1 Boles Notes- April 2013 A good plan is like a road map: it shows the final destination and usually marks the best way to get there H. Stanley Judd. The City of Brantford and the Brantford Aquatic Club are ready to welcome Ontario swimming this July for the Summer LC Provincial Championships. After a forty plus million dollar make over at the Wayne Gretzky Centre, swimmers, parents and coaches will be welcomed by an open concept lobby with a view straight into the new 25m 8 lane multi use pool along with 4 ice pads, an indoor track, community fitness centre and a dedicated sport Dry land room. Swim Ontario staff were invited by Suzanne Paulins, 2013 Provincial Championship Meet Director and Gretzky staff Sandy Jackson and Marlene Charters for a site visitation. Coaches and swimmers will be pleased with access to the new warm up facility, an improved air and water system installed in the 50m pool so we look forward to fast swimming this summer. A new face lift for the Gretzky Centre in Brantford in time for the 2013 Summer LC Provincial Championships. Ontario Sport Awards: Congratulations to Summer Mortimer and her coach Reg Chappell for being recognized as Ontario Para Swimmer of the Year and Para Coach of the Year respectfully. Suzanne Paulins received the Syl Apps Volunteer of the Year for Ontario. See the full list of winners go to

After weeks of evaluation and feedback, there will be one Summer Festival, albeit with several modifications in place. Look for the summary of changes on the Swim Ontario Website. A few weeks ago I was fortunate to attend a Talent Identification Symposium Talent Decoded hosted by the Canadian Sport Institute Ontario and the Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Sport in Markham. There were several very good speakers. Here is my summary with some key performance messages. Sean Scott, Own the Podium: what is very evident from the London Olympic Quadrennial is that despite three years of funding increases, we did not achieve any significant improvement over Beijing in medals won Olympic Games Canadian Top 8 Canadian Top 5 Canadian Top Mediocrity the greater danger for most of us lies not in setting our aim to high and falling short; but in setting our aim too low and achieving our mark Michael Angelo OTP s vision is to identify and develop athletes with the qualities required to be Olympic and Paralympic Champions. Talent Identification is the identification of new athletes based on measurable sport specific parameters. Talent Development is the development of talented athletes within enhanced environments Talent Transfer is the transfer of talented athletes from one sport to another, based n significant attributes gained from their previous sporting background. Enhanced Daily Training Environment is a customized high performance approach for identified athletes and teams to achieve podium success. Guiding Principles: Olympic & Paralympic Champion Focused Nationally Led Coach Driven Sport Sciences & Sports Medicine Supported Sport Specific Deliberate Programming Performance Based Repeatable Excellence.

4 OTP Approach: the medal potential is each sport is the key consideration in the review process we will use a top down approach to target and prioritize our funding to achieve podium performance goals. we will make decisions based on evidence but will take calculated risks to support athletes, coaches and sports. OTP will be interventionists when required. NSO Ranking: Category 1 Program Model (Multi Medal sports) Category 2 Program Model (History of medal success & Effective HP Programs) Category 3 Targeted Events (Strategic Investment (mid quad review) Individual Athlete Support Organizational Readiness Investment Priorities: 2016 Targeted Podium Potential (athletes/teams) TOP 5/Top 8 World Rank 2020 Targeted Athletes/Teams (athletes demonstrating Medal Potential for 2020 Gold Medal Profile: Outline of the high performance progression required by an individual to become a medallist with underpinning critical performance components required for progression clearly identified and defined. Why have Gold Medal Profiles? They objectify the performance tracking of athletes They align program structures and support They clarify expectations to all stakeholders They can identify gaps- program and individual level They can help identify and accelerate potential So what do Gold Medal Profiles comprise of: Tracking an individual/teams performance progression against the event specific funnel Identifying the critical performance components which underpin success in an event/discipline/sport Performance components are technical, tactical, physiological, psychological, social and emotional factors. Peter Shakespear, ROWing Canada TRAINING WILL BEAT TALENT UNTIL TALENT TRAINS FERRARI MENTALITY TID athletes have no limitations Talent requires special development Talent requires special coaching Talent requires special expectations RE-ASSESS, EVALUATE, CHALLENGE CONTROL THE ENVIRONMENT AND EXPECTATIONS

5 Lindsay Fischer, Director National Ballet Train the family not just the performer (athlete) for best results in today s world There are no winners you are here to serve Give back to your passion (sport) Everyone has a limit the courage to see the limit daily is the test.
