Bee Talk Extra October 2013 HBA Newsletter via Chairman: Charles Oliver-Bellasis charles@cajob.co.uk Honorary Secretary: Pippa Barker pippabarker@aol.com Honorary Treasurer: Jim Stuart pearity@lemonia.org This is really the Honey Show edition but just a quick reminder that there is Only One Month to go to the HBA Annual Convention on Saturday 16 th November at Sparsholt College, Stockbridge road, Winchester SO21 2NF Registration and Refreshments from 8.00am A wide-ranging programme of lectures and workshops starts at 9.00a.m You have been sent the programme by or check Tickets 15 Available from your own Association Honorary Secretary or Convention Secretary Janice Roper phone: janroper22@talktalk.net A very happy Blue Ribbon Winner, once again won Best in Show this year for two jars of beautiful light honey. The Trophy The Bellaire s Medal - was presented by Mary Dartnall, a Vice President of HBA and for many years HBA Confectionery Judge. It was lovely to see Mary and Bill back among us not judging but presenting trophies to happy winners.

For the first time the Hampshire Honey Show was a weekend event with the show staged and Judged on Saturday and the trophies presented on Sunday. As a public education event, HBA staged both the Honey Show and Information Displays in the grounds. Gazebos were hired, equipment gleaned and volunteers persuaded to give up part, or in some cases, most of their weekend to help set-up, man and then clear up. As organiser I would like to thank all who helped make the weekend a success by entering, volunteering over the weekend and even taking pictures and writing copy for this magazine! Pippa Barker HBA Hon Sec Copy and Pictures by Penny Adams, Petersfield BKA Being held at Sir Harold Hillier s Arboretum meant that the show was in a perfect setting and weren t we lucky with the weather! This meant that there could be displays outside which proved very popular with the visitors to the garden. Stewards from the different associations were kept very busy with the many and varied questions from old and young alike Sales of honey were steady I thought the colourful trail of beerelated facts leading to the longest herbaceous border in Europe were an excellent idea. They were popular with the children and made their day out that bit more interesting.

Following the bee-trail to the bee-loud border the longest in Europe! The Association stands were well presented with displays on wax and swarming by Petersfield members, Education by HBA Ed Sec Jean Frost, Equipment both new and old by Fleet and Portsmouth BKA s, bee plants by Romsey BKA Caring for bees by Meon valley BKA and Association information by New Forest BKA. Andover BKA provided a virtual hive and, Mike Lambert, past President of HBA loaned his incredible display of scale model beehives which fascinated young and old alike.

On Sunday afternoon Hillier Education Officer Carla was kept very busy making bees with visiting children and at one point was overheard explaining to one little boy (impressing his sister with his knowledge) that, although bees did indeed swallow nectar and regurgitate it as honey it was neither bee poop nor bee sick!!

The Honey Show was well attended with all but the Junior Classes represented. Honey & wax judges, Alan Brown & Alan Woodward, both from Yorkshire, were complimentary of the high standard of exhibits particularly praising the light honeys as the best they had judged. The sunshine on Sunday meant the honey jars reflected sparkling light and were very impressive. The wax exhibits, again, were to a high standard and there were helpful hints from the cake judge Margaret Williams for those who put into this class. Mary Dartnall, long our Confectionery Judge, presented the trophies assisted by HBA Chairman Charles Oliver-Bellasis. Once again one participant walked away with nearly all the cups but this year it was not but his protégé a very surprised and happy. Show Manager Debbie Burton (glimpsed above in red) was ably assisted by her son Tex Garbutt, and thanks must go to them and to Pippa Barker, Hampshire BKA secretary, for organising the whole event. All in all a successful and entertaining show for both participants and the unsuspecting visitors and the change at the top might give others encouragement to challenge this year s big winners in 2014.
