter Honesty Ashleigh is a fantastic role model and the ultimate team player. She has exemplified the true Olympic Spirit in many occasions with her sportsmanship, leadership and sporting ability. Ashleigh has always been willing to assist others and at times has even been willing to put herself 7

in positions in order for other students to succeed. A Cricket State Champion, with success in a variety of other sports, Ashleigh has always represented the college with pride, fair play and a commitment to succeed. On Friday June 23 rd Olympic Day, we had the absolute honour of attending the 2017 Pierre de Coubertin awards at the home of the 1956 Olympic Games- the Melbourne Cricket Ground to see Ashleigh be presented with her prestigious award. The awards are a joint initiative of the Victorian Olympic Council and the Department of Education and Training. On the night, we were fortunate enough to listen to Nicole Livingstone (former Olympian) and Catherine Skinner (2016 Rio Gold Medallist) talk about their Olympic experiences. Prior to the ceremony Ashleigh participated in a leadership day where she was able to hold an Olympic Gold medal, that Ashleigh described as very heavy. She describes her experiences of the day below: I was fortunate enough to be involved in the Pierre De Coubertin Awards Day and learn more about the Olympic values, through interacting with Olympians and exploring the Sports Museum. I had my wonderful family and three amazing teachers, Miss Munford, Miss Smith and Mrs Beggs; by my side when I received my award and will be forever grateful for the time, they took out of their day to support me! I hope that other students reach out for opportunities that Norwood will continue to offer and enjoy them just as much as I have! Congratulations Ashleigh! We are very proud of you. The most important thing in the Olympic Games is not to win but to take part. Just as the most important thing in life is not the triumph, but the struggle. - Baron Pierre de Coubertin Tara Munford, Leisa Beggs and Priscilla Smith, Health and P.E.Coordinator UNIFORM SHOP TERM DATES 2018 Start Dates 2018 Students in Years 7,10,11 and 12 commence school on Tuesday 30 January.
