WINTER 2018 OLYMPICS Mikaela Shiffrin hits the slopes in the PyeongChang Winter Olympics taking place Feb Week-Week, WINTER OLYMPICS VIEWER S GUIDE

W ith football firmly in our rearview mirrors, it s now time for more than 2,400 hours of skiing, skating, bobsledding, ice hockey and more as NBC and its broadcast partners carry the 2018 Winter Olympics from PyeongChang, South Airing Feb on NBC, NBC Sports Network, CNBC, USA Network, NBCOlympics.com and the NBC Sports app, these games will see nearly 3,000 athletes from 88 nations (plus Russian athletes) competing in seven sports for 102 medals, among them Lindsey Vonn, Shaun White, David Wise, Elana Meyers-Taylor, Mikaela Shiffrin, Nathan Chen and Chloe Kim. There will be four new events big air snowboarding, freestyle skiing, mass start speed skating and mixed doubles curling and viewers across the nation will get to see prime-time and late-night competition live at the same time thanks to South Korea being 14 hours ahead of New York and 17 ahead of Los Angeles. There s no spoiler alert with a call from your aunt on the East Coast if you live in California, that, Hey, did you see this person or that person win a medal? points out Mike Tirico, who succeeds Bob Costas as NBC s Olympics studio host. They ll see it all as it s happening, it ll be on live across the country in the evening and then a little bit later on late night on the East Coast, which is prime time on the West Coast. So I think that s going to be BY GEORGE DICKIE the major difference in the coverage of these games. There will be a few glaring absences in PyeongChang, probably the most significant being Russia, which was banned because of a doping scandal. Any Russian athletes competing will do so under the aegis Olympic Athlete From Russia or O.A.R, which should make the medal ceremonies interesting. Also missing in men s ice hockey are the players from the NHL, which has opted not to pause its season for the games, thus ending a run of five consecutive Olympics. I think we ll see perhaps a return to that magical 1980 feel, Tirico says, if the U.S. team can become one that makes a run in the tournament, because we ll have a lot of college players involved, which is the real essence of that Miracle on Ice team. So maybe there ll be some new names and some amateurs to root for. As for the athletes themselves, they re locked, loaded, qualified and ready to compete. The 18 days in PyeongChang promise to provide a lifetime of memories for all concerned and probably even a few surprises, as history has taught us. The smart ones learn to expect the unexpected. That s the biggest thing about the Olympics, says Meyers-Taylor, a U.S. bobsledder and two-time medalist, is you never know what s going to happen so you have to be prepared for all kinds of possibilities. In the NBC Broadcast booth, Mike Tirico takes over for Bob Costas as the network s primetime Olympics host. Is it bobsleigh or bobsled? Olympic terminology refers to an event as bobsleigh while in North American English it is bobsled. You can call it what you want, but bobsleigh is starting to be used more often. Along with live coverage and no tape-delay on NBC, NBCSN, CNBC, and the USA Network, expect an upward trend of streaming via NBCOlympics.com to continue for the PyeongChang games. Yes, there s an app for that!...and, what s not Russia was banned from participation in the PyeongChang winter games for past doping violations. Well, sort of. Certain athletes from Russia can compete in PyeongChang, but they must do so under the Olympic Athletes from Russia banner. Their flag will not be flown, their anthem will not be played and Russian government officials are banned from the games. The Men s Ice Hockey tournament will surely be different because the NHL is not allowing its players to compete. With dozens of players from Russia s KHL expected to participate, ironically the gold medal favorite will be the Olympic Athletes from Russia. The world tensions involving North Korea are being blamed for sluggish ticket sales to Olympic events. That said, South Korean president Moon Jae-in is keeping the door open for North Korean leader Kim Jong Un to send athletes to PyeongChang, which is just 80 km (50 miles) from the North Korean border. pg WINTER OLYMPICS VIEWER S GUIDE

ICEHOCKEY The headline-making story for Olympic Hockey at the PyeongChang Olympics is the fact that the NHL will not send players to these games. This is the result of number of issues, primarily the failure of the IOC and NHL to agree on a number of items. Thus, the men s hockey team, headed by Wisconsin Badgers hockey coach Tony Granato, consists of former NHL journeymen, college players as well as players active in European leagues, including, at the moment, Russia s KHL Team USA veteran Brian Gionta will serve as Team USA captain. Without the NHL players, the men s hockey tournament sure will prove interesting. Although Russia is banned from the Olympics, certain athletes will be allowed to play. With the KHL featuring a number of top Russian players, and apparently not standing in the way, this makes the Olympic Athletes from Russia, as they are being called, the likely favorite. The women s hockey tournament is sure to be exciting with the Team USA / Team Canada rivalry as intense as ever. The Canadians, who have won the last four gold medals, beating the U.S. for three of them, defeated the Americans again 3-1 in a pre-olympic tune-up back in December. Two-time silver medalist Hilary Knight leads Team USA. Dates: Feb PROFILED Tony Granato Brian Gionta Team USA men s hockey coach Tony Granato has a long career on the ice and behind the bench. A stand-out left winger in college for the Wisconsin Badgers, Granato had already been drafted in 1982 by the New York Rangers. After one minor league season in the IHL he was in New York where he led the team in scoring, but was traded in his second season to the Los Angeles Kings. Granato spent 14 seasons in the NHL, including his final five years with the San Jose Sharks before taking on a number of coaching jobs, including nearly three years as head coach of the Colorado Avalanche where he posted a record. Granato is currently in his second season coaching for his college alma-mater, the University of Wisconsin Madison (Badgers) while also handling Team USA. 4 Justine Dufour- Lapointe Mikaela Shiffrin Alpine skiing and its various disciplines - slalom, giant slalom, super giant slalom (Super G), combined, and downhill - remains one of the more popular winter Olympic sports. Since its debut in 1936 the number of events for both men and women has continued to grow. Alpine skiing has seen it s finest competitors come from European countries as well as the U.S. Austria holds the record with 114 medals, including 9 at Sochi in The U.S. Team is pinning some of its hopes on Mikaela Shiffrin, who when just 18 became the youngest slalom champion in Olympic history at Sochi; an honor she holds as World champion as well. Lyndsey Vonn is set to return after missing Sochi in Meanwhile, six-time Olympic medalist Bode Miller will return to the Olympics, but this time he ll be an analyst for NBC. Dates: Feb , 17-18, Take downhill skiing and add some acrobatics to it and you ve got Freestyle Skiing. Disciplines include aerials, moguls, cross, slopestyle and halfpipe. All are fairly new Olympic events, with halfpipe and slopestyle being introduced in No doubt, the popularity of the X Games has contributed to the surge in popularity in these PROFILED pg WINTER OLYMPICS VIEWER S GUIDE sports made up of young, daring athletes. For the U.S. Team, David Wise hopes to return to defend his 2014 gold medal in the men s halfpipe. An interesting storyline that could develop in PyeongChang is the competition between Canada s Dufour-Lapointe sisters (Maxime, Chloe and Justine) who all compete in the moguls. Justine, the youngest at age 24, took home a gold medal at Sochi while Chloe grabbed the silver medal. Team Canada sure would love to see the sisters sweep the podium. Dates: Feb. 9, 11-12, Mikaela Shiffrin Mikaela Shiffrin is the youngest slalom champion in Olympic alpine history; a feat she accomplished when she won a gold medal at the Sochi Olympics in 2014 Now four years older and with several competitions under her belt, Shiffrin is poised to be among the top competitors on the mountain in PyeongChang. She comes into these Olympics at the top of the World Cup and World Ski Championships, having won both titles in Her strong run is the Slalom but she did earn a silver medal in the Giant Slalom to go with her Gold at the FIS Alpine World Ski Championships in St. Moritz, Switzerland. Although she s only 22, she has seven years experience on the U.S. Ski Team. Full Name: Mikaela Pauline Shiffrin Born: March 13, 1995 Hometown: Vail, Colorado Sport: Alpine Skiing Disciplines: Slalom, Giant Slalom, Super G, Combined, Downhill Achievements: Olympic gold medal, Slalom, 2014; World Championship gold medal, Slalom, 2013, 2015, 2017; World Cup Champion, 2017

Ole Einar Bjørndalen Jessica Diggins Bryan Fletcher BIATHLON: Perhaps the most historic Winter Olympic sport is the Biathlon, which is a combination of cross-country ski racing and rifle shooting. The challenge facing a bi-athlete is being able to shoot accurately after an enduring ski workout. The U.S. continues to improve in Biathlon but this sport belongs to the European countries like Sweden, Norway, France, Germany and Finland. Norway s Ole Einar Bjørndalen has won more medals than any Winter Olympian, period. Dates: Feb , 14-15, 17-18, 20, NORDIC COMBINED: Another Olympic sport that s been featured in every Winter Olympic games is Nordic Combined. The sport is exactly what its name implies and that is a combination of cross-county, or Nordic skiing, and ski jumping. Norway has dominated this sports since the early days including sweeping the medals in the first four Winter Olympics, and continue to have success. At Sochi in 2014 Germany s Eric Frenzel won gold. For Team USA, Bryan Fletcher s heartwarming story of going from childhood cancer survivor to Olympian is one for the ages. This will be his second trip to the Olympics as Fletcher was also in Sochi in Dates: Feb. 14, 20, 22 CROSS COUNTRY: An original Winter Olympics sport, Cross-Country Skiing has been part of the Games since their inception in 1924 at Chamonix, France. Women s events began in At Sochi in 2014 the Scandinavian countries - Norway, Sweden and Finland - cleaned up with Norway winning 11 medals, including five gold medals. The U.S. Women s team could pull a few surprises. Jessie Diggins won a silver medal and Kikkan Randall won bronze at the 2017 Nordic World Ski Championships in Lahti, Finland; a first for Team USA. Dates: Feb , 13, 15-18, 21, PROFILED OLE EINAR BJØRNDALEN There is not another Olympian at PyeongChang who will be as decorated as Norway s Ole Einar Bjørndalen. Known as The King of Biathlon, Bjørndalen will be 44-yearsold by the time he straps on his skis and throws a gun over his shoulder to compete in the Olympic Biathlon events. Bjørndalen has 13 Olympic medals, including eight gold. Among them are four he won in 2002 at Salt Lake City when he won gold medals in all four disciplines (Individual, Sprint, Pursuit and Relay) that were contested at that time. He sort-of retired after winning gold in Pursuit at Sochi in 2014, being elected to a position with the IOC. But he resigned to begin training for what will be his sixth trip to the Winter Olympic Games where no one will be surprised if he helps Norway continue their Biathlon success, and makes yet another trip to the podium. Full Name: Ole Einar Bjørndalen Born: January 27, 1974 Hometown: Drammen, Norway Sport: Biathlon / Cross Country Skiing Achievements: 8 Olympic gold medals; 20 World Cup gold medals; 6 World Cup titles 2018 WINTER OLYMPICS VIEWER S GUIDE pg 5

Perhaps the most daring of Winter Olympic sports, and one that has been contested at every Winter Olympic games, is Ski Jumping. The Europeans traditionally dominate these events, especially the men s events. A women s event was added at Sochi in 2014 with Germany s Carina Vogt being the first to win a gold medal. She ll have some competition from Japan s Sara Takanashi and perhaps even Sarah Hendrickson of Team USA. The U.S. has only medaled once in Ski Jumping, while Norway leads all nations with 30 medals overall. Dates: Feb. 8, 10, 12, 16-17, 19 Carina Vogt After a more than 50 year hiatus, curling returned as an Olympic sport in 1998 and has been growing in popularity ever since. In fact, for PyeongChang, mixed doubles will be added as an event to the men s and women s tournaments. Canada has thrived in the Olympic curling competition with both the men s and women s teams medaling at every Winter Olympics since the sport returned gold medalist Ben Hebert returns for Team Canada. Dates: Feb PROFILED Ben Hebert Yuzuru Hanyu Yuzuru Hanyu Figure Skating is the oldest Winter Olympic sport, which was actually contested in the Summer Olympics beginning in Singles competition for both men and Ben Hebert women and pairs are the traditional disciplines, with ice dancing added in Elegance, athleticism, beauty and grace along with a competitive spirit define this sport s best competitors. In 2014 the Russians did well in their home country, but some will be sitting out these Olympics. One big question is if Japan s Yuzuru Hanyu can top his record setting ways in the men s singles in Sochi in Dates: Feb. 9, 11-12, 14-17, 19-21, 23, 25 pg WINTER OLYMPICS VIEWER S GUIDE Japanese figure skater Yuzuru Hanyu, who the New York Times recently called Micheal Jackson on ice, appeared to be more than capable of being the first men s figure skater to repeat as a gold medalist since Dick Button in Then tragedy struck. Hanyu was injured in early November when he suffered a ligament tear in his right ankle while practicing. Suddenly, Japan s dreams for one of their most popular athletes, and their first men s skater to win a gold medal, were questionable for the 2018 Winter Olympics. But Hanyu has pressed on and despite the fact that he withdrew from the 2017 Japanese National Championships, he was named to Japan s Olympic team in December and is poised to compete in PyeongChang. The question is how healthy he ll be and how much the time away from practice affects his performance. Full Name: Hanyu Yuzuru Born: December 7, 1994 Hometown: Sendai, Miyagi, Japan Sport: Figure Skating Achievements: Olympic gold medal, Singles, 2014; World Championship gold medal, Singles, 2014, 2017

Kaillie Humphries Perhaps the true modern icon of the Winter Olympics is the bobsled, or bobsleigh, which is one of the most popular Olympic sports and one of the final medals awarded in the four-man event where sledders reach speeds of 85 mph. Germany, Switzerland and the U.S. own the most medals in this sport but the spotlight in these games could shift to Canada and Kaillie Humphries who seeks a three-peat in the women s event, which could also see a team from Nigeria compete. Dates: Feb , LUGE Chris Mazdzer What is called the fastest sport on ice, luge involves laying on your back on a sled that can go 90 mph. Germany swept the gold medals in all four events at Sochi in Team USA has it hopes pinned high on a pair of northeastern racers in the men s singles event in the form of Chris Mazdzer and Tucker West, as well as Erin Hamlin of the women s team. West may have the most interesting story of any Olympian in that he grew up practicing luge on a 700-foot, backyard track his father built for him with lights and a PA system. Dates: Feb SKELETON Matthew Antoine PROFILED No brakes, head first and on their bellies, Skeleton athletes are a daring bunch in a sport that reminds one of riding a rail sled as a kid. Skeleton was part of the first Olympics in 1924 and would not be contested again until It would endure another long drought until it resurfaced in Salt Lake City in For the men s team, 2014 bronze medalist Matthew Antoine returns while the women s team includes Katie Uhlaender, who finished fourth at Sochi, behind Russian Elena Nikitina who has been cited for doping. Dates: Feb Kaillie Humphries When Canada s Kaillie Humphries won a gold medal in the two-women bobsleigh event at the Sochi Olympics in 2014, she became the first female bobsledder to defend an Olympic title. Now she s going for a three-peat as she heads to PyeongChang. As a women s bobsledder, Humphries has accomplished a lot. Not only has she won her share of competitions and medals but she s helped take her sport into new territory. Four-person (mixed-gender) bobsledding where men and women compete with and against each other, is catching on outside the Olympics, thanks, in part to Humphries participation in such events. One can only wonder how long it will be before these are included in what is certainly one of most popular Winter Olympics sports. For now, Humphries will try to pilot her way to triple-gold. Full Name: Kaillie Humphries Born: September 4, 1985 Hometown: Sendai, Calgary, Alberta Sport: Bobsleigh Achievements: Olympic gold medal, 2010, 2014; World Championship Gold 2012, WINTER OLYMPICS VIEWER S GUIDE pg 7

John-Henry Krueger Hosting country South Korea has the most medals (42) in Short Track racing since it s inception in 1998, while the Americans are looking for the next Apolo Anton Ohno Olympic hopeful John-Henry Krueger gets another chance for Olympic glory after missing Sochi due to having the swine flu. Team USA has been strong in this competitive sport where athletes race against each other rather than the clock. But it s been the Koreans who have surged in recent Olympic Games and will be on their home ice. Dates: Feb. 10, 13, 17, 20, 22 Ireen Wust Speed skating will be a very busy sport at the PyeongChang Olympics with 15 total events. Men s Speed Skating was part of the first Winter Olympics in 1924 with women s events being added at Lake Placid in The Dutch have always been dominant in Speed Skating with 105 total medals, including 23 (8 gold medals) at Sochi in Sven Kramer and Ireen Wuest return to represent the Netherlands. Kramer is going for a third gold medal in the 5,000-meter and seeking his first in the 10,000. Wuest will compete in the women s 1,500 and 3,000 on the big oval. Dates: Feb , 18-19, 21, Since making it s Olympic debut at the 1998 Nagano Games in Japan, Snowboarding is not just a popular Olympic sport, but an influential one; considering that halfpipe is now also part of Freestyle Skiing. The sport also made Shaun White a household name and an Olympic legend. Australia s Scotty James is the man to beat in men s halfpipe. For the women s team, 17-yearold Chloe Kim of the U.S. gives her country high hopes in the halfpipe as she makes her Olympics debut. Dates: Feb , 19, Scotty James PROFILED Scotty James pg WINTER OLYMPICS VIEWER S GUIDE Look out PyeongChang, and move over Shaun White because here comes Scotty James. The young Australian snowboarder has been tearing up the halfpipe in the X Games and is expected to be one of the top competitors for Olympic gold. This will be James third trip to the Olympics. He went to Vancouver in 2010 at age 15, and again to Sochi in 2014, but did not contend for a medal. Now James is dominating the X Games and consistently improving in international competition. He finished 2017 ranked No. 1 in men s halfpipe in both the World Snowboard Tour and World Cup standings The Australians are hoping that James, who spends much of his time in the U.S., can bring them gold after awarding him the Australian Institute Male Athlete of the Year Award in Full Name: Scott James Born: July 6,1994 Hometown: Warrandyte, Victoria, Australia Sport: Snowboarding Discipline: Halfpipe Achievements: X Games halfpipe gold medalist, 2017; Burton U.S. Open halfpipe silver medalist, 2017; Snowboarding World Championships gold medal, 2015, 2017.

BY DAN LADD When the XIII Winter Olympic Games were held in Lake Placid, New York in 1980, the concept of allowing NHL players to participate in the Olympics was in its infancy. Still, the Russian, or Soviet Union, team was considered the best with years of international play under their belts. Other than 1960, when they were upset by the United States, the Soviet Union had won the gold medal in men s hockey at five of the previous six Winter Olympics dating back to 1956, and were the favorites again in Lake Placid. Herb Brooks, who for the third time had just led the University of Minnesota Golden Gophers to a National Championship, was chosen to coach the U.S. team. He selected what would be the youngest national team ever to compete in the Olympics and set out to have them in peak physical condition for the Olympic hockey tournament. The result was a young, physical team that came through the preliminary rounds of the tournament unscathed and set the stage for a medal round matchup with the Russians. pg WINTER OLYMPICS VIEWER S GUIDE The game was tied 2-2 after the first period, and the Soviets led 3-2 after the second. Two goals in the third period, including team captain Mike Eruzione s shot with ten minutes remaining, put Team USA ahead for good. As the final seconds ticked off the clock, ABC sportscaster Al Michaels uttered the now-famous phrase, Do you believe in miracles? YES! A 4-2 win over Finland a few days later secured the gold medal for the U.S. Brooks became a national hero, as did Eruzione and goalie Jim Craig. Several players from both teams went on to have NHL careers. The game came to be known as the Miracle on Ice and was the subject of a 2004 movie called Miracle, which featured Kurt Russell playing the part of Brooks. Stunned by the loss, the Soviets refused to have their names inscribed on their silver medals. They went on to win gold medals at the 1984 and 1988 Olympics. In 2015, ESPN produced a documentary about the 1980 Soviet hockey team called Of Miracles and Men, as part of their 30 for 30 series.

Paralympics showcase the hero/athlete BY DAN LADD When the Olympic torch goes out in PyeongChang on Feb. 25, it will not be the end of Olympic competition. Beginning on March 9 - exactly one month from the opening ceremonies of the XXIII Winter Olympics - the XII Winter Paralympic Games will get under way and run through March 18. Over 600 of athletes from an estimated 80 countries are expected to attend, a trend that continues upward. The roots or the Paralympics date back to the post-world War II era when disabled veterans sought to compete in athletics. In 1976 the first official Winter Paralympics were held in Sweden where amputees and visually impaired athletes represented their countries in both alpine and cross-country skiing. The Paralympics has since expanded and in PyeongChang will feature 80 events in six sports: Alpine skiing - biathlon, cross-country skiing, ice sledge hockey, snowboarding and wheelchair curling. The Paralympics are now traditionally held following both the Summer and Winter Olympic games and in the same host city.
