Page 2 Pages 3-4 Pages 5-6 President s message Many pathways for both players and families In the past 12 months our club has put a lot of time into developing a path to representative basketball for our most talented players. That is a great achievement and perhaps long overdue. Our club encourages excellence, but we also encourage the simple joy of participation in sport. We are a club for all players and that includes those who play for fitness, fun and making friendships with other players. With the Ivanhoe Knights you can now combine both Saturday domestic competition with the more serious Friday night representative basketball. For many players that will take their basketball to the next level. You can also, however, continue competing at a level that ensures you are having fun and keeping fit. You may not be aware that since we have made an association with the Darebin Giants, known as the Ivanhoe Darebin Basketball Association, we now offer two adult competitions. Those of our players who are now too old for domestic junior basketball can join either the Ivanhoe Darebin men s competition (run on Monday nights) or the Ivanhoe Darebin mixed competition (run on Sunday nights). I encourage our older players to consider this pathway. It is the intention of this club to continue pursuing options that cater for the needs of our players and their families. We also present pathways for those who want to be coaches, referees and club officials. Come join us. Go Knights! 2 The Ivanhoe Darebin Basketball Association Since the establishment of the Ivanhoe Darebin Basketball Association (combining the Ivanhoe Knights with the Darebin Giants) last year, our officials have been working with the Darebin Giants side of the Association to develop a joint representative basketball program for junior championship players. The Ivanhoe Darebin Knights U14 boys rep team above and bottom left. We now have 75 players in eight teams, including three girls teams. All eight teams participated in the ElthamDandenong Australia Day tournament the biggest tournament in the Southern Hemisphere with three of our teams winning their division. The Ivanhoe Darebin 14.1 girls rep team (left) played in the Eltham Dandenong tournament, losing only one game out of eight, and were premiers in their section. For those interested in playing rep in we will be holding information sessions and a rep ready program later in the year. By Andrew Menegas The Ivanhoe Knights play in the Eastern District Junior Basketball Association (EDJBA) on a Saturday while the Ivanhoe Darebin Knights play in the Melbourne United Victorian Junior Basketball League (MUVJBL) on a Friday night. You can play both. For those who are unsure of what rep basketball may offer in addition to playing for the Ivanhoe Knights, consider: the chance to play on a Friday night in a more competitive environment the likelihood of meeting other basketballers with the same passion for basketball and to make new friends meeting new coaches who will take your basketball skills to a new level travelling to different locations and being exposed to other talented basketballers in Victoria. 2

3 Player profiles By Tom Doran Highlight of the season? Abby Glascott Years playing for Knights: 5 Singlet no: 6 Team last season: G16.4 Abby is a multi-talented athlete who plays both basketball and Australian Rules Football. She is a member of the Inaugural Northern Knights U18 football representative squad, which is a feeder club for the Women s AFL. We discuss with Abby all things basketball and why she loves playing for her local club. What team did you play for in the summer season? My team was the 16.4 s. My coaches were my Dad (David Glascott) and my sister (Zoe Glascott). What do you like doing most on the court? I like going in for a layup on fast breaks down the court. The highlight of my season was winning the grand final because it was really intense and exciting as we drew and had to play overtime. We beat Collingwood who had won every game against us throughout the season. What do you like most about playing for the Ivanhoe Knights? It s a very family-friendly environment and has such a welcoming vibe to anyone and everyone that wants to join. What aspects of basketball have helped you in playing AFL? I would say working as a team and helping each other move the ball down the field. Best Knights basketball moment? I think it has to be my last grand final because we played overtime and it was just really exciting. Funniest Knights basketball moment? I don t think I have just one moment. It has to be multiple moments over all my seasons with all of my friends. Plans for next season? I think I m just going to take a break for a season or two, but I ll be back for sure. 3

4 Player profiles By Tom Doran What do you like most about playing for the Ivanhoe Knights? Lachie Walsh Years playing for Knights: 11 Singlet no: 25 Team last season: B20.2 Just the club being so local and being able to play with my mates. My first job was being a basketball referee for the Knights so I also appreciate the people behind the scenes that keep the club going. Lachie has played for the Ivanhoe Knights the past 11 years. Like many players, at the end of the summer season Lachie s domestic basketball journey reached its conclusion. We reminisce with Lachie about his favourite Ivanhoe Knights moments and discuss future basketball plans. What team did you play for in the summer season? I played for the under 20.2 team. Highlight of the season? I think the highlight of the season would have to be coming together with my mates every Saturday. I ve been with the same team for the past few years so it s been a lot of fun. What do like doing most on the court? I think leading my team on the court as a two-way player is probably my favourite thing to do. Offence and defence are equally important, so it s good to be on both ends playing as hard as possible. Best Knights basketball moment? There would be too many to choose from, but all the hard-fought wins and grand final appearances would be up there. Funniest Knights basketball moment? I think when you re having a good game and you re on top of the other team by a fair bit, you get to loosen up a bit and have a bit of fun on the court. That s probably when you get the most laughs. Favourite Knights coach? I ve had a lot of coaches over the 10 odd years I ve been playing. I ve been coached by my Mum, which meant a whole lot and in recent years I was also coached by John Burgess who was awesome. Plans for next season? The Monday men s competition for the Ivanhoe Darebin Knights is looking like a good option, so I ll probably get the boys down there. Looking for an adult competition? If you re now too old for domestic junior basketball but would like to continue your association with our club, consider playing in one of our adult competitions. 6 Grand final results Congratulations to all our players who made it through to the Summer Season finals. Of the 84 Ivanhoe Knights teams that competed, 66 made it to the finals. A total of 30 made it through to the grand finals and of these 14 were premiers. If you need a new uniform please call to order and arrange delivery. Ivanhoe Knights Basketball Club website A Community Coaching course will be held on Sunday 23 April, at the Ivanhoe East Primary School SPACE Centre, from 4 pm - 6 pm. There will be a presenter from Basketball Victoria. All coaches, parents or players interested in coaching are welcome to attend. Skills clinic Unfortunately our popular skills clinic for 5-8-year-olds will not be running in Term 2. We hope to be able to reintroduce the clinic in Term 3. Tournament Domestic and representative teams are invited to take part in a tournament to be held at the Dandenong Stadium during the July school holidays. The Melbourne Tournament 2017 will be held on Friday night 7 July, Saturday 8 July and Sunday 9 July up to 6 pm. This is the weekend in the middle of the school holidays. 7 Tips for a great season Absence from training and games Let your coach and team manager know as early as possible if you won't be at a training session or game. If a team is short of players for a game, the team manager may have to find fill-in players from a younger age group this is easier to do with advanced notice. Training sessions Please bring a water bottle and the correct size basketball for your age group to every training session. Having a water bottle on hand saves a fair bit of time during a training session. Many drills require one ball per player. Barracking during games We love parents barracking, but be careful not to cross the line towards instructing players during a game. Coaching and instructing players during a game is the prerogative of the coach only. It's noisy on a basketball court and we want to encourage the players to tune into the voice and guidance of their coach. The same applies to the referees. You are not permitted to call instructions or negative comments to the referees. Be on time Aim to arrive at games 10 minutes prior to start time and at training 5 minutes prior to start. Thanks refs! Please continue to offer your support to all of our referees remembering that many of them are only youngsters. All our new referees undergo accreditation with the Victorian Basketball Referees Association and are supervised during games. Adults can also become referees.
