The mission of Biathlon Alberta is to promote, develop, and administer biathlon to the highest standard of excellence. Biathlon Alberta was incorporated in The Association currently has 12 member clubs, approximately 400 individual members, and two full time staff. Biathlon Alberta sanctions and supports over one dozen winter and summer biathlon events annually, at a variety of biathlon facilities. Alberta athletes, meanwhile, dominate national competitions and represent a significant portion of the Canadian National Team. We hope you find the materials included in this report informative and useful. Andy Holmwood Executive Director, Biathlon Alberta andy@biathlon.ca Canmore office Calgary office Page 1

2012 ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING REPORTS President s Report Ken Davies We have three primary objectives at Biathlon Alberta. 1. Grow membership 2. Develop athletes 3. Develop coaches and officials We set a goal five years ago to double membership by While we have grown roughly 40% in that time, we are nowhere near our goal. We need to redouble our efforts to attract young athletes and their families into the sport. In the past, we have relied heavily on Alberta Biathlon Club to market biathlon to athletes around Alberta. It appears that we need to look to how we can work with ABC to achieve our targets. Alberta continues to be the hotbed for biathlon in Canada with the majority of the national team members hailing from our Province, a dominant performance by 40 athletes sent to the National Championships and several category winners in the NorAm series. Our Calforex races continue to be the best race program in the country for athletes at all levels. The Biathlon Alberta Training Centre is in its second successful year of operation with 13 athletes from across Canada. We also purchased a dozen new air rifles to loan out to our clubs for their development programs. Alberta continues to raise the profile of our sport in Canada through event hosting which serves to continue to develop our large group of qualified officials. In February, we hosted the first ever IBU Cups to be held outside Europe. Be any measure these events were an outstanding success and the IBU has stated that it wants to return to Canmore for future events. Richard Boruta has included in his mandate to help develop coaches around the Province. The first formal coaching development weekend was held in Edmonton in June. Biathlon Alberta has the supporting objective to our three primary goals to be administered efficiently. Our budgets and cash management always aim to be at a breakeven level. The Board works hard to ensure that we continue to be sound fiscal stewards and our financial position remains strong. This success would not be possible without the efforts of Andy Holmwood, the Executive Director and Richard Boruta, the Training Centre Head Coach. I would like to thank the Board again for their volunteer efforts to keep Biathlon Alberta running. Also I would like to recognize outgoing Board members Noel Charchuk, Mark Gow and Rick Watson for their sage council and patience. Page 4

Vice President Technical Karin Kaarsoo As usual, the last year was a busy one for Biathlon Alberta From a provincial competition point of view, it was a packed season with one NORAM in Canmore, Western Championships in Hinton and Alberta Championships in Camrose. Alberta Winter Games were held in Edmonton. Alberta was well represented at World Youth Junior Championships in Kontiolahti, Finland with 9 of 16 selected athletes and plenty of impressive results, including the first World Championship gold for a Canadian. Kurtis Wenzel came first in the Junior Men s Individual. Once again, Alberta was well represented on the National Team and 6 Alberta biathletes were named to the team for the upcoming season. Mark Arendz had another stellar year on the Para Nordic World Cup Circuit finishing second overall. At the National Championships in Val Cartier, Quebec Team Alberta won more than half of the available medals once again with 8 biathletes medalling in three events. Three Alberta athletes, Danielle Vrielink, Stuart Harden and Aidan Millar competed in the 2012 Youth Olympic Winter Games team in Innsbruck in January. Between them, they had 4 top 10 finishes including the mixed relay. Biathlon in Paradise is the title of the Biathlon World magazine article on the IBU Cups 6 & 7 which were held in Canmore in February. It was the first time that the IBU tour left Europe. Thanks to wonderful weather and dedicated volunteers and organizing committee members the week was a resounding success capped with Nathan Smith winning gold in all three sprints. These successes are supported by the strong coaching and volunteers that we have in Alberta today. Thank you to all of you. The biathletes greatly appreciate your efforts. The Biathlon Alberta Training Centre has entered its second year with Richard Boruta continuing as Head Coach and is looking forward to another successful year. This summer Richard ran coaching clinic in Canmore & Edmonton as well as a week long biathlon boot camp for Senior Boys and Girls. This season is off to a good start with the North American Summer Roller Biathlon Championships currently underway in Canmore. Page 5

Treasurer Sherry Thompson The financial statements at April 30, 2012, were prepared from information provided to me by Biathlon Alberta. Two members of Biathlon Alberta, Deb Hall and Nancy Andrews of Foothills Nordic Ski Club, reviewed these statements on behalf of the membership. On behalf of the Board I would like to extend a sincere thank you to them for the due diligence and time they have devoted to this task. Financially, this was an active and successful year for Biathlon Alberta. Revenues increased significantly over last year, but most of the increase can be attributed to Athlete Fees for the new Biathlon Alberta Training Centre (BATC). Government funding remained stable. Grants for Canada Winter Games was reduced to zero as the four year cycle of funding began anew after the very successful 2011 Games. However grants for the purchase of 14 new Air rifles (CIP Grant) and timing equipment (DIP Grant) as well as $12,077 received from the Community Spirit program, brought the level roughly equal with last year. Aside from the BATC fees, non government funding showed increases in competition fees, and sponsorship which were offset by lower revenues from training camps and membership revenues. We also realized a Capital Gain on the sale of assets from the RBC Dominion Investment Account to provide matching funds for the purchase of the Air Rifles. As competition revenues increased so did the related competition expenses. There were also increases for Officials and Coaching courses held last year, and in Administration expenses, mostly for necessary changes to our on line registration system. Changes to the membership application process have affected the costs and revenues in that area. HP Coaching expenses were up due to the transition phase to the BATC. Depreciation expenses were down as many of our assets become fully depreciated in the past year. Costs for sending Team Alberta to Nationals was down this year, with the location of the competition being the biggest variable. Looking at the Statement of Financial Position, assets were up $63k over last year with the increases attributed to the balance of Gaming funds ($34,864) and the addition of the new Air Rifles ($40,897) to the Fixed Asset file. The Air Rifles will be on loan to various clubs in Alberta to assist them in the growth of their entry level programs. The investment account at RBC Dominion Securities showed a decrease of $9,533 representing the change in the value of the account after the draw down of $20,000 in October This money provided the matching funds for the CIP grant received to purchase the new Air Rifles. I invite you to also read the Notes to the Financial Statements that provide additional information regarding significant accounting policies and other items on the financial statements. In closing, I would like to thank our Executive Director, Andy Holmwood for maintaining the accounting records throughout the year and his assistance in the preparation of the financial statements. 8 VP Administration Micki Chong The Learning curve of what and who does what to make a strong Biathlon community in Alberta continues to amaze me. I am a regular attendee on Biathlon Alberta monthly Board meetings (phone in) and in Timing as volunteer at most Calforex and AWG. My amazement continues with the precision of the Race Officials in executing each and every event and the efficient confident manner in which Andy handles his position as a Point of contact for us all. Action items for my past two year term: Support staff in review of hours submitted to Biathlon Alberta ( 2010/2012) Unfortunate term end of Alan Ball and creation of a High Performance coach at Regional Training Center (2011) Annual review with Andy: bringing suggestions to board and support of all initiatives Chair board meeting in President s absence or delay Support of transparent budget adherence Tasked with helping to select award nominees for Support Biathlon Alberta at WinSport casino (2012) Women s Sprint podium, IBU Cup #7, Canmore Page 7

Executive Director Andy Holmwood Subsequent to our last Annual General Meeting, there have been many accomplishments both on and off the field of play that have been enabled and supported by the governance structure our association. The members of the Board of Directors have accomplished much in providing guidance and support to the association s programs and activities. An area of particular strength which warrants highlighting is stakeholder relations. Our association has been remarkably successful accessing government funding through a number of programs, in addition to maintaining a strong relationship with our key sponsor, Calforex Currency Exchange. Outcomes of this government funding include the purchase of 14 Steyr Air Rifles for the use of member clubs, in addition to funds secured to facilitate foreign coach visitation, timing equipment purchases, provincial team support, and event hosting support. The development of biathlon in Alberta continues to evolve in a positive fashion: Our provincial race series is the pre eminent North American series; participation at the Alberta Winter Games increased over 2010 and included athletes from all eight provincial zones, successful international IBU Cup events returned to Canmore, and our association was well represented at the Arctic Winter Games. The performance of our athletes, supported by a very strong network of coaches, continues to lead the country. Much of this positive development can be attributed to strong and successful club programs, in addition to the establishment of the Biathlon Alberta Training Centre. This growth and development is also demonstrated by the recent establishment of a new club in the Bow Corridor. Meanwhile, our association continues to benefit from the sport promotion and recruitment efforts of Alberta Biathlon Club; a member club established solely for such endeavours makes us the envy of many provincial sport associations. A significant challenge the association is facing at present is budgeting and fiscal management: Our base government funding, reduced three years ago, has not seen an increase, while other provincial funding is typically encumbered to a significant extent we have to spend money to receive money, and such funds are very much tied to specific programming. Meanwhile, our burden to Biathlon Canada renders membership revenue non existent. While our association benefits from lean budgeting and tight control of spending, revenue generation will be a major concern in future. Finally, thanks to the Board of Biathlon Alberta for providing a supportive, flexible, and enjoyable work environment. The energy and passion for biathlon expressed by this group is inspiring and appreciated. Page 8
