2 Text and photos by Michael and William Ramsey. Helicopter Tuesday morning opened up to the distant sound of sheet metal being played in place of a dodge ball. Although the storm system and strong wetness was only skirting the north side of Delaware County, the bolts of lightning came over to say hello frequently. Our master, Craig Bradley, held off on the start of the day until the Doppler radar confirmed the activity was at least 25 miles away. A memorial service will be held this afternoon for the pop-up tents left overnight that fell to the winds. Welcome to the AMA Nationals! Here s that update we promised you on that Team USA raffle. Manager of the team, Tim Diperi, has actually a lot of goodies donated for the travel needs of the three team members yet to be determined. The O.S. 55 Special is one, plus Tim has a sample of the yet-to-be-announced in the USA Futaba GY-701 gyro to raffle. You need to be at the IRCHA Jamboree to win these prizes because the drawing will be held this Saturday night. Those adorable boys, William and Jacob Ramsey, running around the AMA site selling tickets for the raffle will be back again in the afternoon and this weekend to take more of your money; it s for a good cause, plus they re very good at doing it. 3 James Haley is flying in Class I. Class I pilot Andy Panoncillo from Muncie, Indiana. Class I pilot James Gus Petriats, Martinsville, Indiana. Its $5 per ticket, but $20 for five, so buy $100 worth and you ll really be in the running. The FAI team will have more raffle items to offer after IRCHA, so watch the Web site for details. Looks like Nick Maxwell is in strong contention for a Team USA seat this year. Obviously the participation of Japan Team member Shinya Kunii is making an impression and raising the bar. I swear that nobody on in the pits talks while he s putting his round down for the judges. I was impressed. Hey guys, go for it! Two rounds of everything were handled in the extreme heat yesterday. Man, was it hot out there like flying in sauna. The electric helicopters seemed to maintain power in the conditions, but the nitro mixers were a little down, which is typical. All the pilots registered for the Team Trials are flying electric; maybe that tells us something Today we re looking at getting another two rounds in but they ll have to work for it. Scattered thunderstorms are all over the area. FAI pilots will fly a round of the Preliminary schedule in the morning, then move on to the Final schedule. We ll be over at the Scale site also to see what s going on over there. I wonder what surprises lay ahead? Today is also the start of the IRCHA Jamboree.
