1 2012 AUSTRALIAN OLYMPIC TEAM GYMNASTICS AUSTRALIA NOMINATION CRITERIA MEN S GYMNASTICS NOTE: The AOC reserves the right to require amendments to the Nomination Criteria and amend its Selection Criteria as necessary, particularly where there is a change to the Qualification System or significant circumstances affecting the nomination process. 1 Shadow Team (1) Gymnastics Australia will choose Athletes from within its sport to be members of the AOC s Shadow Team. The AOC may recognise other Athletes from within this sport to also be members of the Shadow Team. (2) In order to be chosen by Gymnastics Australia as a member of the Shadow Team each Athlete must be a member of the 2011 or 2012 Senior National Squad in accordance with the Gymnastics Australia Men s Artistic Selection Policy (Attachment 3). (3) In order to be recognised as a member of the Shadow Team the Athlete must have signed the Consent to Shadow Team Membership Form (Attachment 1) and in the case of minors, the Parents/Guardians Acknowledgment for Minors Form (Attachment 2) and provided it to Gymnastics Australia s High Performance Manager, Adam Sachs, at 32 Cleeland Road, Oakleigh South, Victoria, (4) Gymnastics Australia will provide all Athletes chosen or recognised as members of the Shadow Team with the Guide to Selection, the Selection Criteria this Nomination Criteria. The AOC Olympic Team Selection By-Law and the Qualification System will be made available on the AOC s website ( (5) Gymnastics Australia will advise the AOC of the Athletes that it has chosen as members of the Shadow Team at such time as required by the AOC. (6) If an Athlete breaches the requirements of the Nomination Criteria, the Selection Criteria or the AOC Olympic Team Selection By-Law, Gymnastics Australia or the AOC may suspend or terminate the Athlete s membership of the Shadow Team. 2 Nomination of Individual Athletes For the purposes of nomination to the AOC of individual Athletes for selection to the 2012 Australian Olympic Team, Gymnastics Australia will: (1) only nominate Athletes who have been selected by Gymnastics Australia to participate in the Olympic Test Event (10 January 2012, London, UK), in accordance with the Gymnastics Australia Event Specific Criteria for the 2012 OTE Selection Trial. (2) in the event that an Athlete qualifies a quota place at the Olympic Test Event (10 January 2012, London, UK) by name, pursuant to the FIG Qualification System, nominate that Athlete to the AOC. (3) in the event that Australia is allocated one qualification place, pursuant to the FIG Qualification System, nominate one all-around individual Athlete to the AOC. In determining the Athlete to be nominated to the AOC, Gymnastics Australia will: (c) only nominate an Athlete who has competed in the All Around competition of the 2012 Olympic Nomination Competition (2012 Australian National Championships to be held in Sydney (AUS) on 24 May 2012); and only nominate an Athlete who has competed in the Olympic Test Event (10 January 2012, London, UK). only nominate an Athlete who, in the Gymnastics Australia Nomination Committee s absolute discretion, is determined to be most likely to qualify for an Individual All Around and/or Apparatus Final at the 2012 Olympic Games, as demonstrated by:
2 (i) (ii) the Athlete s performance in the 2012 Olympic Nomination Competition (2012 Australian National Championships); the Athlete s results achieved in one or more of the following international events: a World Championships (7-16 October 2011, Tokyo, JPN); b Olympic Test Event (10 January 2012, London, UK); c Pacific Rim Championships (14 18 March 2012, Everett, USA); d Kyle Shewfelt Gymnastics Festival (19 25 March 2012, Calgary, CAN). (iii) the athlete s consistent performance in training from 1 December 2011 to 24 May (d) provide personal coaches with an opportunity to be consulted prior to any decision being made: (i) (ii) following the completion of the 2012 Olympic Nomination Competition (2012 Australian National Championships); and any member of the Gymnastics Australia Nomination Committee with a current personal coach relationship with any athlete involved in the nomination process will be ineligible to vote on the final decision. (4) for the avoidance of doubt, should Gymnastics Australia nominate an athlete in accordance with clause 2(2), then clause 2(3) will have no effect. (5) only nominate Athletes who are, or are recognised by the AOC as, members of the Shadow Team; (6) only nominate those Athletes it honestly believes have met the requirements described in the Selection Criteria; (7) only nominate those Athletes who have signed the Athlete Nomination Form as issued by the AOC from time to time; (8) not nominate more Athletes (including reserves) than the maximum number permitted under the FIG Qualification System; and (9) not nominate Athletes who have breached the AOC Anti-Doping By-Law unless the Athlete has already been sanctioned for the breach and has completed the sanction imposed. 3 Nomination of Athletes for the Men s Artistic Gymnastics Team Event Australia has not qualified a Team for the 2012 Olympic Games, London in accordance with the FIG Qualification System. 4 Reserve Athlete (1) the Gymnastics Australia Nomination Committee may, in their absolute discretion, identify one (1) additional Athlete for the Men s Artistic Gymnastics event as a reserve Athlete. The Athlete identified as a reserve Athlete must: be a Shadow Team member; and be ranked by the Gymnastics Australia Nomination Committee, in their absolute discretion, as the next highest ranked Athlete in accordance with the process set out in clause 2 above.
3 (2) an Athlete identified as a reserve Athlete for the Men s Artistic Gymnastics event will not be nominated to the AOC and therefore will not be part of the 2012 Australian Olympic Team, unless replacing an Athlete as outlined in clause 7 below. 5 Illness/Misadventure/Extenuating Circumstances This clause will only apply in determining whether an Athlete has met the additional criteria imposed by Gymnastics Australia pursuant to clause 2(3); (1) In considering the performances of Athletes at events, training camps or other attendances required under 2(3) of this Nomination Criteria, the Gymnastics Australia Nomination Committee may in their discretion give weight to extenuating circumstances. (2) For the purposes of this clause 5, extenuating circumstances means an inability to compete and/or attend events, training camps or other attendances arising from: injury or illness; equipment failure (where applicable); (c) travel delays; (d) (e) bereavement or disability arising from death or serious illness of an immediate family member; and/or any other factors reasonably considered by Gymnastics Australia to constitute extenuating circumstances. (3) Athletes unable to compete at events, training camps or other attendances required under this Nomination Criteria must advise Gymnastics Australia Chief Executive Officer in writing of this fact and the reasons before the commencement of the events, training camps or other attendances required under this Nomination Criteria. (4) In the case of illness or injury, Athletes will be required to undergo a medical examination by a doctor or doctors nominated or approved by Gymnastics Australia. (5) A decision in each case of extenuating circumstances will be made by the Gymnastics Australia Nomination Committee on an individual basis. Any such decision will not be binding on the AOC. 6 Making of Nominations Gymnastics Australia intend to make nominations to the AOC by 5:00pm AEST on Friday 1 June In any case, nominations by Gymnastics Australia must be received by the AOC by 10:00am AEST on Friday 22 June Nominations made after this deadline (or within such further deadline as the AOC may allow) will be invalid unless made pursuant to a direction or award in respect of an appeal against non-nomination to the Gymnastics Australia Appeals Tribunal or the Court of Arbitration for Sport pursuant to the AOC s Olympic Team Selection By-Law and which appeal had been commenced prior to the deadline for receipt of nominations by the AOC. The 10:00am AEST on Friday 22 June 2012 deadline for the making of nominations by Gymnastics Australia applies irrespective of any deadline prescribed under the Qualification System or by the Organising Committee for the 2012 Olympic Games. 7 Replacement of Athletes after Nomination by Gymnastics Australia to the AOC (1) Should any nominated individual Athlete be unable to compete in the 2012 Olympic Games by reason of injury or illness, then Gymnastics Australia will nominate the reserve Athlete identified in accordance with clause 4 of this Nomination Criteria. (2) If the Gymnastics Australia Nomination Committee determine that an athlete who has been nominated to and selected by the AOC should be replaced then:
4 Gymnastics Australia will recommend to the AOC that the athlete is to be replaced; and should the AOC (or during the period of the 2012 Olympic Games, the Chef de Mission of the 2012 Australian Olympic Team) determine that the selected athlete should be replaced; then 7 Amendments to Nomination Criteria (i) Gymnastics Australia may nominate a replacement athlete for selection by the AOC (in accordance with this Nomination Criteria); and (ii) the AOC (or during the period of the 2012 Olympic Games, the Chef de Mission of the 2012 Australian Olympic Team) may in its absolute discretion select that nominated replacement athlete. In exercising its discretion, the AOC will be subject to any conditions that apply in relation to entry for the 2012 Olympic Games. This Nomination Criteria may be amended by Gymnastics Australia with the prior written approval of the AOC. Any amended Nomination Criteria will be distributed by Gymnastics Australia via to all Shadow Team members and posted on the Gymnastics Australia website at 8 Interpretation 9 Law (1) Words used in this Nomination Criteria have the same meaning ascribed to them in the AOC s Olympic Team Selection By-Law unless a contrary meaning appears from the context. (2) In this Nomination Criteria the following words and phrases have the following meanings: FIG means: the Federation Internationale de Gymnastique. Gymnastics Australia Nomination Committee means: the panel appointed by Gymnastics Australia from time to time comprising of Men s National Technical Director, Men s National Judging Co-ordinator, Men s National Coach and Gymnastics Australia High Performance Manager (ex officio). This document is governed by the laws applicable in the State of New South Wales, Australia.
5 Attachment AUSTRALIAN OLYMPIC TEAM CONSENT TO SHADOW TEAM MEMBERSHIP Gymnastics Australia (NF) [Insert name of Athlete] I consent to being a member of the Shadow Team for nomination by the above NF for selection to the 2012 Australian Olympic Team. I make this acknowledgement honestly and fully and confirm that this acknowledgement is not false or misleading: 5 I have been provided with, or been given access to, and will be bound by and observe the terms of the AOC Olympic Team Selection By-Law, the AOC Selection Criteria applicable to my sport and my NF s Nomination Criteria in force and as amended from time to time. I acknowledge that all members of the Shadow Team will likewise be bound by and must observe the same terms. 6 The AOC s Olympic Team Selection By-Law and the Selection Criteria may be amended by the AOC from time to time. I will be bound by and observe the AOC s Olympic Team Selection By- Law and the Selection Criteria as amended, and acknowledge that any amendments to the AOC s Olympic Team Selection By-Law and Selection Criteria will be posted to the AOC s website ( along with the Qualification System applicable to my event. 7 The decision whether or not to nominate me to the AOC for selection in the 2012 Australian Olympic Team is subject to the Nomination Criteria and is at the discretion of my NF. 8 If my NF decides to nominate me for selection to the 2012 Australian Olympic Team I will be required to complete an Athlete Acknowledgement as determined by the AOC from time to time. 9 In the event that my NF nominates me to the AOC for selection in the 2012 Australian Olympic Team I am not guaranteed to be selected in the 2012 Australian Olympic Team. The decision whether or not to select me as a member of the 2012 Australian Olympic Team is subject to the AOC s Olympic Team Selection By-Law and Selection Criteria and is at the absolute discretion of the AOC. 10 (1) I have not at any time engaged in conduct (whether publicly known or not and whether before or after the date of my selection), which has brought, brings or would have the tendency to bring me or my sport into disrepute or censure, or which is or would have the tendency to be inconsistent with, contrary to or prejudicial to the best interests, image or values of the AOC or Team Sponsors, or as a result of which my membership would not be or would not likely be in the best interests of the 2012 Australian Olympic Team or the Shadow Team; (2) I have not at any time (whether before or after the date of my selection) been convicted of, or charged with, any serious offence involving violence, alcohol or drugs, or any sex offence, or any offence relating to any betting or gambling activities on sport, or any offence which is punishable by imprisonment; (3) I have and will continue to honestly and fully disclose information to my NF and the AOC concerning any conduct that might be in breach of (1) or (2) above or concerning any criminal offence of whatever nature, with which I have been charged, or of which the I have been convicted, and consent to my NF and the AOC making enquiries to relevant authorities for any details of my criminal record (if any), including details of any charges pending or any spent convictions disclosable by law, and consent to those authorities providing that information in answer to those enquiries; (4) any matter arising under (1), (2) or (3) above is to be determined, or breach thereof excused, by the AOC in its sole and absolute discretion.
6 DISCLOSURE (Please identify if there are any matters to be disclosed in respect of paragraph 6(1), (2) or (3) above i.e. identify any disreputable conduct, criminal convictions or criminal charges.) 11 My contact details are: Address: Facsimile: 12 I will notify my NF in writing of any change in the above contact details. Any failure by me to advise my NF in writing of a change in my contact details may be to my detriment. Any announcement to be made or notice required to be sent pursuant to the AOC s Olympic Team Selection By-Law may be sent to one or more of the above contacts, or such other contact as notified in writing by me, and in the case of: (1) post, the announcement or notice is deemed to have been received by me by properly addressing, prepaying and posting a letter containing the announcement or notice, and to have been received by me on the third business day after the date of its posting. Any announcement or notice sent by post to me overseas will be forwarded by air mail; (2) facsimile transmission, the announcement or notice is deemed to have been received by me by properly addressing the facsimile transmission and transmitting it to the number supplied by me and to have been received by me the next business day after the date of its transmission; and (3) , the announcement or notice is deemed to have been received by me by properly addressing the address and transmitting it to the address supplied by me and to have been received by me on the next business day after the date of transmission unless the AOC or NF is advised that the transmission failed to send to the addressee. 13 If I wish to utilise Specialised Equipment at the Games, I will submit a request in writing to the AOC Director of Sport no later than 6 months prior to the Games. This request is subject to the approval of the AOC in accordance with the 2012 Australian Olympic Team Membership Agreement Athletes. 14 This consent is governed by the laws applicable in the State of New South Wales. 7 Attachment AUSTRALIAN OLYMPIC TEAM PARENTS/GUARDIANS ACKNOWLEDGEMENT FOR MINORS Gymnastics Australia (NF) [Insert name of Athlete] I/we, the undersigned parents/guardians of the Athlete agree (and if more than one, then jointly and severally agree) as follows: 1. the Athlete is under the age of 18 years as at the date of signing the Consent to Shadow Team Membership; 2. I/we have read and understood the AOC Olympic Team Selection By-Law and the AOC Selection Criteria applicable to the sport of Men s Gymnastics ( the Selection Terms ) and have fully explained to the Athlete the Selection Terms. To this end I/we have obtained independent legal advice as to the Selection Terms in order to clarify any doubts or concerns I/we may have had in this regard; 3. the Athlete has read the Selection Terms and, together with the benefit of our full explanation, understands their meaning and effect; 4. the Selection Terms are for the benefit of the Athlete; 5. the Athlete's eligibility for being considered for nomination by the above NF for selection to the 2012 Australian Olympic Team, may be terminated in the event of any breach of the Selection Terms; and 6. this acknowledgement is governed by the laws applicable in the State of New South Wales. 8 Attachment /2012 NATIONAL SQUADS Junior International Squad, Senior International Squad, U16, U14, and U12 Junior National Squads, AIS/GA Olympic Squad 2011/2012 Junior International Squad (Squad term 31 July July 2012) 1. Eligibility : 1.1 Subject to clause 1.2 in order to be eligible for selection to the 2011/2012 Junior International Squad an athlete must: (c) have achieved a minimum AA score of 74.0 points at one of the selection events set out in paragraph 2.1 (Nominated Selection Events) ; and, be a minimum of 14 years of age and a maximum of 18 years of age in the year of competition; and, have participated in one of the Nominated Selection Events 1.2 If an athlete has not met any of the eligibility requirements set out in paragraphs and (c) above the athlete may still be eligible if: the athlete is a Special Consideration athlete as per the Selection Policy (Part A - Article 5.7). the athlete is an Additional Athlete as per the Selection Policy (Part A - Article 6.1). 2. Nominated Selection Events : 2.1 a) 2011 Australian Gymnastics Championships 2.2 It is a condition of selection that an athlete attends the compulsory AIS/GA Olympic Squad Training Camps (Full Camps Based Scholarship Holders), unless an athlete has had an application for special
12 consideration in relation to that Training Camp accepted by the Selection Committee (Part A Article 5). 3. Squad Size: 3.1 Up to 20 athletes will be selected to the AIS/GA Olympic Squad 3.2 Up to 20 athletes will be named as AIS Camp Based Scholarship holders. 3.4 The remaining positions (up to a maximum of 20) will be flexible positions where the selected gymnasts will be classed as visiting athletes. 4. Selection: 4.1 The top 2 ranked AA athletes in the U16 division (2011 age eligible) from the 2011 Australian National Championships will be automatically selected to the AIS/GA Olympic Squad provided an All Around score over 2 rounds of competition of has been met. The top 3 ranked AA athletes in the U18 division (2011 age eligible) from the 2011 Australian National Championships will be automatically selected to the AIS/GA Olympic Squad provided an All Around score over 2 rounds of competition of has been met. (c) The top 3 ranked AA athletes in the Senior division from the 2011 Australian National Championships will be automatically selected to the AIS/GA Olympic Squad provided an All Around score over 2 rounds of competition of has been met. 4.2 The remaining athletes (up to a maximum of 20) will be appointed at the discretion of the MG Selection Committee. When appointing athletes to these positions the Selection Committee may consider all or some of the following factors (not listed in any order of priority) and may give such weight to any or all of these factors as the Selection Committee in its complete discretion sees fit: (i) Performances at nominated selection event(s) (ii) Past National & International results (over the preceding 6 months) (iii) Possible future team composition and possible individual all-around or individual apparatus medals (iv) Any accepted special consideration applications 5. AIS/GA Olympic Squad Review: The Selection Committee reserves the right to review the squad in December 2011 considering all or some of the following factors (not listed in any order of priority) and may give such weight to any or all of these factors as the Selection Committee in its complete discretion sees fit: (i) Performances at nominated selection event(s) (ii) Past National & International results (over the preceding 6 months)
13 (iii) (iv) Possible future team composition and possible individual all-around or individual apparatus medals Any accepted special consideration applications 6. Visiting Athletes: The National Coach reserves the right to select visiting athletes to join the AIS Camp Based Scholarship holders for each of the AIS/GA Olympic Squad Training Camps in 2011/2012, providing that the maximum number of 20 positions is not exceeded. When appointing the athletes to these positions, the National Coach may consider all or some of the following factors (not listed in any order of priority) and may give such weight to any or all of these factors as the National Coach in his complete discretion sees fit: (i) Must be a member of a National Squad. If not a member of one of the National Squads, the selection will be at the discretion of the National Coach and the Selection Committee (ii) Performances at nominated selection event(s) (iii) Past National & International results (over the preceding 6 months) (iv) Possible future team composition and possible individual all-around or individual apparatus medals (v) Any accepted special consideration applications.
