The fourth-ranked Navy lacrosse team continues its Patriot League season with a matchup against Lafayette. The Mids enter the contest with a 4-0 mark, including a 1-0 league record. Lafayette is 1-3 after last Saturday s 14-5 win over Wagner. Face-off is slated for noon at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. THE SERIES WITH LAFAYETTE... The two teams have met six previous times, with Navy dominating the series, 6-0. Navy and Lafayette faced each other four times from 1926 to 1931, with Navy winning all four games by a combined margin of The series was then renewed after a 73-year hiatus when Navy joined the Patriot League in Navy has won the last two meetings by a combined score of Navy has outscored the Leopards all-told, Both of the games since 2004 were Navy victories by the same 14-1 score. Five of the games have been played in Annapolis, where Navy has outscored Lafayette, A LOOK BACK.. William Wallace earned Most Valuable Player honors after leading Navy to a 9-5 victory over Bucknell in the second game of the First 4 played on the campus of the University of San Diego at Torero Stadium last Saturday night. Wallace won 16-of-17 faceoffs and scooped up a career-best 12 ground balls. The Navy offense also overcame a slow start to dominate the statistics. Navy outshot Bucknell, 37-15, and converted on 4-of-7 extra-man opportunities. Billy MIDSHIPMEN MEMOS... With the 9-5 win over Bucknell, Navy started 4-0 for the second time under head coach Richie Meade and first since Navy hasn t started 5-0 since the 1989 squad opened the season with a 6-0 record. The Mids have won 14 straight games at home against opponents that currently compete in the Patriot League. Their last home loss came in 1997 to Army, Navy had five players score three points against Bucknell. It was the first time this year that has happened and first time since the Patriot League Tournament title game last year against Army. Navy has won eight straight games against Patriot League foes and since joining the league in 2004, the Mids are 17-1 against PL opponents. Matt Russell recorded his 300th career save against Bucknell. The Richie Meade victory countdown is on. The Navy head coach needs just eight victories to reach 100 in his Navy career. The earliest Meade could reach 100 victories is the April 22 matchup against Johns Hopkins. Looney, Nick Mirabito, Jon Birsner, Ian Dingman and Tommy Wallin all scored three points each to lead Navy to the victory. Navy trailed the game 2-0, but scored five of the next six goals to take a 5-3 advantage just before halftime. Navy would stretch the lead to 7-4 after three quarters before settling in for the 9-5 triumph. The Navy defense, meanwhile, struggled at first allowing four goals on the first five Bucknell shots, but picked it up when it needed to. The Mids allowed just one second-half goal and limited Bucknell to a season-low 15 shots. The Bison were also held in check on the EMO, scoring just once on five opportunities. Navy scooped up 40 ground balls to Bucknell s 26, but went just 7-of-15 on clearing attempts. Bucknell was 11-of-13. Matt Russell also struggled in the cage, allowing five goals while making six saves. NAVY S PROBABLE LINEUP... Attack Yr. Ht. / Wt. The Mids avenged an 8-7 overtime loss to the Bison a year ago with the victory. Navy s 37 shots were the most this season. It also held Bucknell to 15 shots, the fewest since holding Lafayette to 15 in last year s contest. Bucknell had outshot Navy, 44-29, a year ago. Since the March 12, 2005, contest against Bucknell, Navy is 30-of-70 (.429) on the extra-man advantage. Navy went 16-of-17 (.941) at the face-off X against Bucknell, but it wasn t the best percentage in school history. Last year, three players combined to win 17-of-18 (.944) face-offs against Lafayette. Navy has now held four straight opponents to five or fewer goals for the first time since the last two games of the 1967 season and the first two games of 1968 (2, 5, 0, 3). Navy hasn t held five straight opponents to five or fewer goals since the last four games of 1964 and the first game of 1965 (4, 3, 4, 4, 1). HOME SWEET HOME... The Mids have enjoyed success over the years playing at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. Navy owns a 14-3 mark at home since the start of the 2004 season, outscoring its foes, (11.8 to 6.9 gpg). The Mids have allowed just three teams ( Georgetown, Ohio State and Johns Hopkins) to reach double digits in games played on their home field over the last two years. Navy is 1-0 this season at home after the Feb. 24 win over Ohio State. The Mids have now won six straight games at home, tied for the fourth-longest current streak in the NCAA (Massachusetts - 14; Virginia - 13; Cornell - 7; Navy - 6). Last year, Navy owned an impressive 7-1 mark at home with its lone loss as the hands of No. 5 Georgetown, who dealt the Mids an 11-6 setback on April 2-3. ROAD WARRIORS... With all of the success over the past two years for the Navy lacrosse team, much of it has come on the road. In true road games, dating back to the start of the 2004 season, Navy is 11-2, defeating eight ranked teams in the process, including last weekend s 11-3 win over North Carolina. Including neutral-site and road games together, Navy is 14-4 over the same span, with losses coming to Syracuse (2004) and Bucknell, Johns Hopkins and Virginia last season. Navy s 2006 schedule features two ranked teams on the road (North Carolina and Maryland).

GETTING DEFENSIVE... Through the first four games of the year, the Navy defense has allowed just 13 goals on 84 shots in bolting out to a 4-0 record. Three of the goals have come via man-up opportunities. Even allowing three goals, the man-down defense has been a strength. Navy s man-down unit is 16-of-19 for a kill percentage of.842. Navy allowed its first goals in the first and fourth quarters against North Carolina. Navy s first-quarter shutout streak ended at 30:43 as UNC scored the game s first goal just 43 seconds into the contest. The Mids fourth-quarter shutout FEWEST GOALS ALLOWED (SINCE 1940)... Year No. Goals / / / / / /?? * First number denotes fewest goals allowed in the season s first four games. Second number is five-game mark. streak was halted at 40:45 when UNC s Bart Wagner scored with 4:15 to play in the game. The 13 goals in the first four games are the fewest in 42 years when the 1964 team allowed 10 goals in the first four games of the year. Just four times since 1950, including this year, has Navy allowed 13 or fewer goals in the first four games. Navy has limited 16 of its last 38 opponents to five or fewer goals, and only five foes (Ohio State 2004, Army 2004, Syracuse 2004, Georgetown 2005 and Virginia 2005) have managed to reach double figures. Since 2004, Navy has held 19 of its 38 opponents to 25 or fewer shots. During that time frame, Navy is 18-1 (Ohio State 2004) when holding its foes to under 25 shots. Navy has lost just two games when holding foes to nine or fewer goals since 2004, posting a 29-2 mark. Both losses came in extra minutes during the 2005 campaign (Bucknell and Johns Hopkins). Since the start of the 2004 season, Navy has held 33 of its 38 foes under their scoring average entering the game. Just Lafayette, Ohio State and Syracuse in 2004 and Providence and Georgetown in 2005 have reached their averages. However, Providence and Lafayette reached their averages in the season opener, meaning both teams averaged 0.00 goals entering the game. TURNING IT AROUND... Navy has enjoyed success over the last two seasons that few schools nationally have experienced. Since the start of the 2004 season, Navy has put together a 31-7 record (.816). The 31 wins are the most in the country and the.816 winning percentage is second only to Johns Hopkins (30-4,.882). In the last two seasons, the Midshipmen have produced the top-two win totals in school history. Navy won 15 games in 2004 en route to its NCAA Championship game appearance, and last year the Mids produced 12 wins in earning their second-consecutive NCAA Tournament berth. This year s senior class has the opportunity to graduate as the winningest Navy class in school history. Since the beginning of the 2003 season, Navy owns a record (.725 winning percentage). The class of 1978 and 2005 finished their four years in Annapolis with 42 victories. EXTRA-SPECIAL TEAMS... Navy s EMO and man-down units have been spectacular this year. The Mids have connected on 9-of-22 EMO chances, while holding foes to convert on just 3-of-19 opportunities. Combined, Navy s special teams are 25-of-41 (.610). TRIUMPHANT RETURN... Junior Ian Dingman has made his presence felt in Navy s first four games of the season, leading the Mids in scoring with 15 points early on. He scored four points (3 g, 1 a) in the win over SJU, tallying his first point of the year with an assist late in the second quarter. Dingman then turned it on, scoring three straight goals spanning 10 minutes to turn a 6-1 Navy lead into a 9-1 Navy cushion. In the victory over Ohio State, Dingman scored four points (2 g, 2 a) to move into 19th place on the school s all-time scoring list with 110 points. He scored four more points (4 g, 0 a) in the triumph over North Carolina, marking the first time in his career that he has scored four points in three straight games. He added three points (1 g, 2 a) against Bucknell to again lead the team in scoring. Dingman returns following a year off after scoring 62 points as a sophomore and garnering second-team All-America honors while helping Navy to the 2004 national title game. The 62 points were the sixth most in school history and the second most by a Navy sophomore in school history, behind only Brendan Schneck s 78 points in His 36 goals were tied for the 13th most in a single season. He is one of four players in school history to score 100 points in his first two seasons at the Academy, joining Mike Herger ( ; 109 points), James Lewis ( ; 110 points) and Brendan Schneck ( ; 121 points). Dingman currently has 117 career points, good for 16th on the Navy career points list. THE PATRIOT LEAGUE... Pat. League Overall Team W L Pct. W L Pct. He currently has 69 career netters. He also ranks tied for 13th on the career assist list with 48. THE DISTRIBUTOR... Jon Birsner has been one of the most underrated players on the Navy roster the last few seasons, but his play-making skills have proven to be invaluable. Birsner distributed four assists in Navy s season-opening win over Saint Joseph s. It marked the fifth time in his career that he has had at least four assists in a game. He then added a goal and an assist in the victory over Ohio State. He scored a season-best five points (3 g, 2 a) in the win over North Carolina. He added three more points (1 g, 2 a) in the victory over Bucknell. For the season, Birsner is second on the team with 14 points (5 g, 9 a). The nine helpers have moved him into seventh place on the Navy career assists list as well as sixth on the Patriot League all-time assist chart. He has 78 career helpers. With 22 more assists, he will become just the fourth Navy player in school history to record 100 career helpers. The 78 career assists are also tied for the second most in the country among active players, just behind Delaware s Cam Howard (80). He has recorded 24 career multi-assist games in just 48 career games. He tallied his 100th-career point in the Patriot League Championship last season against rival Army, becoming just the 25th Navy player to accomplish the feat. He currently has 111 career points, good for 20th on the Navy career list. MIRABITO OFF TO STRONG START IN SOPHOMORE SEASON... Nick Mirabito was one of the nation s top-scoring freshmen last year. Now a year older, he is looking for the same type of sophomore season he enjoyed a year ago. The sophomore attack tied for the team lead with four points in the season-opening win over Saint Joseph s. He connected on his fifth-career hat trick and the four points were a career best. Mirabito then scored three points (2 g, 1 a) in the win over Ohio State, marking the eighth time he has scored at least three points in a game. He scored three points for the third time this season with three points (2 g, 1 a) against Bucknell. The goals pushed his goal scoring streak to 10 games. He netted two points (1 g, 1 a) in the win over North Carolina. He has scored in all 20 games in his career and has netted at least two points in 15 of them, including six of the last seven games, dating back to last year. ON THE ATTACK... Navy s attackmen appear to be in mid-season form after three games. Navy s starting three attack, Jon Birsner, Nick Mirabito and Ian Dingman, combined for 12 points (6 g, 6 a) in the season-opening win over Saint Joseph s. The trio also combined for 15 shots and five ground balls. That total already equaled the season-high 12 points scored by last year s three starting attack against Colgate, Lehigh and Army. Last year s three starting attackmen were Birsner, Mirabito and Ben Horn. The front-line attack unit scored nine points against both Ohio State and Bucknell. Against North CArolina, the trio tallied 11 points, including a combined nine from Birsner and Dingman to lead the Mids to their third victory of the year. Each starting attackman (Dingman, Birsner and Mirabito) has scored at least two points in each game. The starting attack are the top three scorers on the team and have combined for 23 goals and 18 assists. The 41 points are 58.5 percent of Navy s scoring this year. FOUR-ASSIST GAMES... Saint Joseph s Ohio State North Carolina Bucknell Lafayette Colgate Lehigh Holy Cross Georgetown Maryland Army Johns Hopkins * The totals (G-A-Pts.) are of the three starters at that position. PLAYING THE BEST BRINGS OUT THE BEST... The Mids have consistently played one of the toughest schedules in the country. Since 1997, Navy has played at least six ranked teams each season and heading into the 2006 campaign, the Mids are slated to face seven ranked programs. Navy played nine ranked teams in 2005 and turned in a 6-3 record. The Mids played a top-10 ranked team in six of their last eight contests last spring, with Navy recording a 5-3 mark. Since the start of the 2004 season, Navy is 16-6 against ranked teams, after last weekend s 11-3 win over 14th-ranked North Carolina. Five of the losses were to foes ranked in the top seven nationally. The others were to 20th-ranked Ohio State (2004) and unranked Bucknell last year. During that same time frame, the Mids are a stellar 15-1 against unranked opponents. BALANCING ACT... Last spring Navy was one of the most balanced teams in the country with six players tallying at least 20 points. The Mids were one-of-10 teams nationally with six players recording at least 20 points. Navy was also one-of-seven teams around the country with five players netting at least 17 goals. Navy, Delaware and Mount St. Mary s were the only schools last season to have five players score at least 17 goals, four

5 players produce at least 30 points and six players record at least 20 points. Already this season, 12 players have scored goals and 13 players have scored points. For the entire 2005 season, 17 players scored goals and 19 players netted points. YOUNG DEFENSEMEN GROW UP FAST... Navy s starting three close defensemen, Jordan DiNola, Brendan Teague and Andrew Dow, entered the season with 12 career starts and just 48 career appearances between them, with Dow accounting for all 12 starts and 30 of the appearances. The three were a part of a strong defensive effort that allowed just 17 shots and two goals to Saint Joseph s. However, just nine of the shots were registered in the first three quarters before Meade emptied his bench early in the fourth quarter. The trio then helped limit Ohio State to just three goals on 25 shots. Just nine of the shots came after halftime and just two of the goals scored were when the teams were even strength. In last week s performance, the Mids held North Carolina to equal its lowest goal total in almost 40 years and limited the Tar Heels to just 27 shots and three goals. The group also spearheaded a lopsided ground ball advantage. The Mids defense struggled against Bucknell, holding the Bison to five goals on 15 shots. Navy again, however, dominated the ground ball category by a margin. THE LAST LINE OF DEFENSE... Matt Russell is already off to another outstanding start and hopes to lead Navy to Philadelphia on Memorial Day weekend. Russell allowed just two goals while making four saves in the win over Saint Joseph s. Russell made 10 saves, including two spectacular back-to-back saves after OSU had crawled to within 6-3, against Ohio State. He allowed just three goals for a save percentage of.769, a new career high. In the win over North Carolina, Russell allowed just three goals and made nine saves. He made six saves while allowing five goals against Bucknell. The win moved his career record to Russell s career GAA is well ahead of pace for the NCAA career record. He currently sports a 6.32 career GAA, well ahead of the NCAA record of 7.88 set by Justin Cynar of Cornell from He has saved at least 50 percent of the shots he has faced in 29-of-36 career games. When Russell stops at least 50 percent of his shots, Navy is 27-2, with the lone losses coming to Johns Hopkins (4/24/04) and Bucknell (3/12/05). Russell earned First-Team All-America honors as a sophomore and was the Kelly Award recipient as the nation s top goalie in He followed up that performance by garnering second-team recognition as a junior. He was recently named the preseason first-team All-America goalie by Face-off Magazine and earned a spot on the Tewaaraton Award watch list for He earned the first Patriot League Defensive Player-of-the-Week honors in 2006 following his performance against Ohio State, and has won the honor a total of six times. JUST IN CASE... Colin Finnegan has played well when needed and has given the Mids a solid back-up to All-American Matt Russell. Finnegan, a junior, has played in two games so far, making nine saves while allowing no goals. He made a career-best seven saves, all coming in the fourth quarter, of Navy s 12-2 win over Saint Joseph s in the season opener. He was inserted into a 0-0 game against Ohio State last Friday after Matt Russell received a slashing penalty early in the first quarter. Finnegan responded by making two saves on the OSU extra-man opportunity, including one from pointblank range to keep the Buckeyes off the board. LOONEYS DO IT ALL... The Looney brothers have been instrumental in Navy s resurgence over the last three seasons and look to keep it going in their last season together on the field. In the opener against Saint Joseph s, the duo combined for a relatively quiet two points (1 g, 1 a). However, the pair accounted for five shots and three ground balls. The pair picked it up in the win over Ohio State, producing five points (3 g, 2 a), 17 of Navy s 29 shots and picked up four ground balls. Steve had a strong game against North Carolina, tallying four points (3 g, 1 a) and picking up a team-high six ground balls. Billy, meanwhile, was held scoreless, snapping an eight-game scoring streak dating back to last year. Against Bucknell, Billy tallied a season-best three points (2 g, 1 a), while Steve saw an eight-game scoring streak snapped. For their careers, they have now produced 112 points (79 g, 33 a), 208 ground balls and 324 shots. Both Billy and Steve are moving up on the Navy career ground ball and shot charts and were named to the preseason Tewaaraton Award watch list and preseason third-team All-America selections. THEY JUST KEEP COMING... Navy s depth at midfield is one of the big reasons the Mids are off to a 4-0 start. Twenty-one different midfielders have seen action this year, including nine freshmen or sophomores. The 21 players have picked up 66 ground balls and are part of a unit that has allowed just 13 goals in the first four games. THE NATIONAL POLLS... STX USILA Coaches Poll (3/13) 1. Maryland 2. When Chris Pieczonka graduated last year following a career that saw him finish in the NCAA top 10 for face-off wins and percentage, many around the lacrosse community thought Navy would struggle at the X. However, junior William Wallace has dominated so far this season, giving the Mids an added boost to their high-powered offense. Wallace owns a.717 winning percentage this year, winning 43-of-60 draws. He won 6-of-12 face-offs in the win over Saint Joseph s, then won 11-of-15 against Ohio State and 10-of-16 against North Carolina. Wallace dominated against Bucknell, winning 16-of-17 draws, and scooping up 12 ground balls earning the game s Most Valuable Player award. In the last three games, Wallace has won 37-of-48 (.771) face-offs. For his career, he is 123-of-189 for a career percentage of.651. Last season, he tied an NCAA record for win percentage in a game (1.000) when he went 13-of-13 against Lafayette. COMING OUT IN DROVES... Not only has Navy had major success on the field, but also at the turnstiles. The Mids averaged 5,332 fans per game at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium in 2005, the most in the country. Navy was the only school in the Patriot League to average at least 1,000 fans per game last spring, and only one school in the league, Army, drew what Navy averages. Last April, the third-largest documented home crowd in school history (14,124) watched Navy defeat Maryland, 9-8. It was the largest crowd to watch a regular-season Division I lacrosse game last season. In the following home game, a crowd of 12,117 watched Navy beat arch rival Army, 12-9, in the Star Game. It was the fourth largest in school history and it marked the first time in school history that Navy drew over 10,000 fans in back-toback games. Additionally, it was the largest documented crowd to see an Army-Navy lacrosse game. More than 2,000 fans braved bitterly cold wind chills in Navy s home opener on Feb. 24 against Ohio State. NATIONAL EXPOSURE... Navy s lacrosse resurgence over the last few seasons has increased its national exposure. Navy appeared on national television six times in 2005 and in 2006, six regular-season contests will be aired, including five by CSTV. Home games against Georgetown (4/1) and Johns Hopkins (4/22) will be carried by CSTV, while the network will also air the Mids Patriot League battle against Bucknell in San Diego (3/11) and the annual showdown between Navy and Maryland (4/7). ESPNU is slated to pick up the Army-Navy Star Game at West Point s Michie Stadium. Time-Warner Sports will carry the Mids battle at Colgate on March 18, and CSTV will then air the game on a tape-delayed basis. Over the last two years, Navy has been on television 12 times, posting a 7-5 record. Navy is 4-1 on CSTV all-time and 3-4 on the ESPN family of networks. NAVY S TRIPLE-OPTION WEEKEND... The weekend of April is a must-see event for every single Navy athletics fan, as the Naval Academy hosts three major sporting events. Fans wishing to attend all three events can buy a Triple Option Weekend ticket package for just $10 per person at (click twice on the icon that says buy tickets online) or by calling US4-NAVY. Festivities will get underway on Friday, April 21 with the annual Blue-Gold Football Game, which will be played at Navy- Marine Corps Memorial Stadium at 7 p.m. Admission for the football game is $5 and there will be a $5 fee for parking. On Saturday, the Navy lacrosse team will play host to Johns Hopkins in a nationally- televised contest starting at 12 noon. Navy will attempt to set the NCAA single-game regular-season attendance record of 19,850. Two years ago, Navy drew 18,694 for the Hopkins game, which is the second-largest recorded regular-season lacrosse crowd in NCAA history. Tickets are $7 for adults and $3 for students. There will be a $5 parking fee. On Sunday, the baseball team will be in the spotlight as Navy and Army will tangle in a doubleheader at Baltimore's Camden Yards. First pitch is 12 noon. Tickets are $7 for adults and $3 for children, and can be purchased online through by phone at US4-NAVY ( ) and through the Orioles by phone at BIRD ( ). ABOUT THE SCHEDULE... Navy will once again play one of the toughest schedules in the nation. According to the preseason Face-Off Yearbook national poll, Navy will face seven of the top 25 teams in the country and two more that are receiving votes. Included in that tally are three of the top six and five of the top 15. Last season, nine of Navy s 16 games came against teams ranked in the top 25 at the time of the game, including seven teams ranked in the top nine. Seven of Navy s last eight games were against teams ranked in the top 16. Since the start of the 2004 season, Navy has played 22 of its 38 games against teams ranked in the top 25, posting a stellar 16-6 record. Two of the six losses have come to the No. 1-ranked team in the country at the time (Johns Hopkins twice). Other losses to ranked teams in that span were against No. 20 Ohio State (2004), No. 4 Syracuse (2004), No. 7 Georgetown (2005) and No. 6 Virginia (2005). In fact, in the new decade beginning in 2000, 52 of Navy s 90 games (57.8 percent) have been against ranked teams. In those games, Navy is (.538 winning percentage). Six of those losses have come to Johns Hopkins. In games against unranked foes since 2000, Navy is 33-4 (.892 winning percentage). The losses have come to UMBC (2001), Air Force and Penn State (2003) and Bucknell (2005).

7 SOME PRESEASON PUBLICITY... Navy finds itself in familiar position entering the 2006 lacrosse season. The Mids are ranked seventh in both the Face-off Magazine preseason poll as well as the Lacrosse Magazine poll. It marks the 24th consecutive poll Navy has been ranked and the 23rd consecutive poll Navy has been ranked in the top 10. Navy started last year fourth in the Face-off Magazine preseason poll, and were 14th in In addition to the high team ranking, several Mids were named on preseason All-America lists. Senior goalkeeper Matt Russell headlines this year s list of Preseason All-Americans. Russell, a Second-Team All- American last spring, was named to the preseason first team. The Looney brothers were named to the third team, while senior Jon Birsner and junior Ian Dingman were honorable mention selections. For the first time in nearly a quarter of a century, Navy had two players named First-Team All-Americans. Graham Gill and Mitch Hendler were named first-team members after leading the Mids to their second-straight Patriot League title and a second-consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance. The last time two Navy players were named to the first team was in 1981 when Syd Abernethy and Michael MacLaughlin garnered first-team kudos. Since the 1981 campaign, only seven players have earned First-Team All-America status. In addition to Gill and Hendler, Matt Russell (Second Team), Billy Looney (Third Team), Steve Looney (Third Team) and Jon Birsner (Honorable Mention) gained All-America kudos. Nine Mids earned All-Patriot League recognition last season. Graham Gill, Billy Looney, Chris Pieczonka, Mitch Hendler and Matt Russell earned spots on the first team, while Jon Birsner, Steve Looney, Clipper Lennon and Mike Felber were on the second team. Four of the seven players honored return to the field for the Mids this season. Eight players earned invites to the 2006 U.S. Men s Lacrosse Team tryouts. Jon Birsner, Ian Dingman, Graham Gill, Mitch Hendler, Billy Looney, Steve Looney, Chris Pieczonka and Matt Russell were all invited to the tryouts. BIRSNER, RUSSELL NAMED CO-CAPTAINS... All-Americans Jon Birsner and Matt Russell have been selected by their teammates to serve as co-captains of the Navy lacrosse team this spring. An Honorable Mention All-American a year ago, Birsner is the point man in Navy's offensive scheme. Arguably one of the most underrated players in the country, Birsner paced the Mids in scoring last spring with 42 points on 11 goals and a team-best 31 assists. Along with Russell, Birsner was the recipient of the 2005 Lt. Robert T. Bianchi Award presented to Navy's most valuable player. One of Navy's most decorated players in the history of Navy lacrosse, Russell was named a Second-Team All-American, a First-Team All-Patriot League selection and the Patriot League Goalkeeper of the Year last season. The co-recipient of the Lt. Robert T. Bianchi Award, Russell owned the nation's second-best goals-against average (6.69), allowing 106 goals in nearly 952 minutes of play. He has led Navy to a 26-5 record when he is the goalkeeper of record. Birsner and Russell are the first Navy lacrosse co-captains since Tom Calabrese and Neil Duffy captained the 1984 squad, leading the Mids to a 6-6 record, a win over fourth-ranked Virginia and a No. 13 final ranking. 8 HEAD COACH RICHIE MEADE... North Carolina (1976) at Navy (12th season) Overall (16th season) After leading the Midshipmen to back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances for the first time since the 1992, 93 and 94 seasons, 2004 National Coach of the Year Richie Meade enters his 16th season as a collegiate head coach and 12th at the Naval Academy knowing there is unfinished business. Though playing in the 2004 National Championship thrust Navy back into the national limelight, the Mids fell two goals short of claiming their first NCAA lacrosse title in 2004 and two goals shy of returning to the national semifinals in 05. The shortcomings have left a void for Meade and his Midshipmen, but they eagerly await the opportunity to battle for the 2006 National Championship. Meade has led the Mids to eight or more wins in five of the last-six seasons, including the last two years in which Navy posted a school-record 15 wins in 2004 and the second-most wins in 2005 with 12. Navy owns a two-year 12-1 (.923) record in Patriot League action and has won at least a share of the regular-season title twice and has won the tournament twice. After playing in the 2004 National Championship, the hunger to make a return trip was a driving force throughout the 2005 campaign. It was that drive that helped the Mids overcome obstacles thrown their direction every step of the way, which included multiple injuries. Despite being short-handed and banged up most of the season, the Mids produced a 12-4 record, claimed their second-consecutive Patriot League Tournament title and made a return trip to the NCAA Tournament as the fifth seed. The Mids produced a first-round victory over Delaware at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium, but dropped a two-goal decision against sixth-ranked Virginia at Homewood Field in Baltimore in the quarterfinals. The last time Navy won back-toback first round games was the 1987, 88 and 89 seasons in which the Mids claimed opening-round wins over Brown, Harvard and Penn, respectively. Seven of Navy s last eight games of the season were against nationally-ranked opponents and the Mids posted a 4-3 record which featured a pair of victories over arch rival Army. Navy has won ninestraight games against the Black Knights, claiming eight-consecutive N-Stars. The Midshipmen also posted a 9-8 win over Maryland during that eightgame stretch, their first win over the Terps in Annapolis since It also marked the first time since 1980 and 81 in which Navy has won back-toback contests against Maryland.
