INAS SPORTS STRATEGY & PARTNERSHIPS PRESENTERS Marc Truffaut INAS Sport Technical Officer. Lorraine Landon Chair, FIBA Women s Commission & INAS Basketball Director INAS VISION Athletes with an intellectual disability across the World have the opportunity to achieve excellence in sport and high level competition
INAS VISION INAS is one of 4 International Disability Sport Organisations in membership of the International Paralympic Committee The aspirations of athletes with intellectual disability is to represent their country at the Paralympics each 4 years. INAS VISION INAS sports athletics swimming table tennis were re-included into the 2012 Paralympic Games. INAS is committed to working with IPC to include further sports for athletes with an Intellectual Disability in future Paralympics INTERNATIONAL EVENTS For those sports not currently included in the Paralympics INAS conducts the Global Games and World Championships where the best athletes in the world can compete against each other. For many athletes World Championships & Global Games will be the pinnacle of their careers.
INAS SPORT STRUCTURE SPORT ACTIVITY World Regional Total Athletics Swimming Table Tennis Basketball Futsal SPORT ACTIVITY World Regional Total Tennis Cycling Rowing Alpine/Nordic Cricket Total
INTERNATIONAL INAS is committed to providing each of their athletes in the 12 INAS sports, well organised events - Global Games, World Championships and Regional Championships at the highest possible level. INTERNATIONAL What does a well organised Global Games and World Championship need to be world class? KEY DELIVERABLES Suitable Competition Venue Training and warm up venues Technical Officials including referees/ umpires & scoring officials Results management system
KEY DELIVERABLES Suitable accommodation & meals for the athletes Adequate transportation for athletes to and from the games Feel of the event it is special for these athletes DELIVERY MODEL How should this be delivered for each sport What is the best model DELIVERY MODEL One of INAS s objectives is to promote inclusion for all athletes Inclusion in sport is sport should deliver sport How does INAS achieve this across each of the 12 sports
PARTNERSHIPS INAS needs to have partnerships with each of the International Federations PARTNERSHIPS What can an IF provide to INAS: Technical officials Event management expertise Results management systems Anti-doping education PARTNERSHIPS Consistent competition rules Support with equipment provision e.g. equipment sponsor partnerships Coach education Athlete development Inclusion in other educational opportunities for officials
PARTNERSHIPS Development in all the zones Procedures and Operational manuals for events Advocate voice of support for inclusion of more sports & events for Intellectual Disability in Paralympic Games PARTNERSHIPS A good partnership requires both parties to be committed to the objective INAS is already in negotiation with a number of IF s to help deliver world class competitions PARTNERSHIPS There will be challenges in developing these partnerships However the outcomes will deliver the first class event that our INAS athletes aspire to each year
WHAT WAS ACHIEVED LAST 2 YEARS A good worldwide program A really poor regional sport program In para-sport less participants in the discipline In some para-sport big difficulty to go on doing regional event( swimming) The number of participants in Global Game sports has increased No new sports were able to reach the INAS standard POSITIVE ACHIEVEMENTS The good: 13 INAS sports (same in 2010) A recognized event with the Global Games. Regular programme of World Championship events. Clear event bid process in place Clear rules in sports Contracting procedure in place NOT SO GOOD : Regional events in only 1 region out of 5 Standard of events can vary considerably Some events poorly attended Calendar is not always coordinated with IPC Some events run under INAS name that do not observe eligibility rules Doping control not always available Poor relation with IPC and other IF
What can you do to help Get involved in INAS Set events for ID and open it to other countries (INAS sanctioned) Ensure that your athletes participate at INAS events. Promote INAS around your country and your NPC What can you do to help Increase the role of each sport director and appoint groups of people to run the discipline (one from each region) Build strong relationship between INAS and the IPC and IF Make sure INAS event s are part of the PG qualification route What can you do to help Set relation with scientist in order to set classification Build strong INAS event calendar far in advance with a coordination with IPC.
Workshop What are the challenges to deliver a INAS event in partnership with the respective International Federations How can we grow the numbers of athletes in each of the 12 sports for each member federation How do we provide relevant competition for all athletes with an intellectual disability
