WBI: The Women s Basketball Invitational is in its fifth season as a postseason tournament. The competition features 16 teams from across the country and four rounds which are all played on campus sites from the round of 16 to the championship. Potential Quarterfinal Opponents: If Boise State were to advance with a victory on Thursday the Broncos would head to the state of Texas to play the winner of Thursday s Stephen F. Austin vs. Texas State game on either Saturday or Sunday. SETTING THE SCENE Recently for Boise State: Boise State is coming off a MW tournament quarterfinal loss to Wyoming last Tuesday in Las Vegas. Boise State s Record: The Broncos are now overall on the year and went 12-6 in conference action, good for a tie for third place in the final MW standings. About Grand Canyon: The Antelopes are in the first year of their transition from NCAA division II to division I. As a result, they were not eligible to compete in the Western Athletic Conference tournament Recently for Grand Canyon: The Antelopes finished the regular season on a four-game win streak including a home sweep over New Mexico State (66-56) and Texas-Pan American (77-55) on the last weekend. Grand Canyon s Record: GCU finished the regular season at 21-8 overall and 10-6 in MW play, good for third place in the WAC. Boise State at Home: The Broncos went 11-4 in Taco Bell Arena this year. They are (.654 pct.) all-time in Taco Bell Arena. They are 1-0 in Bronco Gym this season. Boise State on the Road: After dropping their first six road games of the season the Broncos have gone 5-3 since and are now 5-9 on the road overall, the total includes the neutral site MW Tournament loss. Grand Canyon at Home: The Antelopes were hard to beat at home in Antelope Gymnasium where they went 11-1 overall, 7-1 in conference. Leading the Broncos: Deanna Weaver enters the tournament leading the team in scoring average at 13.3 points per game. Miquelle Askew was second in scoring average at 13.1 ppg but leads the team in total points with 393. Weaver has not played in enough games to be ranked by MW, but Askew is 12th MW. Lexie Der follows those two at 10.9 ppg but is injured and will not play. Yaiza Rodriguez Ortego is third on the active list at 9.8 ppg. Weaver leads the team on the glass at 6.9 rebounds per game. Leading Grand Canyon: Deanna Daniels leads the Antelopes in scoring at 14.4 points per game (9th WAC) and Kaitlyn Petersen at 13.7 ppg (11th WAC). Johnna Brown led GCU on the glass at 8.9 rebounds per game (4th WAC), followed by Judy Jones at 8.5 rpg. Boise State as a Team: On the year Boise State is averaging 71.3 points (6th MW) and 37.1 rebounds (10th MW) per game. Defensively the Broncos have allowed 68.8 points (7th MW) and 39.2 boards (6th MW) per game. Grand Canyon as a Team: The Antelopes average 69.9 points (6th WAC) and 37.5 rebounds (7th WAC) per game, while allowing 60.4 points (1st WAC) and 37.1 rebounds per game (1st WAC). The Coaches: Trent May is in his seventh season at Grand Canyon where he is , his career mark is the same. 4 Bronco Notebook: Game Preview BRONCO NOTEBOOK WEAVER AND RODRIGUEZ GARNER MW HONORS The Mountain West Conference released its list of women s basketball postseason honors on Sunday (March 9) and among those recognized were Boise State s Deanna Weaver and Yaiza Rodriguez Ortego who racked up multiple honors each. Weaver a junior wing from Santa Clara, Calif., became eligible to play just before league started after sitting out the fall because of NCAA transfer rules. She made an immediate impression on the conference coaches who named her MW Newcomer of the Year. However, that was not it for the Oregon transfer who earned a trio of honors including first-team all-conference and all-defensive team honors. During league play Weaver led the team in scoring at 13.2 points per game, rebounding at 6.5 rpg, blocks with 12 and steals with 32. She was ranked 12th in the conference for both scoring and rebounding, as well as tied for second in steals. Yaiza Rodriguez Ortego was one of a five freshmen on a young Bronco roster this season. The native of Spain started every game at point guard for Boise State making a name for herself during league play to earn Co-Freshman of the Year honors with Colorado State s Ellen Nystrom. Like Weaver, Rodriguez Ortego earned multiple honors also being named to the MW All-Freshmen Team. Rodriguez, a rookie from Barcelona, Spain, averaged 9.9 points, 2.4 rebounds, 3.4 assists and 1.2 steals per game in Mountain West play. She shot 38.0 percent from the field, 37 percent from beyond the arc and 80.4 percent from the free throw line. Her assist average ranked 10th in league play, while her free throw percentage was sixth and 3-point percentage was 11th among all players. NATIONAL POSTSEASON TOURNAMENTS Tournaments All-Time: This will be Boise State s sixth national postseason tournament alltime in program history. Postseason Record: Boise State is currently 1-6 in postseason play. AIAW: Boise State went 0-2 in the 1975 Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women s national tournament. NCAA: The Broncos have reached two NCAA Tournaments in 1994 and 2007 losing each time in the first round. WNIT: Boise State has also gone to the Women s National Invitation Tournament on two occasions in 1998 and 2008 reaching the second round last time out. WBI: This is the first trip to the Women s Basketball Invitational for the Broncos. Under Coach Presnell: Head coach Gordy Presnell is the first Boise State coach to take three teams into postseason play in program history: 2007 NCAA, 2008 WNIT and 2014 WBI. ROSTER NOTES Starters Back: Boise State returns three starters off last year s squad in senior guard Diana Lee, redshirt-junior guard Brandi Henton and redshirt-sophomore forward Lexie Der. Broncos Back: The Broncos return five letterwinners and two redshirts from last year, the letterwiiners are Lee, Henton, Der, Miquelle Askew (So., C), Kayla Reinhart (So., G), Kinzi Poteet (R-Sr., F) and Keiahnna Engel (R-So., G). What s New: Boise State added seven new faces to the roster led by transfers Deanna Weaver (Jr., F, Oregon), Hailey Laird (Jr., G, SW Oregon), Tonishia Childress (Fr., G, Las Vegas, Nev.), Kenna McDavis (Fr., F, Phoenix, Ariz.), Brittney Pahukoa (Fr., G, Lake Stevens, Wash.), Brooke Pahukoa (Fr., G, Lake Stevens, Wash.) and Yaiza Rodriguez Ortego (Fr., Esplugues de Llobregat, Spain). Who Will Miss : Both seniors Kinzi Poteet and Diana Lee will miss the season because of injury. Youth Movement: With both seniors out of commission the Broncos feature a youthful look with five freshmen, four sophomores and three juniors. The Broncos started primarily two freshmen and three sophomores prior to the start of conference play. Deanna Weaver has moved into the starting lineup now that she is eligible(dec. 29) following the NCAA transfer rule of sitting one year. Young Starting Lineup: After a quick national survey by the Boise State Sports Information Department and Mountain West Conference media relations department, it was believed that Boise State had the third youngest starting lineup in the nation when it featured three sophomores and two freshmen during the nonconference portion of the schedule. International Flare: Boise State has three international players on its roster, two Canadians in Diana Lee and Lexie Der, while Yaiza Rodriguez Ortego is from Spain. All three have represented their nations in international youth competitions. Top Scoring Individual Performances: The season high in points was recorded by Miquelle Askew with 34 against Utah State* (Feb. 8), followed by Deanna Weaver with 33 at New Mexico (Feb. 12), Brooke Pahukoa with 26 against College of Idaho (Nov. 20), Deanna Weaver s 25 versus San Diego State (Jan. 8) and Miquelle Askew s 23 against Cal State Fullerton (Dec. 29). Four were accomplished at home in Taco Bell Arena or *Bronco Gym. The top road performance was 33 points by Weaver at New Mexico. Most Double Digit Scoring Games: Miquelle Askew has recorded the most games with double figure points with 23 this year and 29 in her career. Yaiza Rodriguez Ortego has tallied 16 double digit point games, while Deanna Weaver has 14 and Lexie Der had Point Games: Miquelle Askew recorded a career-high 34 points in Bronco Gym against Utah State (Feb. 8), that is the first 30-plus point game since Nicole Brady scored 30 at Utah State on Nov. 23, Deanna Weaver followed Askew in the next game with 33 points at New Mexico. 20 Point Games: Miquelle Askew has reached 20-plus points a team-high five times this year with a high of 34 against Utah State (Feb. 8). Deanna Weaver is next with three, Yaiza Rodriguez Ortego and Lexie Der have two each, Brooke Pahukoa has accomplished it once each. Balanced Attack: Boise State has had a relatively balanced attack this year with six players averaging between 13.3 and 6.7 points per game. Deanna Weaver and Miquelle Askew lead the team averaging 13.3 and 13.1 points per game respectively, followed by Lexie Der at 10.9 ppg and Yaiza Rodriguez Ortego at 9.8 ppg. INDIVIDUAL REBOUNDING Double Digits: Four Broncos have combined for 10 games with 10-plus rebounds, led by Lexie Der, Miquelle Askew and Deanna Weaver with three each, while Keiahnna Engel has done it once each. Five or More Per Game: Miquelle Askew has a team-high 22 games with five or more boards; Lexie Der has 17; Deanna Weaver has tallied at least five rebounds in 16-of-20 games played to date; while Kenna McDavis has 10. 6 Bronco Notebook: Team Notes INDIVIDUAL SEASON HONORS MW Player of the Week (Dec. 30): Miquelle Askew was named Mountain Wet Player of the Week on Dec. 30 for leading the Broncos to a victory over Cal State Fullerton with a double-double on 23 points and 13 rebounds, both career highs. MW Player of the Week (Jan. 20): Lexie Der was named Mountain West Player of the Week on Jan. 20 after leading the Broncos to a sweep over Nevada and at Utah State. She averaged 16 points and 9.5 rebounds during the week, as well as recording her third doubledouble of the year at Utah State with 19 points and 11 rebounds to lead Boise State to first road win of the year. TEAM SCORING Scoring Points: The Broncos run a fast paced scoring offense which has them averaging 71.3 points per game to rank sixth in the Mountain West and 90th nationally. Below 70: The key for Boise State is keeping the opponent below 70 points, the Broncos are 14-2 this season when they do and 3-11 when they do not. Double Digit Deficits: Boise State has rallied twice from doubledigit deficits and lost twice when leading by double-figure points. He brought with him a mild and laid back demeanor, 18 years of head coaching experience and a long record of success. Upon his arrival on campus, Presnell made an immediate impact on the Broncos. Presnell inherited a program that had not experienced a winning season in the previous seven years. He immediately earned the trust and respect of everyone involved with the program. He slowly rebuilt the team s identity instilling a sense of confidence and purpose. In the first eight years under his direction, the Broncos have gone (.546) overall recording four winning seasons and one at.500. After going in his first year ( ) the Broncos recorded four consecutive-winning seasons, including a schoolrecord 24 wins in both the (24-9) and (24-8) campaigns. Presnell s teams have gone (.484) in conference games and an impressive (.68.3) at home in Boise, including a perfect 14-0 in Combined with his upbeat coaching personality and knowledge of the game, Presnell has led the Bronco program through a renaissance, becoming winners on and off the court. His teams are routinely ranked among the top scoring and rebounding teams in the conference and have set numerous school records along the way. In eight years, his teams set the school s season rebounding record three times and the scoring record twice. Program honors during his tenure at Boise State include: winning back-to-back Western Athletic Conference regular-season crowns in 2007 and 2008; the 2007 WAC Tournament title; one NCAA Tournament appearance in 2007 and one WNIT second-round appearance in 2008; seven postseason all-conference honors, six conference all-freshmen team members, one conference newcomer of the year, two conference all-defensive team honors, three conference alltournament team honors with one tournament MVP; and a combined 39 academic all-conference honors by 15 individuals. In 2007, Presnell led the team to new heights with a 24-9 overall record, they won the league regularseason crown and WAC Tournament title advancing to the program s first postseason national tournament since the 1998 WNIT. For his coaching performance he was named the WAC and WBCA Division I Regional Coach of the Year. PRIOR TO BOISE STATE Prior to taking over at Boise State, Presnell coached for 18 successful years at Seattle Pacific University in Washington. At SPU, he inherited a program that had not recorded a winning season in the previous nine years. He built the Falcons into a NCAA Division II national power, accumulating an overall record of 396 victories with 127 defeats (.757). Along the way his teams amassed an average of 22 wins per season while claiming seven conference championships, including four of his last five seasons. In addition, his teams were an impressive (.884) at home in Broughman Pavilion, including five unbeaten home seasons. On the national scene under Presnell, the Falcons advanced to nine-straight ( ) and 10 of 11 NCAA Division II tournaments while he was in Seattle. Overall, Seattle Pacific made postseason appearances in 13 of his 18 years, 10 NCAA and three NAIA. Presnell s teams reached three NCAA Division II Elite Eights and advanced to the 2005 national title game. At the time of his departure from Seattle Pacific in the summer of 2005, Presnell was ranked tied for 10thplace nationally among NCAA Divison II coaches for win percentage (.757) and 21st for total victories. COACHING HIGHLIGHTS In 26 years as a collegiate head coach Presnell has experienced 22 winning seasons and one at.500. His teams have won a combined nine regular-season titles, seven at SPU and two at Boise State. In addition, he has guided 15 of his 26 squads into postseason national tournaments. During his career he has been named conference coach of the year eight times, WBCA Regional Coach of the Year five times (four at NCAA Division II level and one at Division I), and the WBCA NCAA Division II National Coach of the Year twice. His coach of the year honors now total 15 in 26 years. His student-athletes have accumulated numerous honors along the way: one All-American; six individuals have earned nine honorable mention All-American awards; five league players of the year; eight freshman/newcomers of the year; 29 players have combined for 47 all-conference honors; six conference all-freshmen team members; two all-defensive team members; 30 individuals have combined for 78 academic all-conference honors; 10 combined for 12 national academic honors including two academic All- Americans. PERSONAL Presnell, a Lapwai, Idaho, native graduated from Northwest Nazarene University in Nampa, Idaho, in 1983 with a B.A. in physical education. He continued his studies in physical education at Seattle Pacific University, where he earned a master s degree in He and his wife, former SPU gymnast Susan Nolte, live in Meridian, Idaho.
