Chairman s Report It is often useful to reflect on the where we have come from, and where we are now, to gain an insight into the achievements during the period. I would like to highlight this in my report to you where has Blind Sports Australia come from and where are we now. During the year the Blind Sports Australia CEO, Robert McPhail, resigned which was unexpected. The Board acted quickly to ensure the continued operations of the organisation and engaged management consultancy, Byronvale Advisors, to manage the organisation for the remainder of the year. The finances of Blind Sports Australia were in a dire position at the latter part of We however managed to navigate through this period with the support of the Blind Sporting Council, Prize Promotions and Byronvale Advisors. With the support of these partners Blind Sports Australia launched a national fundraising campaign, Pin & Win, which has been extremely successful. Blind Sports Australia reports a profit this financial year the first for many years. Blind Sports Australia is now working to a plan to achieve long-term financial stability and sustainability. We have also diversified fundraising activities and will be continuing to do so over the next months. Blind Sports Australia is grateful for the continued financial support from the Australian Sports Commission. The Board embarked on a process this year to place Blind Sports Australia in a more prominent position. There has been substantial progress on rebranding Blind Sports Australia. In March the Board worked on developing a three year strategic plan. Blind Sports Australia has three main strategic priorities: Participation - To increase the participation in blind sports by all the blind community regardless of age or severity of vision impairment. Promotion - To promote blind sports to all members of the community as a worthwhile activity to increase social inclusion and for a sustainable healthy lifestyle. Advocacy - To advocate on behalf of its members at local, national and international level. The Members are encouraged to work directly with their members to achieve these objectives. We thank those Members who have worked with Blind Sports Australia to improve the opportunities of blind and vision impaired persons to become active in sport. Blind Sports Australia is grateful for the continued support and advice from the Australian Sports Commission through its representative Amanda Beehag. In planning for the we asked all Members to submit their planned projects, initiatives and activities and indicate where they would like support from Blind Sports Australia. These were evaluated against the strategic priorities and members will receive both financial assistance and administrative support this year. Another initiative this year was the launch of a completely new website. The new website contains a wealth of information on blind sports.

Looking forward to the year ahead it is encouraging to see the vast array of activities planned by members from grass-roots to international and elite levels. We look forward to working closely with Members to assist where we can, and to develop greater collaboration, for the benefit of all blind sports. I would like to take this opportunity to thank my fellow Board members, Gary Sargent and Sam Theodore, for their unstinting work on the Board this year. It has been a very challenging year for all. In conclusion the Board thanks Stephen Barnes for his untiring work to change Blind Sports Australia. Stephen brought knowledge and commitment to help Blind Sports Australia respond to future demands as a National Sporting Organisation. We are also pleased to have secured Stephen s services on an ongoing basis. David Blyth AO Chairman Blind Sports Australia Gail Hughes from Port Douglas the major prize winner in the 2013 Scratch and Win campaign with David Blyth, Chair, Blind Sports Australia.

Message from the Australian Sports Commission It has been another significant year for the Australian Sports Commission and the sports network as we continue working together to encourage all Australians to experience the joy of sport. The sporting field is where friendships are formed, life skills are learned and heroes are made and this is why in the Australian Government invested almost $120 million in our national sporting organisations despite a challenging economic environment. In the past year the ASC has worked with sports to reform their governance structures and develop strategic and commercial capabilities. The ASC is determined to create better businesses ones that will thrive in the years ahead and we are leading the way with a lean and agile operating model and ongoing commitment to our own good governance. One of the highlights of was the Australian Government s announcement of the Sporting Schools program. This $100 million program, which builds upon the successful Active After-school Communities program, will commence in 2015 and reach more than 850,000 children. It will allow the sports to boost their participation numbers and is a significant endorsement of the importance of community sport to the Government. Other highlights in have included: Community Coaching General Principles a free online training course that provides coaches with the basic skills they need. Grants programs a number of national grant programs were delivered to improve the participation of people from under-represented groups. The ASC also continues to pursue success on the world stage both in Olympic and non-olympic sports to deliver Australians the exceptional performances they crave. There have been few periods in Australia s sporting history filled with so much activity or promise, and on behalf of the ASC I thank you for your hard work and support. You continue to prove your capacity to succeed in an ever-changing sporting landscape, and I look forward to working with you in the future. John Wylie AM Chair Australian Sports Commission

ABBA Commonwealth Games Para-Sport Report by Joy Forster We left for Glasgow on the 11 th July 2014 at 9:00am to travel to Sydney. We attended a farewell luncheon put on by Cabramatta Bowls Club (Karen Murphy s club) and afterwards left there to catch a flight to Glasgow at 9:30pm. Arriving in Glasgow, we then travelled to Ayr a beachside town which is a 45 minute drive from Glasgow. On Monday 14 th July, we travelled to Glasgow to receive our accreditation and afterwards back to Ayr to have a bonding session at the races. We played 2 games at Ayr against a group from Glasgow called the Pollockshaws Premier League Champions to give us match practice. Other days we travelled to Glasgow to practice on the Kelvingrove greens which were to be used for the Commonwealth Games. We had a practice match against Canada on one occasion. On Friday 18 th July we left for the village which was fantastic, Australia having headquarters handy to all amenities. More practice at Kelvingrove greens until 22 nd July. Kay Moran organized a Supporters Bowling get together (social) at Crookston Bowls Club prior to the opening ceremony - what a welcome we received. That night we attended the opening ceremony which was next door to the village. Our competition B2/B3 Mixed Pairs commenced the 24 th July, Joy Forster and Tony Scott with directors Bruce Jones and Peter Scott respectively and coach Kelvin Kerkow represented Australia. We played against England, Wales and Scotland and lost against England and Scotland and had a good win against Wales enough to see us through to the semi finals. The semi finals were between South Africa and New Zealand and Scotland and Australia. In the play off for the gold and silver were Scotland and South Africa with South Africa winning gold and Scotland silver. In the play off for the bronze were Australia and New Zealand and Australia were fortunate enough to win the bronze medal. We completed our competition on 26 th July and on the 28 th July the other para-sport team commenced their competition playing New Zealand and South Africa unfortunately they did not make the finals. Peter Scott, Tony Scott, Bruce Jones and Joy Forster After all our competitions were finished we went along and supported all the other players. Joy & Bruce interviewed by Barbara Miller We attended the closing ceremony on 3 rd August and had a good time. We left the

Commonwealth Games Village on 4 th August and arrived home on Wednesday 6 th August. Joy & Bruce having a great time at the closing ceremony

Blind & Vision Impaired Tenpin Bowlers Aust. (Inc.) The BVIT year got off to a flying start in February with the commencement of the annual Coast to Coast Phantom league. Participating players send in results from their first two games each week, with the results published on the BVIT web page. The final round will be bowled during the week of 1st December At the time of writing, Marilyn Luck (B1 Vic) was leading the pack by a good margin, but there are only 10 points separate 2nd and 8th places so it looks like being a close finish! In March 2014, bowlers from Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria, and Western Australia participated in the BVIT National championships held at AMF Rooty Hill in Sydney NSW. The Rooty Hill RSL complex was an extremely suitable venue for our bowlers, family and friends, with the bowl, RSL and accommodation at the Novatel within easy walking distance. Bowlers at the 2014 National Championships The standard of competition was high; Marilyn Luck (B1 Victoria) was back to her old form after a prolonged period away from the game with a back injury. Russell Hart (B2 NSW) bowled a high game of 242. The championship was also notable for the number of bowlers entering for the first time. Cassie Lovett (B3 WA) and Joan ANDREWS (Vic) both bowled well over average in their first nationals championships. At the end of the competition, the following players were selected to represent Australia at the 2015 IBSA World Games in Seoul, South Korea: Marilyn LUCK (B1 Victoria) Justin BETTES (B1 WA) Donna HOLLAD (B2 NSW) Rhian PATCHING (B3 Queensland) Kingsley WILLIAMS (B3 Victoria)

Back Row: Kingsley Williams, Rhian Patching, Justin Bettes Front Row: Marilyn Luck, Donna Holland In the 2011 IBSA event in Kuala Lumpur, the Australian team bowled extremely well, coming 3rd in the overall medal tally. Medal winners included Marilyn Luck who won a Gold Medal in B1 Singles and a Gold Medal in All Events, Justin Bettes who won Silver in B1 Singles and Rhian Patching and Justin Bettes who won a Bronze medal in doubles. The BVIT web page is updated regularly with the Newsletter, general information and current Phantom League scores and will carry details of Australia s participation at the 2015 IBSA Games in Seoul, South Korea in the middle of next year.

Blind Sporting Association of New South Wales The past twelve months has been a challenging year for the Blind Sporting Association of NSW. During the fourth quarter Dr Patricia Downie OAM decided to resign as President due to personal reasons. I want to take this opportunity to acknowledge Pat for her long standing service to blind sports. Karin Schicht has decided not to stand for the position of Secretary this year and I take this opportunity to acknowledge her for her distinguished service. In particular I want to sincerely thank Karin for her support enabling me to undertake my role to the best of my ability. I am sure my fellow Board members will agree that both of these women have made a significant contribution with furthering the aims and objectives of Blind Sporting Association of NSW (BSA NSW) and have left a legacy that will benefit blind and vision impaired people in the future. I also want to acknowledge Margot Zaska and Jeffrey Slatter from Office of Sport, Sport and Recreation NSW for their continued support and sound advice. BSA NSW received funding from Office of Sport, Sport and Recreation under the Sports Development Program to engage a part-time Project Officer. During the period Matthew Dunstan undertook an information gathering process regarding the range of services currently available to members. This process included gathering information on the thoughts and attitudes of individual members, affiliate organisations and other key stakeholder organisations. Information was gathered through individual surveys collected in written (hard copy) form, via online and over the telephone. Two member forums were planned however were cancelled due to poor levels of attendance. Organisations participated in an interactive forum and provided key feedback and advice from their perspective. Key feedback received: A clear and concise response that the community needs BSA NSW Issues identified by members and stakeholder groups were consistent with the current BSA NSW Strategic Plan Both individual members and stakeholder organisations identified the role that sport and recreation plays in social and wellbeing contexts Majority of comments received expressed confusion of the role and purpose of BSA NSW in terms of participation and program delivery Opportunity for greater collaboration within the blind and vision impaired sporting community to share resources and learnt knowledge at an organizational level Specific feedback received: Greater need for participation opportunities within the community The current membership costs are affordable The perception around value for membership is average. This information has been incorporated in the BSA NSW Business Plan. A big thanks to Matthew for developing the business plan and other policies.

Despite the challenges during the past twelve months The Board has made significant achievements in the following areas: Adopted many new policy documents including Risk Management, Privacy, Work Health and Safety, Member Protection, Working with Children, Volunteer, Sun Protection and Code of Conduct; Strategic Plan; Draft Business Plan; Website Appointed a Member Information Protection Officer (MPIO) Mrs Denise Bradley. Denise recently retired as a Vision Teacher with the Department of Education. The BSA NSW was a successful recipient of a Participation grant from Office of Sport, Sport and Recreation NSW to host a Blind Sports Camp for blind and vision impaired children between 12 and 18 years of age. The camp will be held from 25 to 28 September 2014 at the Penrith Academy of Sport and will give the kids an opportunity to participate in a range of exciting sporting activities including: Blind Golf; Tenpin Bowling; Lawn Bowls; Para Rowing; Sailability; Athletics (track and field); Swimming; Fishing; Blind Cricket; Goalball and Indoor Skydiving. The aim of the camp is to give the kids an opportunity to have fun, make new friends, be inspired by special guest speakers who are blind and vision impaired Paralympians, academics and musicians. I take this opportunity to thank my fellow Board Members Karin Schicht, Betty Redman, John Hayward, Dorothy Hession, David Saxberg and NSW Goalball delegates Tony Telfer and Murray and Tamara Elbourn for their ongoing support for BSA NSW. A special thanks to Blind Sports Australia in particular Stephen Barnes, Interim CEO, Blind Sports Australia for his valued support and advice. Ben Felten President
