2 Public Speaking Contest UTSC Event Information TSCPA Public Speaking Contest is a student- organized and student-led Contest at the University of Toronto Scarborough (UTSC), started by the Language Translation & Social Science Career Path Association (TSCPA) at UTSC, which is the first translation club and largest Career Path Club at UTSC. The contest is co-organized by the English/Chinese Translation (ECT) Program, Centre for French & Linguistics (CFL), at UTSC, which is the first English Chinese Translation undergraduate program in Canada. The TSCPA Public Speaking Contest is a one-day event for Debate, Impromptu and Sight Translation. Impromptu is available in English; Sight Translation is available in English to Mandarin Chinese, and Mandarin Chinese to English; Debate is available in English and Cantonese Chinese. One of the goals is to promote the multiculturalism, language dynamics and effective communication in Canada. Students have the opportunity to compete in the following themes: World Peace, Education, Self- reflecting, business and future ideology, for over $1500 value of prizes, and to take part in a social and networking session. January 20, am 5 pm Social Science Building (MW) This contest is designed for students, alumni, academics, and professionals across GTA who are interested in sharing their ideas about global issues and social justice through the contest platform. Contest History It was first created by TSCPA and the UTSC Debate Club (formerly UTSC Debate Union) in March It is the first public speaking contest at the Scarborough Campus featuring both Debate and Impromptu, and open for participation to all students on campus. It included wide range of topics for debate and impromptu, and the impromptu category featured English, Cantonese and Mandarin, three different languages to promote the multiculturalism of the Scarborough Campus. Yuen Yi Li Acupuncture & Health Centre was the founding sponsor for TSCPA, so as the Public Speaking Contest since English/Chinese Translation Program at UTSC was also the academic partner for TSCPA, so as the contest since Page

7 Public Speaking Contest UTSC Programming & Contest Description Debate English The Debate category is managed by the UTSC Model United Nation (MUN). It is part of the TSCPA Public Speaking Contest There should be 2 people per team. Delegates can form their own team/ they can form it during MUN Meeting, as well as before the contest. The MUN representatives will offer a general overview of the debate category before the contest. There will be 2 stages of the debate category, preliminary and final stage. There will be 3 judges in each match and these judges are the general public. The Debate category will be following the Canadian Parliamentary style. Dress code is Business Casual. Prize will be given to the Top 2 teams. Motion List: Preliminary: TBA Final: TBA There will be a moderator from the TSCPA Contest Regulation Committee present at all Debate category rooms to enforce the rules and maintain the regulations or solve problems at all times. Additionally, TSCPA will have photographers during the contest, and all delegates should be aware of the photo- taking activity. If you have any concerns, feel free to contact one of our representatives. Debate Cantonese The Cantonese Debate follows the Canadian Parliamentary style, where there must be 4 people per team. Both teams will be randomly assigned with the position at the contest. This is a beginner level of debate. Impromptu - English The Impromptu Contest is managed by the Language Translation & Social Science Career Path Association (TSCPA), also the event host. Each delegate will have 2 minutes to prepare for the topic they draw before their start time, and they will have a maximum of 3 minutes to talk about their topic. Delegate can choose to redraw another topic if they have legitimate reason. There will be a TSCPA Contest Regulation Committee member in all impromptu contest rooms at all times to help solve any concerns and problems during the contest. TSCPA will provide a general overview for the Impromptu contest during the kickoff event and before the contest. There will be 2 stages of the Impromptu category, first and second round. There will be 3 judges in each contest room, and the final score will be an average of the two rounds score. The impromptu contest score will be evaluated in the five main areas including Content, Pronunciation, Pace, body language and voice. Dress code is Business Casual. 9 Public Speaking Contest UTSC The list of Impromptu topics will be available at the impromptu information booth at the contest and our website. Sight Translation Sight translation can be defined as the reading of a text by the interpreter from the source language into the target language, simultaneously, in a manner in which the content of the document can be easily understood by the audience. Each delegate will have 3-5 minutes to prepare for the translation piece that they draw before their starting time, and they will have a maximum of 3 minutes to present their translation (Refer to your contest room for the actual Rules and time allowed). Delegate can choose to redraw another topic if they have legitimate reason. There will be a TSCPA Contest Regulation Committee member in all contest rooms at all times to help solve any concerns and problems during the contest. Delegates can drop notes and prepare to read aloud their translation in front of the other delegates, judges and audiences. Two Levels will be offered including Beginner and Intermediate. Delegate can choose to translate from English to Mandarin Chinese OR Mandarin Chinese to English. They must pick either one level and either one way of translation to compete, if they decide to participate in this category. Beginner Level is opened to any students with no translation background. If you are current/ former student in LGGB/ECTB Chinese courses or above level / equivalent, you should choose the intermediate level instead. Intermediate Level is opened to ECT Program and LGG Chinese course Students at UTSC ONLY. A number of workshops will be provided to prepare delegates who participate in this category of the contest. More information about the workshop will be updated soon. 1 Champion is created per Translation way and per level; 1 First Runner up is created per Translation way and per level in this Category as well, resulting in 8 prizes in total.
