1 COSSA Bulletin June 2016 RANGE REMINDERS We have been getting more target, target stands and benches moved at various ranges. This should not be done. Anyone found moving stands or benches will be subject to disciplinary action. If you think a new bench or target stand is needed someplace, put a written request in to the COSSA Board and we will see what can be done. Any other suggestions or improvements to the range would also be welcomed. A new prone bench has been added to the Gong Range thanks to Dell Hackett, use it but do not move it. The plastic barrels marked with CPS belong to CPS and should not be used for target holders. DO NOT SHOOT THE BARRELS. FIRE TRAILERS The firefighting trailers have been filled and there is extra water in the storage tanks near the training center. For any construction use the water from the storage tanks, do not use the fire trailer water. RANGE FACILITIES Many of the COSSA ranges have fixed steel structures for use as target holders. The 200-yard Sight-In Range is a good example of this. Other ranges such as the Gong Range and the Buffalo Range have fixed steel targets. Under no circumstances are these structures to be moved or repositioned. All members and disciplines are obligated to follow this requirement of basic range use. GATE COMBINATION CHANGE It is time to change the gate combination again. This is a notice that the combination will be changed on July 13, This notice will also be put in the July newsletter. Current members will get the combination change sent to their address on record in July before the actual date of the combination change. GREAT BASIN PRECISION RIFLE April 30th Geoffrey was the only shooter that hit the 1,760 yard target. He hit the target twice out of three shots. Very good shooting. This was his second match with us. It takes COMMITMENT, PATIENCE AND TRIGGER TIME FOR LONG RANGE SHOOTING. He is now in the one-mile club and received his coin, engraved with his name and date. On May 3rd, I received this ; "That was an amazing match. I have never seen another match set up like this with such a diversity of targets and challenges. I appreciate the amount of work and dedication put in to these matches. They are really unparalleled anywhere else in the shooting world. I can t think of anywhere else a person can go to shoot at these distances." 2 MAY WORK PARTY The work party on May 18 th worked out well for the weather. The weather cooperated and we got things done that we would not have been able to do if the weather was bad. We accomplished several things, ie; The garbage trailer was dumped and it needed it. We finished putting in the posts for the new electric gate. There will be an automatic opening gate with a card and a new walk through gate also. The new gate is on order and will be installed in a couple of weeks. The fence from the old entrance gate and the new gate was completed and it looks very good. The fire level sign was moved back to make room for the new fence. New NRA range rules were also added to several bulletin boards including the Public range. Clean up was also done in preparation for the open house on June 11. The volunteers at the work party were; Eric Brown, Dave Sweet, Larry Confer, Fred Newton, Rich Fleming, Don Thomas, Roy Shirakata and Bill Lewis. Thanks guys, we could not get along without you. We will be holding a special work party on June 8 th in preparation of the Open House on June 11. In addition we will be setting up tents and such on Friday before the Open House and could use some volunteers. Also, we will be needing some volunteers to man a COSSA table, help with setup for lunch and the Fockler sighting in range on Saturday, the day of the Open House. If you can help out on either of these days, contact Bill Lewis, lewis.w.l@hotmail.com MAY MEETING SPEAKER Gary Lewis will speak at our June 9 th General Meeting on hunting Tahr in New Zealand. AT THE SAFETY BENCH Fire season is upon us! Remember to check the fire level on the COSSA website before coming to the range as well as note the current Fire Level posted at the Gate as you enter. Smoking at COSSA Park is ALWAYS restricted to inside vehicles. The BLM can also mandate additional restrictions depending on the fire conditions in and around COSSA Park. During extended hot weather, please monitor the COSSA website for fire alerts and possible range closure as conditions may quickly change! Commonly the summer months roll on, the BLM moves COSSA Park moves to Industrial Fire Protection Level 2 as follows: Smoking is restricted to inside vehicles Open fires prohibited, including campfires, charcoal fires and warming fires. Portable cooking stoves using liquefied or bottled fuels are allowed. Camping and parking of vehicles only allowed in designated areas. Our trailers give an extra level of protection to COSSA Park and its environs and also allow continued operation of COSSA Park as if the Industrial Fire Protection Level moves to Level 3. At Level 4 all activities at COSSA Park will be shutdown. COSSA fire trailers will be operational on June 1 st. COSSA s New Member Orientation sessions will train all new members in their use. 7 Guns of the Greasy Grass On the morning of June 25, 1876, General Custer led his men against a combined force of Sioux, Northern Cheyenne and Arapaho. Some of these Indians had recently fought General Crook's soldiers to a standstill at the Battle Where the Girl Saved Her Brother (Battle of the Rosebud), little more than a week before. This was an interesting time in firearms history with many different types of weapons represented. On the Indians' side, the bow and arrow, the lance, the tomahawk and war club were employed alongside warriors armed with flintlock, percussion rifles, "Trapdoor" carbines, Winchester repeaters and Colt single-actions. Soldiers were armed with the latest Trapdoors, Colts and their own guns. A total of 2,361 cartridges, cases and bullets have been recovered from the fight. Archaeologists have identified 45 different firearms types on the battlefield and 371 individual guns. On July 14, at the COSSA membership meeting, we will hold a display of the guns used at the Battle of the Little Bighorn, at a place the Indians called the Greasy Grass. Plan to be at this meeting and please bring guns that are representative of the guns used in the historic battle. Both replicas and originals guns are welcome. CPS UPDATE The COSSA Practical Shooting(CPS) hosted an Introduction to 3 Gun Class at the COSSA Range on May 14 th. Led by Tom Benge and assisted by Dave Webb,10 rookies were converted to 3 Gun aficionados. Typical of 3 Gun, significant attention was paid to safety, firearm handling, range commands, match scoring and match etiquette. All were given to opportunity to try their hand at a 3 Gun course and the transitioning from a rifle, to a handgun and then a shotgun on paper, steel and clay targets under the direct guidance of Tom. Dave then took the group to the Shoot House on Bay 7 which for many was a first time for shooting inside a structure. Tom and Dave left no AP doubt that the basics of 3 Gun is that safety and enjoyment of 3 Gun is more important than the competition itself. WOW! All COSSA members should try their hand at the CPS disciplines. Watch the CPS website for future clinics. On June 11 th CPS is hosting an Introduction to Competition Pistol. CPS advises they welcome introducing and incorporating new shooters into their monthly matches If you want to sign up or have questions, contact or Dave Webb, (cell/text), 3gun@oregonshooting.com ( ) Scores April 30th 1020 to 1760 yards total Geoffrey John D.
