6 Preparations Team PEI 2009 Working Toward Best Ever Results for will be the 22 nd set of Games for PEI athletes. 320 athletes, coaches and managers will make up PEI s largest contingent ever. Preparation and the selection of athletes for 23 teams has been underway for the past three years in most sports. A number of the teams have been involved in test events hosted by the province leading up to the 2009 Games. Each team has also participated in direct competition with other provinces during the year. A few of the teams have selected their rosters for next year but most are still evaluating their athletes. Most teams will not be finalized until spring. Expectations are high in some sports for a medal or a top five finish. The young athletes will continue to train and practice throughout the fall and winter months. High Performance Committee Responsible for partnering and supporting our 2009 teams with their preparations in conjuction with the Provincial Canada Games Committee Inc. Best Ever Program Managed by the High Performance Committee and funded by the provincial government. Provides annual base funding to support all teams participating at the 2009 Games. Several teams, or individual athletes, are presently accessing excellence support based on their performance results; including a number of male and female wrestlers, as well as our male and female soccer teams. Coaches apply to HPC for an athlete, or team, to be considered for excellence by providing recent performance result information. For example, a team or individual which produced outstanding results at an Atlantic, National, or other competition prior to the Games would be considered. Physiological Sport Specific Testing Program Canada Games Alumni Dave Eli MacEachern with his 1998 Olympic gold medal, Lauren Hurry, Hon. Carolyn Bertram and Matt Caseley. Lauren and Matt are members of the 2009 athletics training team Funding for this pilot program provided by the Best Ever Program. Piloted by the High Performance Committee (HPC ) and Provincial Canada Games Committee Inc. (PCGC Inc.), in partnership with Holland College Sport and Leisure Management program. Goal to enhance overall individual and team performances, improve team standings and personal bests and to support coaches in their efforts to prepare their teams. Evaluation will highlight athletes strengths and weaknesses, and enable professional trainers to design programs specific to the athletes needs. Most PEI Canada Games teams have already gone through the first phase of testing. Every athlete has the opportunity to take part in the testing program.
