Record-breaking Season Comes To An End Golden Gophers Lose to Defending National Champs in National Semifinals: The Golden Gopher basketball team's storybook season came to an end at the hands of the Kentucky Wildcats in the semifinals of the Final Four on Mar. by a score of 7-. The loss ended the most successful season in Minnesota basketball history. The Golden Gophers set numerous team records along the way and achieved the school's first appearance in the Final Four. Haskins Continues to Receive Accoiades: Head Coach Clem Haskins has received many awards in the past month and made virtually a clean sweep of the major Coach of the Year Awards, missing out on only the Naismith Award (Roy Williams). He is a finalist for the last of these awards, the John and Nellie Wooden Award which will be presented this weekend in Salt Lake City, Utah. Haskins won the Associated Press, USBWA, NABC, Chevrolet/CBS, and numerous other publications' coach of the year awards. In addition, Haskins won the inaugural Claire Bee Award for the coach who is a positive role model and ambassador for the sport of collegiate basketball. Golden Gophers Enjoy Record-Setting Season: The Golden Gophers registered the best season in school history with their - mark. The record surpasses the - record that the 7-77 team posted. The wins is the most for a team since Indiana and Michigan had wins in -. The - conference mark is surpassed in percentage only by the - team that was - in conference and - overall and was named national champi-,.---- ACliON JACKSON All-American guard Bobby Jackson had an outstanding senior season, winning the MVP Award, the Defensive Player of the Year Award and being a unanimous All- first team selection. He also won the Chicago Tribune MVP Award as well. Jackson didn't stop there as he garnered second team All-America honors from the AP, NABC, USBWA, Wooden Awards and Basketball Weekly. In postseason play, he earned All-Midwest Regional MVP honors and was named to the NCAA All-Final Four team, the only player named who was not participating in the championship game. Davis Named Head Coach At Furman: Assistant Coach Larry Davis was named Head Coach at Furman University on April. Davis, a member of the Minnesota's staff for the past three seasons, is the second member of Minnesota's staff to be named a head coach in the past seven months (Milt Barnes/Eastern Michigan). An outstanding recruiter, Davis was responsible for Minnesota having the eighth-rated recruiting class in the country two years ago. That class included Bobby Jackson, Charles Thomas, Quincy Lewis, Courtney James and Miles Tarver.
