1 QCAA BASKETBALL YEAR ROUND BASKETBALL; YEAR- ROUND LIFE SKILLS; YEAR-ROUND DEDICATION TO ACADEMICS QCAA: Turning young men into champions Twelve years ago, Edward Addie had a dream: he wanted to leave the corporate world at Bank of America and explore his passion for basketball. But he wanted to do more than just have teams play games. He wanted to try to impact the lives of young men the way others had done for him. Addie created QCAA (Queen City Athletic Association) Basketball with a focus on Christian values and academic enrichment. QCAA teams have won five national championships since 2009, but Addie is most proud of the young men s lives the program has touched, the donations from businesses and private citizens that allow the organization to offer an opportunity to share academic enrichment, cultural trips and Christian values with young men who might never have the opportunity. 2 Who we are QCAA is a 13-year-old organization that seeks to provide opportunities for interested student-athletes to pursue their passions of becoming successful basketball players and successful young men. QCAA BOARD OF DIRECTORS VJ KING A FOUR-YEAR QCAA ALUM AND A 3.75 GPA STUDENT, VJ WAS NAMED TO THE 2013 USA BASKETBALL U16 MEN S NATIONAL TEAM. HE WAS A 2013 MAXPREPS FRESHMAN ALL-AMERICAN. VJ WILL BE A SOPHOMORE IN HIGH SCHOOL IN FALL HE CREDITS QCAA AND COACH ADDIE WITH HELPING HIM ALONG WITH HIS BASKETBALL DEVELOPMENT. RICKY PRICE President Edward Addie Coach Addie is recognized as a "teacher of the game." He has coached some of the most talented young men to ever come through the state of North Carolina. During the 2007 Nationals, Addie led his AAU team to the National Final Four and finished third in the country. His last six teams compiled an amazing record of , including two top 10 finishes at 17U Nationals and six consecutive trips to the North Carolina AAU Final Four. In 2009, Coach Addie's summer squad had eight players sign Division I scholarships. His th Grade team won more than 60 games, 14 tournaments and a national title QCAA Board Members Pete McArdle, Associate Partner, Knox, Brotherton, Knox, Godfrey law Mike Praeger, CEO Avid XChange Michael VanAmburgh, Manager, IBM Langston Wertz Jr, Charlotte Observer BEFORE ENROLLING AT DUKE, PRICE WAS A TOP 4 RECRUIT NATIONALLY OUT OF LOS ANGELES. A MCDONALD S ALLAMERICAN, HE BECAME ALL-ACC IN DURHAM. TODAY, HE S AN ASSISTANT COACH AND OFFICIAL TRAINER/LIFE SKILLS COACH FOR QCAA BASKETBALL. WE RE THRILLED TO HAVE YOUNG RICKY BE A PART OF OUR STAFF D E M O N B RO O K S ANOTHER PROUD QCAA ALUM, BROOKS WON SOUTHERN CONFERENCE PLAYER OF THE YEAR AS A SOPHOMORE AT DAVIDSON, THE FIRST UNDERCLASSMEN TO WIN SINCE STEPHEN CURRY. BROOKS IS A PART-TIME COACH/CONSULTANT AT QCAA, WHO FREQUENTLY WORKS CAMPS AND CLINICS.
3 QCAA BASKETBALL HAS ALWAYS BEEN MY DREAM...NOW IT S MY PASSION. Dear Friend: I started QCAA Basketball 13 years ago with a dream. I wanted to impact the lives of young people the way some caring men had done for me. I grew up, like many young people today do, without a father in the home. But through sports, I met a number of caring coaches and support people who mentored me and showed me the value of education. These men helped me earn a college scholarship and a college degree and exposed me to life outside of the small town in Georgia I grew up in. THESE MEN HELPED ME EARN A COLLEGE DEGREE AND EXPOSED ME TO LIFE OUTSIDE A SMALL TOWN. So after many years of working in corporate America for a large Charlotte-based bank, I decided to pursue my dream of running a full-time basketball program and trying to impact the lives of some young men the same way that I was impacted as a kid. We ve been very lucky and successful at QCAA. We ve attracted lawyers and doctors and successful businessmen to our program and to our board. We ve sent many of our players to college. Best of all we ve been able to give some opportunities to young men to play with us who might not otherwise have had one. One of the things we ve emphasized over the years is academics. We have to get report cards to register for tournaments and we monitor how players are doing. Because we see them so much and we control something they value -- time playing on the court -- we can tell them they need to show focus on academics, to listening to Mom and Dad, to doing their chores, to attending church and getting some core Christian values. Many of our players accept these demands gleefully. Because our program has attracted successful people in the community, we are able to fund, via generous donations, kids who might not be able to afford a program like ours. Then we are able to take those kids on out-of-town trips. We had two players who flew for the first time this year. Last year, we had seven who had never seen the White House. We took a tour. We visited Elvis house and saw the hotel where Martin Luther King was shot in Memphis, Tenn, this year. At QCAA, we try to give our studentathletes much more than basketball. And by mixing at-risk youth with youth from steady households, we find that the positive influences rub off; the language skills improve, the desire to go to school and get a job begins to grow; hope steps in. That s what sports gave me as a kid growing up in Georgia: hope. And that s what I want QCAA Basketball to do for some of the kids we are trying to touch in Charlotte. 6 QCAA EVENTS Each year, QCAA hosts three annual events which are always sold out. A little on each: The Run N Shoot Winter League: In November, QCAA will host its popular winter league for the 8th straight season. Last year, more than 50 teams from four states showed up for weekly play leading up to a tournament playoff and championship weekend. The N.C. Invitational: The first N.C. Invitational in February 2013 drew more than 90 teams to Indian Trail s Carolina Courts facility, which was filled to capacity with fans, parents and players. Teams attending the event came from eight states. The Rumble: QCAA s signature event is held in May. In 2014, the Rumble will turn 11 years old. Last year, more than 130 teams from 13 states visited Indian Trail s Carolina Courts facility as well as several Charlotte-area school campus facilities. The Rumble is recognized as one of the top youth sporting events in the southeast. Last year s event drew national high school recruiting scouts and filled Carolina Courts for three days. Sponsorships available: QCAA is considering title sponsors for each of its events for 2014.
