1 2018 Toronto and District Championships June 2 and 3, 2018 Commentary by Chris Brownhill: This, folks, is a really old contest that has been going on since 1961, although it is somewhat smaller nowadays due to the many changes that have taken place in our hobby/sport. In the old days it might have attracted up to one hundred entries, but the early Sixties were the golden age of model airplanes as far as I am concerned, and we will probably never see that intensity of competition ever again! However, it is still fun to keep doing it year after year, and remembering the good times we have had over the years while flying in this event! This year we were favoured with fairly decent weather which allowed us to get all of the events done within the appointed time. Saturday morning looked to be a bit breezy for the Old Time Scale, and Fun Scale events, but the wind slackened off enough to allow us to get some fairly decent flights, and some very close results were recorded, with a few almost photo finishes at the wire. The judges, Paul Emmerson, and Keith Morgan were kept busy keeping the scores, and judging the models, and we thank them for their excellent efforts. 1
2 In the combat circle, 80 MPH (Speed Limit) was being flown, and the usually expected carnage did not disappoint. The Combat model makers were being rewarded with fresh orders for new airplanes to replace the ones lost in the melee. Thanks to Brad LaPointe (Combat CD), and the cut judges, Stuart Henderson, and Peter Hanson, for running the meet successfully. Later in the afternoon, the LA.15 Sport Goodyear models made their appearance, and some colourful racing took place in order to continue an old tradition that goes back to the original meet held back in 1961 when Rat Racing was the order of the day! The last event was Old Time Stunt on Saturday which always attracts an array of Ringmasters, Vikings, and Flying Comedians to the competition. The wind was certainly less benevolent by this time of day, but all the entrants manned up, and got the event done with no damage, or casualties. 2
3 Sunday again promised to be both windy and rainy, but we were lucky again, as none of the really awful weather materialized until after the events finished by mid-afternoon. On Sunday s schedule were the two Stunt events, Profile and Precision. These were flown under mostly light winds, until the breeze picked up later in the morning for the last couple of attempts. Len Bourel lost his famous Big Yellow Taxi profile stunter when fuel ran out in the four-leaf clover, with the usual result from being overhead when the engine stops! No other models were damaged, which couldn t be said for those flying F2B (FAI Combat) on the grass circle! Here, many crashes and near misses were recorded, but it was very exciting to watch, and the spectators that happened to be around were again delighted. So another T&D Championships goes into books. Although our numbers are getting thinner, the Control Line competitors I am sure will want to do it all again next year! 3
