4 JUDO TEACHES US TO LOOK FOR THE BEST POSSIBLE COURSE OF ACTION, WHATEVER THE INDIVIDUAL CIRCUMSTANCES JIGORO KANO 4
5 THE SPORT Judo (meaning gentle way ) is the most widely practiced combat sport and is the second most popular sport in the world. Its most prominent feature is its competitive element, where the objective is to either throw or take down an opponent to the ground, immobilize or otherwise subdue an opponent with a pin, or force an opponent to submit with a joint lock or a choke. It may seem violent, but The American College of Sports Medicine announced Judo as the safest contact sport for children. There are basically four ways to win in Judo: by throwing, pinning, or subduing an opponent in an arm bar or choke. A player earns an ippon (a full point equivalent to a knockout in boxing) for a perfect throw landing an opponent solidly on the back; for a pin of 20 seconds; or for a submission by arm bar or choke. A wazari is a half point and two wazari add up to an ippon to end a match. A yuko is a lesser point. 5
