2 Head oach tanley edwine tanley edwine Head ross ountry oach ixth ear t ansas/12th verall rkansas 85 s a world-class track athlete, an assistant coach at one of the top collegiate programs in the country, and a head coach in his first five years at ansas, tanley edwine has always been a believer and an achiever. ow in his sixth season at the helm of ansas men's and women's track and field and cross country teams, edwine has turned what some called a rebuilding project into a solidified program. In edwine's first five seasons, 17 ansas athletes have achieved 30 ll-merican honors, and the men's and women's teams have combined to set over 50 new school records and break the all-time top-five list in over 60 events. he 2002 men's indoor team's eighth-place finish at the hampionships marked the second time in two years for the tracksters, which was an improvement over the 47th place showing before edwine in ansas men's indoor roster had not recorded a top-10 finish since 1989 when the team tied for fourth. he Jayhawk men also tied for 21st place in the outdoor season which was the best finish by a outdoor team since edwine and both the 2001 and 2002 indoor men's teams have already been enshrined in the Hall of Fame for the eighth-place finishes. In the track season, edwine produced eight Big 12 champions, 21 total qualifiers and two individual national titlists. In addition, the 2002 squad set four outdoor and seven indoor school records and one all-time collegiate record. he men's indoor roster finished seventh in the conference and eighth in the nation while the women ended the indoor season sixth in the conference. he Jayhawk men gave a fourth-place performance at the Big 12 utdoor hampionships and then finished 21st nationally as the women took eighth place at the conference meet. he 2005 indoor season saw the women finish seventh in the conference, while the men came in eighth. lso in 2005, oach edwine guided pole vaulter my Linnen to and Big 12 hampionships in her event. In the 2005 outdoor season, the Jayhawk men had a fourth-place performance at the Big 12 hampionships and then finished 25th nationally as the women took sixth place at the outdoor conference meet and 29th nationally. edwine mentored seven different athletes to a total of nine ll-merica awards in his first year at ansas and then in 2002, seven athletes brought home a total of eight ll-merica titles. his past season edwine oversaw Jeremy Mims, heldon Battle, Brooklyn Hann, my Linnen, and Ekaterina ultanova all garner ll-merican accolades in outdoor track. dditionally, edwine guided athletes to success in national and international competition. In the summer of 2003, three athletes qualified for the F Indoor hampionships and two athletes were finalists at the F utdoor hampionships. lso in the summer of 2002, five of edwine's athletes were named F Junior ll-mericans, including one F champion. In the spring and summer of 2001, had three athletes qualify for the F Indoor hampionships, two athletes compete at the F utdoor hampionships, two athletes set a total of three national records, one athlete compete at the IF World hampionships in Edmonton, anada, and two athletes competed at the World niversity Games in Beijing, hina. his past summer has been no exception to Jayhawk success on the international track circuit. Paul Hefferon captured silver in the 5000 meter race at the Junior Pan m Games in Windsor, ntario, while Jeremy Mims has been sprinting to victory at numerous meets across Europe. edwine's 2004 men's cross country team tied its Big 12 and regional finishes from the previous season. he 2004 women's team tied their tenth place Big 12 performance from the 2003 season and finished 16th at the Midwest egionals. Both teams will look to build on those results in the upcoming 2005 season and qualify as a team for the hampionships. In addition to the team finishes, oach edwine mentored Benson hesang to a first place finish at the Big 12 hampionships and a seventh place result as the school's lone hampionships qualifier. Before edwine was selected as head coach at ansas on May 25, 2000, he had a six-year stint as head coach at the niversity of ulsa. t ulsa, edwine's athletes broke over 70 school records, most on multiple occasions. In many events, edwine's athletes completely rewrote the Golden Hurricane's all-time top 10 performance lists. His success at ulsa was not, however, limited just to the school record book. nder edwine, ulsa athletes achieved numerous and rankings in many different events, both men and women. he list of events includes the women's 4x400m (3:36.93 outdoor, 3:40.14 indoor), women's 400m (53.12 outdoor, indoor), women's 3000m (9:34.45), women's 5000m (16:42.24), men's mile (3:59.29), men's 1500m (3:42.43), men's 800m (1:47.69), men's DM (9:37.95), women's 4x800m (8:59.16) and men's long jump ( /4). t ulsa, edwine produced 11 qualifiers and the school's first ever ll-merican. In addition, two athletes qualified for the rack and Field ational hampionships, also the school's first ever. During edwine's tenure, ulsa athletes won several conference individual championships and contributed to the top team conference finishes ever for a ulsa team. 2

3 oach edwine/ssistant oach Doug lark Prior to his appointment at ulsa in 1994, edwine spent 11 years as an assistant coach at the niversity of rkansas, one of the premier track and field programs in the nation. During his tenure at, the azorbacks captured nine consecutive hampionships and 22 titles from 1985 through 1994 in both track and field and cross country. He helped produce 14 ll-mericans and two champions in hurdle and sprint events. mong those ll-mericans are two-time indoor and outdoor champion in the 400m, alvin Davis; three-time champion in the 400m and 500m, obbie Haley; and seven-time ll-merican sprinter, Jimmy French. Before becoming a coach at rkansas, edwine placed his name in the azorback history books as a 400m, 600y and 800m runner from edwine was a four-time ll- merican and was named 's utstanding rack thlete all four of his years in Fayetteville. During his freshman season, he captured the outhwest onference hampionships in the indoor 600-yard run (1:10.52) and was a member of the outdoor conference champion 1,600m relay team. he next year, edwine once again became the 600-yard run champion, improving his time to 1: s a senior, he was a three-time conference champion in the 800m run (1:50.15), 880-yard run (1:50.96) and the mile relay (3:14.69). edwine still ranks among the azorbacks' top 10 in six events, which includes anchoring the school's record-setting sprint medley relay team (3:15.10) at the Penn elays in 1983, which now ranks as the second-best time in history. edwine owns the fourth-best time in school history in the 800m at 1: In addition, he also ranks fourth in the outdoor 400m dash and was a participant in several top-10 relay performances for the azorbacks. He still holds the fourth, seventh and eighth-best times in the outdoor 1600m relay record book and the second, sixth and ninth-best times in the outdoor DM. For his achievements, edwine was inducted into the niversity of rkansas Hall of Honor. Professionally, edwine retired from competition in 1996 after he finished fifth in the 800m at the.. lympic rials in tlanta, Ga. He was a.. lympic rial qualifier five consecutive times from 1980 to 1996 and was a two-time silver medalist in the 800m run in the Goodwill Games in 1986 and He also won two bronze medals at the Pan merican Games in 1983 and edwine was also a World hampionship rack eam member in 1985, 1987, 1989, 1991 and 1993 and a two-time 800m champion. His most recent honor was being selected by rack and Field to serve as an assistant coach to eam in the XIIVth Pan merican Games that were held in 2003 in anto tanley Jr., tanley, Jaqueline, rysta and lexa Domingo, Dominican epublic. He coached the men's endurance events under eam men's and women's head coaches Fred Harvey of rizona and Monica Gary of Purdue. edwine was also inducted into the rkansas tate Hall of Fame in edwine earned his bachelor's degree in administrative management from rkansas in He and his wife Jacqueline have three children: rysta (23), tanley Jr. (20), and lexa (15). Doug lark ssistant oach ixth ear t ansas entral Missouri tate, 81 Doug lark begins his sixth year at the niversity of ansas as assistant cross country coach and distance coach for the track team. lark came to after six successful seasons as an assistant coach at the niversity of ulsa. lark has worked closely with head coach tanley edwine throughout his career, coaching alongside him at both rkansas and ulsa. In his five years with the ansas cross country team, lark has helped produce six ll-big 12 athletes, three qualifier's since 2000 (Mark Menefee, harlie Gruber and Benson hesang) and the highest conference team finishes since the introduction of the Big 12. In addition, five of his cross country athletes have gone on to win a total of eight ll-merica honors in track. lark also played an instrumental role in Benson hesang's 2004 ll-merican cross country campaign. During lark's tenure at ulsa, he helped produce the first-ever qualifier and first-ever Western thletic conference champion. In addition, ulsa's men's and women's teams achieved their highest finishes in school history at both the region and conference levels, while several individuals earned all-conference and all-region honors. Prior to coaching at ulsa, lark was an assistant at the niversity of rkansas from During that period, rkansas won four team championships and produced multiple ll-mericans. lark was an qualifier athlete at outhwest Missouri tate in the late 1970's. He also qualified for the lympic rials in the marathon with a time of 2: lark was the top Masters runner in klahoma from 1996 to 2000, posting times of 14:58 (5k), 31:41 (10k) and 25:45 (8k) during that period. In the summer of 2004, lark traveled to thens to coach former Jayhawk harlie Gruber in the 1500m race at the lympics. He still competes and clocked a 15:48 5k time during the summer of lark, 49, is single and resides in Lawrence. 3

4 thletics Director Lew Perkins Lew Perkins thletics Director hird ear t ansas Iowa 67 Lew Perkins has served as director of athletics at the niversity of ansas since June He arrived at after achieving nationally recognized success as athletics director at the niversity of onnecticut. ansas thletics has experienced tremendous growth and success during Perkins short tenure. he football team participated in a bowl game (2003) for the first time since 1995; the men s basketball team reached the Elite Eight of the 2004 hampionships; the women s soccer team has appeared in two consecutive tournaments, reaching the weet 16 in 2003; the women s volleyball team reached the second round of the hampionships in 2003 and 2004, and the softball team reached the tournament in he student-athletes in 's 18-sport program have achieved unprecedented success in the classroom as well, setting records for grade-point averages in each of the last two semesters. ansas thletics fundraising has reached unprecedented levels; under Perkins, s $27-million athletics budget has grown to nearly $40 million. t onnecticut ( ), Perkins was instrumental in guiding athletics to impressive growth - athletically, academically and financially. His leadership influenced six Division I ational hampionships. He was rewarded in 2000 as the inaugural winner of the ational thletic Director of the ear ward as selected by treet & mith s ports Business Journal, in conjunction with the ational ssociation of ollegiate Directors of thletics (D). He was lauded for bringing football to the Division I- level, and for convincing the state of onnecticut Legislature to fund a $90-million, 40,000-seat stadium for, which now competes in the Big East Football onference. He also was responsible for a multi-million dollar contract for the televising of s women s basketball games. Perkins has served on two prestigious committees - the hampionships & ompetition abinet and the Bowl ertification ommittee. In pring 2005 he was named to the Board of Directors of the aismith Basketball Hall of Fame. native of helsea, Mass., Perkins was inducted into his high school Hall of Fame in highly recruited basketball player, he played at the niversity of Iowa ( ) for Hall of Fame coach and graduate alph Miller. Perkins earned his undergraduate degree there in Perkins served as director of athletics ( ) and head basketball coach ( ) at the niversity of outh arolina iken as that institution grew from a junior college to a four-year institution. He received his master's degree in education (1975) from the niversity of outh arolina. Perkins delivered the commencement address and received an honorary Doctor of Education degree at iken in May Perkins has also served as athletics director at the niversity of Maryland and Wichita tate niversity, and associate director of athletics at the niversity of Pennsylvania. Perkins is married to the former Gwen Flaum. Like Lew, Gwen earned an undergraduate degree from Iowa and a master's degree in education from the niversity of outh arolina. hey have two daughters (my, husband Brandon Macneill; Holly, husband om Halligan) and two granddaughters (aroline and lexandra Macneill). 4

In addition to hosting the Big Eight ross ountry hampionships in 1983, 1991 and 1995, im ock Farm was the site of the 1998 Division I and II ross ountry hampionships, which coincided with the 25th anniversary of the course. usan tromblad rainer im ock Farm Johnny ndris rack and ross ountry ID/Media elations ssistant im ock is home to the ansas tate High chool ross ountry meet which will be held this year on ctober 29. will also host the im ock High chool lassic on eptember 17. ny runner or spectator will say that the course is quite unusual and challenging. im ock features specific hills, turns and other landmarks that are named after former Jayhawk runners. unners pass through two covered bridges including a new bridge that was introduced in hose traveling to im ock from the ansas urnpike are advised to take the east Lawrence exit and then travel north on ansas Highway 24/59 (which curves to the west) for approximately two and one-half miles before turning right (north) on the asphalt road at the Midland tore. pproximately two and one-half miles later, watch for an abandoned natural gas pump station on the right and make a left turn (west) at that point onto a gravel road. bout one-quarter of a mile ahead, make a right turn and follow the gravel road approximately one and one-third miles (north) to the course. 6 2005 utlook ross ountry eams Hunting hampionships oach tanley edwine has a lot to look forward to as he begins his sixth year at the helm of the niversity of ansas cross country program. With a senior laden men's team that also includes one of the top runners in the country, the 2005 team will look to improve on its fourth place finish at the Big 12 hampionships a year ago. With seniors ngela Pichardo and hristine Lathrop leading the way, the women's team includes a solid group of sophomores and juniors that is hoping to improve on their 10th and 16th place finishes at last year's Big 12 hampionships and Midwest egional hampionships, respectively. he men's fourth place finish at the Midwest egionals tied their performance from the 2003 season, which marked the highest a cross country squad at ansas had finished since edwine has made it clear what he expects from the men's team in their 2005 campaign: "We're definitely looking forward to our men placing in the hampionships as a team. Last year we had a great year with Benson (hesang). he men were fourth in the Big 12 hampionships and we're looking to do better than that in the Big 12 standings as well as looking to get the entire team to the s." he men's team is coming back loaded after losing five seniors off of last year's Big 12 fourth place squad. he team will be led by one of the strongest runners in the country in junior Benson hesang (Eldama avine, enya). hesang was the top performer for the Jayhawks last year and was also the only runner to reach the hampionships for the second year in a row. In addition to being named a 2004 ll-merican and ll-big 12 runner, hesang won the Big 12 hampionships last year, the first runner to win a conference championship since John Lawson in In all, he finished in the top ten in four of his five races, including an outstanding seventh place finish at the hampionships in erre Haute, Ind. In addition to hesang, the team will also include two talented sophomores in olby Wissel (Elm reek, eb.) and Paul Hefferon (verland Park, an.). Wissel ended last season as the team's number two runner, finishing second on the team at both the Big 12 hampionships and Midwest egionals. Hefferon also came on strong at the end of the season, finishing a solid 34th at Midwest egionals, good enough for fourth on the team. ver the summer, Hefferon won the 5k at the Juniors en route to capturing silver at the Junior Pan m Games in Windsor, ntario. lso on the team will be a talented group of four seniors and two additional juniors who will all by vying for a spot in the top seven. he seniors include Matt French (Howell, Mich.), Joshy Madathil (Liberal, an.), Mike Putzke (ew Buffalo, Mich.), and ameron chwehr (olbert, Wash.). French, chwehr and Madathil all competed in the Big 12 hampionships last season, finishing 27th, 41st, and 43rd, respectively. Putzke will be looking to contribute points for the team in his final year at. Erik loan (Glenview, Ill.) is entering his junior year of eligibility after coming off a redshirt year where he did not compete in any races. Junior yler elly (ulsa, kla.) ran well last year as a sophomore, finishing 34th in the Big 12 hampionships. elly was also named to the cademic ll-big 12 First eam. ophomores ick Brennan (Moraga, alif.) and Patrick McGowan (pringdale, rk.) will try and use the team s early races to earn a spot in the postseason meets. edwine's goals for the women's team are a bit more modest, but just as clear. "We're going to have a young team this year. ur goal is to be in the top half of the conference. We're looking to have a solid placing at the conference meet and hopefully we'll be able to get some of them to the s." he women's side will be a young squad led by seniors ngela Pichardo (Hollywood, Fla.) and hristine Lathrop (verland Park, an.). Pichardo had strong finishes in all of last year's races with her best coming at Midwest egional hampionships where she finished third on the team and 90th overall. Lathrop finished sixth on the team and 83rd overall at last year's Big 12 hampionships. In addition to the seniors, the team brings back two gifted sophomores in onnie bbott (verland Park, an.) and Lisa Morrisey (ttawa, an.), who both placed high in last year's postseason meets. Morrisey finished second on the team and 72nd overall at last season's Midwest egional hampionships, while bbott was fourth on the team and 91st overall. Fellow sophomores Hayley Harbert (hawnee, an.), licia McGregor (Independence, Mo.), and Melissa ourke (ulsa, kla.) will also be competing for a spot in the top seven. Juniors Laura Major (ulsa, kla.), Melissa Moody (mithville, Mo.), and Dena eibel (Emporia, an.) will be asked to take on a greater role for the 2005 season. Major and eibel were both named to the cademic ll- Big 12 First eam last season. eibel came in fifth on the team and 109th overall at the Midwest egional hampionships. Major's best finish was seventh at the Bob immons Invitational. he team's early meets will be a chance for the competitors to prove themselves as they all vie for a position in the postseason races. he 2005 ansas cross country teams will look for their first conference championships since 1969 and oach edwine is optimistic about the upcoming season: "I expect for us to reach our goals. I say that out of all honesty. We're not just trying to aim high and hope to fall wherever we can. We plan on being there. hat's the expectations of the athletes, that's our expectations as coaches, and hopefully we'll get there." 6
