Threat Awareness Train for the unexpected
Asymmetric warfare, combined with total disrespect for human life shows it s ugly face in many places of this world. Most recently military personal face deadly threats in many places around the world. Soldiers, as well as civilians, men, women and children fall victim to an aggressive terror which has developed from hopelessness, poverty and religious fundamentalism. Train the best for the unexpected worse Danger, Threat and Uncertainty always have been present on the battlefield. COMET - the world leader. In today s operations regular troops encounter insurgents who ruthlessly and merciless make use of modern technology especially of cellphone technology. In addition they seem to draw on unlimited supplies of every kind of explosive from hidden stockpiles. Their intention is to inflict as many casualties on their opponents with as little risk as possible. They want to spread terror as wide as possible to break the will to resist. To resolve this situation many measures have to be taken. For military personal it is of utmost importance to be trained to be aware of a multitude of threats which more and more develop in context with Urban Operations (see below). COMET is the world leader in providing launchers and ammunition to simulate weapon effects in all areas of live training as in: Force-on-Force Training, Force-on-Target Training, Threat Awareness Training. COMET builds on their fielded and materialreleased pyrotechnic ammunition families. COMET suggests to use their Weapon-Effect and Threat-Simulators to support realistic, challenging and interesting training to prepare troops for dangers they are sure to encounter. 3 IED-Simulator Carrying case 1 Carrying case 2 IED-Simulator receiver and transmitter COMET s Standard IED-Simulator is contained in two carrying cases. Content of Carrying cases It is a Stand-Alone training device. Stand- Alone means that this device is ready to be used at any time at any place in the world with little or no time for preparation needed. It will not interfere with existing, overarching high-level architecture training systems. The standard IED-Simulator is intended to be used at squad, platoon and company level. Two standard IED-Sets support all types of training, where action is to be simulated at two different places at almost the same time.the IED- Simulator loaded with M30 and/or M31-typeammunition is HERO-safe (hazards of electromagnetic radiation to ordnance), which means that an unintended ignition is not possible. Carrying case 1 contains: IED-Transmitter, 8 buttons; IED-Receiver, 8 plug-in s; Power Supply with battery charger. Carrying case 2 contains: 4 Firing Units (FU's); 2 Splitters ; 8 Adapter-Rings for ammunition M30 and M31-type (4 each); 4 Cables, (standard length 8 m); 1 Adapter to connect 2-pin wires with 4- pin-cables. 3
Practical demonstration during symposium levels of fidelity IV IED-Simulator The Transmitter allows a stand-off distance of up to 300 m. The Receiver can control not only the Firing Unit (FU) which are added but also a variety of different launching devices like MGSS, DIFCUE and ManPAD-Simulator. The two Splitters split the firing signal electrically, which means that two FU s can be initiated at the same time, thus making the simulated effects even more powerful. The adapter which connects two-pin wires with 4-pin wires creates the possibility to fire any type of pyrotechnic ammunition even legacytype ammunition with our remote-controlreceiver. This capability makes more simulation variants possible, thus making the training even more interesting. Ammunition to be used with this IED-Simulator is COMET s MECS (Multiple Effects Cartridge System)-Ammunition. Samples of that system are the Main Gun Signature Simulator M30 and Direct/Indirect Fire Cue M31A1 Stars, both type-classified and material-released by the US-Army. COMET s Standard IED-Simulator has been designed as an independent training system for low level training (squad to company-level) of all facets of urban operations, to include fight against strongholds in and outside of houses, convoy-training, security check-point-training, indirect fire simulation and so forth. This IED-Simulator, packed in two carrying cases (total weight of both cases together is 17.5 kg), is highly mobile and can be used everywhere in the world with little time necessary for preparation. Centerpieces of this IED-Simulator are: Wireless Transmitter: with 8 buttons to initiate up to 8 different pyrotechnic simulator devices; range up to 300 meters; each transmitter is married with a specific receiver. This way it is not possible to initiate a trigger-signal with any other receiver which might be around within the training environment. Receiver: which can receive up to 8 different trigger-signals. Each trigger-signal is to activate a different pyrotechnic simulator device which is cable-connected with EMV-shielded cables to the receiver. This safely prevents unintended ignition of ammunition. Power-supply: for receiver with battery-charger and cable. The flexibility of COMET s IED-Simulator is characterized by the fact that many existing simulating devices can be connected to the receiver. 4 Comet - Threat Awareness
IED-Simulator Receiver with PDA A center-piece of COMET s standard IED- Simulator Set is the Wireless Receiver which offers the capability to connect up to eight pyrotechnic simulating devices to it. There are applications within training for urban operations where there is a need to have more than one receiver in operation. Under this assumption one would need the same number of transmitters for a given number of receivers since for safety reasons they are married to each other. These situations might occur, where and when training takes places in and around instrumented installations, fixed or mobile and when high op-tempo is a must. This means that situations might change frequently and unexpectedly and exercises could take turns which are not anticipated by ex-control, but need to be responded to. COMET s PDA in such cases is the solution of choice. It offers an unsurpassed flexibility. This PDA can control up to 12 different receivers (with each receiver controlling up to 8 simulating devices!). Switching from one receiver to another is just a few mouse-clicks and a few seconds away. Only one PDA in your hand instead of 12 transmitters. of them with the capability of simulating more than just one effect. Preparation of a PDA is easy. Using general purpose-laptops and commercial software makes programming of drawings, buildings and map-sketches and transfer of this information to the PDA easy. Once this information is stored, the location of simulating devices and/or pyrotechnic ammunition is electronically added. When all the devices are switched hot than the effect needed simply is selected by touching the PDA s display and finally initiated by pressing two buttons simultaneously which are located beneath the display. Technical parameters: Range: Size and weight: Safety: Power Supply: 300 meters 2 cases each: 500x400x170mm = 17.5 kg HERO 12 V rechargeable battery Receiver Power Supply Unit Firing Units (FU's) This way the instructor/controller can follow any direction and development an exercise might take and always be ahead with realistic simulation of Battlefield Effects using up to 96 PDA (Personal Digital Assistant) 5
MECS Multiple Effects Cartridge System MECS - Multiple Effects Cartridge System from COMET describes two distinct groups of effect simulating ammunition. The first group is used to simulate the effects of a main gun being fired namely flash, bang and smoke. Applications of this simulator can be found with medium and large calibre guns worldwide. The best known representative of this group is the pyrotechnic Main Gun Signature- Simulator, M30 (US). All MGSS-Simulators use a M30-type cartridge. The second group is used to simulate hits achieved by direct and/or indirect fire weapons. Hits from weapons firing hard bullets may appear like "stars" bouncing off from a hard target. The best known simulator from this group is the Direct Indirect Fire Cue-Simulator, M31A1 STARS (US). Other hits can cause flash, bang, smoke and burning effects. Depending on user definitions hits which cause a mobility kill, weapon kill, etc. can be simulated by using coloured smokes which are available in many versions. Main colours are yellow, orange, white, blue and black. Other versions are available. Another type of hit simulation uses a simulator which makes realistic effects such as flash, bang and a cloud of smoke up in the air- in safe distance from soldiers, as from an AirBurst detonation from an incoming artillery shell or Mortar Grenade with proximity fuze. All hit-simulators use the M31-type cartridge. COMET s standard IED-Simulator uses both ammunition types. By using corresponding adapter-rings all FU's can use either M30 or M31-type ammunition or a mix of both. M30- type simulators could be used to simulate detonations from Improvised Explosive Devices and M31- type Black Smoke simulators could be used to simulate a follow-on burning effect. Other combinations are possible and depend on national training philosophy and principles. MECS cartridges are safe, easy to handle and benign to the environment. They are produced on an automated production line which guarantees the highest level of quality at low prices for our customers. Additional non pyrotechnic audio-visual signals are available. Green smoke Effect of M30 MECS Cartridges Visual Signal 6 Comet - Threat Awareness
ManPAD- Simulator Launcher adapted Firing of a ManPAD-Simulator ManPAD-Simulator effectively simulates the effects (blast, bright light and smoke trail for about 2 seconds plus strong plume in the IR-spectrum of light) during the launch-phase of many types of portable missiles. Shoulder-launched, man-portable ground to air missiles are a serious threat to helicopters and other low flying aircraft which support urban operations on a regular basis. COMET s ManPAD-Simulator is ideally suited to train pilots in their awareness of this threat. The ManPAD-Simulator can be used: as a single-shot Stand-Alone Simulator; as a multiple-launch, remote-controlled by COMET s PDA; as an add-on to any MGSS and/or DIFCUE using an adapter to launch the ManPADammunition. acquisition in a Force-on-Force-Training scenario. The ManPAD-ammunition, once launched simulates a typical launch blast, a bright light and a good white smoke trail for about 2 seconds. In addition a unique plume in the IRspectrum of light is available for the same time. Two seconds of flight time correspond to a range of about 100 m, depending on elevation. The simulator consumes itself during flight. The cartridge remains in the launching device. This means that no debris are left over which would endanger the aircraft and which would damage the environment. COMET s ManPAD-Simulator is an effective, low-cost training device which enriches realistic training at all levels. The ManPAD-Simulator can also be adapted to Anti-Tank-Weapon-Simulators and to MLRS- Launchers to make them visible for target Threat Awareness 7
