6 Unit 7 Sports Your teacher gave you this editorial review about the 2010 Winter Olympics. Read the review and answer the questions. Choose the best answer for each question and blacken the circle. The 2010 Winter Olympics 5 On 2 July 2003, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) awarded the right to host the 2010 Winter Olympics to Vancouver, Canada. Vancouver defeated the other two finalists PyeongChang, South Korea and Salzburg, Austria who shared very close application conditions. The victory allowed Canada to host its second Winter Olympics after Calgary in Vancouver, as a seaport with low altitude, was considered the best location to hold the event Controlling the budget and completing the facilities on schedule had always been issues of concern for many hosting countries in the past. Canada learned the lesson and had done a much better job. The operational cost of the 17-day 2010 Winter Olympics was estimated to be $1.76 billion in mid-2009, all raised from non-governmemt sources. The Olympic Villages in Whistler and Vancouver were complete along with every sports venue for the 2010 games one year prior to the Games. The main media centre in Coal Harbour and its Whistler counterpart can provide the most advanced and professional communication equipment, including high speed Internet access to the audiences and the reporters. 20 With the experience from the last Winter Olympic Games and full force of involvement from all parties, Vancouver should be able to organize a Winter Olympic Games that is more successful than ever. 109
