Michelle Gales began her career at UK in the first meet of the season in the allaround. She scored a thanks to a on the vault and a on the floor exercise. She repeated her performance on floor last week. Kara and Krista Prestigiacomo also have given the GymKats some solid routines. Kara has been very consistent on the vault scoring both a and a twice. Krista got off to a decent start with a on the floor exercise to open the year, but last week she set a new career mark with a on floor. Two Seniors Careers End Prematurely The GymKats have lost seniors Jennifer Simmons and Katie Toups for the year. Simmons tore the anterior cruciate ligament and medial collateral ligament in her left knee, while Toups tore the ACL in her right knee. Simmons also lost most of her sophomore season in 1999 to a broken ankle. Neither gymnast will seek a medical redshirt. Primault named SEC Gymnast of the Week Sophomore Aronda Primault was named the Southeastern Conference Gymnast of the Week on Jan. 8, the first of the season. Primault earned the second such honor of her career with a career performance on the floor exercise in UK s season opener. She claimed the individual title with a and helped secure a win over OSU after the two teams were tied with three gymnasts remaining in the final rotation. Lemp Named PNC Bank Student-Athlete of the Week Jessie Lemp was named the UK PNC Bank Student-Athlete of the Week for the week of Jan. 13. Lemp has been a member of the Southeastern Conference Academic Honor Roll since the 1999 school year. She has also been named to the University of Kentucky's Athletic Director's Honor Roll and the Dean's List each semester since the 1999 spring term. Lemp also was named a National Association of Collegiate Gymnastics Coaches/Women Academic All-American in the 2000 and 2001 seasons. With her extra time, Lemp enjoys volunteering at the Hope Center, Richmond Place Retirement Community and the UK Children's Hospital. She also serves as a mentor at several local elementary schools. Excite Nite Opens Season For the 19th time, Excite Nite opened the UK gymnastics season. As in years past, the evening provided fans a look at this season s GymKats and offered other exciting segments. However, this season, instead of competing against one another in an intrasquad scrimmage, UK brought in Ohio State for the first meet of the season. Kentucky claimed its first victory of the season with a win over OSU. The evening was called Celebrate America - Flippin in the USA. The night was dedicated to Mari-Rae Sopper, the newly-hired gymnastics coach at UC Santa Barbara whose life was taken on September 11, 2001, when the plane on which she was a passenger crashed into the Pentagon. The patriotic evening ended with a big Fourth of July in the Winter finale with Lexington, Kentucky State and University of Kentucky Police and Lexington Firefighters unfurling the Stars and Stripes as the 5,275 in attendance sang. Record Crowd When 5,275 gymnastics fans went to Memorial Coliseum to watch the GymKats defeat Ohio State on Jan. 5, 2002, UK became a member of an exclusive club. In the past five seasons, only eight teams have had a crowd that large. Kentucky became the ninth overall and the fifth Southeastern Conference team to perform at home in front of that large a number. Captains Lemp and Adelt Senior Jessie Lemp and junior Karla Adelt were selected by their teammates prior to preseason conditioning to captain this season s GymKats. 6

7 Academi-Kats The University of Kentucky gymnastics team has a tradition of excellence on and off the mats. In 2001, UK had eight student athletes named to the National Association of Collegiate Gymnastics Coaches/Women Scholastic All-America team for the second straight year. The GymKats also placed five gymnasts on the 2001 Southeastern Conference Academic Honor Roll SEC Academic Honor Roll Mila Chitwood Beth Coleman Krissy Hoeferlin Jessie Lemp Katie Toups 2001 Academic All-America Karla Adelt Nicole Allen Stacey Hackett Jessie Lemp Mindy Smith Stephanee Stone Katie Toups Melissa Tucker Kats From Across the Nation This season s edition of the GymKats boasts athletes from 11 different states. The Gators finished seventh that year. However, UF set a standard that the remaining conference teams have followed. Since the second meet in 1983, Florida represented the conference each year through Most importantly, the Gators took at least two other SEC teams along with them. Even though UF did not make it as a team in 2000, three conference teams competed at the NCAA meet. Not only have SEC teams gone to nationals, they have done quite well. The SEC has won eight national team titles and 49 individual titles. In 1998, the SEC had the top three finishers, becoming the only conference in history to do so. Overall, the SEC has won the NCAA eight times, with Georgia taking the title five times and Alabama claiming three. Though Kentucky has never competed in the NCAA Championships as a team, it does hold a couple of individual records. Kentucky is second in the NCAA in individual event champions in a single year with four and Jenny Hansen is third all-time in number of First-Team All-America honors with 13. Hanson also is the only gymnast to ever win three all-around championships. The GymKats on the Web... The University of Kentucky's official athletics website, ukathletics.com, went through a major overhaul during the summer. UK took advantage in their strongest event, the floor exercise, tying the fourth-highest floor total in school history with a to overcome Ohio State and claim the victory. The teams were tied with three gymnasts remaining in the meet. UK took a slight lead with sophomore Julie Joy's 9.825, but the GymKats scored the win with a from freshman Michelle Gales and a career-high from sophomore Aronda Primault, who claimed the individual floor title. Sophomore Julie Joy contributed a "I am very pleased," Coach Leah Little said. "In our first meet of the season, we did make some mistakes, but we also had some great performances. It is great to have Julia (Gore) back. Michelle (Gales) and Aronda (Primault) were phenomenal on floor. I knew that would happen. And it was wonderful for Julie to win the allaround. This team had its back against the wall. These gymnasts are fighters, and knocking off a ranked team gives them a lot of confidence going into next week." The GymKats opened the night on vault where they tallied a , their second-highest score of the night. Primault led the way with a to tie for first-place honors with OSU's Shelley Harris and Jill Tucker. Gales and fellow freshman Kara Prestigiacomo each contributed a to help UK to a 1.3-point lead after the Buckeyes were forced to count two falls on bars. UK moved to the bars for the second rotation where Gore claimed the title with a career-high What makes that even more of an achievement is that Gore dislocated a shoulder on the bars in preseason workouts. Senior co-captain Jessie Lemp assisted the GymKats' cause with a With six solid performances on the vault from OSU, however, Kentucky's lead slipped to points at In the third rotation, UK went to the beam where early problems last season resurfaced. Two of the first GymKats fell from the apparatus, and despite Mindy Smith's 9.825, her 17th consecutive score of or better, the Buckeyes took a lead with a on the floor exercise. Jan. 18, 2002 UK , UF The 13th-ranked University of Kentucky gymnastics team scored its second best total of the season but fell short in its bid to upset No. 11 Florida, , in UK's Southeastern Conference opener. The GymKats (2-2) got off to a wobbly start on the vault, counting one fall for a team total of to fall behind the Gators (4-4) early. UK did have some nice performances as Julia Gore won the individual title with a career-high 9.850, while Kara Prestigiacomo tied for third with a However, UK came back strong on the uneven bars behind a career-high from Jessie Lemp, who claimed the bars crown. Julie Joy picked up second place with a 9.850, and Gore tied for fourth with a Aronda Primault and Nicole Allen complemented the scoring with a and 9.725, respectively. Heading into the third rotation, Kentucky held a point lead. Despite Kentucky scoring a season high, the balance beam again gave the GymKats trouble. UK counted one fall for a team total of Lemp led the way for Kentucky with a 9.800, as Mindy Smith continued her streak of meets without a fall, which extends her entire collegiate career, to score a Melanie Zaharias added a 9.700, but a season-high on floor by the Gators gave UF a point cushion. Kentucky moved to its strongest event in the fourth rotation, the floor exercise. Primault tied for second-place honors with a 9.875, and Joy tallied a to lead the way. However, UK also had to count three routines with a deduction for stepping out of bounds for a total of to set the final margin. "We are definitely a better team than we showed tonight," Coach Leah Little said. "I am disappointed. We need to begin to learn to compete to win and stop making the mistakes we did tonight. It is good that we are home again next week, and we look forward to a much better performance." No. 20 UK vs. New Hampshire Lexington, Ky. Jan. 25, 2002 UK , UNH Behind a score on vault, the fourth-highest in school history, 20th-ranked Kentucky tallied a season-high team total to top New Hampshire, The GymKats (3-2, 0-1 Southeastern Conference) used their best overall performance of the season to hand UNH (2-1) its first defeat of the year. UK had at least the top three individual finishers on each event, and Aronda Primault won the all-around competition with a , the second best of her career. "This team showed much improvement this week," Coach Leah Little said. "I am pleased that we got back on track. It was good to see Aronda back in the all-around and to win. We still had a couple of mistakes, but that only shows that we can definitely improve. We are looking to break some records this season." UK opened the night on vault where Kara Prestigiacomo tied a career high with a to get the evening started well. Julie Joy and Melanie Zaharias also got into the action with career highs, a and a respectively.
