2 HEAD COACH CHRIS GOBRECHT USC 77 6TH SEASON AT USC 24TH SEASON OVERALL Chris Gobrecht was one of the youngest coaches to ever reach the 300- victory plateau. T wenty years after graduating from USC in 1977 to embark on a coaching career, Chris Gobrecht returned to campus to take the helm of the Women of Troy basketball program. On May 8, 1997, she replaced Fred Williams, who left after two years as USC s coach. Gobrecht, 46, now prepares to enter her sixth season as head coach of the Women of Troy, and currently owns a overall record at Troy. Gobrecht has been a head coach at the Division I level for 23 years, having guided programs at Cal State Fullerton (six years), Washington (11) and Florida State (one). She was a two-time Pacific-10 Coach of the Year ( ) with the Huskies and has amassed a career mark. She reached the 300-victory plateau on Jan. 19, 1995, at the age of 39, making her one of the youngest coaches to do so in America. Gobrecht is the second-winningest coach in the Pac-10 after 16 years in the conference with a record of (.633). During her 11 years ( ) at Washington, she compiled a (.732) record. Gobrecht, the winningest coach in Washington history, led the Huskies to nine NCAA Tournament berths (including advancing to the regionals four times), three conference championships ( ) and four second-place league finishes. Her teams won at least 16 games each season (including getting 20 wins eight times). Her 1990 team, which pinned the only loss on national champion Stanford, set a school record for victories (28) and finished No. 3 in the AP poll (the highest ranking ever in the program s history). Coach Gobrecht drastically improved a struggling Cal State Fullerton Women's Basketball program, and led the Titans to their first WNIT* appearance * Coach Gobrecht left Washington as the Huskies' all-time winningest coach after leading them to nine NCAA Tournament berths and three conference titles. In 2000, USC recorded its first winning record (16-14) and received its first postseason invitation (WNIT) since Gobrecht s arrival in Entering the 2001 season, Gobrecht and her coaching staff welcomed one of the nation s top recruiting classes, including the No. 1 post player in the country. But with its youth and inexperience, the 2001 squad struggled to find success until capping off the regular season with four straight wins and a glimpse of what is yet to come. The 2002 squad found its way back into the postseason, advancing to the second round of the Women s Postseason NIT with a dominating victory over San Francisco before falling to Washington. The Women of Troy finished overall and 11-7 in a tight Pac-10 race for its best conference finish (tied for fourth) since Gobrecht took the helm. Aside from her collegiate coaching experience, Gobrecht has also had success sending her players to the next level. Five of her former players at Washington have competed professionally in the United States in the WNBA and the former ABL. With her success over the past 23 years, she has turned into somewhat of a spokeswoman for the sport. In the fall of 1991, Gobrecht was a featured speaker at the NCAA-sponsored Spotlight on Women s Basketball media gathering in New York City. In May of 1990, she was honored by the Seattle chapter of Women in Communication at its annual Matrix Table awards presentation as a 1990 Woman of Achievement. 32

3 Gobrecht won the Seattle Post-Intelligencer Sports Star of the Year Award in 1996, was a nominee for the award during the 1988 season. Gobrecht came to USC after spending the 1997 season at Florida State. She began the process of reconstructing a downtrodden Seminole program and finished with a 5-22 record. Prior to her stint at Washington, Gobrecht spent six seasons ( ) as the head coach at Cal State Fullerton, where she began a rebuilding process and ended with an record. The 1985 Titans earned a berth in the Women s NIT and Gobrecht was a national Coach of the Year finalist. Gobrecht began her coaching career in 1978 as the head coach at Santa Fe Springs (Calif.) High near Los Angeles. Her team went 20-4 and advanced into the CIF AAA playoffs. In 1979, she became the head coach at Pasadena (Calif.) City College, guiding her Metropolitan Conference titlist squad to a 25-5 record and a runner-up finish in the state junior college tournament. She has also coached at the national and international levels. She was an assistant for a 1990 USA Basketball select team which traveled to Czechoslovakia and Italy. In 1989, she led the East Team to a silver medal in the U.S. Olympic Festival. Under her maiden name of Chris Geiger, she was a three-year ( ) starter on USC s basketball team. She also played volleyball for the Women of Troy for two years ( ). She received her bachelor s degree in public affairs from USC in Following graduation, she worked as a Peace Corps volunteer, spending a year teaching English at St. Mary s College in Apia, Western Samoa. Born in Toledo, Ohio, on Feb. 9, 1955, she prepped at Huntington Beach (Calif.) High. She and her husband, Bob (who earned his bachelor s and master s degrees at USC), have two children: a son, Eric, 15, and a daughter, Madeline, 12. Gobrecht also has numerous family ties to USC: her father, William, was a professor at USC; her mother, Adrianne, earned a doctorate degree from USC; her sister, Gwynn, is a USC graduate; her father-in-law, Bob Sr., and sister-in-law, Carol, both earned undergraduate degrees at USC; and her nephew, Jeff Orswell, is a USC graduate who was a member of the Trojan Marching Band. I have a great deal of respect for the history of the USC women's basketball team and I feel honored to have been given the opportunity to take the program back to the highest level. When you consider the history and legacy of this USC program, and the role it has played in the development of women's basketball - I don't think it takes a back seat to any other program in the country." -- Chris Gobrecht CHRIS GOBRECHT WITH HUSBAND, BOB, DAUGHTER, MADELINE, AND SON, ERIC, PICTURED WITH TRAVELER AT THE 2002 SALUTE TO TROY. 4 ASSISTANT COACH STACY MCINTYRE KENTUCKY 94 6TH SEASON AT USC S tacy McIntyre, a former All-SEC performer at Kentucky, enters her sixth year as an assistant coach at USC. She joined the Women of Troy staff in 1997 after a successful stint at Nevada. McIntyre, 32, handles the main scouting and player development responsibilities for the Women of Troy. She also heads up Southern California recruiting, compliance and coordinates summer employment. Coach McIntyre communicates very well with the players and is very much respected for her honest, straightforward approach to things, said head coach Chris Gobrecht. She really understands basketball and it is easy to see why she was such a great player. Much to her credit, McIntyre helped the USC women s basketball program recruit one of the nation s top incoming freshmen classes of 2000 and two top-25 recruits in She also helped lead the 2000 and 2002 Women of Troy to postseason appearances and the most successful seasons since McIntyre spent three seasons prior to joining USC as an assistant coach with the Wolfpack, helping rebuild the Nevada program. While at Nevada, McIntyre was the recruiting coordinator and was also in charge of the team s scouting responsibilities. She played at Kentucky from , finishing her career as the Wildcats ninth all-time scorer (1,215) and was sixth in career steals (189). A co-captain in 1991 and 1992, McIntyre was the Wildcats leading scorer those same years, averaging 15.0 points and 16.1 points, respectively. She was an All-SEC second-team and All-Academic SEC selection in McIntyre helped lead the 1991 Kentucky team to the NCAA Tournament. McIntyre, who has a teacher s certification, graduated from Kentucky in 1994 with a bachelor s degree in physical education and a minor in health. A graduate of Scott County High in Georgetown, Ken., McIntyre played both basketball and softball as a prep. She was born in Georgetown and currently resides in Los Angeles, Calif. 34

5 ASSISTANT COACH SHANNON PERRY IOWA 98 3RD SEASON AT USC E ntering her third season with the USC women s basketball coaching staff, Shannon Perry was named an assistant coach by head coach Chris Gobrecht in July of Perry previously served as an assistant coach at her alma mater, Iowa. With the Women of Troy, her responsibilities include national recruiting and serving as the academic liaison for the team. I think (Shannon) is one of the truly bright and up-and-coming coaches in America, said Gobrecht. The combination of her Los Angeles roots, and the experiences she gained from coaching and playing outside of California, has been a great asset to this position. Everyone who has ever worked with Shannon has had nothing but glowing things to say about her. She is very talented and very well thought of in this industry. She helped recruit two top-25 players for the 2001 season in just her first year at USC. Last season she helped lead the Women of Troy to a postseason appearances and one of the most successful seasons since A native of Carson, Calif., Perry spent the season as an assistant with the Hawkeyes, in charge of the post player development. A 1998 graduate from Iowa, she played four seasons of collegiate basketball and was regarded as the team s leading defensive player throughout that time. During her playing career, the Hawkeyes won the Big Ten title twice (1996 and 1998) and captured the tournament championship in Perry, 26, also has ties with USC. After receiving her bachelor of arts degree in both communications studies and journalism and mass communications from Iowa, she has been working towards her master s degree in broadcast journalism from USC. A 1994 graduate of Cerritos (Calif.) High, Perry played basketball and volleyball as a prep. Born on April 3, 1976 in Inglewood, Calif., Perry currently resides in Norwalk, Calif. 35

6 ASSISTANT COACH STEVE BROOKS LONG BEACH STATE 77 1ST SEASON AT USC S teve Brooks, a former prep basketball coach with more than 20 years of coaching experience, enters his first season in the collegiate ranks as a member of the USC women s basketball coaching staff. Brooks was named assistant coach by head coach Chris Gobrecht in July of His responsibilities will include overseeing individual development of the players, as well as on-campus recruiting, conditioning and scouting. We wanted someone who would be dedicated to the improvement of our players the way our coaches have always been and Steve fits that description perfectly, said Gobrecht. Our players will benefit from his experience in the game. I am very excited that he has joined the staff. Brooks took his first coaching position as assistant boys' varsity basketball coach and head junior varsity coach at Huntington Beach (Calif.) High for three years ( ). The varsity team advanced to the Sunset League playoffs each season and the 1978 squad finished the year as league co-champions. In 1980, Brooks was the head boys' and girls' basketball coach and athletic director at Leggett Valley (Calif.) High. He led the boys' team to a 22-6 record, the Northwest (West) Conference championship and the CIF Northcoast Section Final Four that season and was honored as league coach of the year. 8 Supporting Women of Troy Basketball The support of loyal Trojans helps maintain the level of excellence that is the hallmark of Trojan Basketball. Here are some ways you can show your support. Tip-Off Club The Tip-Off Club, with three membership levels, is the official support group for USC Women s Basketball. The Tip-Off Club Provides its members with an opportunity to become an integral force in the resurgence of the storied Women of Troy Basketball program. Funds raised through Tip-Off Club Memberships help to offset annual team operating expenses, such as team travel and recruiting. In appreciation of the continuing support by USC Women s Basketball Season Ticket Holders, USC Athletics automatically grants Starter level Tip-Off Club membership to each Season Ticket Holder, and provides them and other supporters of the program with the option of upgrading to Captain level for $50 per year, and MVP level for $150 per year. For further information on the Tip-Off Club, please call (213) Annual Membership levels include: Starter - All Season Ticket Holders Captain - $50 MVP - $150 Scholarship Funding USC s Athletics Department is responsible for providing the University the funds necessary to cover the costs of tuition, room and board for each of the scholarships it grants to our student-athletes. Two sources provide scholarship funds for USC s student-athletes: scholarship endowment and athletic support groups. Endowed Scholarships Endowed scholarships are large sums of money that have been invested in the University s endowment and generate significant interest income each year. A portion of the interest is used to pay a current student-athlete s tuition/expenses. The remainder of the interest earned is reinvested in the principal, thereby allowing the endowment to grow annually. Currently there are two endowed scholarship positions on the Women of Troy. Thanks to the generosity of Jerry and Jackie Kehle, the Mr. and Mrs. Gerald W. Kehle Endowed Scholarship provides for the tuition, room and board of the starting center on the team. Judith W. Hunter another great Trojan - recently provided a scholarship to establish the second endowed position on the team. This leaves thirteen additional scholarships in need of endowment for the Women of Troy. Athletic Support Group Membership Annual memberships in Women of Troy, Committee or the Scholarship Club support athletic scholarships on a yearly basis. These gifts of varying values contribute to the education costs of a student-athlete for the current academic year. Women of Troy Basketball Endowment Program FORWARD GUARD GUARD Judith W.
