3 RACING REPORT 2008 has been another exceptional year. Our total entries hit a record 602, an increase of 16% over last year and the 6th consecutive year that we have shown an increase. Also, for the first time in the 5 years that I have been Time Trial Secretary we have a winner in all of our Best All Rounder categories - Senior, Lady, Veteran, Junior and Espoir. Our 3-up kicked the season off in the best possible way with a full field of 120, a very rare occurrence on Kentish roads. But promoter Ted Hill had a lot to contend with! Operation stack on the M20 enforced a last minute change to Romney Marsh and the notoriety of this course remained unscathed as the riders faced torrential rain throughout. Despite the conditions the VC Elan - Harry Perry Cycles trio of Neil Archibald, Gary Birch and Phil Bull came home in a creditable Your Time Trial Secretary promoted the next event, the Molash 25, but he had to do it from afar on the morning of the event as my recent hip replacement did not allow me to travel by car. So my thanks go to all those who rallied round in my absence to ensure the smooth running of the event. Next up was Greame Moir's 10 on Harrietsham and thankfully their was no repeat of operation stack. But following the problem that we had with Hollingbourne VH in recent years we changed the HQ to Lenham Community Centre and it proved to be a very suitable venue. The event made it 3 wins out of 3 for Phil Bull in a full minute ahead of Steve Castle. Third place went to Tim Bayley of the newly-affiliated Arctic Premier RT. Our first 50 on the Marsh was in the very capable hands of Jim Hollands, a first-time promoter for the KCA, and what a splendid job he made of it. We encountered our first road-works problem of the season, with some temporary lights on the run down to East Guldeford. But thanks to some deft marshalling from the Rye and District Wheelers CC all of the riders got through with no problem. Kevin Tye was a clear winner in , a time good enough for him to take the 50-mile Trophy. After a year's absence I took on the 100 again, but only on the understanding that obtaining the marshals and helpers would be a joint effort by the Committee. And they responded magnificently as several comments were made at the HQ on the excellence of the marshalling. Garry Banfield laid the foundation for his BAR victory with an excellent on a very tough morning. Despite the disappointing entry for Chris Bax's 10 those that did ride were very enthusiastic about the Fowlmead Circuit where riders can enjoy their racing in an environment that is totally free of traffic and pot-holes. Malcolm Whitehead's time of secured first place in both the Scratch and Veteran's categories. Finding this to be an excellent venue in which to incorporate their Club 10 Championship, Medway Velo Club turned out in force and took 2nd place (Robert Kennison), fastest Junior (Joe Tucker) and fastest team (Kennison, Jayson Weale and Tucker). So, it's on to the 12-hour and Esther's magnificent 25th, where she and her team gave us another faultless promotion. Garry Banfield was a decisive winner to clinch the 2008 Kent Championship. Much speculation has been made throughout the year regarding the future of the 12 and Kent Cycling Association can assure you that the 2009 date has been booked and, subject to a satisfactory and safe course being available, it will go ahead. Immediately following the 12-hour is the Roy Enfield 50, promoted by Mike Hawkins. By mid-august we would normally expect to at least see a glimpse of summer. But this year's summer proved to be a total write-off and the event started in wet and not too warm conditions. VC Elan - Harry Perry Cycles chalked up their fourth win of the season with Gary Birch returning Our final event, Ian Ferrell's 25 on Thanet Way, gave us the best conditions that we have enjoyed all year. On a very calm morning Kevin Tye recorded his 2nd win of the season in a course record of and led in a total of 18 sub-hour rides. One of the highlights of the season was the re-emergence of our lady riders, led by the immortal Carole Gandy. Right from the start, where we fielded 6 ladies teams in the 3-up, female riders have given us an average of 10% of the total entry of each event.
