It was fi rst shown off in 1973 and was adopted by the French Army in August ust The specifi cation was to produce a powerful and easy to use tactical weapon that could replace the MAS 46/56 and the MAT 49 submachine gun. The rifl e had to provide for the possibility of fi ring anti-tank and anti-personnel nades.
