1. Age Requirements Grade Season 4 th grade: Born on/after August th grade: Born on/after August th grade: Born on/after August th grade: Born on/after August th grade: Born on/after August The table above includes a 1 year age waiver. The player must be in the appropriate grade before the age waiver can be applied. The one year age waiver is included to accommodate players who have stayed back a year or started school a year late. This allows them to play with their classmates. Players born before the Age Waiver date are not eligible to play in the division. Players may NEVER play down a grade. Even if they meet the age requirements (i.e. a young 7 th grader may not play on the 6 th grade team). Players may, at their town s discretion, play up a year (i.e. a 6 th grader may play on the 7 th grade team). No permission is required from the league. For liability reasons, players are NOT allowed to play up more than 1 grade level. Meaning, a 5 th grader may never play on a 7 th grade team. On an exceptionally rare, case-by-case basis, the league may grant a waiver to certain players that do not meet the age requirements. To do so, however, the player must be a weaker player that will not drastically affect the outcome of any games. Program must contact league and discuss before this is allowed. 2. Player Residency Requirements CMYBL is not an AAU program. Therefore, an Acton-Boxborough team should be made up of players from Acton and Boxborough. Individual town based programs should only draw players from their town. Regional school based programs should only draw players from those towns included within the regional school district. Though infrequent, the League Commissioners do have discretion to grant exceptions. See Player Residency Rules page for specific details. 3. Player School Choice Rules Players attending a PUBLIC School in a school district outside their residency have the option to play for the program where they live or for the program where the PUBLIC SCHOOL is located. Players attending a private school must play for the program that covers their residency. Private schools do not fall under the PUBLIC school choice rule. See Player School Choice Rules page for specific details. 4. Game Length 4 th and 5 th Grade: Two 13-minute halves. Stop clock. 6 th Grade: Two 14-minute halves. Stop clock. 7 th and 8 th Grade: Four 8-minute quarters. Stop clock. 5. Halftime All divisions: 5 minutes Note: In 7 th and 8 th grade, the break between the 1 st /2 nd and 3 rd /4 th quarters are not to be treated like halftimes. At the most, there should be a one minute break. 6. Overtime All divisions: 3 minutes. Play as many overtimes as necessary to break the tie. 7. Time-outs Four (4) time-outs per team, per game. Time-outs may be used at any time during the game. One additional time-out awarded to each team per overtime period. Time-outs do accumulate and carry over into overtime.
8. Player Fouls A player is disqualified on his/her fifth (5 th ) personal foul. 9. Bonus Free Throws 1 and 1 on the 7 th team foul. Double bonus (2 free throws) on the 10 th team foul. o Bonus resets at halftime but does not reset if the game goes into overtime. 10. Free Throw Line For 4 th and 5 th grade games and girls 6 th grade games, it is suggested that the home team place a strip of tape at approximately 13.5 from the basket; 1.5 in front of the 15 free throw line. When attempting a free throw, all 4 th and 5 th grade players, and 6 th grade girls are permitted to carry over to the 13.5 line following their shot. If there is not tape on the floor, this line can be imaginary at the referee s discretion. All shooters must begin their shot behind the regulation 15.0 line. Shooter must not advance past the appropriate line (either 15 or 13.5 ) until the ball hits the rim. 11. Defense Style: 4 th grade o Man-to-man (M2M) defense only for the duration of the season at any/all points during the game. 5 th grade o Man-to-man (M2M) defense only for the duration of the season with exception to the last three weeks of the regular season only. During those three weeks, zone defense is permitted in the front court only. M2M defense only for the balance of the season and during the playoffs. 6 th, 7 th and 8 th grades o No restrictions on defense style. Boys 4 th and Girls 4 th Grade Games Defense Courtesy Rule o Although it is NOT mandated by the league, it would benefit all players and play at this level if coaches would start their defensive stance at the 3 point line. Once the opposing team brings the ball over the half/mid court line, defenders are then free to defend M2M anywhere in the front court, including beyond the 3 point arc. If a team is pushing fast breaking the ball up the court, any defensive player is allowed to play defense to stop the ball until the offensive player picks up his/her dribble, and/or the rest of the defender s team catches up with the offensive play. At that time each defensive player must defend one opponent player e.g. M2M. Defensive help may be used to stop dribble drive penetration. See CMYBL: Man-to-man versus Zone Defense Rules Sheet for a complete overview. 12. Full Court Press: 4 th & 5 th grade: o press permitted during last 3 minutes of each half ONLY, as well as well as during any overtime period(s). o Press limit is 6 points. 6 th, 7 th and 8 th grade: o Full court press permitted all season. No restriction on defense style. o Press limit is 12 points. See CMYBL: Full Court Press Rules for a complete overview on full court press. Coaches are responsible for ensuring that the legal defense style and press rules are being played by their team. These are not necessarily enforceable rules by the referees. 13. Basketball Size: Boys 4 th -6 th Grade / All Girls: 28.5 Women s Regulation Collegiate Basketball Boys 7 th -8 th Grade: 29.5 Men s Regulation Collegiate
BasketballScorekeeper / Clock Operator: Each team must provide a scorebook and scorekeeper who will sit at the scorer s table during the game. If only one scorekeeper sits at the scorer s table, that book becomes the official (home) book, regardless of if it is the home or away team. Host gym must provide a clock operator and an acceptable scoreboard for ALL games at their site. This includes host sites that supply two gyms. 14. Referee Fees For 6 th, 7 th and 8 th grade level games. o Each team is responsible for paying one referee $40 cash prior to the start of the game. If only one game official each team pays the official $30 each. In crossover games with Metrowest, the home team pays both officials. For 4 th and 5 th grade games: o Each team must pay one official $35.00 in cash prior to the start of each game. In the unlikely event that only one referee shows up, each team is responsible for paying the single referee $25.00 cash prior to the start of the game. 15. Metrowest Crossover Games In a crossover game against a Metrowest team, the league rules of the home team applies. For example, Metrowest plays quarters (not halves). When playing a Metrowest team at a Metrowest gym, you will play quarters. When playing a Metrowest team in A CMYBL gym, you will play halves. Other exceptions to standard rules may include full court press limits and time outs. A copy of the league rules for Metrowest may be found on their website: For Metrowest crossover games, the home team pays both officials. For Metrowest crossover games, the host program is not permitted to charge a spectator fee. 16. Spectator Fees: Each program (town) is permitted to charge a spectator fee. The league does not discourage nor endorse this practice. For crossover games with Metrowest, the home location is not permitted to charge a spectator fee. 17. Conduct Issues: All conduct issues, including technical fouls, ejections, unruly spectators, unsafe gym sites, suspected cheating, and flagrant fouls will be reported to the CMYBL Conduct Board for review. Failure to comply with Conduct Board sanctions may warrant suspension or dismissal from the league. Any individual ejected from a game for reasons other than receiving five personal fouls is suspended from attending the next CMYBL game. 18. Order of Hierarchy: The commissioner of the league are: o Josh Hammer (D1, D1A, East). o Daryl Rupp (D2, B4, G4, West). o Each individual program (town) has a program coordinator who deal directly with the commissioner. o Coaches should first deal with their program coordinator for dispute resolution. o Parents and players should first deal with their coach for dispute resolution. 19. Other: All additional rules are in accordance with the current season s High School Federation Basketball Rules Book.
CMYBL: Man-to-man versus Zone Defense Rules Sheet 1. Defense guidelines for each division: DIVISION ZONE ALLOWED? FULL COURT PRESS PRESS POINT SPREAD LIMIT No Zones or trapping press permitted for the 6 points. If your team is up by 6 4 th allowed. Man-to-man grade last 3 minutes of each half defense only for the duration of the season. duration of OT. 5 th Grade 6 th, 7 th and 8 th grade No Zones or trapping allowed. Man-to-man defense only for the duration of the season with exception to the last three weeks of the regular season. During those three weeks, zone is permitted in the front court only. Yes, zones are allowed. No defensive restrictions for the entire season. press permitted for the last 3 minutes of each half duration of OT. Even during the last three weeks of the regular season when zone defense is permitted, a full court zone press is not allowed. No restrictions. 6 points. If your team is up by 6 12 points. If your team is up by 12 The subsequent rules and guidelines (numbered 2-10) apply only to 4 th and 5 th grade teams (for the duration of the season): 2. Coaches are 100% responsible for managing M2M (man-to-man) versus Zone defensive play. Communication between coaches must be cordial and polite. 3. When teams are required to play M2M defense, double, triple, quadruple teaming, or proactive planned zone like trapping is not allowed in any way, shape, or form. 4. The only time two or more defensive players are allowed to defend the ball carrier is whenever the ball carrier has eluded their original M2M defender or has established a clear free lane to the basket. At that point, any player on the defending team has the right to leave the person they are guarding to defend the ball carrier from scoring (pure help reactionary defense). Once the original defender has re-established a M2M guarding position, the help defender must either switch back to the person they were originally guarding (if both are now covering the ball carrier), or may continue to guard the ball carrier if the original defender has switched off to defend an unguarded player. 5. Double or triple teaming a player without the ball is never allowed. 6. Switching/leaving the person you are guarding is allowed to teach players how to work around screens and to help stop drive, penetration. 7. Sagging defensive play (away from the ball side) is allowed as long as the defensive player has at least 1 foot out of the paint/key and he/she is positioned in a straight line between the player he/she is defending and the basket. 8. The primary goal is not to prevent/discourage help defense, it is for players to learn solid fundamental M2M help defense.
9. The secondary goal is to open up the game a bit at the 4 th /5 th grade levels. Allowing zones at those levels makes it extremely difficult for players to get close enough to the basket to score. Many players are not quite strong enough to shoot the ball beyond 12 ft or more. Playing M2M will enable more penetration to the basket and allow a game flow to take place. Also, players will learn better defensive fundamentals at an early age, and those skills will benefit them when they progress to playing zone defenses. 10. When required to play M2M, during inbound plays under the opponent s basket, teams are still obligated to play M2M defense ONLY. No zoning up under the opponent s basket. If an offensive player is positioned on the perimeter away from the basket, the defensive player is allowed to take a position in a line between the player they are defending and the basket and can only have one foot in the key. In this situation, the other foot must be outside the key. This is the same as item 6 above.
1. Full court press guidelines for each division: CENTRAL MASSACHUSETTS YOUTH BASKETBALL LEAGUE CMYBL: Full Court Press Rules DIVISION ZONE ALLOWED? FULL COURT PRESS PRESS POINT SPREAD LIMIT No Zones Allowed. press permitted for the 6 points. If your team is up by 6 4 th Man-to-man defense only grade last 3 minutes of each half for the duration of the season. duration of OT. 5 th grade 6 th, 7 th and 8 th grade No Zones Allowed except for the last three weeks of the regular season only and in the front court only. Yes, for the entire season. press permitted for the last 3 minutes of each half duration of OT. No restrictions. 2. Coaches are responsible for monitoring press point spreads, NOT OFFICIALS. 6 points. If your team is up by 6 12 points. If your team is up by Coaches should cordially communicate with each other on the sidelines when press point spread has been reached. 4. Coaches are responsible for telling their players when press point spread has been reached. 5. Coaches should cordially bring it to the attention of the officials when pressing is or is not allowed. This is a special league rule, not something the officials are used to dealing with. They have enough to deal with on the court! 6. SPECIAL NOTE: Once the press limit is reached, the team ahead MUST allow the team behind to advance the ball into the front court without pressure. If the team behind chooses to/or attempts to fast break/quick outlet and run the ball up the court following a defensive rebound, the team ahead has the right to play defense anywhere on the court, including the backcourt. Once the team behind holds the ball in a clear attempt to slow down play, the team that is ahead by the point spread must then retreat to begin defensive play inside the 3 point arc. 7. If press point spread is reached and team behind loses the ball, or the ball is stolen, as a direct reaction to pressure type defense (official s judgment) 1st violation is a warning and the ball returned back to the team behind. Subsequent violations are a team technical foul (at the discretion of officals) charged to both the player and the coach. 8. Officials have final say on all judgment calls regarding the implementation of the pressing rule. 9. For man-to-man versus Zone Defense rules, see man-to-man versus Zone Defense rules sheet.
