3 SCAMPS NEWS by Kevin Sherman (Substituted by Daniel Heinrich) Substitute Editor Greetings to all and a Happy New Year. As most of you know Kevin had some medical issues that took him out of commission for a while and asked me to fill in for this month on the newsletter. I am happy to say that he is on the mend and the prognosis looks good. David Baker passes It is all too often anymore that we hear about one of our own passing away. I received an early in January noting the passing of David Baker. The following is what Mike Myers had to say. David Baker was a modeler with a great deal of energy and enthusiasm. Although he was an Englishman, he'd lived in New Jersey for a time in the late 50's or early 60's and then returned to England. He got the OT or "vintage" modeling bug sometime in the mid 1970's and was one of the prime organizers, movers and shakers etc in setting up SAM 35--the first English SAM Chapter. He wrote the club newsletter. He and a couple of his friends bought modeling supplies in bulk and sold them to other OT modelers who didn't have a source for such things. Somewhere along the line there was a schism between David and some of the other then leaders of SAM 35--so David left SAM 35 and formed a new chapter SAM Again, he wrote the club newsletter, the Clarion and again was a tireless promoter of all things SAM. He actively promoted a series of Anglo American 50th Anniversary Wakefield Contests--those ran from about 1983 to 1989 or so; in alternate years English modelers came to Southern California to fly Vintage Wakefield at Taft--and then the next year American modelers went to England to fly. Sal Taibi, Jim Adams, Chet Lanzo, Tom McCoy and many others from Southern California and the East Coast participated in one or more of those Anglo American contests. David was also a frequent attendee at SAM Champs in the US. But David's biggest contribution to old time modeling in England may been his securing the right to use the Middle Wallop Airfield for free flight flying on several weekends each year. Those of us who have been to Middle Wallop for the SAM European Free Flight Champs that have been held there since ~1990 know that it can be a modeler's paradise. David was one of the first members of the SAM Hall of Fame--an honor he richly deserved. There's much more that could be said about what David did for SAM and for OT modeling, but it's probably best to just say that he was a very dear friend to many of us who will miss him very much. Mike Myers Get Ready for our Haggart/Bowden If you watch the contest calendar you know that our Bowden meet is coming up on the 1 st of February. This is a great excuse to bring out those models that do not necessarily make it in the contest category but are a lot of fun to fly. One thing to remember, the SCAMPS are an old ruler club so as long as the model meets the cross section and weight requirements you can fly it in the Bowden event. Last year I flew my Dakota ballasted up to 9 ounces. Those who were there remember the excitement when it looped on takeoff and almost took off my head. Never seen a big guy drop so fast I will bet! Remember, Bowden models must ROG but there is no limit on engine run. Also another rules clarification, period diesel engines by SAM rules are classified as spark ignition and my dad has allowed them for Bowden. Last Day of the Year at Perris by Bernie Crowe It was a day marked Holiday on the donut schedule, but the Club turned out in force for what had to be one of the nicest flying days we d had all year. The skies were clear, the temperature was balmy once the sun was up, and best of all there was only a breath of breeze all morning. The snow-capped mountains to the east completed the scene with a nice
4 backdrop. About twenty-five Club members showed up, and were outnumbered only by the donuts! Hal Wightman and Ted Firster both showed up with boxes of donuts, and Ted had even turned round at the field entrance and gone to get another dozen when he saw how many cars there were! For most of us it was the first time on the field since the extensive rains in the run up to Christmas. The field was soft in places and a little muddy underfoot, but was otherwise quite usable. The creek had a good deal of water in it, but this wasn t a problem for most of us because the drift was low enough that most flights landed on the east side. The only down side was the news that Kevin Sherman was in the hospital and scheduled for surgery later that day. We all wished him luck and put our best flights up for him. It was good to see Tom Carman out there with his wife and brother too, enjoying the weather and the camaraderie, and flying his 1/2A ship. The low drift meant that several flights strafed the flight line on landing. I got a mitt full of Milon s Ohlson 60 powered Albatross as it made a threatening beeline for me. There s nothing like a 165lb (OK, I exaggerate!) airplane heading for your models and your car to turn you into a Cy Young player! A few others made exciting low passes over the cars and kept everyone alert. Skip Robb put in a couple of fine flights with his Delameter twin pusher, while Bob Goldie s brand new Red Buzzard showed a lot of promise. Both Jeff Carman and Ron Thomas were putting up awesome flights in power, Jeff with his 1000 in 2 Texan and Ron VTOing his Zeek (Ed. Note: The model was not identified but that is what the picture looks like to me). Al Richardson showed up late with a re-incarnation of his 1954 Unlimited Rubber ship, Long Shot, and set about trimming it. Nice looking plane. Hal Wightman decided to put up one last attempt at the Gollywock postal contest, but the thermal gods weren t with him and so George Walters 15+ minute flight still stands. A great way to end a year that has had its down moments for many of us, and a chance to look forward to a better 2009! 2009 SCAMPS Club Contest Calendar by Bernie Crowe Hey fellow SCAMPers! Welcome to 2009, and another grueling round of fiercely contested aero-modeling face-offs, aka Club Competitions! You may have seen the contest schedule in the January issue of Gas Lines, but since 2009 is now actually here, here s the schedule again to remind you. Date Rubber Power CD Jan 14 OT Large Rubber (comb) 1/2A - D Gas (Mod) Bernie Crowe Feb 11 P-30 OT ABC Pylon TBD Mar 18 Coupe F1G 1/2A - D Gas (Nos) TBD Apr 15 OT Small Rubber (comb) OT ABC Fuselage TBD May 13 Jimmy Allen / Comml Rubber Electric Q/E/G* TBD Jun 17 4oz Wake / 8oz Wake 1/2A Texaco TBD Jul 15 Moffett / Twin Pusher 30-sec Antique TBD Aug 19 OT Large Rubber (comb) 1/2A Gas (Mod/Nos) TBD Sep 16 Nos Wake / Nos Rubber OT ABC Fuselage TBD Oct 14 P-30 Electric Q/E/G TBD Nov 11 HLG / CLG / Coupe F1G 1/2A - D Gas (mod) TBD Dec 16 Gollywock Mass Launch + 1/2A Texaco TBD OT Small Rubber (comb)
5 We ve tried to include as many popular events as manageable, and a couple are featured twice during the year for that reason. We are still looking for volunteers to step forward to CD a contest or two; if you would like to do so, please drop me a line at berntemec@verizon.net (Ed. Note: This is a new address for Bernie so make a note of it) or call me at After several requests, this year we are also going to keep tabs of the contest results and count points towards a Club Championship. There will be a category for power (including electric), and one for non-power (i.e. rubber and glider.) There will also be a category for Grand Champion based on all points. Last year we accumulated points on a trial basis to see how this would work. We awarded points in the inverse finishing order, so if there were 8 entries, the winner got 8 points, third place got 6, and so on. If you were the only entry, you only got 1, even though you won, and that didn t seem fair to me. We had a couple of occasions where three guys showed up to fly, but one broke his plane before he flew, and another hadn t got the right equipment and so didn t fly. The winner was cheated out of two points through no fault of his own! So this year, we are using a points system that seeks to reward both performance and the size of the competitive field. Points will be awarded to the first eight places in the amount 10, 8, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, and 1. Points will also be awarded at the rate of 1 for every flyer you beat. So if we have 4 entries (a typical field size for last year) the winner will get 13, second place 10, third 7 and fourth 5. If you are the only entry you ll get 10 points, but only if you fly the event no points for just putting up one short flight and calling it quits cos you ve won already! This scheme will only work if we have all the contest info in a timely manner, so CDs please turn in the score sheets to me at the end of the contest. If I m not there, there will be a designated alternate. As before, this is intended to provide a low-key, no pressure fun environment where you can get a taste of friendly competition flying and an opportunity to run one as a learning experience. Look forward to seeing you there! SCAMPS Postal Contest results 2008 by Hal Wightman A certificate was presented to George Walter at the January SCAMPS meeting for his first place in the SCAMPS WEDNESDAY POSTAL CONTEST that concluded the end of December, 2008 for the high time with a Gollywock. His winning time was 15min 0sec, based on his OOS flight in July. Hal Wightman won the high time for the Tomboy event with a time of 13min 33sec also flown in July SCAMPS WEDNESDAY POSTAL BEGAN ON THE FIRST WEDNESDAY OF JANUARY. The Gollywock mass launch was conducted on January 7th and the first times were recorded for the SCAMPS POSTAL. The current 1st place standing is 4m 01s put in by Hal Cover. 2nd place was put in by Hal Wightman of 3m 10s. Third place is held by Bob Goldie at 1m 30s. These times will surely be upped during the year. Hal Wightman and John Donelson also flew for times with their Tomboys. Hal is in first place and second place with respective times of 6m 53s and 6m 19s. John is in third place with a time of 6m 05s. Hal is using a Mills.074 diesel and John is using a Cox.049. Again, these are the first times for the New Year and no doubt they will be upped shortly. Go for it, SCAMPS! Contact Hal Wightman with your times, (only applicable if flown on Wednesday at the Perris field). Tip of the Month One of the problems I have always had is trying to get warps out of my wing. The technique is not the issue; a simple heat gun does the trick but when wrestling a really big wing like my Satellite, it is difficult to hold the proper amount of warp in the wing while having a hand free to work the heat gun over the surface. The solution presented itself to me at the mall (yes I am a child of the 80 s and no not the 1880 s). While passing the As Seen on TV store I noticed a hair dryer stand. Most heat guns are set up very similar to hair dryers and this stand was my solution. The head can be positioned to just about any angle and it will adjust up to 36 high. Now I can set the heat gun on the stand, hold my warp in and just walk back and forth in front of the hot air. This will be a lot easier and safer than trying to hold the center section between my legs, the outer panel with my right hand and the heat gun with my left. Not the easiest of tasks in a crowded garage! The stand sells for about $20
