1 Tim Malloy, Assistant Director (203) FOR RELEASE: JUNE 6, 2018 Rubenstein Pat Smith (212) U.S. VOTERS HAVE TRUMP S BACK AS HE FACES KIM JONG-UN, QUINNIPIAC UNIVERSITY NATIONAL POLL FINDS; EXCEPT FOR FIRST LADY, TRUMP TEAM GETS LOW GRADES American voters approve percent of President Donald Trump s planned meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un next week and approve percent of the way the president is handling the nation s policy toward North Korea, according to a Quinnipiac University National Poll released today. President Trump is not prepared for negotiations with Kim Jong-un, 48 percent of voters say, while 46 percent say he is prepared. But 49 percent have confidence in Trump to handle the situation, while 47 percent do not have confidence, the independent Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh-peack) University National Poll finds. Only 20 percent of voters believe North Korea will ever give up their nuclear weapons, as 68 percent don t believe this will ever happen. American voters disapprove percent of the job the president is doing, compared to a percent disapproval in an April 25 poll, continuing a very gradual shrinkage in Trump s net disapproval. Republicans, white voters with no college degree and white men are the only listed party, gender, education, age or racial groups with a clear positive approval rating. By a divided percent, voters approve of the way Trump is handling the economy. He gets negative grades for handling other key issues: percent for handling foreign policy, despite positive grades on North Korea; percent for handling immigration. Korea helps. The booming economy helps. President Donald Trump s approval rating peeks out of the 30s just as he faces perhaps his biggest challenge yet Kim Jong-un, said Tim Malloy, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Poll. Despite a slight warming in feelings about the president s performance, he still gets crushed on personality traits. Yes, he s strong and intelligent but is he a role model for American kids? No way. -more- 1

2 Quinnipiac University Poll/June 6, 2018 page 2 American voters still give President Trump negative grades on most character traits: percent say he is not honest; percent say he does not have good leadership skills; percent say he does not care about average Americans; percent say he is not level-headed; percent say he is a strong person; say he is intelligent; percent say he does not share their values; percent say he is not a good role model for children. Melania Trump American voters give First Lady Melania Trump a percent favorability rating, while 30 percent don t know enough about her to form an opinion of her. Other people close to President Trump get negative favorability ratings: percent for Vice President Mike Pence; percent for White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders; percent for Trump attorney Rudy Giuliani. First Lady Melania Trump might have the best favorability rating of anyone in or close to the White House, similar to Michelle Obama s favorability in 2010, Malloy said. A total of 62 percent of American voters are somewhat dissatisfied or very dissatisfied with the way things are going in the nation today, as 37 percent are very satisfied or somewhat satisfied. Voters disapprove percent of the way Congress is handling its job. They give the Republican Party a negative percent favorability rating and give the Democratic Party a negative percent favorability. American voters say percent, including percent among independent voters, that they want to see the Democratic Party win control of the U.S. House of Representatives this year. Voters say percent, including percent among independent voters, that they want the Democratic Party to win control of the U.S. Senate in this year s elections. From May 3l June 5, Quinnipiac University surveyed 1,223 voters nationwide, with a margin of error of +/- 3.4 percentage points, including design effect. Live interviewers call landlines and cell phones. The Quinnipiac University Poll, directed by Douglas Schwartz, Ph.D., conducts nationwide public opinion surveys, and statewide polls in Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Florida, Ohio, Virginia, Iowa, Colorado and Texas as a public service and for research.
