1 Saturday, January 23, 2016 $15 for each Scout, $10 for each adult Location: Billings Rod and Gun Club 1.7 miles West of the Billings Airport and turn right on Rod and Gun Club Rd Rod and Gun Club Rd, Billings, MT Purpose: As with all scouting activities we seek to promote positive learning experiences for young men, their leaders, as well as the young adult (men and women) in the venturing program. In addition, we hope to expose youth to real life challenges and their solutions. In order to accomplish this we will establish a series of learning stations and challenges along a physically challenging course. At each station, well-trained adults will oversee the teaching and use of scout skills to lead to individual and group success. This basic format will be followed this year for all scouts. At each location the sled teams will be awarded points based on their teamwork, preparation, and ingenuity. At the conclusion of the course, prizes will be awarded for each station. Each Patrol should have 4-6 Scouts with no more than 8 per team. There are no separate programs for older scouts this year. Older and younger scouts will go through the course together. Klondike will precede RAIN, SNOW or SHINE Have your sleds and boys ready for any weather

3 2016 Klondike Rules and Guidelines 1. Registration forms and fees for all participants must be turned in By Saturday at 8:30am. Please be on time. We will give your patrols their first station assignment at registration. Payment is required that day. Permission slips (one per boy) are required. 2. Per National Boy Scout policies this is a Tobacco-Free event. No Smoking in the Klondike area. (Only in your own vehicle.) 3. National policies require that each unit must have two-deep leadership for any Boy Scout event. 4. A strict observance and adherence to the Scout Oath, Scout Law, and the Outdoor Code is necessary for the success of this event. Each patrol needs to be courteous to others. 5. Troops must bring water for drinking, etc. We will have a water buffalo there for some extra water available on site. 6. Guns, weapons, sheath knives, laser pointer, non-scout gear are not permitted at the Klondike. 7. The Boy Scout goal is low Impact, and we want to respect the public land we are using. Please utilize all your Leave No Trace camping skill. Bring your own trash bags and keep the area clean. The boys will be expected to leave each station clean. There is no trash removal. Take it home with you. Pack it in, pack it out. PRACTICE LEAVE NO TRACE! 8. Absolutely no scout should be riding in the back of pickup trucks or trailers. This is not permitted by Boy Scout National Policies and is a very unsafe habit to get into. 9. Please help your boys be prepared for any kind of weather. We will have a first aid station available for those in need. 10. Firewood must be brought in. Gathering firewood from the surrounding area is not permitted. The younger scouts will be cooking their noon meal over a fire. ALL fires are to be in fire barrels only. 11. Hot Cocoa will be available throughout the day. 12. All patrols and their sleds must pass inspection at the start. 13. Use only the camp latrines 14. All refuse must be removed from every station by the patrol. This includes cooling and bagging the coals from all fires. As there is no trash removal, take it home with you. 15. Follow the Outdoor Code (Handbook, page ) and the principles of Leave no Trace (handbook, pages ). 16. Use the Scout Buddy System at all times. 17. Scout leaders, parents, adults, family members, or friends may observe the scouts on the trail, but may not assist them in any way. One of the objects of this event is to encourage the scouts to use their own resources and make their own decisions. (If you scout leaders are wondering what you are going to do all day then volunteer to help!). 18. No liquid fuels, solid fuels, or accelerants of any kind are allowed for fire starting. All fire making material (including tinder) must be natural and packed on the patrol sled at the start. Matches may be used for fire starting, but extra points are given for starting fires with friction or flint and steel. All fires are to be built only in fire barrels that will be provided, or an approved troop fire barrel. Note: Batteries and steel wool are not allowed if you are trying to get extra points for starting the fire without matches. 19. Patrols must compete as a patrol with all members present at each station. The patrol may not be split into two or more parts to compete at more than one station at the same time.
4 Format for Scouts: Each Patrol becomes a dog sled team and proceeds to the various stations to try their abilities. The sled is loaded with the material and equipment needed to solve the problems at the stations, as well as lunch for the Patrol members. The patrol leader for each team will check in at Base Camp the morning of the Klondike Derby. At registration, each team will be assigned to a station along the Klondike Trail where they are to be when the starting at 9:40 am. Each team needs to be inspected before proceeding on to their first assigned station. Each team will proceed around the Klondike Trail and will be judged on their performance at each station. Scouting skills required at each station are outlined below. There is no time limit at most stations. If a station has more than 2 teams waiting you may proceed to another station. It is important to complete each task at every station correctly and completely. Upon arrival at each station, the patrol is to check in and is not to leave a station until they check out. At 12:45 noon, each team will go to headquarters and proceed to prepare their lunch for 45 minutes. During this time, they will be judged on fire building/snow melting and will cook and eat their lunch. Each team provides their own food. Each team will share their lunch with the judges. Each Patrol should prepare a "HOT LUNCH" at the lunch competition area. Extra points for starting a fire with friction or flint and steel. No open fires are permitted except in fire barrels. No liquid fuels or accelerants. Troops need to bring their own wood. Troops are encouraged to bring their own fire barrel. We will have some fire barrels available. All stations will be closed during the lunch period. Check out the exhibitors during lunchtime Detailed Scout Program Welcome to Klondike Each sled team will be assigned to a specific first station and there will be a map for each patrol of all the stations. REGISTRATION AND INSPECTION. The first stop before the teams go to their first station will be an inspection. To get this done quickly we will enlist troop leaders to be inspectors as they check in. We will circulate a list of what the teams need to have and do for the inspection. This needs to be done before 8:30 a.m.
5 Suggested Equipment List: Troop/Patrol Team or Crew Flag Patrol First Aid Kit (Handbook, page 290) Boy Scout Handbook Compass (8) 10 foot lengths of rope with the ends appropriately finished (Handbook, page 34) Pencil and paper Clipboard Watch Flashlight Pocketknife (3) Gallons of water Waterproof matches Flint and steel or hot spark kit Trash bag Plastic or canvas tarp Patrol roster Tinder, kindling, and wood fuel for 2 fires (materials must be all natural) #10 can with a wire bail Food and cooking supplies/utensils for lunch as outlined in Events Fire barrel Duct Tape (6) 6 foot poles Container for removal of lunch coals
6 Judges: In order for the Klondike Derby to be a success, we need judges to staff the stations. We would like the Klondike Derby to be an activity for all scouts. The questions and answers with all materials necessary will be provided. We are asking each scout troop to provide at least two judges. Each judge should recruit a second judge to allow for breaks during the day. Please contact Jason McKee to pre-register as a judge, and to get first choice of stations. Judges are required to be at their stations during normal competition time. Since it may be a long distance to some stations, it is a good idea to pack a Thermos of coffee or hot chocolate, and a chair. Awards and Recognition; Each scout who registers to participate in the Klondike will receive a patch. Each troop/team/crew that registers will receive a "Participation Ribbon" There will be a first, second, and third place award for each station. These awards will be given to the top 3 scoring patrols per station and handed out at the end of the day along with final scores. There will be an award for troops that stay Friday night. Registration: Please do not send registration form to the Council Office Unit roster: The unit leader will verify that the members of the patrol are actual active members of his unit, from a single patrol or a combination of two or more patrols. Unit leaders will verify that the Varsity/venturing teams and crews are 14 years of age. Leadership members are encouraged to serve as station judges. No patrol may enter the Klondike Derby unless they are listed on the ROSTER SHEET signed by the Scoutmaster and/or Coach. Registration forms and Checks payable to Black Otter District BSA. We don t have much cash and prefer checks. FEES MUST BE PAID SATURDAY MORNING. Unit rosters may be turned in on the day of event IN CASE OF EMERGENCY, UNIT LEADERS ARE REQUIRED TO BRING PERMISSION SLIPS FOR ALL SCOUTS AND WILL BE CHECKED WITH RESISTRATION FORM.
