Television: CBS broadcast with Gus Johnson (play-byplay) and Dan Fouts (analyst). If the game is a sellout by 1 p.m. Thursday (Sept. 10), it will be aired in the Cincinnati home market on CBS affiliates WKRC-TV (Ch. 12) in Cincinnati, WHIO-TV (Ch. 7) in Dayton and WKYT-TV (Ch. 27) in Lexington, Ky. Radio: Live coverage on the 28-station Bengals Radio Network, including in Cincinnati on flagships WCKY-AM (1530) Homer (all sports) and WEBN-FM (102.7). Broadcasters are Brad Johansen (play-by-play) and Dave Lapham (analyst). Setting the scene: The long march from March 30 opening day of the Bengals offseason conditioning program is over. The Denver Broncos are up this week for Cincinnati s 2009 season opener, and head coach Marvin Lewis feels ready to rumble. I said as the preseason began that we re a remade team, and now I can say I believe we ve got the athleticism and the ability, Lewis says. No matter what the situation, I think we have the tools to handle it. But Lewis blends his confidence with a significant qualifier. We have to set the goal of being the best-prepared team in the NFL, he said. We can t afford lapses. We can t leave a stone unturned. We have to make really good decisions all the time, and build a sharpness that s going to snowball and get better and better every week. It s a long football season, and we ve got to know we have to come ready to work every day. This is really a young team. When Chad (Ochocinco) has one of our special parking places (reserved for players with the most NFL experience), that s bad. Lewis laughed, to indicate he didn t literally mean bad, but he added: It tells me this is a team that has to play a little bit beyond its years. The Bengals closed the preseason last week with a 38-7 home win over Indianapolis, and for the preseason as a whole, they met the goal of showing sharply improved offensive punch. Last year s team, playing 12 games without QB Carson Palmer, was held to an NFL-worst net yards per game. It marked the only last-place yardage finish in franchise history. This year s edition averaged yards in preseason, including an NFL-leading yards rushing. I think we ve been physical, knocking people around, said LOT Andrew Whitworth, one of the leaders of a revamped offensive line. I think we ve played well as a unit and that we have a lot of confidence. Nothing matters now except how we play starting this week, but we re not going into this doubting ourselves in any way, I can tell you that. Cincinnati s passing game averaged a middle-of-the-road Game information Regular-season opener Sunday, Sept. 13, 2009 at Paul Brown Stadium Next up: Week 2, Game 2 Sept. 20 at Green Bay yards per game in preseason, but the Bengals threw only 90 times, compared to 124 for their opponents. The offense met a major Lewis priority by showing much-improved ability to hit long gainers with 14 completions of 20 or more yards and this was done with only one brief appearance by Palmer. The two-time Pro Bowler sat out the last three preseason games after suffering an ankle sprain in the opener, but the rest was seen as largely precautionary. Both Lewis and Palmer have said that if the last three games had been ones that counted, he would have played them all. Defensively, the Bengals are looking for continued improvement from a unit that rose to a No. 12 NFL net yardage finish in 2008, its first year under coordinator Mike Zimmer. The prime goal for 09 is more pressure plays, as last year s club played consistently but sometimes lacked a knockout punch. Zim did a great job last year, Lewis says, and I fully believe we have the ingredients to be even much better this year. We have returning players who are going to be better, and new players who can make an impact. The group of defensive newcomers includes veteran free agents in DT Tank Johnson and SS Roy Williams, and highpotential rookies in LB Rey Maualuga and DE Michael Johnson. The series: Denver leads, 16-8 overall, but the Bengals lead 6-5 as the home team. The last meeting in Cincinnati was a Monday night Bengals win on Oct. 25, In the clubs most recent meeting, Dec. 24, 2006 at Denver, the Broncos won The Broncos have been involved in several firsts for the Bengals: The first regular-season home game and first regularseason victory for the Bengals franchise was a decision over Denver on Sept. 15, 1968 at Nippert Stadium. On Sept. 7, 2003, in Marvin Lewis first regular-season game as Bengals coach, Denver won at Paul Brown Stadium. The first road game of any kind in Bengals history was in the 1968 preseason. On Aug. 10, the Broncos beat Cincinnati at Bears Stadium, Denver s minor league baseball park (later renamed Mile High Stadium). It was the second preseason game in Bengals history, following an opener at home against Kansas City. The most recent meeting in Cincinnati, the 2004 Bengals win mentioned above, marked the first visit of Monday Night Football to Paul Brown Stadium. Team bests from the series: Bengals MOST POINTS: 38, in a victory at Riverfront Stadium in LARGEST VICTORY MARGIN: 17, in the win in 81. FEWEST POINTS ALLOWED: 7, in a 17-7 victory at Cincinnati in Page 1

2 (Team bests from the series, continued) Broncos MOST POINTS: 45, in a victory at Mile High Stadium in LARGEST VICTORY MARGIN: 31, in the win in 91. FEWEST POINTS ALLOWED: 0, in a 10-0 victory at Mile High Stadium in The last meeting: Complete summaries of the last two Bengals-Broncos games at Denver in 2006 and at Cincinnati in 04 are on page 13 of this release. Palmer update: QB Carson Palmer, holder of numerous Bengals passing records and a two-time Pro Bowl selection, is expected to be at or very near 100 percent for the Denver game, after sitting out the final three preseason games. Palmer suffered what was termed a mild high ankle sprain on Aug. 14 vs. New Orleans. It was said he could have continued playing had the injury occurred in regular season, and his inactive status was termed largely precautionary. I m ready to get back on the practice field this Wednesday (Sept. 9) and be full-go for Denver, Palmer said after the Sept. 3 preseason finale vs. Indianapolis. It s not the best situation I would definitely have liked to play in all four preseason games and to have not missed a day but you ve got to roll with the punches. As far as getting back in the swing, I feel much more experienced and much more of a veteran than I ever have before. I feel more comfortable in the offense, more comfortable with the guys around me. And I am just as excited as I ve ever been. Graham update: Record-setting Bengals K Shayne Graham, who rested the last three preseason games due to a sore groin, is expected to open the regular season on schedule against the Broncos. I ve just taken it one day at a time (in rehab), and I m not worried about it, Graham says. I know I ll come back strong. I ve had injuries like this in the preseason before and had some of my best years. I ve been to the Pro Bowl after having a couple weeks off in the preseason (in 2005), and I ve been a Pro Bowl alternate when I ve had a preseason injury. Graham s Bengals records case includes points in a season (131), career field goal percentage (87.5) and consecutive FGs made (21). For his full NFL career, he ranks fourth all-time in FG percentage at percent. Rookie K Sam Swank of Wake Forest was signed Aug. 23 and filled in for Graham in the last two preseason games. Swank was waived on Sept. 5. Carson and Chad vs. Broncos: QB Carson Palmer and WR Chad Ochocinco are the only two Bengals skill position players with significant previous experience against the Broncos. In two games as a starter vs. Denver, Palmer has a 1-1 record from a win in 2004 at Cincinnati and a loss in 2006 at Denver. In the two games, he has completed 33 of 61 passes for 407 yards, with three TDs and three INTs. That works out to a passer rating of Ochocinco has played in three games against the Broncos, with 16 receptions for 276 yards (17.3 avg.) and two TDs. In the Bengals win over Denver in 2004, he caught seven-for-149 with a 50-yard TD reception from Palmer. Coming full circle: This week, seventh-year Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis opens a season at home against Denver for the second time as Cincinnati s field boss. The first time was Sept. 10, 2003 at Paul Brown Stadium, Lewis debut both with the Bengals and as an NFL head coach. That contest did not turn out well for Lewis or the Bengals, as Denver opened what would be a 10-6 playoff season with a victory. But Lewis Bengals went on to finish the season at 8-8, posting the biggest improvement of any NFL team for 2003 (a sixgame upgrade from the 2-14 club of 2002). The accomplishment earned Lewis a second-place finish behind Bill Belichick of Super Bowl champion New England in voting for the Associated Press NFL Coach of the Year award. For openers: The Bengals lost last year s season opener, at Baltimore, but the club had a three-year streak of Kickoff Weekend wins prior to that. Head coach Marvin Lewis is 3-3 in season openers, and 1-1 in season openers at home. The Bengals franchise has posted a mark in season openers, but the mark is in season openers at home. The Bengals are 2-3 in season openers at Paul Brown Stadium. The Bengals were 10-7 in season openers at Riverfront Stadium/Cinergy Field. Cincinnati won its only season opener at Nippert Stadium, over Miami in Broncos once again: This week s game will mark the seventh time for the Bengals to open the season against Denver, tying longtime division rival Cleveland for the most times as a Cincinnati opening day foe. No other team has opened against the Bengals more than three times. The Bengals are 1-5 in previous season openers against Denver, but are 1-1 as the home team. Cincinnati beat the Broncos 17-7 in the 1976 season opener, at Riverfront Stadium, and lost in the 2003 opener at Paul Brown Stadium. It seems to help: No one will be calling a season opener a must-win game. But in seven of their eight seasons of qualifying for postseason play, the Bengals have won the opener. This includes the last six instances. Denver is the only team to win a season opener against a Bengals club that would go on to make the postseason. The total at the time was the NFL record, breaking a mark of 275 by Chicago s Walter Payton which had stood since Dillon s 278 total now stands third in NFL annals. Jamal Lewis of Baltimore broke Dillon s record with 295 yards vs. Cleveland in 2003, and Minnesota s Adrian Peterson eclipsed Lewis with 296 yards vs. San Diego in Page 2

3 (Records vs. Broncos, continued) Dillon had no receiving yards in the Oct. 22, 2000 contest, but his 278 rushing total also stands as the Bengals record for most yards from scrimmage in a game. The Bengals had 407 total rushing yards in the 2000 win over Denver. That is the Cincinnati team record, and it also stands as the most rushing yards in a game by an NFL team in the last 58 years. The last team to top 407 was the 1950 New York Giants, who gained 423 against Baltimore. The 407 total ranks fifth alltime in the NFL for rushing yards by a team. On Oct. 19, 1969 at Nippert Stadium, the Broncos posted 10 sacks against the Bengals. That number is tied for the most ever allowed by Cincinnati in a game. In Bengals head coaching victories, he also ranks third (behind Wyche and Brown). Lewis record over his six previous campaigns is in the regular season, 0-1 in postseason and overall. He needs nine victories to tie Paul Brown ( ) in Bengals annals and is 18 wins behind Wyche (64-68). His Bengals log includes an AFC North Division championship in 2005, and he coached his first five years ( ) without experiencing a losing season, the club s longest such streak since a six-year span from Lewis enters 2009 tied for fifth in the NFL for current consecutive seasons as a head coach (seven). He has also cracked the active top 10 for most total seasons as an NFL head coach, sharing ninth place at seven with Jacksonville head coach Jack Del Rio. Lewis preseason record with the Bengals is Lewis was named the ninth Bengals head coach on Jan. 14, In 2002, he directed the NFL s fifth-ranked defense with Washington, serving as assistant head coach in addition to his role as defensive coordinator. Prior to his year with the Redskins, he was a record-setting defensive coordinator for the Baltimore Ravens. His six seasons ( ) with the Ravens included a Super Bowl victory following the 2000 season. In the 2000 regular season, Lewis Baltimore defense set the NFL record for fewest points allowed in a 16-game campaign (165). Lewis entered the NFL as linebackers coach with Pittsburgh from , guiding the careers of Pro Bowl selections Kevin Greene, Chad Brown, Levon Kirkland and Greg Lloyd. Cut to 53: On Sept. 5, the Bengals made 22 roster moves in reaching the NFL limit of 53: Seventh-year WR Antonio Chatman (ankle) was placed on the Reserve/Injured list. Three veterans not subject to waivers LBs Darryl Blackstock and Jim Maxwell and DT Langston Moore had their contracts terminated, releasing them to free agency. Eight players were waived and then re-signed Sept. 6 to the Bengals practice squad: TE Darius Hill, HB James Johnson, S Corey Lynch, DT Clinton McDonald, FB Chris Pressley, WR Maurice Purify, LB Dan Skuta, G Jason Shirley Ten players were waived: WR Freddie Brown, G Andrew Crummey (injury settlement), DE Chris Harrington, DT Ventrell Jenkins, TE Kolomona Kapanui, CB Rico Murray, OT Augustus Parrish, K Sam Swank, FB Fui Vakapuna, S Marvin White. Additionally, injured rookie OT Andre Smith of Alabama remained with the team on a roster exemption, not counting against the 53 limit. The exemption expires on Sept. 14. The head coaches Bengals information Page 3 Born Sept. 23, 1958, in McDonald, Pa., near Pittsburgh, Lewis played linebacker at Idaho State and earned All-Big Sky Conference honors in each of his three seasons ( ). He began his coaching career as an assistant coach at Idaho State in Josh McDaniels became the 12th head coach in Broncos history on Jan. 12 of this year. He spent the previous eight seasons ( ) with the New England Patriots, including as offensive coordinator/qbs coach. He helped the Patriots win three Super Bowls, four AFC Championships six division titles while posting the NFL s best overall record (111-34) during his eight years. McDaniels was a college coach at Michigan State in He was the fifth-youngest head coach in NFL history (32 years, eight months) at the time of his hire. He is the youngest active head coach in the NFL and the youngest head coach in Broncos history. A native of Barberton, Ohio, he attended Canton McKinley High School and played QB/wide receiver at John Carroll University from Lewis vs. Broncos: Lewis is 1-2, with a win at Cincinnati in 2004 and losses at home in 2003 and at Denver in Lewis vs. McDaniels: No previous meetings. McDaniels vs. Bengals: No previous meetings. It s a first: For the first time in the Marvin Lewis era ( ), two of the club s originally-signed college free agents have made the 53-player roster to open the season. In the previous six seasons under Lewis, it was either one or none. WR Quan Cosby of Texas and S Tom Nelson of Illinois State are the long-shot roster bid winners, after being passed over through 256 selections in the 2009 draft. Cosby did not have a reception in preseason, but he won the opening nod as the team s punt returner, with an 11.9-yard average that included a 49-yarder for a TD. Nelson s preseason contributions included seven tackles, including a sack, and a forced fumble that was a key play in Cincinnati s win at New England. Nelson also showed potential as a punt returner, with a 10.8-yard average on six returns. Preseason leaders: The Bengals led the NFL in preseason rushing average at yards per game, and WR Chris Henry led the league in touchdowns with four. Five different Bengals HBs rushed for more than 100 yards,

4 (Preseason leaders, continued) and all five averaged 4.3 yards per carry or better. The team percarry average was 5.1. Henry caught a TD pass in every game. He led the Bengals for the preseason with 14 catches for 224 yards (16.0). Line hands out some lumps: The Bengals offensive line still must prove itself in the regular season. RG Bobbie Williams is the only player starting in the same spot where he played at least half the season last year. But if preseason rushing is considered a good test, give the group an A-plus. Over the full preseason, together with reserves who saw plenty of action, the Bengals led the NFL with an average of rushing yards per game. The average yards per carry was a stellar 5.1. I really believe we have talent and great chemistry, and that s going to show, says LOT Andrew Whitworth, who spent most of 2008 at guard. We have a lot to prove, but history shows that more often than not, the team that has something to prove is more successful than a team that doesn t think it has a lot to prove. I like our mixture of guys. I ll take it. Whitworth and Williams are the veteran leaders of the group. Elsewhere on the starting five: Anthony Collins, a fourth-round 2008 draft pick, is at ROT. He started the last six games at LOT last season, as a replacement for injured Levi Jones. ROT had been the designated destination for first-round draft pick Andre Smith of Alabama, but Smith did not sign until Aug. 30, and he suffered a foot injury in his second practice, on Sept. 1. It s thought he will need at least three weeks before he can return to practice. Since he s been here, Anthony has stepped up to every challenge we ve put on him, says head coach Marvin Lewis said. He has grown up as fast as any player I ve been around with the Bengals. Second-year pro Nate Livings is the starting LG. Livings saw his first NFL regular-season action in 08, starting the final six games as an injury replacement, and he helped the club average rushing yards over last season s final three games. The center position figures to be upgraded for 09 with second-year pro Kyle Cook. Cook delivered a strong performance in 09 offseason work, and the 312-pounder promises to bring more power to the spot. They ll take em all: Throughout the latter stages of preseason, speculation flourished about the three Bengals HBs vying for two apparent roster spots behind starter Cedric Benson. Rookie Bernard Scott, third-year pro Brian Leonard and fourthyear man DeDe Dorsey all were performing at a high level, and it seemed there would be a most difficult choice to release one. But there s no NFL rule that says a team can t keep four HBs, and that s what the Bengals elected to do. An extra HB spot was created when the club decided to keep only one FB Jeremi Johnson on the final 53-player roster. Scott is a tough and quick rookie who made the leap to the NFL from the NCAA Division II ranks at Abilene Christian. He had eye-popping college numbers back-to-back rushing seasons of more than 2100 yards, with 73 TDs in those two seasons. In preseason with the Bengals, his rushing average was 5.5 yards per carry (24-133). Leonard, a second-round St. Louis selection in the 2007 draft, came to the Bengals in a May trade with the Rams for DT Orien Harris. He scored the Bengals only two rushing TDs in preseason, averaged 4.4 yards per rush and had four receptions for 43 yards. He has the size at 230 pounds to fill in as a blocking back in a pinch. Dorsey, an NAIA player in college (Lindenwood University), has had some injury problems in his prior three seasons, but has shown himself a playmaker when healthy. He has a 7.3-yard avg. on 26 regular-season NFL rushes, he averaged 6.5 yards in the 09 preseason, and he has been a special teams impact player with two blocked punts that he returned for TDs one in the 2007 regular season and one this past preseason. Here comes Rey: The second-round selection of LB Rey Maualuga made the Bengals 2009 draft in the eyes of many fans. With his wild hair, animated personality and reckless abandon on the field, the USC linebacker was a highly recognizable player. Many considered him a first-round talent, and the Bengals were lauded for a steal in getting him with the 38th overall pick. All of the above is still the case as the Bengals head into the season opener. He had 12 tackles in preseason, several with his signature flourish, and combined with his practice work, he has coaches feeling he is indeed the real deal. Though the start of Denver week sees him still in the No. 2 spot at SLB, behind a tough veteran in Rashad Jeanty, Maualuga is making a strong bid to crack the starting base defense. It s getting close, said LBs coach Jeff FitzGerald. We would think he would end up being in there somewhere. When he s ready, we ll make the change. Maualuga reports that he has worked hard to turn his unexpectedly late draft selection into a motivational positive. Hopefully no, not hopefully, somewhere down the line people are going to say, OK, he s a football player. We made a mistake, this guy can play, he said. And so I m going to show that. I m just working my butt off to get out there as fast as possible. Head coach Marvin Lewis says: With Rey, you knew from the start that the game was not going to be too big for him. He loves the challenge, he does everything at full speed, and he does it with an impact. We ve blitzed him quite a bit, says defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer. He s a kid that finds the football. I like his attitude, how he runs around and plays. Corner-stones: At the crucial position of cornerback, the Bengals are fortunate to have two young players, hitting their prime years, who have shown every indication of living up to their billing as first-round draft choices. Johnathan Joseph of South Carolina was the 24th overall pick in the 2006 draft, and Leon Hall of Michigan joined the Bengals as the 18th pick in the 07 draft. And in 2009, says defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer, it s time for them to punch their tickets at a Pro Bowl level. Those two cornerbacks, they ve got to play good for us to be good, Zimmer says. If they don t, we re probably not going to be very good. Hall has played in every game in his first two seasons, and his 26 starts at RCB include the last 24 in a row. He leads the team in INTs (eight) and passes defensed (37) over his two seasons. There s still room for improvement, but I think everything has carried over from last year, Hall says. We ve been contesting balls and make sure there are no catches. The potential and expectations are very high. Joseph has had a bit rockier a road as the LCB. The last two seasons, he has missed nine games and played at less than 100 percent in some others due to foot injuries. He enters 2009 feeling fully healed for the first time since his rookie year of I ve shown flashes, but I m going to put it all together now and stay healthy for 16 full games, he says. Zimmer is counting on Hall and Joseph to handle top receivers with minimal help, allowing the defense to focus on improving the pass rush. It s like always man-to-man, Joseph says. We have to stay on point all the time. Pressure is a big thing in this league, and there s pressure on us. Bigger chunks kept coming: Playing without Pro Bowl QB Carson Palmer for all but one quarter in preseason, the Bengals had 14 pass completions and six rushing plays of 20 or more yards. In the 2008 regular season, when the offense struggled mightily while missing Palmer for 12 games, the Bengals did not log their 14th 20-plus completion until Game 11, and they had only one more 20-plus rushing play all season (seven) than they had this preseason. It was preseason, but it was signs of what we were wanting to see, said head coach Marvin Lewis. We also had a few pass interference calls (in preseason) that gave us some nice gains, and last year, we couldn t seem to buy a penalty most of the time, much less a long completion. It s been a matter of the balls getting Page 4

5 (Bigger chunks kept coming, continued) to the right place much better than they did last year. It doesn t count now, but it s encouraging. Not all the long pass gains saw the ball in the air for a long time. Some, including a couple notable ones by WR Chad Ochocinco, came on yards after the catch. That s a head coach emphasis, says wide receivers coach Mike Sheppard. When the head coach asks for something, good teams try and give it to him, and one thing he s asked for is yards after the play. We ve put stiff arms into our drills, but that s something you really can t do until the pads come on, so we began to emphasize it when we got to camp. We made a number of big plays in training camp, and it s translated over to the games, said offensive coordinator Bob Bratkowski. You get crammed at times in practice at camp because you ve got so many players out there. We made a concerted effort to use a 50-yard length of the field with the receivers, and to get deep balls done at least every day or every other day. More on chunk plays: Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis says his emphasis on long gainers getting them on offense and denying them on defense stems from his past NFL experience as a defensive coordinator: It s when they strike up that band, you know? When that big bird drops the bomb on you (as a defense), you know it s over, and they re striking up the fight song. It s a bad day, it s a bad deal. Those are the things that are important as an offense. Otherwise, you don t put any fear in the defense. When I was coaching defense, if I didn t think the other team could go over our heads, well, we d just keep doing what we do and pressing them up front. Comeback player, comeback team? HB Cedric Benson and the Bengals have been on roughly parallel paths since In 2005, the Bengals won a division championship, and Benson joined the Chicago Bears with high hopes as the No. 4 overall pick in the NFL draft. But the Bengals have been out of the playoffs since, and Benson has been largely out of the spotlight. He was released by the Bears after 2007, carrying mediocre numbers and a reputation of not being a good team player. But things started picking up again in An injury-ridden Bengals team rallied from a disastrous start to post a record over the season s second half, and Benson was a big part of it. Rescued from the ranks of the NFL unemployed in late September, he went on to post three 100-yard rushing games, to lead the team in rushing yards (747) and yards from scrimmage (932), and to earn a new reputation as a valued teammate and friendly figure to media. Ced has not taken a play off since he s been here, says QB Carson Palmer, in a game or in practice. Even in T-shirts and shorts, he s going 100 miles an hour. Maybe some people wondered about him personally when he first got here, but he put that to rest in a hurry and earned everyone s respect. Benson was completely exonerated from off-field charges which had contributed to Chicago s decision to release him in June of But he concedes he did not always carry himself or his emotions well while with Chicago. He says the rough period after his release helped effect the changes his teammates and Bengals fans have seen. I m proud to have gone through what I did, and to have turned things around, he says. Benson saw early action in all four preseason games, getting a solid tune-up with 25 rushes for 108 yards (4.3) and five receptions for 39 yards. He had a fumble in the first preseason game a good reminder, he called it and he did not fumble again. Cedric the receiver: HB Cedric Benson does not want to be heading to the bench on passing downs this season. He posted career receiving highs of 20 catches and 185 yards last season, and aims to show he can do better in One thing I really want to turn around is that I usually played just on first and second downs last year, Benson says. Now I want to be able to play on third down and be featured in the passing game. I don t want to be singled out as a two-down player. Adjustment at TE: Though it s not likely to be a headline-grabber, the contribution from the tight ends figures as a key factor for the Bengals overall offensive performance heading into the season. The club entered the preseason with proven veterans Reggie Kelly and Ben Utecht atop the depth chart, but both have been lost in preseason to the Reserve/Injured list. The key blocking role that Kelly filled is now the responsibility of third-year pro Dan Coats, while Utecht s anticipated contribution as a receiving threat will hopefully come from rookie Chase Coffman of Missouri. Also ready to assist is third-year NFL player J.P. Foschi, who made the roster after joining the team in training camp, following his release by Oakland. We re making some adjustments, says offensive coordinator Bob Bratkowski, based on what s best suited to the guys we have. Coats (6-3, 264) joined the Bengals as an undrafted rookie in 2007 but has clawed his way in to playing 31 games with seven starts over his first two seasons. He played TE as a rookie, was switched to FB last year, and has returned to TE this year as the Bengals depth at FB improved. He s versatile, says head coach Marvin Lewis, and he has gained a lot of experience. We re hoping that pays off for him this year. Coffman was a prolific receiver in college, but was not asked to perform much of the offensive grunt work that falls to NFL tight ends. He s got a long way to go and not a lot of time to get there, says Bratkowski, but as was the case on draft day, we are very excited about his long-term potential. Three threats to QBs: The Bengals defense, though greatly improved in 2008 under new coordinator Mike Zimmer, was not much of a pass-rushing force. Cincinnati managed only 17 sacks, and improving the club s pass pressure has been proclaimed as Job One by Zimmer for Three good reasons to think Zimmer will succeed are DE Robert Geathers, DE Antwan Odom and DT Tank Johnson. All three are NFL veterans in their prime 27 years old and all three are motivated to show more than they did last year. Geathers, whose 10.5 sacks in 2006 were the most by a Bengal since 1983, has had only six over the last two seasons. Last year, he missed five games with a knee injury. Odom, who had eight sacks and a team-high 29 pressures for Tennessee in 2007, was slowed by injuries in his 2008 Bengals debut and had just three sacks. And Johnson, known for some years as one of the NFL s better interior pass rushers with Chicago and Dallas, played every game for the Cowboys last year but had only one sack. We all want the same thing, says Geathers. I think that s going to make a difference. Antwan, Tank and I, we ve all had years where we haven t been as productive as we have been before. We want to get back to where our numbers were before and be respected among our peers. When I set foot on the field, I want offenses to have to account for me. Third-down threat? The Bengals have lacked a great situational pass rusher on the defensive line for several seasons, but hopes are that they are grooming one in 6-7, 265- pound Michael Johnson, rookie third-round selection from Georgia Tech. Though he s clearly seen as a starting quality player down the road, passing downs are where Johnson could make his impact early in his rookie season. Mike has exceeded my expectations, and my expectations were high, head coach Marvin Lewis said of Johnson early in training camp. Of all the rookie players that I ve been around in the NFL, he s played as fast and as physical and has made as many football plays early in camp as any of them. I have been really pleased with Mike. It s unusual, to say the least, for Lewis to speak so plainly in Page 5

6 (Third-down threat?, continued) touting a rookie. But the Bengals have noted since draft day that Johnson came with exceedingly high potential for a player who lasted until the third round. An imposing player physically, he inspires best-scenario hopes of a career like the one enjoyed by Hall of Famer Ted The Stork Hendricks, but he weighs 30 pounds more than Hendricks did. At his best in college, he clearly played like a first-round NFL draft pick, but he came out of Georgia Tech with a reputation for not getting the most of himself on an every-play basis. Hence, he had to wait until the draft s second day, selected with the No. 70 overall pick. When you watched him on tape, said Bengals defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer, there were plays that made you say, Oh wow, I can t believe he could do that. On other plays, you said, Heck, he didn t do very good there. But he s a first-class kid top notch, 100 percent and it s our job as coaches to get the best out of him on every play. Johnson has vowed he will listen to all critiques from people who have my best interests at heart. Return of Jeremi: When the Bengals released FB Jeremi Johnson in November of last season, it appeared his oncepromising Cincinnati career had reached its end. Though Johnson had finished his rehab from a September knee injury, his prospects had faded due to two seasons which saw him get off to very slow starts due to weight and conditioning issues. It seemed he would be unable to regain the level of play that earned him first-alternate status for the Pro Bowl after the 2006 season. But Johnson, who held the team s No. 1 FB job from his rookie season of 2003 through 2007, did not give up the quest. He convinced the Bengals to re-sign him as a free agent this past April, and on Aug. 10, with his weight not far from a goal of 265 pounds, he was moved to the No. 1 spot on the team s depth chart. On Sept. 5, he was the only FB to make the club s 53- player roster. I m very pleased with what we ve seen from Jeremi, said head coach Marvin Lewis. He has re-dedicated himself, almost become a different person. I know he feels really good about it, too. Of his several months as an unsigned player, Johnson said: I knew I still had a love for football, and that the Bengals still needed me. They called and stayed in touch the whole time. I wasn t going anywhere. You all just thought I was gone. I was never gone. The Louisville, Ky., native says he was spurred to a more dedicated lifestyle by the birth last October of a daughter, Jai. It helped a lot, a whole lot, I m not going to lie, Johnson said. It makes you grow up. Even if you don t want to. Irvin boosts Henry: Michael Irvin, a supremely talented wide receiver who battled his share of off-field problems to reach the Pro Football Hall of Fame, is lending his support to a similar path for Bengals WR Chris Henry. I reached out to him, and he was receptive, said Irvin, now an analyst for NFL Network. He was a nice young man, and he listened. It told me a lot of things. It told me he didn t want to be in the situation he was in and that it does matter to him. That his career does matter, football does matter. He wants to play the game. He wants to do the right things. He wants to stay on the football field, because he did listen and we have had conversations about that. So I m wishing him the best. Henry is a 24/7 project for Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis, who has made it no secret that Henry s overall game blocking, grasp of the offense, hustle still has a long way to go. But it is not a stretch to say that in his best moments as a pure receiver, the 6-4, 200-pound Henry evokes an image of Randy Moss. Used to be, says Irvin, you d get the big receiver, and got the other receiver that was the fast guy. Now, the big guys are the fast guys. That s what (Henry) is. He s the big guy that gets up the field and can still make the plays. It s hard to press him on the line of scrimmage, because he s such a big, strong guy. Henry led the NFL in touchdowns in the 2009 preseason, scoring one in all four Bengals games. But after Game 3, when he had a 54-yard TD catch, Lewis noted he had given poor effort as a tackler following a Rams interception. In the preseason finale vs. Indianapolis, he made a tackle in a similar situation. Chris had a good tackle, said Lewis. It doesn t go unnoticed. He got the message. It s good when people get the message. Palmer rates with greats: The Bengals look with much anticipation to QB Carson Palmer s full return in 2009, and a comparison of top Cincinnati QBs shows why. Despite not playing as a rookie in 2004, as well as playing only four games in 2008, Palmer already holds his own in team passing records against Ken Anderson and Boomer Esiason, the Bengals two Super Bowl quarterbacks. Palmer owns the franchise s career records for passer rating and completion percentage, and he holds season marks for TD passes, rating, yards and completions. He also holds the game record for TD passes. Here s how Anderson, Esiason and Palmer compare, with a chart of team records held by each player: Career records (minimum 1000 passes) ANDERSON ESIASON PALMER Attempts (4475) Yds./att. Game records ANDERSON ESIASON PALMER Completions (40) Yards (490) TD passes (6) Comp. pct. (90.9) Longest pass (94) Dhani s margin was tops: Bengals MLB Dhani Jones not only won the team s 2008 tackling title, he won by a wider margin in his coaches analysis than any previous player in the Marvin Lewis era. With 165 stops on the season, Jones finished 53 ahead of second-place Brandon Johnson (112). For a full season under Lewis, the previous largest margin had been 46, from 2005, when LB Odell Thurman had 148 tackles and LB Brian Simmons had 102 stops. Chad still best, by far: Though WR Chad Ochocinco experienced the first down year of his career last season, set back by a chronic sore shoulder and the absence of QB Carson Palmer from the lineup, the Ocho enters 2009 in full health and is bent on further extending his already wide leads in Bengals all-time receptions and receiving yards. He will bid for his sixth selection for the Pro Bowl, which he missed last year after making the game the previous five seasons. Over the five seasons , he posted the five highest receiving yards totals in Bengals history, topped by a record 1440 yards in 07. Ochocinco finished 2008 with 612 catches for his career (all with Cincinnati). He is the only Bengal to reach the 600 mark for a Cincinnati career and is now 82 ahead of second-place Carl Pickens. In receiving yards, he pushed his total to 8905, more than 1800 yards ahead of second-place Isaac Curtis. And Ochocinco is just 31 years old entering this season, Page 6

Curtis played 12 seasons ( ), while Ochocinco has played eight. Ochocinco is now within 10 of the all-time Bengals leader in receiving TDs, Carl Pickens with 63. Pickens played eight seasons for Cincinnati ( ). Ochocinco now ranks tied for fourth with Curtis in total Bengals TDs (both at 53). The record is 70 by FB Pete Johnson, while Pickens shares second place with RB James Brooks at 64. Chad at 105 straight: WR Chad Ochocinco has caught at least one pass in 105 consecutive games, a Bengals record. He hit the 105 mark on Dec. 14 of last season vs. Washington. He was inactive the last two weeks of the season, due to a hamstring injury, but games missed do not affect such a streak, according to the Elias Sports Bureau. Thus, the streak is active heading into the 2009 regular season. Ochocinco first established a new Bengals mark at 94 on Sept. 14 of last season vs. Tennessee, breaking a tie at 93 with Carl Pickens. Ochocinco has played in 121 total Bengals games and has had a catch in all but four of them. His last game played without a catch was Game 4 of his second season, in 2002 vs. Tampa Bay. Graham a close fourth: Bengals K Shayne Graham will open the 2009 regular season in fourth place in NFL history for career field goal percentage (85.64), and he is less than one percentage point off the lead in a very close race. Mike Vanderjagt (no longer active) is No. 1 in league history at percent. Nate Kaeding of San Diego is second at and Robbie Gould of Chicago is third at Graham converted 21 of 24 FGs (87.5 percent) in Here s the top five entering 2009 (all except Vanderjagt figure to be active): PLAYER FG FGA PCT. Mike Vanderjagt Nate Kaeding Robbie Gould Shayne Graham Rob Bironas Better than the best? As far as Bengals coaches are concerned, K Shayne Graham is the true No. 1 in all-time field goal accuracy. Though Graham (85.64) ranks fourth in career NFL percentage, his career totals (173-for-202) include a 19-for-26 performance in previous NFL stops at Buffalo and Carolina. As a Bengal, Graham is 154-for-176, an percent accuracy rate which is Cincinnati s all-time best and also tops leader Mike Vanderjagt s career mark (86.47). Graham s record case: K Shayne Graham completed his sixth Bengals season in He enters 2009 holding the following club records: Points in a season: 131 in Field goals in a season: 31 in 2007 Field goals in a game: Seven (in seven attempts), on Nov. 11, 2007 at Baltimore. Consecutive FGs made: 21, from Games 1-10 of Career FG percentage: 87.5, on 154 of 176. Season FG percentage: 91.2 (made 31 of 34 in 2007). Consecutive PATs made: 158, compiled from Game 1 of 2003 through Game 11 of Career PAT percentage: 99.1, on 220 of 222. Season PAT percentage: (shares percentage record with other kickers, but his 47-for-47 in 2005 is the most attempts in a season by a Bengal without a miss). A boot for the books: Was it possibly the most celebrated PAT kick in NFL preseason history? Admittedly that s an obscure category, but the Bengals will challenge anyone to come up with a better nomination after WR Chad Ochocinco s successful one-pointer at New England on Aug. 20. Ochocinco was employed as coach Marvin Lewis emergency kicker because it had been determined in pregame warmups that Shayne Graham, the only true placekicker on the roster, was better off sitting out to rest a groin strain. The soccer-style kick deserves consideration because 1) Ochocinco is always a national media magnet, 2) he has expressed for years his affinity for both playing and watching soccer, 3) he drilled a strong kick that might have been good from 35 yards, and 4) without it, a 7-6 Bengals win could have been a 6-6 game headed for preseason overtime. Tell the world that Esteban Ochocinco is back, the most entertaining all-round footballer in the world, Ochocinco joked after the boot. Remember, I ve always said that soccer is my true No. 1 sport. QB J.T. O Sullivan, whose TD pass to Chris Henry provided the chance, gave the kick a more serious analysis. All joking aside, he kicked the ball through the uprights in an NFL preseason game, and it won the game, O Sullivan said. Whatever you say, those things (injuries) are going to happen in this in this league, and it s nice to have that insurance. Ochocinco also had one not-so-bad kickoff a 61-yarder to the New England nine-yard line. Lewis has indicated that Ochocinco, who said he kicked in high school, will remain the Bengals emergency kicker, but that he will not be used to replace Graham on a full-game basis if Graham needs further rest later in the season. Turnover tables are turned: Though the Bengals had a minus-two turnover differential in 2008, it was their first season minus under head coach Marvin Lewis. During Lewis full tenure ( ), Cincinnati ranks third in the NFL in best differential at plus-40. Prior to 2003, the Bengals had posted a minus differential for five straight years ( ). Last season, Denver was tied for last in the NFL with a minus-17 differential. Here are the top five teams in differential since 2003: TEAM TAKEAWAYS GIVEAWAYS DIFFERENTIAL Indianapolis New England Cincinnati San Diego Carolina Since 2003, when Lewis took over, Cincinnati has logged 194 takeaways, second in the league during that span to Baltimore (198). Baltimore leads the NFL during that span with 626, and Indianapolis is second at 594. A stat that matters: The Bengals are in regular-season play under Marvin Lewis when logging a plus in Page 7

The Bengals are 9-13 under Lewis (.409) when the differential has been even. More extensive league-wide numbers bear out the Bengals experience. College training camp, the Bengals were visited by former world heavyweight boxing champion Muhammad Ali. Ali traveled to Georgetown from his home in Louisville, Ky., and was introduced to the team on the field after practice by head coach Marvin Lewis. Greg Roberts, president and CEO of the Ali Center in Louisville, said Ali became interested in a visit after seeing HBO s Hard Knocks TV series about the Bengals. Muhammad is a big sports fan; anybody close by, he wants to see, Roberts said. He loves the Bengals. He loves Coach Lewis. He thinks a lot of Coach Lewis. We just came to honor the college and seeing Marvin was here, he wanted to make sure he could talk to Marvin and be a part of this. The Bengals far more than returned Ali s interest. His presence created a buzz unmatched by any celebrity to visit the team in recent memory. Players and coaches alike crowded in for the opportunity to be photographed with Ali. That s the man right there, said QB Carson Palmer. It s just amazing to see him in person. I ve seen all his fights on ESPN, but to see him right here in person is just awesome. In Lewis first season of 2003, the night before the Bengals would knock off a 9-0 Kansas City Chiefs team at Paul Brown Stadium, Lewis showed his players a movie clip that depicted Ali s stunning seventh-round TKO of Sonny Liston in his first title fight. This is one guy who when he talked, he backed it up, Lewis told the team during Ali s Georgetown visit. Some of you guys who like to talk... this is the guy that backed it up. This is a big deal, Lewis said later about the visit. This is someone who was at the pinnacle of sport, one of the greatest competitors and athletes of all time. Hard Knocks still hot through four: Hard Knocks 09: Training Camp with the Cincinnati Bengals continues to be a ratings hit for the HBO television network. Compared to 2008, when the Dallas Cowboys were featured, national household ratings for the first four shows are up 45 percent, and national household impressions are up 54 percent. The first four episodes originally aired on Aug. 12, 19, 26 and Sept. 2 were stronger in all demographic groups, but especially so among males ages They have delivered a 1.76 coverage rating and 186,000 average impressions, which is up 101 percent in rating and 106 percent in impressions compared to The numbers above do not include replays of the show, which air eight-to-10 times per week. The final episode in the series five week run will have its original airing at 10 p.m. EDT on Sept. 9. TV streak at 68: In each of the last 68 TV ratings weeks that have included a Bengals regular-season or postseason game, the Bengals have been the top-rated show among all programming in the Cincinnati market. The streak began on Dec. 5, 2004, when a wild Bengals win at Baltimore outpolled all other programs for the week. It hit 68 when the 2008 regular-season finale vs. Kansas City drew a 23.5 rating, easily outpolling the second-place program, which was also an NFL game Dolphins vs. Jets at The Bengals rating more than doubled the top non-sports program, Two and a Half Men, which scored The rating number indicates the percentage of market households tuned to the game including those not watching TV at the time. The highest Bengals rating during the streak has been 45.5 for the Pittsburgh playoff game on Jan. 8, The high rating of Bengals games has occurred despite the fact most games are played in the afternoon, when overall TV viewership is not as high as it is during the evening. Almost a half-century: For more than four decades, according to the highly respected Harris Poll, the NFL has been the most popular sport in America. In its most recent survey, released in January of this year, Harris reported that pro football is the favorite sport of more people (31 percent) than the combined total of the next three pro sports baseball (16 percent), auto racing (eight percent) and men s pro basketball (six percent). Pro football moved ahead of baseball as fans favorite in 1965 and has held the top spot ever since. Also, pro football has gained in popularity more than any other sport since 1985, with a seven percent increase (from 24 to 31 percent). The third-favorite sport in the January 2009 survey was college football at 12 percent, meaning that football is the favorite sport of 43 percent of America s fans. Bengal bites: WR Chad Ochocinco and LS/TE Brad St. Louis are the only players on the Bengals roster whose Cincinnati tenure predates the 2003 arrival of Marvin Lewis as head coach; St. Louis began his career in 2000 under head coach Bruce Coslet, and Ochocinco opened in 01 under Dick LeBeau... Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis led the NFL last season in percentage of successful coaches replay challenges, upheld on six of seven tries (85.7 percent). He tied for third in most total plays reversed with six, just one off the league lead... In six seasons under Lewis, the Bengals have averaged only 9.2 fumbles lost per season; prior to Lewis tenure, the Bengals average for 16-game seasons was 13.9 fumbles lost... The Bengals were 2-0 in 2008 in games when one player had 25 or more rushing attempts, and they are 22-1 in the last 23 regularseason games with a 25-carry runner. Both of last year s 25-carry games were posted by HB Cedric Benson... The 2008 Bengals season saw five two-point conversion tries, none successful; the Bengals went zero-for-two and opponents went zero-for-three. Page 8
