4 Making a Time Line History of Canada Time lines are used to show when things happened in history. A time line shows the order of events in chronological order. Chronological means in the order that they happened. Use the steps on this page to make a time line of your own life. 1. List ten important things that have happened to you in your life. Remember to put the date that the event happened. If you do not remember the exact day, try to remember the month and year. 2. Number the events in the order that they happened. Put a number one next to the first thing that happened, a two by the next thing, and so on until all the events are numbered. This is how you put things into chronological order. 3. Put the six most important events on the time line below. Remember to keep them in chronological order. My Life Time Line By Bonus Activity: Make a time line using 10 of the events in the list of important dates in Canadian history. What dates did you choose? Why? Teacher Created Resources, Inc. 1 #3630 Canada

5 Time Line Game On the following pages is a Canadian history time line game. Explain to your students what a time line is and have them complete their personal time lines. After they have finished their time lines, have them discuss why they chose the events that they did for their time line. Have them display their time lines. They might want to make larger ones on long sheets of paper. Explain to the class that the Time Line Game is also a time line, even though it is not straight. It presents key events in the history of Canada. The game is a simple board game. Use buttons or beans for markers. Copy the four pages of the game and tape them together to make a game board for each group of 4 6 players. Make a spinner to go with each game board. You may want students to color their game boards and then laminate them for future use. Each student spins the spinner. The one with the highest number starts, then go clockwise around the group. The students take turns spinning, moving, and following the directions on the board. The first student to the end wins. To make the end more challenging, you may require that the winner has the exact number he or she needs to reach the last space. The purpose of the game is for students to learn some of the major events in Canadian history. Each student should be given a chance to finish the game even after the first player reaches the end. 3 = trois (twah) 4 = quatre (kat-[re]) 5 = cinq (sank) 1 = un/une (oon) Time Line (de[r]) 2 = deux Game #3630 Canada 2 Teacher Created Resources, Inc.
