8 2.0 ABOUT THE BAHAMAS ASSOCIATION OF ATHLETICS ASSOCIATION On May 6th, 2017, The Bahamas Association of Athletics Association celebrated 65 years of a lustrous and fruitful history of track and field on the world stage. This history started with a determined ambition by The Bahamas to participate in the 1952 Olympic Games in Helsinki, Finland. To form an Olympic Committee, it was necessary to have several national associations who were associated with their international bodies. Athletics was one of those bodies but at that time the body had to be amateur. The Bahamas Athletic Association was not and on May 6th, 1952 an amateur body associated with the International Amateur Athletic Association was formed. The first team to represent the country internationally participated in the 1954 Empire Games (Commonwealth Games) in Vancouver, Canada. In the 1958 Empire Games of Cardiff, Wales; our lone competitor, Mr. Thomas Augustus Robinson illustrious international track career began with stunning performances, by capturing a Gold medal in the 220yds and a silver medal in the 100yds. His career ended in 1968 at the Tokyo Olympic Games where he qualified for the 100m finals but had to settle for 8th place due to a hamstring injury. A true pioneer of his time, the National track and field stadium has been named in his honor. Following these accomplishments, Bahamian athletes continue to excel and display their talents in international competitions at both the junior and senior levels. In 1973, The Bahamas was permitted to compete in the 2nd CARIFTA Games in Trinidad, we won one medal. Since this initial appearance The Bahamas has participated in subsequent Games and served as host in 1976, 1978, 1981, 1984, 1992, 2002 and 2013 winning the Games of 1980, 1981, 1983 and CARIFTA is the stage where many Bahamian Olympic and World Champions began their athletic careers including Tonique Williams, Shaunae Miller, Debbie Ferguson-Mckenzie, Pauline Davis Thompson, Savatheda Fynes, Eldece Clarke, Chandra Sturrup, Chris Brown, Demetrius Pinder, Ramon Miller, Avard Moncur, Michael Matthieu and Troy Kemp. It is with a great sense of pride that we accept the challenge to host the 47th edition of the Games. As we invite the region to our country, we hope that this event will allow our athletes to aspire to FASTER, FURTHER, HIGHER heights in the spirit of camaraderie and competition. 8
