2 How to use this book This book is a supplement to the Ops and Tactics RPG system, expanding the armor and firearm selection of the base Ops and Tactics Core Rulebook. This book is to used as a reference book, expanding the selection of firearms in the game, beyond the core rulebook, as well as a learning tool, to better understand each category of firearm, their intended uses, and tactics to use and develop on. For GMs, this book can be used when building campaigns, to provide a more real-world feeling to the NPCs, providing them with believable weaponry, as well as fitting tactics. Building a Campaign When building a campaign, your first question should always be What kind of Campaign am I making?. This question is asked, to determine how important, if at all, will firearms be in your campaign. Should multiple guns in different calibers make an appearance, or is everyone wielding 9x19mm? If the campaign is going to be action packed, then the details and intricacies should be fitting. The campaign should focus less on the simple interactions with the NPCs, and more on the action and fights. Likewise, if the campaign is heavily focused on drama, then the roleplay aspect of this should be focused on rather than the accessories to their primary sidearms. Be sure to ask your players what kind of game they wish to participate in, and use their answers to design a that type of campaign. If you do decide to run a game that is heavy on firearms, then this book will be a valuable asset. You can look up various firearms and manufacturers, and your players can decide and choose the firearms they wish to possess and use. Even if you do not choose to run a campaign that is heavy on firearms, this book is still useful to you. When firearms do appear, you can use the listings to select the right fitting firearm, as well as use the manufacturers notes to flush out the campaign more. This book focuses on military and tactical weapons. Coverage in this area is as comprehensive as possible. It includes all major types in service today, as well as a few cutting-edge designs that are just emerging, as well as an array of sporting weapons. This book also talks about weapons of past wars, including various examples from the past two World Wars, the Korean War, and the American Civil War. The weapons are classified into categories, separated by chapter: Preamble: Manufactures and History. This preface talks about some of the various manufacturers in the book, and what firearms they are famous, or infamous, for creating, as well as a bit of history of the company. Chapter One: Handguns. This chapter includes both pistols and revolvers, of various types and sizes, and is split by their classifications. All pistols are compact, easily portable weapons. They are useful for a broad range of applications, including target shooting, hunting, personal protection, and police service. Pistols are generally small, which makes them the easiest firearms to conceal however, they lack the hitting power of rifles or shotguns and, as such, are of limited military use, generally being reserved for officers, or as primary weapons for those who do not normally carry a rifle. Chapter Two: Personal Defense Weapons. This Chapter includes everything from the smaller Machine Pistol, to the larger Sub-machine guns. These weapons generally pack more of a punch than their smaller pistol counterparts, by having a larger than a standard sidearm handgun, as well as by adding the ability of automatic fire of some type, or by firing a larger, heavier. These weapons are generally reserved for those that wish to have more firepower than a handgun, but don't quite need the noise and size of a full fledged rifle, or even a short barrel carbine. PDWs are popular with Counter-terrorist members, SWAT, and Tank crewmen for this use.

3 Chapter Three: Rifles. This chapter covers from the long-barreled, high-powered Anti-material weapons to the shortened, close range carbine rifle. Generally suited for everything from patrol work, to house clearing, to long range engagement, these weapons span both civilian, and military applications. They're popular with armies all over the world, and are often issued as such. Chapter Four: Shotguns. Shotguns describes large-bore weapons designed to fire a group of smaller projectiles with each shot. Shotguns are useful for close-in targets, but much less effective at long range; they tend to be used as specialty weapons for close combat, as well as for hunting large game. Because of their large bores and low firing pressure, shotguns are capable of firing a variety of special-purpose and exotic ammunition types. Chapter Five: Machine Guns. Machine Guns cover heavy weapons designed for sustained automatic fire. They are often fed by long belts of ammunition, which reduce the need to reload as often. All but the lightest are fitted with bipods for stability. Machine guns serve as support weapons, providing suppressive or covering fire for ordinary soldiers equipped with assault rifles. Chapter Six: Grenade Launchers, Rocket Launchers and Mortars. These weapons describes large weapons that fire explosive shells or rockets with an explosive payload. They are often large and heavy and, like machine guns, they are used to provide fire support, as well as take out armored targets or buildings from a long range distance. Like shotguns, there exist a large variety of specialty ammunition types. Grenade launchers are split into two groups: grenade launchers are designed to fit under the barrel of an assault rifle, creating a dualpurpose combination weapon systems, and Grenade Launchers capable of being used on their own, creating a stand alone weapon. Chapter Seven: New and Gunsmithing. This chapter outlines rules for more complete gunsmithing, as well as new types of ammunition and equipment, and their effects. Chapter Eight: Weapons in Use. This chapter talks about the firearms that are assigned to federal and state agents such as agent of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, U.S. Marshalls and the Drug Enforcement Administration, as well as the general weapons trends of various forces, both legal and illegal, and the general populace.

6 Preamble: Manufacturers Below listed is a list of manufacturers of firearms, and the histories behind the company. Accu-Tek Accu-Tek firearms are manufactured by Excell Industries, specializing in small.380 ACP backup handguns. Their firearms are generally low cost, perfect for those on a tight budget. Accuracy International Accuracy International is a specialist British firearms manufacturer, best known for their Arctic Warfare series of Sniper Rifles, which are some of the most highly prized precision rifles a. The Arctic Warfare Super Magnum sniper rifle currently holds the record for the longest confirmed kill. American Derringer American Derringer Corp is a Texas company, reviving the old style Remington.41 Over under rimfire derringers, and putting them into modern calibers, such as.38 Special and.357 Magnum. The Derringers are highly prized by collectors, as each one is crafted by hand. AMT Arcadia Machine and Tool, commonly abbreviated to AMT, was a firearms manufacturer from Irwindale, California. The company produced several weapons, often clones of existing firearms. Plagued by quality and reliability problems, the company went bankrupt and the assets and trademark were acquired by IAI (Irwindale Arms Incorporated). ArmaLite ArmaLite is the name of a small arms engineering facility founded in the early 1950s, and once associated with the Fairchild Engine and Airplane Corporation. ArmaLite was responsible for small arm designs that evolved into many of the infantry weapons in service worldwide today, including the M16 assault rifles and the M4 carbine. The original ArmaLite ceased all operations in the early 1980s, and ArmaLite's successor, ArmaLite, Inc. is currently located in Geneseo, Illinois. The company changed many hands, before landing in the hands of a former U.S. Army Ordnance officer, who now manufacturers a number of AR-15 and AR-10 based rifles, as well as a.50 Caliber Anti-material rifle. Astra Astra was a Spanish weapons manufacturer founded on July 17, 1908 under the name of Esperanza y Unceta by Juan Esperanza and Pedro Unceta. First located in the city of Eibar, the stronghold of the Basque arms industry, the company moved in 1913 to Guernica. They produced various copies of more famous guns, such as the Mauser Broomhandle and the Browning Vest pocket pistol. Barrett s Manufacturing Barrett s Manufacturing is an American manufacturer of firearms and ammunition. It was founded in 1982 by Ronnie Barrett for the single purpose of building semi-automatic rifles chambered for the powerful mm NATO (.50 BMG) ammunition, originally developed for and used in M2 Browning machine guns. Barrett began his work in the early 1980s and the first working rifles were available in 1982, hence the designation M82. Barrett designed every single part of the weapon personally and then went on to market the weapon and mass produce it out of his own pocket. He continued to develop his rifle through the 1980s, and developed the improved M82A1 rifle by Their most recognizable rifles are the Barrett M82 and the M95 Anti-material Rifles, firing the.50 BMG. They also have produces Assault Rifles and Machine guns.

7 Benelli Arms Benelli Arms is an Italian firearm manufacturer founded in 1967, located in Urbino, Italy, best known for high quality shotguns used by military, law enforcement and civilians all over the world. Particularly famous is the Benelli M3 12 gauge, used extensively by American SWAT teams, and the Benelli M4, used extensively by various organizations, including the USMC and the U.S. Army. Benelli also manufactures target pistols and shotguns for hunting and competition use, which are considered to be some of the best shotguns made. Pietro Beretta Beretta is an Italian firearms manufacturer founded in Their firearms are used worldwide for a variety of civilian, law enforcement, and military purposes. It is also known for manufacturing shooting clothes and accessories. Beretta is the oldest active firearms manufacturer in the world. Beretta is known for its broad range of fire arms: side-by-side shotguns, over-and-under shotguns, hunting rifles, assault rifles, submachine guns, lever and bolt-action rifles, single and double action revolvers and semi-automatic pistols. The model Beretta 92FS is the primary side arm of the United States Army, Marine Corps, Air Force, the United States Border Patrol and the United States Immigration and Naturalization Services, designated the M9 pistol, and was the former sidearm of various large Police Departments, including the Los Angeles Police Department and the Los Angeles Sherif's Department, as well as fictional organizations, such as the Raccoon City Police Department. Other Famous Models include their newer line of handguns, the Px4 series, it's Carbine counterpart, the Cx4, and the Machine pistol variant of the Beretta 92FS, the 93R. Beretta currently owns Benelli s, as well as their subsidiary, Stoeger. Bersa Bersa is an Argentine arms manufacturer located in the city of Ramos Mejia in Argentina. The company is well known among firearm enthusiasts for producing high quality guns at very reasonable prices and it spends very little money on advertisement. While strong and well built, nicely engineered, accurate, visually appealing and very reliable, Bersa handguns are not on par with the most prestigious brands (such as SIG or Beretta for example) when it comes to finishing. However, firearms made by such companies can cost as much as twice or more compared to a Bersa pistol in the same caliber and with similar features. The Argentine company is often influenced by the German firearms manufacturer Walther in the design of its handguns; the Thunder 22, 32 and 380 are basically clones of the famous Walther PP and PPK while the Thunder 9 and 40 are somewhat similar in appearance and some mechanical aspects to the Walther P88. Bond Arms Bond Arms Inc. is a firearms manufacturer located in Granbury, Texas. Bond arms was founded by longtime tool and die maker, Greg Bond. The company became incorporated as Bond Arms in 1995 and was licensed by the BATFE as a firearms manufacturer and dealer. Bond Arms is the largest manufacturer of derringers in the firearms industry, popular for having two-shot derringers in calibers from.22 LR and.25 ACP up to.410 Gauge and.45 Long Colt.

8 Browning Arms Company Browning Arms Company is a maker of firearms, bows and fishing gear. Founded in Utah in 1927, it offers a wide variety of firearms, including shotguns, rifles, pistols, and rimfire firearms and sport bows, as well as fishing rods and reels. The company was founded to market the sporting designs of John Browning, one of the world's most prolific firearms inventors. Nearly all of John Browning's designs have been manufactured by other companies, including Winchester, Colt, Remington, Fabrique Nationale de Herstal of Belgium, and Miroku. Browning is currently a fully owned subsidiary of Fabrique Nationale de Herstal(FN).Browning Arms Company is best known for the Browning BPS shotgun, the A-Bolt rifle, X-Bolt rifle, the -5 semi-automatic shotgun, the BAR semi-automatic rifle, and the Hi-Power 9mm pistol. Browning also manufactures a set of trap shotguns in the Cynergy series. Bushmaster s Bushmaster s International is a manufacturer and distributor of guns which is based in Madison, North Carolina in the United States. Bushmaster's product line revolves a semi-automatic pistol and rifle variants of the AR-15 design. Bushmaster is currently the best-selling brand for AR type firearms in the United States. Bushmaster is part of the Freedom Group, owned by Cerberus Capital Management. Calico Calico Light Weapons Inc. is a privately held firearms manufacturing company based in Cornelius, Oregon. The company was established in 1982 in Bakersfield, California, and released its first production weapon in Calico was sold in 1990 but remained in Bakersfield. The company was sold again in 1991 to the original concept designer, and in 1998 operations were moved to Sparks, Nevada, where replacement parts for existing weapons were produced. In 2006, Calico was sold once again, and moved to Hillsboro, Oregon, where full production of firearms resumed. Calico implemented a CNC machining process and upgraded materials used in manufacture. Additionally, there were minor redesigns of some production models to increase durability and reliability. Calico produces a line of pistols and pistol-caliber carbines which feature a top-mounted, helical-feed, high-capacity (50 or 100 ) that ejects spent shells from a port in the bottom. Charter Arms Charter Arms Co. is an American manufacturer of revolvers that are relatively inexpensive yet serviceable handguns. The original Charter Arms produced revolvers chambered in calibers.22 Long Rifle,.22 Winchester Magnum,.32 Long,.32 H&R Magnum,.327 Federal Magnum,.357 Magnum,.38 Special and.44 Special. The most famous revolvers manufactured by Charter Arms are the.44 Special Bulldog and.38 Special Bulldog Pug. Cobray The Cobray Company was a manufacturer of sub-machine guns and semi-automatic carbines, handguns and shotguns as well as non-lethal 37 mm launchers. They produced a Copy of the Armstel Striker 12, the Mac-10 and Mac-11, in both full and semi-automatic only firing modes Colt Colt's Manufacturing Company is a United States firearms manufacturer, whose first predecessor corporation was founded in 1836 by Samuel Colt. Colt is best known for the engineering, production, and marketing of firearms over the later half of the 19th and the 20th century. Colt's earliest designs played a major role in the popularization of the revolver and the shift away from earlier single-shot pistols. While Sam Colt did not invent the revolver concept, his designs resulted in the first very successful ones.

9 The most famous Colt products include the Walker Colt, Single Action Army or Peacemaker, and the Colt Python. John Browning worked for Colt for a time, and came up with a design for a semiautomatic pistol, which debuted as the Colt M1900 pistol and eventually evolved into the Colt M1911 pistol. Though they did not develop it, for a long time Colt was primarily responsible for all M16 rifle production, as well as of many derivative firearms. The most successful and famous of these are numerous M16 carbines, including the Colt Commando family, and the M4 carbine. CZ CZUB was established in 1936 as a branch of the Česká zbrojovka armament firm in the small Moravian town of Uherský Brod in Czechoslovakia, now in the Czech Republic. They manufacture a wide line of handguns and machine pistols, the most popular being the Cz 75 9mm pistol, as well as a number of Surplus Handguns, such as the CZ-82 9x18 PM pistol. Daewoo S&T Daewoo (formerly Daewoo Precision Industries) is a South Korean firearms and auto parts manufacturer founded in Its firearms equip most frontline units of the Republic of Korea Armed Forces. They produce licensed copies of the M1911 handgun, the USAS-12 automatic shotgun, and the K1,2, and 3 Series of Rifles. Royal Small Arms Factory Enfield The Royal Small Arms Factory (RSAF) was a UK government-owned rifle factory in the London Borough of Enfield in an area generally known as the Lea Valley. The factory produced British military rifles, muskets and swords from It closed in 1988, but some of its work was transferred to other sites. Popular and famous firearms inclued the FAL battle rifle, L85 Assault Rifle, Sten Submachine gun, and the Lee-Enfield Bolt action rifle. FN Fabrique Nationale d'herstal self identified as FN Herstal and often referred to as Fabrique Nationale or simply FN is a firearms manufacturer located in Herstal, Belgium. FN is a subsidiary of the Belgian Herstal Group, which also owns U.S. Repeating Arms Company (Winchester) and Browning Arms Company. FN Herstal is the parent company of two United States entities: FN Manufacturing and FNH USA. FN Manufacturing, located in Columbia, South Carolina, is the manufacturing branch of FN Herstal in the United States, producing firearms such as the M249 and M240 machine guns and M16 rifle, among others. FNH USA, located in McLean, Virginia, is the sales and marketing branch of FN Herstal in the United States. s designed and/or manufactured by FN include the Browning Hi-Power pistol, Five-seven pistol, FAL rifle, FNC rifle, F2000 rifle, P90 submachine gun, M2 Browning machine gun, MAG machine gun, and Minimi machine gun. FN Herstal's firearms are used by the armed forces of over 100 countries. Franchi Luigi Franchi S.p.A. is an Italian manufacturer of firearms, most notably various shotguns. Notable Franchi products include the military SPAS-12 and SPAS-15 and the sporting-type long-recoil action AL-48. Franchi are renowned for their semi-automatic shotguns and are a division of Benelli. Franchi remained a family business since its founding until 1987, when it was acquired by the industrial conglomerate Socimi, based in Milan; with the bankruptcy of Socimi in 1993, Franchi was acquired by the Beretta Holdings which is the current owner. Glock Glock Ges.m.b.H. (trademarked as GLOCK) is a weapons manufacturer headquartered in Deutsch-Wagram, Austria, named after its founder, Gaston Glock. While the company is best known for its line of striker-fired polymer-framed pistols, it also produces field knives, entrenching tools and apparel.

10 Glock handguns are used by armed forces and law enforcement organizations worldwide, including a majority of U.S. law enforcement agencies, such as the New York Police Department. Glock handguns are also very popular with civilians for personal protection and practical shooting, and the company sponsors a competitive shooting team which travels worldwide. Glock produces more than two dozen models of handguns in seven different calibers. H&K Heckler & Koch (HK) is a German defense manufacturing company that produces various small arms. Some of their products include the SA80, MP5 submachine gun, G3 automatic rifle, the G36 assault rifle, the HK 416, the MP7 personal defense weapon, the USP series of handguns, and the high-precision PSG1 sniper rifle. All firearms made by HK are named by a prefix and the official designation, with suffixes used for variants. HK has a history of innovation in firearms, such as the use of polymers in weapon designs and the use of an integral rail for flashlights on handguns. HK also developed modern polygonal rifling, noted for its high accuracy, increased muzzle velocity and barrel life. Not all of its technologically ambitious designs have translated into commercially successful products (for instance, the advanced but now abandoned G11 assault rifle, which fired caseless high-velocity ammunition). HK produces a whole range of small arms, from pistols to grenade launchers and machine guns. In its extensive product range, HK has used most of the operating systems for small arms: blowback operation, short-recoil, roller-delayed blowback, gas-delayed blowback, and gas operation. Hämmerli Hämmerli is a Swiss manufacturer of firearms aimed mostly at sport shooting. Their firearms are praised for their accuracy and ergonomics, but these come at a high price. Henry Repeating Arms Henry Repeating Arms is a firearms manufacturing company that leads in the manufacture of lever action firearms. Henry Repeating Arms takes its name from Benjamin Tyler Henry, the inventor who patented the first repeating rifle in The company also produces bolt action and pump-action rimfire rifles as well as a new generation of the AR-7 takedown rifle, now known as the Henry US Survival rifle, which was originally designed for the United States Air Force. The Henry Golden Boy is the company's signature model, featuring a Brasslight receiver and octagonal barrel. A larger caliber centerfire version is known as the Henry Big Boy. Hi-Point Hi-Point s is a firearms manufacturer based in Mansfield, Ohio. They manufacture low-cost pistols and carbines, in 9x19mm,.380 ACP,.40 S&W and.45 ACP Hi-Point. The semi-automatic pistols are polymer-framed and generally regarded as simple, inexpensive handguns, which trade-off aesthetics for lower manufacturing cost, and ruggedness. IMI Israel Military Industries Ltd. (IMI) is an Israeli weapons manufacturer. It manufactures firearms, ammunition and military technology mainly for Israeli security forces (especially Israel's army, the Israel Defense Forces), although its small arms are very popular throughout the world. Popular firearms include the world famous Desert Eagle family of handguns, the Uzi submachine gun, the Negev LMG, and the Galil and Tavor assault rifles.

11 Intratec Intratec was a firearm company based in Miami, Florida. The company's most famous product was the TEC- 9.Intratec began as Interdynamic USA, an offshoot of Swedish firearms manufacturer Interdynamic AB. Due to the lack of firearm market in Sweden, Interdynamic AB set up a subsidiary in the United States to sell the KG-9. Called Interdynamic USA, this company eventually became Intratec and continued to sell variants of KG-99 which was renamed to Tec-9. It went out of business in 2001 under pressure of lawsuits and the anti-gun movement. Popular firearms include the infamous Tec-9, and a pocket pistol called the Tec-38 Ithaca Gun Company The Ithaca gun company is a firearms manufacturers, of rifles and shotguns, based in Ithaca, New York. Ithaca became famous for building firearms based on expired Remington Patents, as well as their model of the M ACP handgun and M3 Grease gun for the United States During World War 2. Its 12-gauge shotguns were the standard used by the Los Angeles Police Department and New York Police Department, and are still in use today by some departments. Popular firearms include the various versions of the Ithaca 37 pump action shotgun and the M3 Grease Gun. Izhmash Izhmash is a Russian weapons manufacturer based in Izhevsk, founded in 1807 at the decree of Tsar Alexander I, and is now one of the largest corporations in its field. It manufactures the famous Kalashnikov series of assault rifle, along with a host of other Russian arms, including medium cannons, missiles, and guided shell. They have manufactured such iconic arms as the Mosin-Nagant bolt action rifle, the SKS, The Tokarev SVT-40, the Saiga seres of rifles and shotguns, and the entire series of AK Rifles, including the AK-47, AKM, AK-101, AK-103, and the AK-12. Izhevsk Izhevesk is a major russian firearms manufacturer founded in Izhevsk in 1942 for manufacturing small arms. After the end of World War II it continued producing firearms, both for military and hunting applications, and later high-tech weapons and civilian machinery. Notable and Popular firearms include the Baikal Shotguns and the Makarov pistol. Jiminez Arms/Bryco Arms/Jennings s Jimenez Arms, also known as "J.A.", is an American firearms manufacturer based in Henderson in Nevada. The company was started in August 2004 using the molds and machinery from bankrupt Bryco Arms and currently makes five models of firearm, the J.A.-NINE a, J.A.-380, J.A.-22, J.A.-32,and the J.A.-25, which are all low cost, affordable firearms. Kahr Arms Kahr Arms is an American small arms manufacturer specializing in compact and mid-size semi-automatic pistols chambered for popular cartridges, including.380acp, 9 mm Luger Parabellum,.40 S&W and.45 ACP. Kahr pistols feature polymer or stainless steel frames, single-stack, and double-action-only striker firing actions. Company headquarters is in Blauvelt, New York and the Kahr manufacturing facility is located in Worcester, Massachusetts. The Kahr K9 is a popular backup weapon with the New York City police officers, even to this day. Popular firearms include the aforementioned Kahr K9, and the K40, as well as their various polymer versions of their handguns, the PM Series. Kel-Tec Kel-Tec is a United States manufacturer of firearms based in Cocoa, Florida, the company has manufactures semi-automatic pistols, rifles and shotguns, touted as the third largest manufacturer of handguns in all of the united states. Notable firearms include the P-11, the Sub-2000, and the SU-16 Series of rifles, as well as the PLR- 16, a long range rifle based on the SU 16, and the PMR30 handgun, the RFB rifle and the KSG Shotgun.

12 Korth Korth is a manufacturer of high end revolvers, and autoloading handguns, made by renowned German gunmaker Willie Korth. Marlin firearms was issued a patten for their specialty MicroGroove rifling, which has multiple, small rifling grooves instead of the standard ballard or cut rifling. This has lead to their increased accuracy with factory ammunition, but on the downside, makes them less accurate with handloaded ammunition, because of the bullet diameter. But being as this is a.44 Magnum, the most powerful handgun in the world, and would blow your head clean off, you've got to ask yourself one question: Do I feel lucky? Well, do ya, punk? ~ Harry Callahan A handgun is a firearm designed to have the potential to be held and operated by one hand, although not necessarily used that way. This characteristic differentiates handguns as a general class of firearms from long guns such as rifles and shotguns (which are usually mounted against the shoulder). Major handgun subtypes are the revolver and pistol, and are split into various subtypes based on size and use. There are handguns that are available to suit nearly any budget. Low-cost models featuring simple operating systems, crude manufacturing, and lowquality materials are widely produced. while more reliable and sophisticated service weapons that are suitable for more active use form the middle of the market. At the high end are advanced custom pistols, produced for Olympic-class target shooting, exclusive private collections, or specialized forces, such as SWAT. Handguns differ from long guns in the fact that they are generally regarded as more personal weapons: The style, model, and even caliber, can tell quite a lot about a character, and they are generally selected by hand, rather than issued. Handgun selection generally mirrors personal preference out in combat, more so than long guns as a handgun is generally always worn, and only drawn when needed. They are also easier to conceal than a long gun, allowing for a seemingly unarmed appearance when worn with the correct holster and clothing. A handgun should always be chosen carefully, the character s personality, backstory, and preference should definitely have some sway and appearance in their choice. Revolvers A revolver is a repeating firearm that has a cylinder containing multiple chambers and at least one barrel for firing. Capacity for a revolver can be as little as 3 s, and as many as 10, but 5 and 6 cylinders are the most common. Revolvers predated semi-automatic pistols, praised in their time for their ability to fire multiple shots without reloading, nor resorting to having multiple barrels to do as such. Revolvers provide an advantage in the fact that a misfiring cartridge does not put a gunfighter out of commission; only a trigger pull is needed to advance to the next. Revolvers are also generally less complicated on an end user level, being easier to maintain and operate, but much harder to repair. Revolvers, however, usually have low capacities, when compared to autoloading pistols(the Highest capacity revolver at 10 s, is only the mid level for an autoloading pistol), and nearly all models are unable to effectively use suppressors. Revolvers themselves fall into various categories based on how they are cocked, and how they are loaded.

18 Single Action, Double Action and Double Action Only With a single-action revolver(sa), the hammer is manually cocked, usually with the thumb of the firing or supporting hand. This action advances the cylinder to the next and locks the cylinder in place with the chamber aligned with the barrel. The trigger, when pulled, releases the hammer, which fires the in the chamber. To fire again, the hammer must be manually cocked again. This is called "single-action" because the trigger only performs a single action, of releasing the hammer. Because only a single action is performed and trigger pull is lightened, firing a revolver in this way allows most shooters to achieve greater accuracy. Additionally, the need to cock the hammer manually acts as a safety. The Colt Paterson Revolver, the Walker Colt, the Colt's Dragoon and the Colt Single Action Army pistol of the American Frontier era are all good examples of this system. A single action revolver can be used to perform fanning attacks, where the supporting hand rapidly cocks the hammer back and the primary hand simply holds the trigger down, allowing for a volley of lead at a cost of accuracy. Single action Revolvers cost +1 additional Combat Point when performing a Single shot attack. All Single action firearms gain a +1 Attack Bonus on all single shot and potshot attacks. With a double-action(da) revolver, the stroke of the trigger pull generates three actions: the hammer is pulled back to the cocked position, the cylinder begins to be indexed to the next, and then the hammer is released to strike the firing pin. Thus double action means that a cocking action separate from the trigger pull is unnecessary; and every trigger pull will result in a complete cycle. This allows uncocked carry while also allowing draw-and-fire using only the trigger. A longer and harder trigger stroke is the trade-off, but this drawback can also be viewed as a safety feature, as the gun is safer against accidental discharges from being dropped. Most double-action revolvers may be fired in two ways. The first way is single-action, exactly the same as a single-action revolver; the hammer is cocked with the thumb, which indexes the cylinder, and when the trigger is pulled, the hammer is tripped. The second way is double action. Double Action firearms are considered semi-automatic firearms. They can be cocked back for 1 Combat Point, gaining a +1 Attack Bonus to single shot and potshot attacks. Certain revolvers, called double action only(dao), lack the latch that enables the hammer to be locked to the rear, and thus can only be fired in the double action mode. With no way to lock the hammer back, DAO designs tend to have bobbed or spurless hammers, and may even have the hammer completely covered by the revolver's frame. These are generally intended for concealed carrying, where a hammer spur could snag when the revolver is drawn. The potential reduction in accuracy in aimed fire or the ability to perform a fanning attack is offset by the increased capability for concealment. Double Action Only firearms are considered semi-automatic firearms. They give no penalty or bonus to attacks. Front Loading Revolvers The first revolvers were front loading, and were a bit like muskets in that the powder and bullet were loaded separately. These were caplocks or "cap and ball" revolvers, because the caplock method of priming was the first to be compact enough to make a practical revolver feasible. When loading, each chamber in the cylinder was rotated out of line with the barrel, and charged from the front with loose powder and an oversized bullet. Next, the chamber was aligned with the ramming lever underneath the barrel. Pulling the lever would drive a rammer into the chamber, which sealed it and held the ball and powder securely in place. Finally, the user would place percussion caps on the nipples on the rear face of the cylinder.

19 After each shot, a user was advised to raise his revolver vertically while cocking back the hammer so as to allow the fragments of the spent percussion cap to fall out safely. Otherwise, the fragments could fall into the revolver's mechanism and jam it. Caplock revolvers were also vulnerable to "chain fires", wherein hot gas from a shot ignited the powder in the other chambers. This could be prevented by sealing the chambers with cotton, wax, or grease. Loading a cylinder in this manner was a slow and awkward process and generally could not be done in the midst of battle. Some soldiers solved this by carrying multiple revolvers in the field. Another solution was to use a revolver with a detachable cylinder design. These revolvers allowed the shooter to quickly remove a cylinder and replace it with a full one, much like how modern day pistols use. Fixed Cylinder Revolver In many of the first generation of cartridge revolvers (especially those that were converted after manufacture), the pin on which the cylinder revolved was removed, and the cylinder taken from the gun for loading. Later models used a loading gate at the rear of the cylinder that allowed one cartridge at a time to be accessed for loading, while a rod under the barrel could be pressed backwards to extract the fired case. Most revolvers using this method of loading are single-action revolvers. The removable-cylinder design is employed in some modern "micro-revolvers" (usually in.22 caliber), in order to simplify their design. These weapons are small enough to fit in the palm of the hand. The loading gate on the original Colt designs (and on nearly all single-action revolvers since, such as the famous Colt Single Action Army) is on the right side, which was done to facilitate loading while on horseback; with the revolver held in the left hand, the cartridges can easily be ejected and loaded with the right. Since the cylinder in these revolvers is firmly attached at the front and rear of the frame, and since the frame is typically full thickness all the way a, fixed cylinder revolvers are inherently strong designs. Because of this, many modern large caliber hunting revolvers tend to be based on the fixed cylinder design. Fixed cylinder revolvers can fire the strongest and most powerful cartridges, but at the price of being the slowest to load and cannot use speedloaders for loading, as one chamber is exposed at a time to the loading gate. Top Break Revolvers The next method used for loading and unloading cartridge revolvers was the top break design. In a top-break revolver, the frame is hinged at the bottom front of the cylinder. Releasing the lock and pushing the barrel down exposes the rear face of the cylinder. In most top-break revolvers, this act also operates an extractor that pushes the cartridges in the chambers back far enough that they will fall free, or can be removed easily. Fresh s are then inserted into the cylinder. The barrel and cylinder are then rotated back and locked in place, and the revolver is ready to fire. Top break revolvers can be loaded more rapidly than fixed-frame revolvers, especially with the aid of speedloaders. However, this design is much weaker and cannot handle high pressure s. While this design is mostly obsolete today, supplanted by the stronger yet equally convenient swingout design, manufacturers have begun making reproductions of late 19th century designs for use in cowboy action shooting.
