2 The Baja SAE competitions are held each spring with teams from more than 100 colleges and universities throughout the world. The 2011 competitions will be held in Alabama, Kansas, and Illinois.

3 What: Baja SAE Birmingham will include the water specialty event. In addition there will be design, cost, acceleration, land maneuverability, hill climb, and suspension and traction Who:57 Teams from US, Mexico, Canada, and as far away as South Korea When: Friday- Sunday, April Where: e: Stony Lonesome e OHV Park near Cullman, AL Organizers : Primary Organizers coming from the SAE Alabama Professional Section and UAB

4 All Baja vehicles must pass a rigorous technical inspection before they are permitted to compete. Once a vehicle has passed technical inspection, it must remain in as approved condition throughout the competition. Repairs must be made with identical parts.

5 Students present their design work to be judged in Originality, Innovation, Craftsmanship Suspension, Steering, Brakes Structural Design, Operator Comfort, Mass Production Powertrain, Serviceability, Floatation Each category gets 4 minutes

6 In addition each team submits a 10 page design report in April which is judged prior to the competition. The cost report is a spreadsheet format with cost categories for Engine, Transmission, Drivetrain, Steering, Suspension, Frame, Brakes, Safety, Electrical, Fasteners, and competition specific. Each category includes parts as well as manpower and manufacturing cost.

13 4 hour timed race to test endurance. Goal is to endurance complete as many laps as possible.

17 Event Cost Generally a Baja event costs between $80,000 and $100,000 to host. A portion of that is received from SAE International from the team registration fees. The rest is raised through sponsorships from local industry. Expenses include Tents/ Furniture ~ $5,000 Course/ Event Construction ~$20, Safety Equipment and Personnel $10,000 Food ~ $30,000 Disposal ~ $2000
