5 QUOTE THE LIONS The following is a quote sheet with excerpts from Lions Head Coach Jim Caldwell and Lions players following the team s win over the Oakland Raiders in Week 11. HEAD COACH JIM CALDWELL On the difference defensively over the past two weeks: Well, I think No.1 we ve been able to stop the run and I think that has to Our front seven does a nice job of that just in terms of the guys up front. I think we ve got some guys in there that are knocking people back all across the front. Haloti s (Ngata) doing a good job, Khyri (Thornton) was playing well for us, C.J. (Wilson) in there nice and tough in the interior and we see what Ziggy (Ansah) does and Jason (Jones) does. But then also our linebackers, running to the ball, making plays. Tahir (Whitehead), (Stephen) Tully, the whole group back there, Josh Bynes. But you can t stop the run without good perimeter play as well. We had guys coming to the perimeter making plays for us, so I think more so than anything else we ve been really solid. We ve been really good run fi ts and our guys have been tackling pretty well. On the confidence in the locker room after back-to-back wins: We ll see, we ll see. It s a positive to build upon, it s something that you try to do. It s hard to win one game in this week, let alone get two back-to-back. So our goal is now to see if we can get three against a really good, tough team with a short week with a very, very complex system they run. On if players and coaches were distracted by the front office changes last week: You know, I think we have a pretty special group. Anytime that you have a number of veterans in each room, they typically can handle changes because they understand this league. This league is always full of changes and things can happen anytime, anywhere and I think they ve been level-headed, so the guys that are young that ordinarily would be subject to mood swings have not been. They ve set a great example, I should say, for those young guys, so the young guys have not been volatile. I think our coaches do a good job of just getting them focused on the things we can control and keep moving forward. QB MATTHEW STAFFORD On being 3-0 when the team rushes at least 20 times: I think it s important, especially for the offensive line. To be able to let those guys lean on them a little bit, especially in the middle of the game and early on, to not always have to drop back and pass protect is big. When you run the ball 20 times it s usually because you re ahead in the fourth quarter, too. You know, you re calling a bunch of runs, so we were able to do that in the last couple games and it s been good. On how the last few weeks have affected the players: Yeah, you know, we just band together. We put our heads down and we go. There s nothing else you can do. Like I ve said for the last however many weeks now, if I start thinking about that stuff, I m doing a disservice to everybody else that s preparing to win. That s my job. My job is to help prepare our offense and our team to win football games and no matter what s going on around me, that s what I m going to do. CALVIN JOHNSON On the importance of winning two in a row: It was huge. Start off the second half of this season right. 2-0 in the third quarter so far and we have a quick turnaround here in the next week or two, but I think we ll be able to handle it. Guys just have to take care of their body so we can stack up another one. On becoming the first Lions player to reach 700 career receptions: I didn t know where I was at with that, didn t really keep up with it, but it s awesome to be able to do that with this cast of guys, with Matt (Stafford) throwing me the ball. Playing with this group of guys, being able to do that in front of these guys Just do it right, I guess I could say. It s an honor, a lot of hard work that went in to it and I m going to keep on getting more. EZEKIEL ANSAH On how much the secondary s play is helping the defensive line: It s great. When you re able to cover the quarterback s fi rst read, it slows him down and the big guys up front are able to eat. So credit to the secondary, they re doing a great job. On the defense wanting to play complementary football: You know, every week we re just trying to make plays. Our main and biggest focus every week is to stop the run and we were able to do that today, make them throw the ball, and that s what we were able to do today. DARIUS SLAY On if he feels that opposing teams are starting to look away from him: I don t know. I really just play ball. If the ball comes over there, I come over there. I just try to compete and play the next play. That s what my job is, just compete and help my team win. On the team moving forward: It s a great turnaround. We start as a team. We told ourselves, We re just going to start over. It was rough in the fi rst eight weeks, now we re just turning the whole thing around. Playing more aggressive defense, just playing and trusting each other and having more fun. I think everybody came here just playing, but now we re just having fun. Everybody is a brotherhood, just having a great time. S GLOVER QUIN On what it means to win two games in a row: It means that we won two games in a row. It means we practiced well, prepared well and went out and executed our game plan well and got a win. We always knew that if we do those things, we could be a good team. On the defense taking it upon themselves to win games: Well, we knew we had to play a lot better than we played in the fi rst half, so we did some different things to make sure that, when we go out to practice and we go out to play, that everybody s keyed in, everybody s locked in and ready to go. The team s last road win occurred December 15, With a sack against the Raiders in Week 11 (11/22) Ezekiel Ansah now has 23.5 career sacks in 40 career games. He holds the franchise record for most sacks in a player s fi rst three NFL seasons ( Ndamukong Suh; 22.0 sacks, ). His 8.0 sacks so far in 2015 also tie a single-season career high. 50 The Lions run defense has helped lead the team to wins over the past two weeks. In the win against Oakland (11/22), the Lions held the Raiders to 50 yards rushing, and held the Packers to 47 yards on the ground in Week 10. The Lions have now held opponents to 50 yards or less in three games this year, including a season-low 41 yards vs. Denver (9/27). LIONS BY THE NUMBERS 76 Thursday s game marks the 76th Annual Thanksgiving Day Classic for Detroit. The Lions are all-time on Thanksgiving Day, and Detroit has claimed wins on Thanksgiving in each of the past two seasons. Detroit defeated Chicago last season at Ford Field K Matt Prater has connected on all 13 of his fi eld goal attempts in 2015, including three in Week 11 vs. Oakland (29, 41, 51 yards). His 51-yarder against the Raiders was his 27th career 50-yard fi eld goal as he tied K David Akers for eighth on the NFL s all-time career 50-yard fi eld goals list. 445 By recording 72 receiving yards in Week 11 vs. Oakland (11/22), RB Theo Riddick (445) surpassed RB Billy Sims (412 in 1980) for the most receiving yards by a Lions running back through 10 games since Only Riddick and Sims have ever recorded more than 400+ receiving yards in the fi rst 10 games in the past 45 seasons. 702 Calvin Johnson, who earlier this season set the franchise record for career receptions, caught 5 passes in the Lions win over Oakland and became the fi rst player in franchise history to record 700 career receptions. 22 LIONS THANKSGIVING DAY TRADITION It was, legend says, a typically colorful, probably chilly, November day in 1622 that Pilgrims and Native Americans celebrated the new world s bounty with a sumptuous feast. They sat together at Plymouth Plantation (they spelled it Plimouth) in Massachusetts, gave thanks for the goodness set before them, then dined on pumpkin pie, sweet potatoes, maize, cranberry sauce, turkey and who knows what else. Actually, fish was just as predominant a staple. And history books say pumpkin pie really debuted a year later. But regardless of the accuracy of the details, that s how Thanksgiving Day is seen by Americans -- except Detroiters. They may have most of the same images as everyone else, but with a new twist that began in That s when Detroiters and their outstate Michigan compatriots found themselves at the dawn of an unplanned behavior modification, courtesy of George A. Dick Richards, owner of the city s new entry in the National Football League: The Detroit Lions. Larry Paladino, Lions Pride, 1993 Four generations of Detroiters have been a proud part of the American celebration of Thanksgiving. The relationship between Detroit and Thanksgiving dates back to 1934 when owner G.A. Richards scheduled a holiday contest between his fi rst-year Lions and the Chicago Bears. Some 80 years later, fans throughout the State of Michigan have transformed an annual holiday event into the single greatest tradition in the history of American professional team sports. Indeed, if football is America s passion, Thanksgiving football is Detroit s passion. The game was the brainchild of Richards, the first owner of the Detroit Lions. Richards had purchased the team in 1934 and moved the club from Portsmouth, Ohio to the Motor City. The Lions were the new kids in town and had taken a backseat to the baseball Tigers. Despite the fact the Lions had lost only one game prior to Thanksgiving in 1934, the season s largest crowd had been just 15,000. The opponent in 1934 was the undefeated, defending World Champion Chicago Bears. The game would determine the champion of the Western Division. Richards had convinced the NBC Radio Network to carry the game coast-to-coast (94 stations) and additionally, an estimated 26,000 fans jammed into the University of Detroit Stadium while thousands more disappointed fans were turned away. The game was the NFL's first on a national broadcast. In 2009, the Lions Thanksgiving Day game against Green Bay marked the NFL s 75th anniversary of the fi rst NFL national game broadcast. Graham McNamee was the announcer for NBC Radio for that historic game in Despite two Ace Gutowsky touchdowns, the Bears won the inaugural game 19-16, but a classic was born. Since 1934, 74 games have been played with the Lions holding a (.480) record in the series. And each game, in its own way, continues to bring back memories of Thanksgiving, not only to Lions fans, but to football fans across the nation. The 2015 schedule features the Lions 76th Thanksgiving Day Classic Thursday, November 26 at 12:30 p.m. ET vs. the Philadelphia Eagles. This year s game marks only the second alltime meeting between the Lions and Eagles on Thanksgiving since they fi rst met in Detroit is all-time on Thanksgiving Day, and Detroit has claimed wins on Thanksgiving in each of the past two seasons. THANKSGIVING DAY FACTS The series began November 29, 1934 when Detroit played host to the Chicago Bears. In the fi rst Thanksgiving Day game, the Lions were defeated by the Bears A total of 75 games have been played with the Lions owning a record in the annual holiday classic. More than 4 million fans have witnessed the Lions 75 Thanksgiving Day games. The total attendance for the first 75 games is 4,243,190, an average of 56,575 fans per game. The Lions have played 24 different teams since the fi rst Thanksgiving Day game. The most common opponent has been the Green Bay Packers, who the Lions played in 2013 for the 21st time in the Thanksgiving series. Their second most common opponent is the Chicago Bears (15 times). The two highest scoring games were a Packers win in 1986 and a Detroit romp over Green Bay in The lowest scoring game was a 12-0 Philadelphia win in the 1968 Mud Bowl. Eleven times in the series has a game been decided by three points or less, with the Lions record standing at in those meetings. The most lopsided game was a 45-3 Lions win over Pittsburgh in Seven shutouts have been recorded, but only one by the Lions (20-0 over the Bears in 1979). Three Thanksgiving Day games have gone into overtime. The fi rst came in 1980 when the Bears David Williams returned the opening kickoff of OT for a 95-yard touchdown. At the time, the game marked the shortest overtime game in NFL history (21 seconds). The second overtime game occurred in 1998 when the Lions defeated the Steelers on a 42- yard Jason Hanson fi eld goal in a game that will be remembered for the controversial coin toss before overtime began. The third occurred against the Houston Texans in 2012 in a game categorized by back-and-forth possessions and two missed fi eld goals from each side, with Houston K Shayne Graham pulling out a 32-yarder for the win.
